00:00An expert from a United Nations affiliate has commended Malaysia for ensuring educational

00:06accessibility nationwide, even in remote areas.

00:10However, Karen Chan from the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network Asia headquarters

00:16expressed concerns about the quality of education, citing World Bank data which shows that 42%

00:22of Malaysian students struggle with basic reading comprehension.

00:27Chan noted the 2023 SPM results, revealing that 24% of students failed in mathematics

00:33and 50% scored grades D and E, while 52% received grades D, E and F in English.

00:40Chan said that Chinese schools were attracting a more diverse group of students as they are

00:45perceived as providing superior education.

00:49She said the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network conducted a study, revealing that

00:53many public school educators lack an understanding of sustainable development, making it difficult

00:58for them to design real-world learning experiences that foster critical thinking and problem-solving

01:03skills in students.

01:06She said Malaysia is not unique in facing this problem, as it exists in other countries

01:10too.

01:11However, she added that other countries have taken radical steps to address it.
