Discount of up to £3,750 on electric cars to slash costs

Drivers across the UK will soon enjoy discounts on dozens of new electric car models after the government announced a £650 million grant scheme worth up to £3,750 per car, as part of the Plan for Change and making owning an electric car a reality for thousands. Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood said: "You can save up to £1500 a year if you switch to electric. If you can charge at home overnight, you can be paying as little as 2p per mile to drive an electric car." Report by Gluszczykm. 00:06vehicle. We know when people really want to make that switch they want to be driving a greener car

00:13but they say they're worried about the upfront cost and they're worried about having the charging

00:18infrastructure that means that they can do the journeys they want to do and still be able to

00:22charge conveniently and easily. So we're offering this discount of up to £3,750 off the price

00:32of a new electric vehicle. It's targeted at the lower end of the market those that

00:37have a retail price of £37,000 or less helping to close that gap between the cost of a new electric

00:44vehicle and the cost of a new petrol or diesel car. Driving an electric vehicle can be really

00:51economical once you've got it you can save up to £1,500 a year if you switch to electric. If you

00:58can charge at home overnight you can be paying as little as 2p a mile to drive an electric car. That

01:04means you could go all the way from London to Birmingham for £2.50. We're not allowing these

01:09discounts to be used for luxury cars for people who can clearly afford them. We're targeting this

01:15at the lower end of the market. We know lots of people don't buy a car by paying for it outright.

01:21They buy it through finance deals or by leasing it and this will be available to those people.
