Hello there, welcome to the whole month of September and we're going to discuss
00:05
the whole thing about male sterilization
00:14
Many people worry about sterilization because they have
00:17
misconception about sterilization. Sterilization is not castration
00:22
therefore do not worry about the testicle being removed. First of all the
00:28
differences between male and female sterilization is quite vast. For example
00:33
men actually can undergo such procedure under local anesthesia and women have to
00:40
undergo it under general anesthesia. For men it actually is a small incision
00:46
around the actual scotum itself, for women is actually multiple incision in
00:52
order to get hold of the fallopian tube and more importantly for men it is not
00:57
it is reversible but for women it is not reversible. So the first week we're
01:03
going to deal with exactly what anesthesia do we use. So first of all
01:09
when somebody undergo vasectomy 99% of the time we do it under local
01:17
anesthesia. Under this circumstance the person is completely awake and the
01:22
surgeon will actually identify the vas and inject local anesthesia so that
01:27
there is no sensation felt at all. Under such circumstance there will be a small
01:33
six millimeter incision made and also the vas will be externalized and
01:39
segmentally excised and both sides of the vas will be cut and subsequently the
01:45
stitches will be applied on the scotum itself. Obviously there are two scotum
01:51
two testicle so therefore on the right hand side there will be small wound and
01:55
the left hand side will be small wound. Some people worry about the local
02:00
anesthesia might actually wear off quite quickly, don't worry the vast majority of
02:06
people this will take between six to eight hours therefore individuals who
02:11
undergo vasectomy are always advised to take some painkillers such as
02:15
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory way before the actual local anesthetics
02:20
wears off and for the first day the vast majority people feels nothing at
02:25
all. For the second day the actual antibiotics is probably required but the
02:30
painkillers is only necessary in less than 10% of men who undergo vasectomy.
02:35
So for men who truly truly are quite scared of pain there's other options of
02:42
general anesthesia however if you consider that your wife undergo the
02:47
whole childbirth for you a small cut for the local anesthesia induced
02:53
vasectomy probably is quite worthwhile and probably you need to do it without
02:58
the whole problems of general anesthesia. For the following week we're going to
03:03
discuss exactly what will happen to your semen after the vasectomy. If you are
03:09
interested stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
