00:00It's been quite the week of Champions League football so far. High drama, late goals, controversy, epic comebacks and a managerial sacking with a new campaign only two days old. Six more games to show you on day three and some mouthwatering matchups to look forward to.
00:18With us this evening, former Manchester United and Newcastle midfielder Nicky Butt, a Champions League winner in 1999, of course, our Champions League analyst Neda Manua and European football expert Nicky Bandini.
00:30We begin at St. James' Park, Newcastle against Barcelona, a clash to evoke memories of Newcastle's first ever Champions League game, a 90s classic.
00:40United have waited a long time for nights like this as presented by.
00:50Now, Thomason for Newcastle. Aspria goes into the area and the penalty's given.
00:55Aspria just touched it into the corner.
00:59Picked up by Gillespie, right side, beats Sergis, gets a grunt in, it's 2-0.
01:03All the way from Sergis, down the right-hand side, it comes from Gillespie, Aspria is there!
01:13And it's a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, Aspria.
01:17Chance here, jumping across the beta goal and it's into the net.
01:20Barcelona have full the second goal back.
01:23Newcastle 3, Barcelona 2.
01:26And I swear they cannot believe it.
01:28With the atmosphere at fever pitch on Tyneside, your commentator for this one is Guy Mobley.
01:3828 years and one day later.
01:42Those here that first time will never forget it.
01:45And whilst the feeling of that 1997 can never be replicated, the noise will be.
01:51St. James' Park today holds 16,000 more fans.
01:55The Newcastle team shows two changes from Saturday's 1-0 win against Wolves here.
02:00With goalscorer Nick Voltemada and goalmaker Jacob Murphy making way for two Anthony's.
02:06Gordon and Ilanga come in.
02:08Barcelona are without Laminha, mild due to a pelvic problem.
02:11But it's not as though they're star deficient.
02:13Frenkie de Jong returns from injury.
02:15Rafinha and Robert Lewandowski are back in to start.
02:18And there's a swift return to home shores for Marcus Rashford.
02:22His fifth Barcelona game awaiting his first Barcelona goal.
02:28Newcastle United back in the Champions League.
02:32And pitch straight in against one of its Eternals.
02:36Barcelona's 30th season in the competition.
02:38A joint record with Real Madrid.
02:41Five times they've been champions of Europe.
02:43Bruno Gemaraes tripping us on the move.
02:49So is Ilanga.
02:50And it's Gordon in the middle.
02:53Ilanga, great work.
02:54Gordon missed it.
02:58Ilanga couldn't have done any more.
03:00Gordon perhaps should have done.
03:04By the noises coming out of the Catalans' camp,
03:07Barcelona knew what they'd be up against here tonight.
03:10And they're getting it.
03:13It will calm down.
03:16It might calm down.
03:18It probably won't calm down.
03:22Rashford.
03:25Stopped by Trippier.
03:29Bruno Gemaraes now.
03:30Only Gordon ahead of him.
03:33Gordon was staying onside.
03:35Ilanga was steaming past on the outside.
03:37He's looking for Burns.
03:39Brilliant stop from Juan Garcia.
03:45Top keeping.
03:46After some excellent Newcastle sweeping.
03:49Big, big moment.
03:51Clever Anthony Gordon.
03:53He knew he would be off.
03:54So stayed put more or less.
03:56Waiting for Ilanga to make up the ground.
03:58And he can certainly do that.
04:02Eddie Howe knows.
04:04They all know.
04:05That in games of this magnitude,
04:07they really have to be taken.
04:09Direct from Colombia.
04:12The hat-trick hero of 97, Tino Esprija is here.
04:16As passionate and behind the team in black and white as any other supporter in the stands.
04:21Strong Barcelona pressure.
04:25Rashford.
04:27Cher's got his head to it.
04:28Gives it to Lewandowski, who's hooked it away from goal.
04:31Have it back, Marcus Rashford.
04:36De Jong.
04:37Crossed towards Rafinha.
04:41Struggling a bit here in Newcastle.
04:43Here's Lewandowski.
04:45Lewandowski's effort smothered by Byrne.
04:47And then Rafinha's miss, is it?
04:51He feared the worst at times here for Newcastle.
04:53Especially there when Lewandowski took possession.
04:57Byrne got in the way.
04:58And then Trippier's presence was enough to put off Rafinha.
05:03I think actually the ball seemed to just move away from him.
05:06Just as he was about to connect.
05:08Liveramento.
05:18Barnes.
05:19He'll have to go some.
05:21Araujo went with him.
05:22And Newcastle have a corner in front of the Gallagher.
05:28Mr Byrne and Signor Araujo are going to lock horns again.
05:35Elanga to take.
05:36Elanga in.
05:39And it's just wide from Joe Linton.
05:41It was too high for Byrne.
05:43And Joe Linton as a result will have had his view obscured.
05:47And I think he was on his way back down to earth by the time he met it.
05:50Just about.
05:52And he never really met it.
06:02Lewandowski.
06:03Found by Fermin.
06:04Liveramento across now.
06:06It's Rashford.
06:08Well, he got all of that.
06:09And he's taken two Newcastle players out with it.
06:13Fabian Scherr bore the brunt.
06:15Good tackle that from Liveramento.
06:19Rashford then.
06:20Focused on the ball and hitting it hard.
06:23Straight against Fabian Scherr.
06:24Benitez enjoying himself.
06:28Former Newcastle United boss.
06:30Former many times adversary of Barcelona.
06:35There's Trippier.
06:36Back to Joe Linton.
06:38Elanga.
06:38Stood up nicely.
06:41And Koundé comes to get in front of Barnes and clear.
06:46Trippier.
06:48Bruno Kimmerich.
06:51Nice little sidestep.
06:52Now it's Tonali.
06:56Straight down the middle.
06:58Straight at Garcia.
07:00Newcastle have now managed two shots at him.
07:03Martín.
07:13He's lost it to Elanga.
07:15Gordon to Tonali.
07:17Bruno Kimmerich tries to sort his feet out.
07:19That allows Fermin the time he needed to come and win it.
07:22Koundé to Rafinha.
07:26Dangerous Barcelona break here.
07:28Always dangerous with Rafinha on the ball.
07:30And he's still on the ball.
07:39De Jong.
07:42Koundé's cross.
07:44Rashford!
07:46There is his first goal for Barcelona.
07:52Massive moment for him.
07:58Huge for Hansi Flick.
08:01Barcelona have scored with their first effort on target all game long.
08:07That will feel tremendous to Marcus Rashford.
08:13Just got himself the room that he needed away from Febby and Scher.
08:19It's a brilliant header.
08:20It really is.
08:22No chance, Nick Pope.
08:24It's Newcastle United 0-0.
08:26Barcelona 1-0.
08:30He's bringing the game to a halt because Fabian Scher is still feeling the effects of that Rashford shot that hit him hard in the head not so long ago.
08:40And now there will be no chances taken.
08:43And now there will be no chances taken.
08:43And Febby and Scher will have to go off.
08:53Kvassi.
08:54Kvassi.
08:54Kvassi.
08:55Kvassi.
08:58Lewandowski.
08:58Manechel gets it away
09:01Rashford
09:05giving it back by Byrne
09:08Rashford's going to take on another shot
09:11oh that is wonderful
09:13absolutely fantastic
09:17from Marcus Rashford
09:18no goal in his first four Barcelona games
09:25he's got two in less than nine minutes tonight
09:29first one was an excellent header
09:33the second one's a banger
09:36doesn't even bring a flicker from Thomas Tuchel
09:39he should be beaming from ear to ear
09:41what a shot that is
09:46the Newcastle defence will have fought at one point here
09:52they've done their job
09:53they've kept him away
09:53they've forced him wider than he wanted to be
09:56oh no
09:57he was just where he wanted to be
09:59Newcastle United 0
10:01Barcelona
10:03Marcus Rashford 2
10:05easily stopped by Martin
10:13now here's Rafinha
10:15Torres on the move in the middle
10:19Rafinha going to the middle and looking for the corner
10:22this could get worse for Newcastle
10:27unless they can turn the tide around somehow
10:30Rashford scored two
10:33and then what about that for a pass out to Rafinha
10:36to nearly make goal number three
10:38Gordon
10:49Volta Marder lovely touch
10:52Bruno Guimaraes
10:53not quite far enough away from Joan Garcia
11:01here lovely Newcastle build-up though
11:04Murphy
11:07Bontman
11:12Bruno Guimaraes to Ali to Volta Marder
11:19after Jacob Murphy
11:21Murphy's ball is a beauty
11:23and Gordon has scored
11:25and there's still life left in Newcastle United
11:29it'll be all eyes on the board now
11:32you never know
11:34what a wonderful move this was
11:37the football was flowing
11:39the cross from Jacob Murphy was
11:42every bit as the one that he put onto
11:44Nick Volta Marder's head at the weekend
11:46this time he fed Gordon
11:50and Anthony Gordon has prevented
11:54quite a few people from heading for the exit
11:57because there are seven minutes to go
12:00Barcelona have it
12:11Rafinha has been found
12:13Rafinha in towards Danny
12:17although
12:18brilliant save by Pote
12:20it keeps the game going for another couple of minutes
12:22how sharp is that from Nick Pote
12:30throw in
12:33launch time
12:35looking for Byrne
12:40nearly came to Portman
12:43that's Tonali
12:47well you knew there'd be one more chance
12:50Tonali's shot was in
12:52too close to Joan Garcia
12:54who's been sure-handed all night long
13:01Marcus Rashford
13:03is Barcelona's match winner in Newcastle
13:07two goals from him
13:09Newcastle United one
13:10Barcelona two
13:12when the dust settles I think we'll look back
13:16probably differently with the performance
13:18I think it was a good performance
13:19it was a strong effort
13:20but of course these nights are only magical for us
13:23if you win and we haven't
13:25so we failed in that objective
13:26but I think we will learn and grow our game
13:29from nights like this
13:30when you start in this Champions League season
13:32it's very important to get three points from beginning
13:35last season we played in Monaco
13:37we lost
13:37and so far for today
13:39it's a really good feeling for us
13:41and helps us also to get better and better
13:45it's a top top level
13:46and you see Rashford ladies scored
13:48two goals sort of out of nowhere
13:49the header
13:50the great header
13:50they should never score
13:51and then the second goal
13:52it's an unbelievable bit of play
13:54so it's got to be that for us
13:56it's got to be the same
13:56we've got to create some magic
13:58or take the opportunity
13:59to represent it to us
14:00you know it's my first goal for the club
14:03so yeah both really really positive
14:05but for me it's being in the areas
14:07and just being confident to take on the shots
14:09and yeah just keep going
14:10regardless if it goes in or not
14:12the next one is the most important one
14:14so yeah just have to keep going
14:16with this mentality that I have
14:17well it wasn't quite the romance of 97
14:21or the grandstand finish
14:22that St James' Park would like
14:23but you know it was a great game to watch
14:26and as Anthony Gordon was talking about Rashford
14:28I think we should continue
14:28because he's the story of the night really
14:30yeah he is
14:31I think he's shown tonight
14:33what a top top player he is
14:34because we've obviously forgot about his talent
14:36in England with the last couple of years
14:38he's had at Man United
14:38but he's shown tonight
14:40that he's a real real top talent
14:41and he's back to the old Marcus really
14:43yeah and it wasn't just his goals was it
14:45no his work ethic as well
14:47I mean here he knows Trippier well
14:49obviously played against him
14:50and played with England
14:51but he's turning there
14:52knowing he's lying on his speed
14:53and knowing he's going to catch him
14:55when he's going like that
14:56but he's just scuffed the last little bit
14:58but he's very positive in what he's doing
14:59and here he's working back
15:00helping the team out
15:01but what I like about this bit here
15:03now he doesn't try and make a silly run
15:05where he's not going to get the ball
15:05he waits and waits and waits
15:07and gets the ball back in the air
15:08he's either going to run it at him
15:09take him down the line
15:10or check back
15:11and he's put a lovely little cross in there
15:12just a little couple of inches too high
15:14again here
15:16you know one thing about Marcus
15:17from a young boy
15:18he's always threatened a goal
15:19and he didn't get the ball here
15:20but he's threatened
15:21it comes back out
15:22in the right areas
15:23and he's really unlucky
15:24with just not scoring a goal there
15:25and this for me
15:27I mean it's what
15:28his flaw was a younger player
15:30but he's got a really good area
15:31to try and get an unbelievable header
15:33and
15:33yeah I mean
15:35this space here
15:36should not be a getting here
15:37but the goals are an amazing header
15:39yeah absolutely
15:40it's strange that Sherr
15:41decides to drop off in that instance
15:42maybe he doesn't think
15:43that Rashford's going to be
15:44getting his head into it
15:45but
15:45it's a great bit of position
15:46from Rashford
15:47and I think what was key in this game
15:48and in fairness
15:49what he said in the interview as well
15:50he said it's the next one
15:51it's the next one
15:52what a strike that is
15:53yeah that's
15:54that's an unbelievable strike
15:55and he's got that in his locker
15:56everyone knows
15:57you can see him score goals
15:58the way he strikes
15:58he was a great striker
15:59at the ball
16:00but the goal for me there
16:02when it's going away from goal
16:03to be able to keep the ball straight
16:04and not move off an angle
16:05it's a phenomenal goal
16:06and well deserved
16:07he was the best player of the night
16:09yeah well it clearly was
16:10if you look at the stats
16:12of the night as well
16:12he was kind of top
16:13in almost every area
16:14and his work rate
16:16as you pointed out
16:17as well tonight
16:17it's amazing isn't it Nicky
16:19when you're loved
16:20and you feel wanted
16:21and appreciated
16:22that a performance like that
16:23will come
16:24and he clearly is
16:24his manager pre-match
16:25even Hansi Flix
16:26said he'd watched him
16:27for a long time
16:28at Manchester United
16:29admired him
16:30and loves everything
16:30about his game
16:31yeah it's interesting
16:32Nicky was saying about
16:33we've forgotten him over here
16:34but very clearly
16:35Hansi Flix hadn't forgotten him
16:37talked about him
16:37being unbelievable
16:38talked about
16:39how he likes him
16:40in the one-on-ones
16:40how he likes his dribbling
16:41but also specifically said
16:42and he's a great finisher as well
16:44which of course
16:45he showed tonight
16:46and I think it's
16:47to a certain extent
16:48with Hansi Flix
16:49you know this is his shtick
16:50he's a very positive guy
16:51that's been very much
16:52his impact at Barcelona
16:54is coming in after Xavi
16:55who did moan a bit
16:56when things weren't quite
16:57how he wanted them to be
16:59which they haven't been
17:00for several years at Barcelona
17:01there's a lot going on
17:02at that club financially
17:03that's difficult
17:03and Hansi Flix
17:05is the guy who came in
17:05took on all the academy players
17:07I think he had nine academy players
17:08in the team
17:08that played the last game
17:10that won the title last season
17:11so he's been doing this
17:13with everyone
17:13but I do think this
17:15with Rashford
17:15is really sincere
17:16when you talk to me
17:17about the club
17:17this summer
17:18when they were looking
17:19for that extra player
17:20that option
17:20to be there
17:21with Rafinha
17:22Lamin-Yamal
17:22who of course
17:23wasn't playing tonight
17:24there was
17:25Nico Williams
17:26who'd been looking at
17:27for a long time
17:27Luis Diaz
17:28these names were being
17:28kicked around
17:29but actually it was Flick
17:30much more than
17:31Decker who's a sporting director
17:32who stuck up for Rashford
17:34and said no
17:34I think he can be part
17:35of this mix as well
17:36Thomas Tuchel
17:37was there tonight
17:38of course
17:38won't do his chances
17:39of being front and centre
17:41of an England squad
17:41for the World Cup
17:42anyhow
17:42but also I wonder
17:43what Ruben Amorim
17:44would be thinking
17:44watching that tonight
17:45I think I'll be thinking
17:47what have I done
17:47I've let that go
17:49and Man United
17:50are obviously struggling
17:51but players need to move on
17:52if it's not going well
17:53because you need to be loved
17:54and Marcus definitely
17:55needs an arm around
17:56and needs to be loved
17:56and when he is
17:57he shows what he can do tonight
17:581989
17:59the last Englishman
18:00to score for Barcelona
18:01Gary Lineker
18:03come on
18:03he used to be around
18:04these parts
18:04all the time
18:05Gary Lineker of course
18:05yeah I mean
18:08they're big boots
18:09to follow aren't they
18:10but of course
18:11you know
18:12tonight
18:12it was Newcastle's
18:14kind of great moment
18:15they were going to try
18:15and repeat the history
18:16of 1987
18:171997
18:18didn't quite come off
18:19for them tonight
18:20in terms of that
18:21but there were some
18:22good signs there
18:23from Newcastle
18:24yeah there was
18:24and I think they started
18:25really well
18:25I think they come out
18:26of the blocks
18:26obviously with that
18:27support they had
18:27on the night
18:28they come out
18:29of the blocks
18:29played really well
18:30for 10 minutes
18:31did really well
18:32for the start of it
18:32and then Alanga
18:34I thought was there
18:35they're a real bright
18:36shining light
18:37for the first half
18:38and what he does do
18:40he knows with his pace
18:41he can beat anybody
18:42running and he lines
18:43people up and goes
18:44at them
18:44he's very direct
18:45and here he does
18:46really well
18:46pulls the ball back
18:47and that for me
18:48is a bad miss
18:49from Anthony Gardner
18:50he should really be
18:50putting that away
18:51again he's keeping his width
18:53he knows he's got him
18:54one on one
18:55he knows he can't
18:55handle his pace
18:56puts a
18:57not a great pass
18:58in there
18:59but the fact of the matter
19:00is he's now worrying
19:01that fullback's worrying
19:01about him
19:02and this for me
19:02was the one
19:03running from deep
19:03with a high line
19:04that Barcelona
19:05were playing all night
19:07that was the run
19:07that should be doing
19:08a lot more
19:08he puts a good ball
19:09in here
19:09and to be fair
19:10Barnes
19:10very unlucky there
19:11he's a good save
19:12there
19:14but for now
19:15literally
19:15he knows
19:16that fullback knows
19:17I don't want to get
19:18one on one with him
19:19he's just murdering him
19:20and I was surprised
19:21that he got brought off
19:21in fairness
19:22I thought he was the one
19:23that could really
19:24really destroy them
19:25like he did in the first half
19:27but I think if you've got
19:28a number nine in there
19:29I'm not sure what the
19:30thinking was
19:30but if he's in there
19:31I think that's going to be
19:32a lot more of a chance
19:33for us four weeks ago
19:34and get on the end of that
19:35on an older number nine
19:36back in the day
19:37I'm certain Alan Shearer
19:37would have scored
19:38it was interesting
19:40because when the
19:40substitutes came on
19:42and Volta Marder
19:42and Murphy in particular
19:43who of course
19:44were at the weekend
19:46instrumental
19:47and the win for Newcastle
19:49things changed
19:49yeah
19:50yeah absolutely they did
19:51I think the starting three
19:52that they planned on
19:53was all about speeding behind
19:55but with this
19:55Volta Marder
19:56posting up in this position
19:57it makes Barcelona defence
19:58have to defend
19:59in a different sort of way
20:00and there are more questions
20:01being asked
20:01and sort of different questions
20:02as well
20:02and this is a great ball
20:03in from Murphy
20:04and thankful for Gordon's sake
20:05who was able to take this chance
20:06as opposed to the one
20:07which he missed earlier
20:07in the game
20:08but it was an interesting
20:09sort of set of substitutions
20:10because it's very much
20:11a change of style
20:12in this moment
20:13the left back
20:14like
20:14where do I go
20:15do I pick this person
20:16and I've got to say again
20:18that's a fantastic ball
20:19into the box
20:20and Gordon this time
20:21I think has probably
20:21done the right thing
20:22going with his left foot
20:23this time
20:23I don't know if you'd agree
20:24whereas with the first chance
20:25he went with his right
20:26and he ends up missing the ball
20:27but those subs
20:28are the sort of spark
20:28that you need
20:29and I think if Newcastle
20:30are to be successful
20:30in the Champions League
20:31they do need to be able
20:32to change their style
20:33at times
20:34and I think that did
20:35cause Barcelona problems
20:36but it just wasn't enough
20:36on the day
20:37having a slow start
20:38to the league phase
20:38as last year proved
20:40is no barrier to success
20:42the eventual winners
20:43of course
20:43had a very slow start
20:44didn't they
20:44for ESG
20:45I'm not saying Newcastle
20:46following up
20:47but they've got
20:49you know
20:49they're away at Union SG
20:50next
20:51and you know
20:52there's a real mixed bag
20:53isn't it
20:53the league phase
20:53and you will build momentum
20:55and also
20:55players like Volta Mane
20:56will get more comfortable
20:58in this team
20:58yeah they will
20:59I understand why
21:00Eddie Howe did that today
21:01with the page
21:02because if you look
21:02at the high line
21:03that Barcelona did
21:04it's inviting
21:04a bit of a late running
21:06behind
21:06and you're not going
21:07to catch the likes
21:07of Alanga and Gordon
21:09but going into the later stages
21:11you have to have some control
21:12and pull the ball up
21:13and let you get up there
21:14and the pitch
21:14and start playing in their half
21:15because European football
21:17is totally different
21:18to Premier League football
21:19you have to have some control
21:20of the game
21:20and you have to have it
21:21in their half
21:22otherwise before you know it
21:23five seconds later
21:24you're picking the ball
21:24like your own net
21:25and that happened tonight
21:26it takes a bit of time
21:27to learn that
21:28it does definitely
21:28OK
21:30from the North East
21:31to the North West
21:32for Manchester City's clash
21:33with Serie A champions
21:34Napoli
21:35making their return
21:36to the Champions League
21:37It's been a whirlwind
21:41first year
21:41for Antonio Conte
21:42at Napoli
21:43he delivered the Serie A title
21:45in his first season
21:46but the campaign
21:47was punctuated
21:48with public rumbles
21:48toward the owner
21:49over transfers
21:50at the heart
21:52of that triumph
21:53was Scott McTominay
21:54now a Ballon d'Or nominee
21:56whose goals
21:57drove Napoli
21:57over the line
21:58Tomine's best player
22:00in the Naples
22:01he's amazing
22:02thank you so much
22:03Scotland for this
22:04this summer
22:05the Parc de Naupe
22:06have raised their ambitions
22:07further
22:08additions included
22:10Kevin de Bruyne
22:10this is his first game
22:12back at the Etihad
22:12throw in Rasmus Hoiland
22:14and could Conte's new attack
22:16turn Italy's champions
22:17into Champions League
22:18contenders
22:19it might be early doors
22:21but this is a seismic clash
22:23at the Etihad
22:24commentary comes from Steve Bauer
22:29just 121 days
22:32after his emotional farewell
22:34and having a roamedave
22:35after him
22:36Kevin de Bruyne
22:37returns to the club
22:38with whom he won
22:3916 major honours
22:40including of course
22:42the Champions League
22:43nine of de Bruyne's
22:44former teammates
22:45line up against him
22:46in the same city
22:47starting 11
22:48from the Manchester
22:49Derby victory
22:50as Erling Haaland
22:51searches for his
22:5250th goal
22:53in the competition
22:54as well as de Bruyne
22:56Napoli
22:57have Scott McTominay
22:58and Rasmus Hoiland
22:59returning to Manchester
23:00as Antonio Conte
23:02names the side
23:03that beat Fiorentina
23:04in Serie A
23:05at the weekend
23:06O'Reilly
23:10Nadoku
23:19Rainders
23:23had a look
23:24and that's the question
23:25of Malikovic
23:27Savic
23:27who in the Napoli goal
23:30on his Champions League
23:31debut
23:32wouldn't take
23:33any chances
23:34whatsoever
23:35the first corner
23:38of the game
23:38is Manchester City
23:40Foden with it
23:42over Haaland
23:44straight to
23:44Doku
23:45who was stretching
23:46just couldn't quite
23:47get it under control
23:48Pep Guardiola
23:5217th
23:54Champions League
23:55campaign
23:55when he messes
23:57Ancelotti
23:57Wenger
23:58and Ferguson
23:59can better that
24:00three times
24:03a Champions League
24:04winner
24:05for Kama
24:06O'Reilly's block
24:13Napoli's first corner
24:15in from Politano
24:23oh good save
24:25Donnarumma
24:26flag is now up
24:28for Kama
24:30it was
24:30the Dutch defender
24:31with the header
24:32fantastic reaction
24:35from Donnarumma
24:36Di Lorenzo's
24:46going to need
24:47to make this
24:47and the referee
24:50Felix Veyer
24:51says the Napoli
24:52captain
24:52got the ball
24:53Haaland's asking
24:55for a red card
24:56his German
24:58colleague in
24:58VAR
24:59will of course
25:00thoroughly check this
25:01he's going to need to be
25:02and he's going to need to be
25:03Kama wins the first
25:04header
25:04Haaland's definitely
25:06onside
25:07now does he get
25:08the ball here
25:08Di Lorenzo
25:10this angle will tell us
25:11I don't think he does
25:15Felix Veyer
25:17being sent to the monitor
25:19and when he sees
25:20what we've just seen
25:21the red card will be out
25:23he shouldn't need to watch
25:25this too many times
25:26here we go
25:28confirmation
25:30Giovanni Di Lorenzo
25:33is sent off
25:34the Napoli captain
25:35and they have to play
25:3770 minutes
25:38at the Etihad
25:39with 10 men
25:41and that's a change
25:42to Conte's plan
25:43you have to say
25:45the referee was
25:46behind the ball
25:47when he gave
25:48the initial decision
25:49he didn't have
25:49the greatest of use
25:50and that is a good use
25:52of VAR
25:53because that is
25:54quite clearly
25:54a red card
25:56at the end of all that
25:59of course
26:00it is a Manchester City
26:01free kick too
26:02Foden and Reinders
26:04behind this
26:05could it be
26:06double punishment
26:08Reinders effort blocked
26:10off the bank of
26:12Lubaka
26:13Doku staying wide
26:20and in space
26:21Doku kept it in
26:26crossed in by Reinders
26:28and Haaland
26:29will be disappointed
26:30that was inviting
26:32posted in by the Dutchman
26:35just couldn't quite
26:36get over it
26:37Erling Haaland
26:37huge leap
26:39and there's huge
26:40disappointment here
26:41for Kevin De Bruyne
26:43because he
26:4425 minutes
26:46into his homecoming
26:47is the one
26:49sacrificed
26:50by Antonio Conte
26:52where he'll be
26:55hurting inside
26:56he's professional
26:57on the outside
26:58but that's not
27:00how he's
27:01envisaged
27:02returning to the
27:03Etihad
27:03and that is
27:06to allow
27:07the Uruguayan
27:08Mateus Solivera
27:10to come on
27:11who is a recognised
27:12fullback
27:12in from Bernardo Silva
27:21downward header
27:22denied
27:22by Malenkovich
27:23Savage again
27:24and it was
27:25Nico O'Reilly
27:26that time
27:27and his full
27:30Champions League
27:31debut
27:31off the turf
27:33and a very good
27:34stretch
27:35from the Serbian
27:35he's at it again
27:36this time
27:38this time
27:38to Danai
27:38Gvardiel
27:39back in
27:40from Foden
27:40Napoli
27:43are rocking
27:43here
27:44that's
27:45Hoyland's block
27:46that's Kusinov
27:48which wipes
27:50out
27:50Politano
27:52it's another
27:54brilliant stop
27:55from the
27:56Serbian goalkeeper
27:57Diaz
28:02thought about it
28:03set in
28:05Bernardo
28:05silver instead
28:06and he's
28:10found
28:10Reinders
28:11and somehow
28:12somehow
28:14they survive
28:15and Politano
28:16cheers it
28:17like a goal
28:18the Reinders
28:19did it
28:20and Politano
28:21stretched
28:21and Malenkovich
28:23Savage
28:23just stopped
28:24it going
28:24over the line
28:25and so far
28:27they're still
28:27keeping
28:28Manchester City
28:29out
28:29docker
28:37Foden
28:39trying to
28:40take it
28:40in his
28:40stride
28:41and pulling
28:43it right
28:43across the
28:44face
28:44fresh
28:45from his
28:46goal
28:47here
28:47at the
28:48weekend
28:48and Riley
28:58for City
28:59Rodrik
29:05Foden
29:06trying to
29:07feed
29:07Haaland
29:08oh that's
29:09brilliant
29:09it had to be
29:15him
29:15breakthrough
29:16at last
29:17for Manchester
29:18City
29:18and it's
29:21yet another
29:21record for
29:22Arling Haaland
29:23that's a
29:24half century
29:25of Champions
29:27League goals
29:2750 in
29:3049
29:31and in
29:33terms of
29:33this context
29:34a much
29:35needed
29:35City goal
29:36Foden
29:38to find
29:41Doku
29:41numbers
29:46forward
29:46here
29:46City
29:47O'Reilly
29:56O'Reilly
29:56Doku
30:00oh brilliant
30:02fabulous
30:04wizardry
30:07from Jeremy
30:09Doku
30:09his second
30:37Champions League
30:38goal
30:38and it's
30:402-0
30:40Manchester
30:41City
30:41a man
30:43advantage
30:43and now
30:44a two
30:45goal
30:45advantage
30:46a hugely
30:50satisfying
30:50start
30:51to the
30:52campaign
30:52for the
30:532023
30:53winners
30:54with a
30:56man
30:56advantage
30:56for 70
30:57minutes
30:57they end
30:58with a
30:59two
30:59goal
30:59advantage
31:00and another
31:01clean sheet
31:02for Donnarumma
31:03to boot
31:04and yet
31:05another
31:05record
31:06for Erling
31:07Haaland
31:07Manchester
31:08City
31:092
31:09Napoli
31:100
31:10first
31:14half
31:14was a bit
31:14frustrating
31:15I wasn't
31:16getting many
31:17touches in
31:17between the
31:18lines
31:18due to how
31:19well they
31:19was keeping
31:20tight together
31:21in the
31:22midfield
31:22but I knew
31:22second half
31:23once the game
31:23opened up a
31:24little bit
31:24there'll be
31:24that one or
31:25two chances
31:25where I can
31:26maybe turn
31:26on the
31:27ball
31:27and I
31:28managed to
31:29turn on
31:29the ball
31:29and some
31:30have been
31:30working on
31:30in training
31:31Erling's
31:31always going
31:32to make
31:32that run
31:32I already
31:33know he's
31:33there
31:33before I
31:35even played
31:35the ball
31:35so yeah
31:36it's just
31:37about getting
31:37that connection
31:38and trying
31:39to do it
31:39again now
31:39and hopefully
31:40he can score
31:40more goals
31:41and hopefully
31:41I can assist
31:42So we are
31:42still better
31:43than the last
31:43season
31:43when we
31:44draw against
31:44Inter
31:45here
31:45so yeah
31:47we play
31:47of course
31:48play a lot
31:48of Mino
31:48with 10
31:49it was an
31:49advantage
31:49but in
31:51the same
31:51time
31:51we were
31:51not
31:52I would
31:54say
31:54stressed
31:55in that
31:56situation
31:56but we
31:57played
31:57good
31:57with 11
31:58with 10
31:58and a
31:59big victory
32:00against
32:00incredible
32:00topside
32:01so the
32:02team in
32:02the last
32:02two games
32:03took another
32:04feeling
32:05our composers
32:07defensively
32:08offensively
32:08our body
32:08language
32:09is
32:09unbelievable
32:10good
32:11so yeah
32:12very pleased
32:12because it was a tough season
32:13a tough week
32:14of course we have an incredible challenge on Sunday
32:16but going there with these feelings is much better
32:19well Nadim you can see that it was a dominant performance from Manchester City
32:24in the end but actually the sending off really did change everything
32:27yeah yes it did I thought City did start well but from the moment that red card
32:31came into play then you can see the two tactics basically change I think from a
32:34Napoli standpoint you're doing the best you can to try and stay in the game
32:37but essentially you know these are the mistakes you can't afford to make
32:39and in this instance I thought Di Lorenzo was going to get the ball there
32:42and initially I thought maybe he got a touch to it
32:44but this is just a sense of desperation he's misjudged that moment and Erling Holland's
32:49running through towards your goal you think you can get it but for me that's red card
32:52and I imagine most people would agree with that as well
32:54and from then from a Napoli perspective
32:56how difficult is your job playing away from home in the Champions League against the side
32:59who are you know looking to sort of redeem themselves based on how they were last year
33:02yeah it's a shame Kevin De Bruyne was the kind of sacrificial lamb wasn't he in that moment as well
33:07for the Man City fans who wanted to celebrate him and those of us who kind of enjoyed those moments
33:12yeah absolutely and it's not just the Man City fans like the Napoli fans have really enjoyed him so far
33:16this season as well so to only get 25 minutes of him is a sad day yeah
33:19let's talk a little bit more about the character of Di Lorenzo because he said pre-match didn't he
33:24that we can't make mistakes he's the stalwart of the club he's the captain
33:27so he was he was really obviously devastated to be leaving the match at that point
33:32yeah it was a tough moment for anyone but I think Di Lorenzo has really been through it a bit the last few years
33:37he's been there since 2019 which doesn't sound that long but they've been through seven managers in that time
33:41there's been quite a few eras from Ancelotti through to happy eras with Spalletti and obviously now with Conte
33:47but there was also the season the 23-24 season where they went through three different managers in one season
33:52he was very much one of the scapegoats Di Lorenzo
33:54there was a few scenes at the end of that season where the fans were calling on to the Cordova
33:59and basically telling him they wanted him out on his ear which is when you're the club captain
34:02quite a lot to go through so the fact he's stuck through it but he's come in with Conte
34:06he had a real bounce back season last season played so well and as you say Gabby before the game he was
34:11the one saying the one thing we can't do is make a critical mistake and of course he's the one who does
34:17and of course then there's a low block and they're just very very defensive and it's very difficult
34:22for City to find a way through at first yeah absolutely and it's understandable I think as
34:26you look at the way that Napoli played they were going to be defensively solid anyway and I think
34:29losing a play basically meant that they just made a couple of adjustments but still from a City
34:32perspective you're trying to find the spaces and I think looking at Ryan has been founded there
34:36they're in good areas but realistically they can't receive the ball because Napoli were doing so well
34:41to force City out wide and that's essentially the way that you'd hope to be able to do it
34:44as a defensive side but every so often they would find a bit of space and there was nearly some
34:49magic here from Rinders and that would have been a great goal but and again it's just it's kind of
34:53off the cuff but from a City perspective they were patient and I think for me that's something that's
34:58key when you are playing against a team with a play less because you need to be able to pick your
35:01moments find the right passes not be forcing out and this was a great ball from Phil Foden and you
35:05could say he was kind of preparing us for something we might see a little bit later but again Foden himself
35:10is somebody that can receive the ball in tight areas with players around him and he'll be disappointed
35:14they've not hit the target there but again he's finding the ball in the right areas in the right
35:18spaces prime example here it's a good ball from Rodri in a second but as soon as Foden gets in that
35:22space people know to move around and not least of all one Erling Haaland and as we see the pass being
35:27played here the take on the back foot and that little touch and that header such a good header yeah
35:32that's outrageous that's the type of thing that you'll probably see in training when people are
35:35messing around but he said that they have practices in training and you know for it to come off in that
35:41moment it's it's remarkable because the likes of Phil Foden their ability to find space is one
35:45thing but then the timing of the run from Haaland as well is perfect and the header like I say the
35:50movement from Foden the ball almost takes a shine away from how good that header is from Haaland the
35:54instinct to be a goalkeeper who felt like it was inspired to that point and the awareness as well the
35:58awareness with the headers amazing their fastest to 50 goals and 13 ahead of Rude and Vancey
36:04players on there right yeah I mean that is a list isn't it to be top of and it all started in 2019
36:09with a hat trick for Salzburg and you know it's just he's raced there hasn't he hmm it's been
36:14absolutely remarkable and I think the fact that he's still arguably not his absolute peak yet you do
36:19wonder how his career is going to carry on as well some very good individual and exciting performances
36:23in Doku right up there tonight yeah he was I think he's been a top player for a couple of years for
36:28me now but he's never really been a game winner never been a game change he's always been a little bit of
36:32fits and starts and little nice little bits but tonight and over the last few six months I mean
36:37this goal he scores tonight there when he gets the ball he sees the ball in the middle and goes at
36:41people there he slows people up goes past that finish is a brilliant finish but this is this is
36:46going to be a real a real player for Man City for the next few years he's now become a match winner I
36:51mean this bit is just now there when he slows the guy up goes one way checks it away no one gets near
36:57him a bit of bad defending from my my point of view really but the the ability to go past people and
37:02the burst of pace that he's got and the low sense of gravity it's it's phenomenal it could be a big
37:06season for him if he keeps playing like this Naden I believe so yeah and I think the fact that
37:10Guardiola is using him slightly differently like very rarely would we see him that central but we
37:14saw it even at the in the derby game on the weekend as well I think he knows the system and the manager
37:19trusts him and I've got to say as well the way that he dribbles like it's a nightmare for a defender
37:23because it's those constant changes of speed and when a player can go inside or outside you're
37:27constantly trying to guess yourself well second guess like is it this way or is it that such crowd
37:31pleasing football that isn't it I mean you just can't not love it as a neutral if there's a chance
37:36for somebody to look back at that goal look at the crowd and you see them get up off their seats
37:39so instead of just saying that people actually do it let's talk about Conte Nicky because he's pretty
37:43much done everything in the game but this is the one thing missing on his CV yeah everything except
37:49for when the Champions League he's really struggled with it in coaching and you can see his track record
37:53there quarterfinals all the way back with the events in 2012-13 and since then has never gone past
37:58the last 16 and when you think that he's coaching that time not only Juventus but also Inter, Chelsea,
38:04Tottenham he's had some clubs who should be capable of aspiring to be in the later stages of a tournament
38:09and when you think back as well to what's happened right after he's left some of those clubs under
38:13different managers and the infamous line with Conte is when he was at Juventus and he would complain as
38:19he does about not getting quite what he wants in the transfer market and his phrase was
38:23where you can't go to a 100 euro restaurant with a 10 euro bill and expect to get a good dinner
38:27and then of course the very next season after he goes Max Allegri with his 10 euro bill goes to the
38:32final and similar at Inter who of course were in the final two years after he left with Simone Inzaghi so
38:37this has been his I don't know his black beast the thing he can't quite get through but one day
38:44perhaps maybe this season we'll see something different.
38:46I think this is a real shame we didn't see what they can do this this game I think as Nedim has
38:52already said once you're a player down it's just a different game of football and they hadn't started
38:57particularly enterprising I think they were going to play on the counter in this game but you just
39:01can't assess it because it was.
39:02Well we've already said the league phase is long isn't it you know you've got eight games to get
39:06yourself hopefully into that top eight if not you know you're going to obviously have a playoff but
39:10it's a long time it will be there in a minute won't we we'll be at Christmas before we know it and we'll be
39:14talking about kind of do or die moments. Right Club Bruges reached the round of 16 last season
39:20and started this campaign by hosting Monaco whose journey to Belgium was disrupted after a fault with
39:25the plane that they were traveling in it left the contingent on the plane rather sticky and there
39:30was only one way to deal with that get their kit off. Their flight was eventually cancelled and then
39:35they had to travel the next day hopefully fully clothed.
39:41Tresoldi is Forbes. Tresoldi again. Forbes has gone on here and the cutback is good. Oh it should have been 1-0.
39:52Gonzalez arriving just about in the perfect place on his right side but didn't catch it cleanly at all.
39:58Cleus coming into Balogun Minamino and Biaret nearly onto this and does go down it's a penalty.
40:13Well the first time that Monaco clicked into gear in this game and they get a spot kick.
40:18Magnès Acliouche is going to take this. Can he give Monaco the lead here? No he can't!
40:25It's saved and booted away by the veteran Mignolet. Well he read it well.
40:31It's Simon Mignolet. Acliouche didn't put too much power into it at all.
40:38They've done really well but here's Van Aken. Two square. Tresoldi blocked by Kern.
40:43Van Aken there with just about the perfect ball in to Tresoldi. He couldn't quite scoop it up over Philippe Cohen.
40:53Forbes, a youthful right side for Brugge and Van Aken. I don't think he realized how much space he had.
41:00Tresoldi! This time finds a way through.
41:06So many gaps in this Monaco side. Van Aken with such a delicate ball through and it was an equally
41:12delicate finish from Tresoldi.
41:16Van Aken's corner. A flying header scoops away by Cohen. Forbes across and it's in! It's 2-0!
41:25Raphael Onyedica. Cohen did well enough I guess to scoot it away initially but
41:31when it came back in, Onyedica was in the right place just to get a touch on that.
41:36Chris Zollis standing over this. In the back, Onyedica. Van Aken! Oh that's glorious!
41:48Look at this. Wonderful volley. Just about everything they're touching is turning to gold. More goals now.
41:57He says across, Tresoldi leaves it. Diakon with a chance! Klopp-Rugge have fought!
42:13Diakon had so much time, no one closing him down.
42:17Pitiful defending and punished in the harshest possible way.
42:21Minamino. Another set and this time they do have a goal.
42:32Ansu Fati with his first for the club on his debut. Off the bench to add nothing more than a consolation
42:38for Le Monegas. Klopp-Rugge 4, Monaco 1.
42:42Last 16 last season and of course they had to qualify by beating Rangers to get into the Champions
42:50League proper this time but they're looking just as good as they were last time out.
42:54Oh absolutely and in two players, Carlos Forbes and Solis, they look so dangerous. I think
42:59what I like about Forbes is how direct he is, which whoever he's going to be playing against,
43:03he's going to really try and take it to them with his speed, with his keen eye for a pass as well.
43:08He wants to make a difference for the side and I like the fact that he always tries to finish the
43:11action. He's not just going to take up the pitch and then just go back, he's trying to win something,
43:15he's trying to have a shot, he's trying to create an assist and to be honest, some of the final balls
43:19they weren't as good to say maybe he'd hope but he persists, he keeps going, he keeps going, he keeps
43:23going, creating chance after chance after chance and Solis himself on this day as well. Maybe he'd
43:28score a few more but this is the one I love more than anything. It's two versus one, it's against him,
43:31he shouldn't be able to do this but instead here he goes driving and that's a great ball,
43:35especially while he's falling over and in this instance you want him to score. I think the goalkeeper
43:40read that from probably a few days earlier but it's a nice moment and now as well for following
43:45up the play, creating the chance and making a difference for the side and as you can see he
43:49absolutely loves it and even in this moment he shows that he doesn't just do it with the ball,
43:53he's prepared to wait in space and previously we've been seeing him take it onto his left foot,
43:57well he'll take it onto his right as well and he'll be disappointed because even though he had a big
44:02part in this game he didn't get that goal himself and I think that would have made a big difference for his
44:05confidence. A great result for them, great start, great start for Belgian football Germany with Union
44:10SG getting a win as well. Yeah it's astonishing and Bruges obviously we saw them last season and they
44:15were excellent and progressed into the knockout stages but I think when you consider the players
44:19they've sold this summer to Shari to Milan to Kuiper went to Brighton, Talby to Sunderland,
44:24big players in that team have gone and they've reloaded with some teenagers basically and look the team's
44:29still performing like that. Yeah and Union SG of course will be Newcastle's next opponents as well.
44:34Okay, it has been a successful week for Champions League debutants so far,
44:38next it was the turn of Kairat Almaty from Kazakhstan who knocked Celtic out in qualifying.
44:44They made the longest journey in the competition's history for their opener,
44:47nearly four and a half thousand miles to the Portuguese capital to take on sporting.
44:57They've given it away, been caught a little bit cold here, big opportunity,
45:03good save by the youngster, starting to find their rhythm here sporting.
45:12And then there's a lunge, quick feet from Suarez and the Polish referee points to the spot.
45:20It will be Morton Hulmand against the 18-year-old Shurkan Kalmurza, remember his first ever senior start.
45:31It's Hulmand, he does save it!
45:33It was penalties that got them this far. And again, a spot kick is central to the drama.
45:43There's a drive tipped over. What a talent he is, Destin Sappaev. The save from Joao Virginia.
45:56Here's Hulmand. Now it might open up for Suarez!
46:05Thuds off the post. A moment full of intent from the Colombian. Goalkeeper was beaten that time.
46:14And that's a really good hit from Trincao!
46:22The frustration ends two minutes before half-time.
46:26It's gone through the young goalkeeper this time. It's a sweet hit from Trincao.
46:31Suarez has kept running here and he gets there and it's off the crossbar.
46:41The young goalkeeper misjudged it completely.
46:45Kalmurza breathes a huge sigh of relief.
46:50More open game now.
46:53And Sporting take advantage of that. They just might right here, right now.
46:57Now! Trincao again.
47:04Clean, pure finish. Casually into the top corner.
47:13Kenda wants to join the party here. Oh, it's opened. Oh, but it's in!
47:19Now they turn on the style. Alison makes it free.
47:25Suddenly, Kairat looks desperately tired. And suddenly they know there is now no way back.
47:37Look at the spring in the step. Look at the confidence flowing through them here.
47:41And Kenda now joins the party! Oh!
47:44He's the one they talk about. He's the one who makes the noise.
47:52He's the one who announces himself with a goal of sheer brilliance.
47:59Three goals in three minutes. Kairat blown away.
48:07That's the angle past silence all around. But they hope for their moment and they have their moment.
48:13They have their first Champions League goal.
48:17A special hit from Ed Mielsen.
48:27Frankfurt's only previous Champions League appearance was as Europa League winners under Oliver Glasner three years ago.
48:33They kicked off the new campaign against Turkish giants Galatasaray.
48:36They kicked off the new campaign against Kairat.
48:43We go, Larsson dispossessed. Could be costly. Leroy Zane on the carry.
48:48And flip forwards nicely.
48:50Yuna Zakun!
48:52How about that?
48:55Well, Larsson won't want to see that again.
48:58He was mugged in midfield by Leroy Zane.
49:00Yuna Zakun definitely onside.
49:04And he absolutely did Collins there.
49:08And then did the rest with a minimum of fuss through the legs.
49:15They've given the ball away badly here.
49:17Yilmaz.
49:19Gudduan.
49:21Ooh, what's that a hand?
49:22Right on the edge of the area will be a free kick.
49:27He is just outside the area, isn't he?
49:31Mightily fortunate.
49:33Oh, Kiki!
49:34And what a miss!
49:37Baris, Alper, Yilmaz, Skye's an incredible chance.
49:45In from Shevy.
49:46Cock got up there.
49:47Oh, Burkhardt somehow didn't make contact.
49:51Well, Burkhardt missed it.
49:53It was nearly put into his own net by El Mali here.
49:57Would have been a real comedy of errors, that.
50:02Is it?
50:06Well, we're back!
50:08And it's in!
50:13It's a really good piece of control.
50:16And then he gets lucky with the finish.
50:20He's done, who is one of those making his Champions League debut tonight.
50:27Burkhardt, not a bad ball.
50:29Good turn!
50:30Oh, what a goal!
50:31From one down, Shrekford fight back to take the lead.
50:39And are in front, in style.
50:42And they might get another here!
50:48They have!
50:50Three times in the space of ten minutes or so.
50:55off the header of Burkhardt, Zingo for another Galatasaray-owned goal.
51:00For another defeat to Bundesliga opposition.
51:10As they can really rally themselves, but they're on the back foot here.
51:15Browns cross!
51:16Oh, it's gone in!
51:19Jonathan Burkhardt got the header, but the final touch is off for Galatasaray-owned.
51:26Not that they care, one shot.
51:28Need to be forced into an error there, he has been!
51:35And here's a chance for a fifth!
51:39Frankfurt are running riot!
51:43Asghar Knau gets in on the act!
51:46It's a five-star Frankfurt showing as they return to the Champions League with a bang!
51:57Copenhagen came through three rounds of qualifying to get to the lead phase.
52:00The Danish champions began against Bayer Leverkusen,
52:03who recently sacked Erik Ten Hag and replaced him with new manager Kasper Kulmunt.
52:16Vazquez, it's kept in well, Larson!
52:20Fine goal! Lovely finish!
52:24Perfectly timed run from the Swede, Jordan Larson.
52:28The really good play down the late flag as far as Copenhagen were concerned by Ashuri,
52:36and Larson was there to gobble up the chance.
52:41This is Larson, passes on, the run is excellent.
52:46It's El Yannoussi.
52:49And it might land in the goal, it kisses the barn, it's way behind.
52:53El Yannoussi going very close to doubling Copenhagen's lead.
53:00Lucas Vazquez.
53:04Better, quicker move.
53:06Doesn't bring any reward, but that is exactly what the coach,
53:12Kasper Hildman, will be looking for.
53:16Surely going to be Grimaldo to strike.
53:22Oh, it's magnificent!
53:26Well, this boy has got wonderful technique.
53:32And you could have had two goalkeepers in there and they wouldn't have stopped it.
53:36Right into the top corner.
53:41Lopez with the switch pass, picks out Zaghi.
53:44Huesca's in support.
53:46This is good from FC Copenhagen.
53:48Free hit-out goal!
53:50Brilliantly worked, it's Robert Silva.
53:53And Bayer Leverkusen, who'd begun to get on top, following their equaliser,
53:59are caught napping by an excellent counter-attack.
54:02Joy around most of the Park End stadium here, and they crafted it supremely well.
54:10Bayer Leverkusen have come to the party in the second half,
54:19being vastly improved.
54:20And they're in here, Echeverry, and it deflected in.
54:26Wonderful response from Bayer Leverkusen.
54:30That's an own goal from Pantelis, Haxidakios, the Greek centre-back.
54:36It ends at the Park End stadium, Copenhagen 2, Bayer Leverkusen 2.
54:45Okay, for what it's worth, we're going to show you how the giant league table looks so far.
54:50And we're in the second season of this new format, where each of the 36 sides play eight games
54:55against eight different teams between now and January.
54:58After that, the top eight qualify automatically for the knockout stage.
55:01The next 16 go into a playoff round for the remaining eight knockout places,
55:05and the bottom 12 are illimited.
55:06They don't go into any other European competitions.
55:08So let's have a look at some of the reaction from around Europe so far.
55:21Madrid Daily sports paper AS run the headline Final Cruel, or Cruel Ending,
55:26in response to Atletico's late defeat at Anfield.
55:29German sports magazine Kicker label Bayern forward Harry Kane the encourager
55:34after his double in the win over Chelsea, adding that the hunt for the trophy is off to a good start.
55:39And Corriere dello Sport react to Inter's win over Ajax with the headline Go Christian,
55:45after head coach Christian Kivu led his side to victory at his former club.
55:51Okay, it is week one. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
55:54But Nikki Bandini, your job is to tell us the Italian side.
55:57Do you think, from what you've seen, will go furthest in the competition?
55:59Yeah, it's so early to tell, but I'd still go with Inter just because of the pedigree from last season,
56:04the fact that they've been there and done it. But Christian Kivu, as that headline suggested,
56:07we still don't really know if he's up to following Simone and Zaghi, so we'll see.
56:11And Nikki Butt and Nader Manu, your job is to tell me who's going to win the Champions League,
56:14from what you've seen this week.
56:15Do you want to go first? You must know.
56:16I think from what I've seen tonight with Barcelona, with Lamal coming back in as well,
56:21I think they'll be there and thereabouts. They look really good football team tonight.
56:25Pedro was amazing. They just look powerful up front and very solid at the back, so I'll be looking at Barcelona.
56:31I think for me, because it's the Champions League, it'd be very, very tough to not say that Real Madrid
56:36are probably going to be playing in the final, especially given the fact that they weren't there last year.
56:40So I'm going Real Madrid.
56:41I think you've kind of just wormed your way out of that one there.
56:46For more reaction from tonight, check out the Football Daily on BBC Sounds.
56:50Friday night, though, is Bundesliga night on iPlayer.
56:53The latest instalment sees Stuttgart take on St Pauli.
56:57And the World Athletics Championships continues on BBC Two tomorrow,
57:00with KJT beginning her heptathlon title defence.
57:03And it's the semi-finals of the Women's Rugby World Cup this weekend.
57:06New Zealand are up against Canada, that's tomorrow night on BBC Two,
57:09before France against England is on Saturday afternoon.
57:12Join us for both of those live from Bristol.

57:26Good night.
