00:00:00Running Michelin tyres, Gionetta Zytek's both running Dunlop.
00:00:03Now Dunlop made great advances in 2009 with their tyre, no one can doubt that.
00:00:11Have Michelin moved on another step, doing a lot of testing with Stracca,
00:00:15we would like to explore that, but also we'd like to improve the car
00:00:19in looking at the regulations we think we can.
00:00:22I think the engine package clearly in the HVD is pretty sensational as well.
00:00:26I mean, it's got great horsepower, it's got great food economy as well.
00:00:31It's a pretty awesome package.
00:00:33Yeah, you look at it and you see the improvements.
00:00:36Obviously, we look at the other car that's also, I believe, on Dunlop tyres,
00:00:39which is the RML car, and that's improved since it changed from AER.
00:00:46So, yeah, it's definitely pushed them forward.
00:00:48Yeah, they've certainly had the next problems under the bonnet,
00:00:51but they seem at the moment to be replaced by other problems in other areas.
00:00:54So, yeah, I was just talking to Ray Mallock,
00:00:57well, just before the pit stop there, that Andy Wallace took over from Mike Newton,
00:01:02and the car's been running absolutely flawlessly.
00:01:05I think Tommy Edwards hit a rabbit at some stage a little while ago.
00:01:09Didn't, thankfully, well, depending on which way you're looking at it,
00:01:12the rabbit came off somewhat worse than the racing car.
00:01:14That's good news for the racing team, not so good news for the rabbit.
00:01:19They've also, other than that, though, the car's been running pretty much flawlessly.
00:01:23They've been triple stinting the tyres on that RML car,
00:01:27and the only sort of a problem is towards the end of the third stint
00:01:31there'd be quite a bit of rubber pickup on the inside and outside edges of the tyre,
00:01:37and that creates quite a vibration.
00:01:39And at one point they had to come in a little bit early to change tyres
00:01:42because they weren't sure, you know, they didn't want that vibration to get out of hand,
00:01:46and it was making things pretty tricky from the driving side of it as well.
00:01:49Also, they lost some time with that very first safety car period way early in the race
00:01:54as a result of the Nigel Mansfield crash,
00:01:57and that cost them also about half a lap or so as well
00:02:00because they were held at the end of the pit lane, and so that didn't work out.
00:02:05But other than that, the car's running absolutely beautifully,
00:02:06and they are, you know, delighted with the performance.
00:02:10Well, just for those who were probably watching a rather tepid England-USA 1-1 draw
00:02:16and haven't caught up with things on the BBC's fleeting coverage of it,
00:02:20very quickly, before we put you and it to bed,
00:02:23just final word on how Nigel was after his crash
00:02:26because obviously there was an awful lot of focus on getting him out of the car and everything.
00:02:29Yeah, we've heard that Nigel flew back to Jersey and he's at home watching TV,
00:02:34and if Nigel's listening, watching Eurosport, I hope you're OK, Nigel, and getting well soon.
00:02:40Absolutely, and really hope that we see him again.
00:02:44I know the boys are back at San Marlowe ready to go on a crossing if they can get out of the pub.
00:02:51So I'm sure, obviously, the overriding feeling there is OK, great that he's OK,
00:02:57but really, oh, the disappointment, the frustration, perhaps even more than disappointment,
00:03:02of coming here and being so keyed up and ready to go,
00:03:06and all of that anticipation and preparation just kind of evaporates,
00:03:10and I'm sure the desire must be, right, straight away, I want to come back and do this thing now.
00:03:17Well, we'd really hope so, and I was really looking forward to seeing Greg in the P1 car,
00:03:22having driven with Greg and Nigel.
00:03:24I know how quick Greg can be.
00:03:27He doesn't know the circuit at all, and I think you can never really underestimate the challenge,
00:03:33and having three guys, none of them have driven around here in a prototype at all,
00:03:40and coming here with a new team, it was a huge, huge, huge ask.
00:03:43And it's a shame that, you know, I think they were probably let down by picking up something and having a rear puncture.
00:03:52Looks like the analysis of what's happened from looking at the data, but, you know, we're not absolutely certain about that.
00:03:59We do seem to have an awful lot of punctures this whole week, in actual fact,
00:04:03and that has been the handicap for the number 26 Haikoff Racing HPD.
00:04:09Marco Werner had two punctures earlier on in the evening.
00:04:13Marino had, Franchitti had one about a bit over an hour ago,
00:04:17and the bad news, the even worse bad news from Marino is he picked up the puncture going up towards the Dunlop curve,
00:04:23and has to therefore do a complete eight and a half mile lap.
00:04:26Yeah, so, yeah, 242 middle sector, it looks like, and I saw that, and I thought,
00:04:31I really hope that engine hasn't blown up.
00:04:35I imagine you did, yeah.
00:04:36Yeah, so that and the other delays that it explains,
00:04:39that's why that car is now three laps down to the race leader,
00:04:45which is still Danny Watson, that Stratka car, which has been going absolutely magnificently.
00:04:49A couple other quick notes, we've talked about the number 82 Ruti Competizione Ferrari
00:04:54being officially retired around about one o'clock in the morning.
00:04:58That is the ongoing gear selection difficulties that you had alluded to.
00:05:02They did fix it, but it was just sort of, the problem was resurfacing again,
00:05:07and rather than risk having either damage to the engine transmission and or crash in a car,
00:05:13they just decided, you know, they were out of control to win the race.
00:05:16There really wasn't my point in carrying on, so they parked that car.
00:05:18They didn't want to do anything worse to it.
00:05:21And the other guy, interesting guy I had a chat to was Xavier Masson,
00:05:24who's tried the number 673 Luc Alfon de Corvette.
00:05:28And that, in fact, is indeed the same Corvette that just has a different colour scheme,
00:05:34which he races for the Mad Crop team in the FAA GT1 World Championship.
00:05:40And that car is running absolutely beautifully.
00:05:42The only delay for that number 73 car,
00:05:44and the only reason why it is second in class to that Celine,
00:05:48which I think has run pretty much flawlessly.
00:05:51But I think the gap now is down to maybe just over a lap,
00:05:55but certainly not much more than that,
00:05:57between the number 50 Celine and the number 73 Corvette,
00:06:00was the fact that Patrice Gouselard, about three or four hours ago,
00:06:05had an off shortly after a restart from a safety car period.
00:06:10He just got caught out and told cold tyres,
00:06:12damaged the front of the car,
00:06:13fairly substantially,
00:06:14had to completely change the nose of the car,
00:06:16and that cost them about 20 minutes.
00:06:17So without that,
00:06:20you know, ifs and ands and buts,
00:06:22then they'd be leading the class,
00:06:23and they're still running low in second place.
00:06:26Yeah, they're two laps behind,
00:06:27but they have done two pit stops less.
00:06:30So that shows that Celine has had a problem or so of its own as well.
00:06:35And as you say, you know,
00:06:36it's very easy to get caught out on cold tyres behind a safety car,
00:06:39loop the car around on cold tyres out of the pits,
00:06:42or any number of different things you can do
00:06:44in the next dozen hours of racing
00:06:46that can undo a two-lap lead,
00:06:49just as you're sitting there swearing at yourself for making the mistake.
00:06:52That's right,
00:06:52because it is pretty cool out there this evening.
00:06:54You know,
00:06:54we've had the conditions through the race so far
00:06:57have actually been pretty remarkably nice,
00:06:59haven't they,
00:06:59at launch,
00:07:00but it is pretty cool out there.
00:07:01And, you know,
00:07:01if you're behind a safety car,
00:07:03these tyres do cool down,
00:07:05and when the tyres cool down,
00:07:06they lose their effectiveness in a very big way.
00:07:10I think that's when you're delighted
00:07:11to have somebody like Tom Christensen in your car,
00:07:14and you know he's on top of his game.
00:07:16And just picking up on the point you made about the 13 laps,
00:07:21I understand that Tom's managing to do 13 laps in his car,
00:07:24and I don't know if we're putting that down to him
00:07:27not being a left-foot breaker.
00:07:29You see,
00:07:29he's probably a little bit more economical in that car.
00:07:32There are all sorts of different ways,
00:07:34aren't there,
00:07:34of driving very quickly and saving the car's thirst,
00:07:37and that is,
00:07:38yes,
00:07:39reputedly one of them around here.
00:07:41Left-foot braking tends to be very good in sprint racing,
00:07:44but tends to be a little hard,
00:07:46because you're trying to slow the car
00:07:47while also keeping the gas on,
00:07:49and that tends to be not the best way
00:07:51of keeping the fuel consumption down.
00:07:52Christensen has just stopped in fifth,
00:07:54Anthony Davidson just stopping now
00:07:56in sixth position behind him.
00:07:58The difference really between the two of them
00:08:00is that Anthony has spent already five minutes more
00:08:02after his delay in the pit lane
00:08:06than Tom Christensen did.
00:08:07Don't forget,
00:08:07Tom Christensen also lost time on the track,
00:08:10whereas Davidson came in at normal racing pace,
00:08:12so much longer time in the pits
00:08:15is what's dropped them down to,
00:08:17or his team down to,
00:08:18sixth position in the overall standings
00:08:21and in P1 Christensen.
00:08:23In fifth,
00:08:23of course,
00:08:23that car going off when Tom was at the wheel
00:08:26as he tried to get around the outside
00:08:28of Andy Priot's slowing BMW art car,
00:08:33which has since retired as well.
00:08:35So Peugeot,
00:08:36Peugeot,
00:08:36Audi,
00:08:37Audi,
00:08:38and then a recovering Audi
00:08:39and a recovering Peugeot.
00:08:40I think it's pretty safe to say,
00:08:43Lawrence,
00:08:43that by daylight,
00:08:45the order is unlikely to be exactly as it is now.
00:08:48However,
00:08:49it's very hard to see that man's team,
00:08:51Olivier Canel's Peugeot team,
00:08:53losing its stranglehold on the race,
00:08:55barring some kind of fairly major misfortune.
00:08:58Well,
00:08:58we had four Peugeots at the front,
00:09:00and now we've got two,
00:09:01but we still have three Audis sat behind them,
00:09:03and they're not one and two laps down,
00:09:09so the race is far from over.
00:09:14Picking up on the point about the pickup
00:09:16and the vibration,
00:09:19running three stints on the Michelin's
00:09:21on the RML car,
00:09:23I think what you've got to be concerned about that
00:09:24is that with this race,
00:09:28any vibration in the car is very damaging to it,
00:09:30and it can vibrate the smallest part loose
00:09:33and cause you the race as we had last year
00:09:36when we lost a fuel union came loose
00:09:39just through vibration.
00:09:40It's not always wise to run the third stint
00:09:47and pick up the vibration on the car.
00:09:50You can vibrate any nut loose
00:09:53and cause issues.
00:09:56Around here,
00:09:57the straights are so fast
00:09:59that any small outer balance on your tyres,
00:10:01your eyeballs are bouncing around in the socket.
00:10:04Well, so much of this race is really thrown into focus
00:10:07by the huge speed that you carry for so long here.
00:10:10If you go to the Grand Prix at Silverstone,
00:10:12you might get approaching these speeds
00:10:14for a second or two at the end of the hangar straight,
00:10:17but here you're at these sorts of speeds
00:10:20for dozens or 20s, 30s of seconds,
00:10:24and that makes a huge amount of difference
00:10:26to the damage that you can do
00:10:28either by just having a little imbalance
00:10:30or even something, you know,
00:10:32loose in the airstream.
00:10:33You can get ripped off here
00:10:35where you'd never notice it anywhere else.
00:10:37We're going to take a quick commercial break
00:10:39and we'll be back with you live
00:10:41with more action from Le Mans
00:10:42from Le Mans in just a second.
00:10:44Welcome back live to Le Mans
00:10:50as we see the Orica team
00:10:52getting ready for driver change.
00:10:54That is Didier André
00:10:56ready to take over car number six,
00:10:58which is currently being piloted by Sayeli Ar.
00:11:00If you remember last year,
00:11:02Oogde Shonak running a pair of his open prototypes,
00:11:05the Orica AIM, Orica chassis,
00:11:08a development of what was originally
00:11:10the same chassis as Oak Racing
00:11:12are running for, no, that's a P2 class,
00:11:15a development of the Pescarello P1 chassis
00:11:18for which Oogde Shonak bought the rights
00:11:21and then re-engineered it to call it an Orica
00:11:23with an AIM engine,
00:11:26which is a Judd engine
00:11:28with re-engineered cylinder heads
00:11:29by a Japanese company.
00:11:31So essentially it's a Pescarello Judd,
00:11:34although it's called an Orica AIM.
00:11:36So I'll probably get told off for that.
00:11:38Sayeli Ar, Didier André and Andy Merritt
00:11:40are the trio.
00:11:41That has run reasonably reliably,
00:11:43currently in 10th position.
00:11:45While we talked about the leaders
00:11:47in the overall prototype class,
00:11:49P1 being Peugeot and Audi,
00:11:52and Lawrence Thomason,
00:11:53who's just left us from Ginetta,
00:11:54did make the point that
00:11:55although Peugeot are 1, 2,
00:11:57there are three Audis behind them.
00:11:59In fact, then, of course,
00:12:00there is a third Peugeot in 6th position,
00:12:03but then there are more Audis as well.
00:12:05Let's not forget that there are the older Audis,
00:12:07the Coles run Audi R10s,
00:12:10and the best of those is in 9th place
00:12:12behind the two best-placed petrol cars,
00:12:15which are still 007 and 009
00:12:18with Adrian Fernandez,
00:12:20and Juan Barazzi,
00:12:21who's just gone out in the other Golf,
00:12:23Lola Aston Martin,
00:12:25as onto Pit Road comes our third-place car,
00:12:27our best of the five Audis,
00:12:30still in the race,
00:12:30and that is Roman Dumas,
00:12:33takes a drink,
00:12:34throws it away,
00:12:36so he's staying in,
00:12:37it'll just be a fuel stop then,
00:12:38and in the cool of the night now,
00:12:41it's still clear,
00:12:42the lights are working well,
00:12:43the engine's working very well,
00:12:45and even though the air temperature is dropping,
00:12:47the heat in the tarmac
00:12:48is still relatively good,
00:12:50and certainly the heat in the tyres
00:12:51will be more than enough
00:12:52to allow them to lap now
00:12:55at probably close to the fastest
00:12:58they will all race long,
00:13:00as the air temperature drops,
00:13:02but the ground temperature
00:13:03stays relatively stable,
00:13:05which is what happens
00:13:06in a clear skylight tonight,
00:13:08then you get a temperature inversion,
00:13:09cold layer of air
00:13:10comes down from the atmosphere,
00:13:12and holds the air close to the ground,
00:13:14and in that air
00:13:15will be lots of moisture
00:13:17that has risen from the overnight rain
00:13:19last night,
00:13:20so as the morning progresses
00:13:22into the small hours,
00:13:252, 3, 4 o'clock in the morning,
00:13:27we may well see quite a lot of mist
00:13:29around the track,
00:13:30and that often hovers
00:13:31around the trees on the straight,
00:13:33of course you've also got
00:13:33the River Sartre not too far away,
00:13:35after which the circuit is named,
00:13:37and that tends to produce
00:13:38its own little microclimate as well,
00:13:40so not unusual,
00:13:42even on a dry race,
00:13:44to see quite a lot of misty,
00:13:46early morning,
00:13:48and so that's something
00:13:48that will blunt the pace
00:13:50of the drivers a little bit,
00:13:51Chris Parsons.
00:13:52Oh, you're saying not unusual,
00:13:54it's absolutely usual.
00:13:56That's what I'm saying,
00:13:57not unusual.
00:13:58That's just a more Tom Jones line.
00:14:01You can't have a hit
00:14:02with it's absolutely usual.
00:14:04It just doesn't work.
00:14:06No, but the mist
00:14:08has always been a problem
00:14:10when you have a dry race here,
00:14:13unless it's very hot,
00:14:15which it certainly isn't this year.
00:14:19No, it isn't,
00:14:20and it has rained,
00:14:21I think every single day
00:14:23since we've come here,
00:14:24Jeremy,
00:14:24we came down on Monday.
00:14:25It has rained either
00:14:26every day or every night,
00:14:27more often overnight every night,
00:14:30but it has rained.
00:14:31I have to say,
00:14:31any fans that travel down
00:14:32on Friday,
00:14:33blinding,
00:14:34they've had a lovely time.
00:14:35If they got their tent up
00:14:36before it started sluicing
00:14:37on Friday night,
00:14:38it's been dry since,
00:14:39so they're not doing too badly.
00:14:41Getting messages in
00:14:42from the circuit,
00:14:42by the way,
00:14:43that car 009
00:14:44is going slowly,
00:14:45that's one Barazzi
00:14:46in that second golf,
00:14:47Lola Raston,
00:14:48just saying that
00:14:49the two Lola Raston,
00:14:50seventh and eighth,
00:14:51and they're going all right.
00:14:52He has just left the pits.
00:14:54We saw him going relatively safely
00:14:57up through the Dunlop S's,
00:14:58if not particularly quickly,
00:15:00but then first time out
00:15:02in the car for three hours or more,
00:15:05and in the dark,
00:15:06I wouldn't be going
00:15:07that hell for leather either
00:15:08into the Dunlop curve.
00:15:10However,
00:15:11maybe slightly more
00:15:12than just him being cautious.
00:15:14He's done a 155 second second sector
00:15:19where the time for the
00:15:21Adrian Fernandes car
00:15:22is 79 seconds,
00:15:24so he's a minute slower,
00:15:25and he's a minute slower
00:15:27in the third sector
00:15:28like he was a minute
00:15:29and a half slow
00:15:30in the first sector,
00:15:31so just possible
00:15:32that he might be coming back in.
00:15:35I'm not sure.
00:15:36He's gone by,
00:15:38but in that case,
00:15:38that was an eight-minute outlap.
00:15:41He is going to need
00:15:42to pick up that pace
00:15:43or he'll be called in
00:15:45very quickly indeed.
00:15:47Down pit road
00:15:48comes Tom Christensen,
00:15:50our GT2 leader,
00:15:51is also,
00:15:52no,
00:15:52that's the second car in GT2,
00:15:54the 63 Corvette
00:15:55that is rumbling out already,
00:15:58golly,
00:15:59and then a real hurry-up offense
00:16:01on that 63 car
00:16:02to catch up
00:16:03from that gravel trap incident
00:16:04earlier
00:16:04that separated them
00:16:05from the class leader,
00:16:07their teammates,
00:16:08by a lap
00:16:09and three quarters,
00:16:10and Tom Christensen
00:16:11comes in
00:16:12in this delayed
00:16:13number seven Audi,
00:16:15and this now
00:16:15is a relentless task
00:16:17for these guys.
00:16:18I mean,
00:16:19you have to be
00:16:19relentlessly fast
00:16:20to win a race
00:16:21from the front.
00:16:22Now,
00:16:23they've got to be
00:16:23relentlessly fast
00:16:24to try and win the race
00:16:25from fifth position,
00:16:27having been delayed
00:16:28when they were getting
00:16:29into contention,
00:16:30and now it's going back
00:16:32into the garage.
00:16:32Now,
00:16:33whether this will
00:16:34just involve
00:16:35changing a nose
00:16:36for better lights,
00:16:37different aero,
00:16:38or something like that,
00:16:39or whether there's
00:16:40slightly more going on.
00:16:43Well,
00:16:44that was that done.
00:16:45Yeah,
00:16:46it was a very strange
00:16:47move than that,
00:16:47wasn't it?
00:16:48What was it?
00:16:49I don't know,
00:16:50I think it was
00:16:50a change of mind.
00:16:51Yes.
00:16:54This is a very
00:16:55un-Audi-style pit stop.
00:16:57Let's get it in,
00:16:58let's not get it in,
00:16:59let's get some tyres on,
00:17:00let's not get some tyres on,
00:17:02oh,
00:17:02while we're at it,
00:17:03have a drink.
00:17:05And have they even
00:17:06finished refuelling it yet?
00:17:08Uh,
00:17:09I think they've finished
00:17:10refuelling it,
00:17:11but...
00:17:11Yes,
00:17:11because they wouldn't have
00:17:12moved it back in
00:17:13before they had,
00:17:13however...
00:17:14The decision had been,
00:17:15right,
00:17:15refuelling it,
00:17:16and let's take it in there
00:17:17because we want to
00:17:17fiddle with it.
00:17:19That sounds like...
00:17:19No need to.
00:17:20That sounds like
00:17:20a slightly missed
00:17:21communication.
00:17:22Meanwhile,
00:17:23at the other end
00:17:23of the pit lane,
00:17:24Leutte Duval
00:17:24in the number 4
00:17:25Orica Peugeot,
00:17:27despite its very
00:17:28different colour scheme,
00:17:29it is exactly the same car
00:17:30as the number 2
00:17:32and number 1
00:17:33remaining factory Peugeots,
00:17:35the cars from the
00:17:36team Peugeot Total,
00:17:39as opposed to
00:17:40Peugeot Sport Total
00:17:41line-up,
00:17:42which was the
00:17:43number 3 car
00:17:44which has since
00:17:44gone down the Swanee.
00:17:45He's been pushing
00:17:46very hard, actually,
00:17:48Duval,
00:17:48I know we've watched him
00:17:49over the last
00:17:49sort of few laps
00:17:50so he's been going
00:17:51very quickly.
00:17:52Yes, yes, yes.
00:17:53He wants to win the race.
00:17:54Yeah.
00:17:54Admittedly, the other
00:17:55Peugeot wants to win the race,
00:17:56but I slightly think
00:17:58that there's even more
00:18:00get-up-and-go
00:18:02in that number 4 team,
00:18:04the Orica team,
00:18:05perhaps even than
00:18:05the current race leaders
00:18:06who lost out last year
00:18:09because of a late problem
00:18:11with the car
00:18:12and just, well,
00:18:14felt that the win
00:18:15was taken away from them,
00:18:16but that so often happens
00:18:19here that a car
00:18:19that looks like
00:18:20it could have,
00:18:20should have
00:18:21ends up not
00:18:22with the victory.
00:18:23And again, look,
00:18:24you can see the hazy
00:18:25kind of glow
00:18:26over the circuit
00:18:27at the moment,
00:18:28so we are starting
00:18:28to get a little bit
00:18:29of misting already
00:18:30creeping into the circuit.
00:18:33We were saying,
00:18:33actually, earlier on,
00:18:34that the period
00:18:36sort of around
00:18:37about 12,
00:18:371 o'clock,
00:18:38that's when you get
00:18:39really quick times,
00:18:40and then as we come
00:18:43or creep up
00:18:43towards the dawn,
00:18:45that's when you get
00:18:45a little bit of mist,
00:18:46that's when the actual
00:18:47distinction between
00:18:48the kerb and the track
00:18:50begins to fuzz a little bit
00:18:52and that's when you
00:18:52can make a mistake
00:18:53and the net result
00:18:54of that is you
00:18:54break the suspension.
00:18:56I don't know what's
00:18:56happened to that
00:18:57Lola Aston
00:18:59because, well,
00:19:00Ambarats's times
00:19:02are getting better
00:19:03but they're nowhere
00:19:05like what they should be.
00:19:07No.
00:19:07The first lap he did
00:19:09a 78 second first sector,
00:19:12he's now got down
00:19:13to a 48 second first sector
00:19:15but Adrian Fernandes,
00:19:17admittedly a quicker driver
00:19:18and admittedly
00:19:19not just into the car,
00:19:21still 14 seconds quicker
00:19:23on the first sector
00:19:24which goes from
00:19:26the start line
00:19:27to, I believe,
00:19:30between the first,
00:19:31between Tertrouge
00:19:32and the first chicane.
00:19:34So it's quite a long
00:19:35first sector,
00:19:3634 seconds,
00:19:37because that gets you
00:19:38all the way through
00:19:38the S's and out
00:19:39to Tertrouge at least.
00:19:40So, yeah,
00:19:42he's given away
00:19:42a lot of time still.
00:19:43He will need to get
00:19:45himself up to pace.
00:19:46We were curious
00:19:47to see if he'd got
00:19:48all the gears
00:19:49that he'd started out with.
00:19:51Well, he's probably
00:19:52got all the ones
00:19:52that the car came in with
00:19:53unless he's mangled
00:19:54his on the way out
00:19:55and I wouldn't want
00:19:56to warrant that
00:19:57accusation at him.
00:19:58Second in GT1
00:19:59in pit lane,
00:20:01the C73 Corvette,
00:20:03Alphonse Aventure
00:20:04is the team,
00:20:04Julian Juice
00:20:05is the driver.
00:20:06He was in last time
00:20:07so fuel only
00:20:08and Jeremy Shaw
00:20:10sitting next to me
00:20:11with your pad.
00:20:13Maybe we'll just
00:20:14interestingly see
00:20:15whether he's going
00:20:16to triple stint
00:20:17those tyres.
00:20:18That 73 car
00:20:19on Michelin rubber,
00:20:22is it?
00:20:23No, Dunlop rubber
00:20:24on that car
00:20:25and the class leader
00:20:28in GT1,
00:20:32the Saleen,
00:20:33which for some reason
00:20:34I don't seem to be on
00:20:35those.
00:20:35He's on Michelin tyres,
00:20:36the Saleen.
00:20:37Now then,
00:20:38Danny Watts
00:20:39has finally been
00:20:40persuaded,
00:20:41stroke cajoled,
00:20:42stroke begged
00:20:43to get out of the car
00:20:44because it does seem
00:20:45he's been in quite a long time
00:20:46in that LMP2 leading car.
00:20:48The Acura HPD
00:20:49is swapping drivers.
00:20:52So that car
00:20:54coming in
00:20:55at the head
00:20:56of the LMP2 field,
00:20:58Nick Leventus,
00:20:59Danny Watts
00:20:59and Johnny Kane,
00:21:01the three drivers.
00:21:02And I slightly imagine
00:21:04that perhaps they might
00:21:06park Nick Leventus
00:21:07overnight
00:21:07and allow the
00:21:09quick young guys
00:21:10that he's hired
00:21:10to join the team
00:21:11to get out
00:21:12and do what it is
00:21:13that they've been
00:21:13hired to do,
00:21:14which is drive the wheels
00:21:15off the thing
00:21:16and try and win
00:21:17their class.
00:21:19And at the moment
00:21:20they seem to be having
00:21:21just a better rub
00:21:23of luck
00:21:24than their direct rivals,
00:21:26the Highcroft team
00:21:26in the other HPD
00:21:27chassis
00:21:28because the Highcroft team
00:21:30are now three laps
00:21:31behind after a number
00:21:32of delays
00:21:33and whatever seems
00:21:35to have happened
00:21:35to Strachan.
00:21:35They have had incidents,
00:21:36they've been off
00:21:37and they've been
00:21:38held up by safety cars.
00:21:40Again,
00:21:40it's all back down
00:21:41to lady luck.
00:21:42You can't win this race
00:21:43without luck.
00:21:44You can't win it
00:21:45without a good car,
00:21:46good team,
00:21:46good drivers
00:21:47and good preparation.
00:21:48But if you don't have
00:21:49luck on the team,
00:21:50it's not coming your way.
00:21:53So he heads back out
00:21:55onto track.
00:21:57Is it still Davidson
00:21:58at the wheel
00:21:59of number one?
00:22:01It is indeed.
00:22:02Yes, because he's
00:22:03suddenly decided
00:22:04that he wants
00:22:05to go a little bit.
00:22:06I don't think
00:22:06he's suddenly decided
00:22:07at all,
00:22:07but he has got
00:22:08a particularly free lap,
00:22:10a 3 minutes 21.9.
00:22:12Now the fastest
00:22:12we've seen from him
00:22:13recently,
00:22:14a 3.21.6,
00:22:16but that is
00:22:17very quick race pace
00:22:18indeed.
00:22:20So Anthony Davidson,
00:22:21light on Christensen,
00:22:22desperate to make up
00:22:23for that mistake
00:22:24because don't forget
00:22:24for that delay,
00:22:26don't forget
00:22:26when the number one car
00:22:27was dragged back
00:22:28into the garage
00:22:28losing charge.
00:22:30It was our race leader
00:22:31and it was pulling away
00:22:33quickly from its
00:22:35Peugeot rivals
00:22:36behind it.
00:22:37So they feel
00:22:38that this race
00:22:39owes them something special.
00:22:40Now after losing
00:22:41the art car,
00:22:42more heartache
00:22:44for the schnitzer mechanics.
00:22:45It's been a very long
00:22:46six months
00:22:47to get the car here.
00:22:49One of three
00:22:49parallel programs
00:22:51they're running.
00:22:52A whole host
00:22:52of cars they've built.
00:22:54They're not using
00:22:54the same car
00:22:55and just changing bits.
00:22:56They're all different cars
00:22:58and after the 79 car
00:23:00has retired
00:23:01with as yet,
00:23:02or at least two hours
00:23:03ago when I asked,
00:23:03as yet undiagnosed
00:23:05problems
00:23:06because the car
00:23:06hadn't come back,
00:23:07now looks like
00:23:08they've got a loose
00:23:09left front
00:23:10or the problem
00:23:11with the left front
00:23:12brakes on car number 78
00:23:13which is a shame
00:23:14because actually
00:23:14that had been going
00:23:15relatively quickly
00:23:17and was 1, 2,
00:23:183, 4, 5, 6, 7th
00:23:20in the GT2 class
00:23:22and starting to try
00:23:24and move up
00:23:25the order a little.
00:23:28Andre Lotter
00:23:29on pit road,
00:23:30Audi number 8
00:23:31and a very quick
00:23:34first sector for him.
00:23:35Fastest of that
00:23:36entire car's,
00:23:38of that car's
00:23:38entire race.
00:23:40One of the quickest
00:23:41laps it's turned,
00:23:42a 3.32 in lap.
00:23:45That's pretty quick.
00:23:47He was very quick
00:23:48in the first sector,
00:23:49the quickest of all,
00:23:50all within 2 tenths
00:23:51of that car's
00:23:52quickest lap
00:23:52in the second sector
00:23:54and then came
00:23:55into the pits.
00:23:56So obviously
00:23:56light fuel guys
00:23:58but still
00:23:59you've got to
00:24:00use it.
00:24:01You can give me
00:24:02an Audi
00:24:02with one tank
00:24:03worth of fuel
00:24:03and I won't be
00:24:04doing 320 anythings.
00:24:06No,
00:24:06these guys
00:24:08are very quick
00:24:09indeed.
00:24:13Well Lotter
00:24:13back out
00:24:14and matching
00:24:15the team's pace
00:24:17in the pit stop
00:24:18with his acceleration
00:24:20out of the pit lane
00:24:20because there were
00:24:21two cars coming up
00:24:22fast behind them.
00:24:23They can't even
00:24:24identify them,
00:24:25can't even spot them
00:24:26in that shot
00:24:26so one of them
00:24:28was a prototype
00:24:29so I'm not sure
00:24:29if it was a P1
00:24:30or a P2 car
00:24:31but Lotter
00:24:32certainly left it
00:24:33for dead
00:24:33squirting out
00:24:35of the pit lane.
00:24:36coming towards us
00:24:39looks like
00:24:40our GT2 leader
00:24:42yeah
00:24:42in fact that's
00:24:45just a gamble
00:24:45isn't it
00:24:46there's one of
00:24:46two Corvettes
00:24:47could be
00:24:47Manu Collard
00:24:48the leader
00:24:49or Antonio Garcia
00:24:50in second place
00:24:51the one light
00:24:51on the side
00:24:52tells me that I
00:24:53gamble correctly
00:24:54it is our
00:24:55GT2 class leader
00:24:57and we're used
00:24:58to seeing Corvette
00:24:59running reliably
00:25:01fast, strong
00:25:02without too many
00:25:03dramas at the
00:25:04front of the field
00:25:04in the GT1 class
00:25:06they were beaten
00:25:07a couple of years
00:25:08by Aston Martin
00:25:09but they have been
00:25:10very much the team
00:25:12that set the benchmark
00:25:13to which others
00:25:14aspired
00:25:14including Aston Martin
00:25:15in GT1
00:25:16and so they now
00:25:18seem to be
00:25:19in benchmark position
00:25:21in GT2
00:25:22they had a really
00:25:22good battle
00:25:23with the Risi
00:25:23Competizione Ferrari
00:25:24early on
00:25:25they've been battling
00:25:26with the Porsches
00:25:27as well
00:25:28but seem to have
00:25:28left them behind
00:25:29and now it is
00:25:30really whether or not
00:25:31the Corvettes
00:25:32can get to the end
00:25:331 and 2
00:25:33or whether fate
00:25:34will intervene
00:25:35and it is
00:25:38a brake problem
00:25:39they've got the
00:25:39brake caliper
00:25:40separators in the
00:25:41front of the car
00:25:42it's only front
00:25:43left
00:25:43which slightly
00:25:45worries me
00:25:46if I was having
00:25:47one set of brake
00:25:48pads changed
00:25:48on a road car
00:25:49I'd want both
00:25:50sets changed
00:25:50so they're
00:25:52obviously still
00:25:52working with a
00:25:53pedal pressure
00:25:54problem on this
00:25:54car
00:25:55they seem to be
00:25:58screwing it back
00:25:59together
00:25:59so they
00:26:00obviously think
00:26:01they know
00:26:02what's up
00:26:02with it
00:26:03I'm sure they
00:26:04think they do
00:26:05know what's up
00:26:05with it
00:26:05but the
00:26:06mechanic inside
00:26:07looked to me
00:26:08a little bit
00:26:09as though it
00:26:09might have been
00:26:09down in the
00:26:10footbox
00:26:10or maybe
00:26:11adjusting
00:26:12something on
00:26:13the brake
00:26:13balance bar
00:26:14so clearly
00:26:15the driver
00:26:15of that Porsche
00:26:16Augusto
00:26:16Farfus
00:26:17not really
00:26:19happy with the
00:26:19way it was
00:26:20stopping
00:26:20or very
00:26:21probably
00:26:22wasn't
00:26:23car number
00:26:2412 on pit
00:26:25road
00:26:25again
00:26:26with the
00:26:27scars of
00:26:28battle
00:26:28on the
00:26:28number 12
00:26:29car
00:26:29the rebellion
00:26:29has got
00:26:30tank tape
00:26:31holding bits
00:26:32on
00:26:32it's had
00:26:33its fair
00:26:33share of
00:26:34in and outs
00:26:34of the pits
00:26:35and coming
00:26:37in now
00:26:37which of the
00:26:39Ginnettas
00:26:39are we expecting
00:26:40was that the
00:26:41Kiefel pit
00:26:41this is Giancarlo
00:26:43Fisichella's
00:26:44first pit stop
00:26:45for Ferrari
00:26:46there's a sentence
00:26:48you don't get to
00:26:48say very often
00:26:49is it
00:26:50and this is not
00:26:51going to be a
00:26:52four second
00:26:52tyre change
00:26:53is it
00:26:54this is a
00:26:54very much
00:26:55slower progress
00:26:55here
00:26:56they seem to
00:26:57have a second
00:26:58air gun man
00:26:58over the line
00:26:59there they need
00:27:00to be very
00:27:00careful about
00:27:01that
00:27:01oh and into
00:27:03the garage
00:27:03goes Uga
00:27:04Shonag's
00:27:04number six
00:27:05car
00:27:05Didier Andre
00:27:06only took it
00:27:06over about
00:27:07three laps
00:27:07and go
00:27:08it's back
00:27:08in
00:27:09sneaked in
00:27:09under the
00:27:10radar
00:27:10pushed straight
00:27:11back in
00:27:11as Fisichella
00:27:12is down
00:27:13and gone
00:27:13there he goes
00:27:15up the hill
00:27:15round the corner
00:27:16can he do it
00:27:17yes he can
00:27:17008 is in
00:27:18for service
00:27:19as well
00:27:19busy time
00:27:20in the pit lane
00:27:21so we'll take
00:27:23a quick commercial
00:27:24break and let
00:27:24you all get
00:27:24your breath
00:27:25we'll be back
00:27:25with more from
00:27:26Le Mans
00:27:26in just a second
00:27:27wake up
00:27:33stop
00:27:34don't go to
00:27:34sleep yet
00:27:35you can't
00:27:36it's still
00:27:3712 hours and
00:27:3716 minutes to
00:27:38go
00:27:38at Le Mans
00:27:39we have got a
00:27:40lot more racing
00:27:41to get through
00:27:41before you're
00:27:42allowed to go
00:27:42to bed
00:27:43I don't care
00:27:44if you want to
00:27:44slumber on the
00:27:45sofa
00:27:45just man up a
00:27:46bit and stay
00:27:47with us
00:27:47live coverage
00:27:48continues on
00:27:49Eurosport
00:27:49Martin Haven
00:27:50Chris Parsons
00:27:50Neville Hay
00:27:51watching the
00:27:52action
00:27:52and we seem
00:27:54to be in
00:27:54one of those
00:27:55periodic pit lane
00:27:56flurries where
00:27:57every man and
00:27:58his dog is
00:27:59coming in
00:27:59with problems
00:28:01rapid disassembly
00:28:02of almost the
00:28:03entire front end
00:28:04of Gary
00:28:05Challenden's
00:28:05number 41
00:28:07Ginetta Zajtek
00:28:08in the LMP2
00:28:09class
00:28:10and the corporate
00:28:11guests have
00:28:12clearly quaffed
00:28:12enough champagne
00:28:13is there such
00:28:14a thing
00:28:14there's enough
00:28:15champagne
00:28:15no
00:28:16no
00:28:16can't be
00:28:18actually I
00:28:19don't like
00:28:19champagne
00:28:19it gives me
00:28:20a headache
00:28:20so I'm the
00:28:21wrong person
00:28:22to ask about
00:28:22that
00:28:22no this I
00:28:23thought was
00:28:24a brake
00:28:24problem
00:28:24but I'm
00:28:27not so sure
00:28:28now
00:28:28I think they're
00:28:30not so sure
00:28:30now either
00:28:31putting an
00:28:31entire new
00:28:32nose on
00:28:32so well we
00:28:33did see it
00:28:34nosed off into
00:28:35the barriers
00:28:35didn't we
00:28:35I think this
00:28:36is one of
00:28:37those things
00:28:37where the
00:28:38jobless
00:28:38reached critical
00:28:39mass
00:28:39he came in
00:28:41and they
00:28:41kidnapped him
00:28:43stuck him
00:28:43in the garage
00:28:44and said
00:28:44right we're
00:28:45now going
00:28:45to change
00:28:46all the
00:28:46things that
00:28:47everyone has
00:28:47broken in
00:28:48the last six
00:28:49hours and
00:28:50that may well
00:28:50be exactly
00:28:51what's going
00:28:52on with the
00:28:53DV8 on to
00:28:53the car as
00:28:54well
00:28:542,000 mile
00:28:55service
00:28:56that's a good
00:28:57example of why
00:28:58you put the
00:28:58car in the
00:28:59garage because
00:29:00you can get
00:29:00any number of
00:29:02mechanics working
00:29:02on it
00:29:03and you don't
00:29:04get Nick
00:29:04Damon from
00:29:05Radio Le Mans
00:29:06in the way
00:29:06there yet
00:29:06thanks Nick
00:29:07we're going
00:29:10to get a
00:29:10different way
00:29:10on that car
00:29:11number 60
00:29:12oh yes it
00:29:13is car
00:29:13number 60
00:29:14this is the
00:29:15remaining
00:29:15Maytec
00:29:16competition
00:29:16Ford
00:29:17Thomas Mutch
00:29:18Romain Grosjean
00:29:19and Jonathan
00:29:20Hershey
00:29:20lying third
00:29:22in GT1
00:29:23despite their
00:29:24delays
00:29:25Romain Grosjean
00:29:25of course
00:29:26crashed this
00:29:27car early
00:29:28in practice
00:29:29and did a lot
00:29:31of damage
00:29:31in free practice
00:29:32but it didn't
00:29:33affect them
00:29:33too much
00:29:34in qualifying
00:29:35actually it's
00:29:35been running
00:29:36very quickly
00:29:37one major
00:29:38delay
00:29:38and unfortunately
00:29:40that has
00:29:40dropped them
00:29:40what did we
00:29:42say it was
00:29:43oh I'm losing
00:29:43track of GT2
00:29:44now leaders
00:29:45on 161 laps
00:29:46they're on 152
00:29:48do the sums
00:29:49yourself I make
00:29:49it nine laps
00:29:50could be anything
00:29:51between 0 and 20
00:29:52frankly but there
00:29:53are nine laps
00:29:53behind but still
00:29:55it seems that they
00:29:56are running very
00:29:57quickly and enough
00:29:58to keep them in
00:29:59front of Jerome
00:30:00Polycar who's three
00:30:01laps behind them
00:30:02in the second
00:30:03Alphand
00:30:04Aventure Corvette
00:30:06the Aston Martin
00:30:08junior driver's
00:30:08Aston Martin
00:30:09a further lap
00:30:10back is in
00:30:11fifth place
00:30:11in GT1
00:30:13with now
00:30:14the young
00:30:14driver in it
00:30:15Christopher
00:30:16Nygaard
00:30:17and the remaining
00:30:19GT1 car
00:30:20one two
00:30:21three four
00:30:21five
00:30:22sixth in class
00:30:23and still going
00:30:24and still on
00:30:25page through
00:30:25the timing screen
00:30:26so visible
00:30:27is well
00:30:28not still going
00:30:29actually
00:30:30is the Lamborghini
00:30:31the Japanese
00:30:32Lamborghini
00:30:33owners club
00:30:33the J-Lock
00:30:34Lamborghini
00:30:35Murcielago
00:30:36at Sushi Yoga
00:30:37I'm guessing
00:30:38no longer
00:30:39still at the
00:30:40wheel because
00:30:40it must have
00:30:41been stationed
00:30:41in the pits
00:30:42for well over
00:30:42an hour
00:30:43and I'm assuming
00:30:44that at some
00:30:44states the
00:30:45Japanese will
00:30:46get round to
00:30:46announcing that
00:30:47it is retired
00:30:47it certainly
00:30:48ain't going
00:30:49round very
00:30:49much
00:30:50we got the
00:30:51Stratka car
00:30:52completely wrong
00:30:53because in fact
00:30:54it is Nick
00:30:55Leventis who's
00:30:56got into the
00:30:57car this time
00:30:59of night
00:30:59we thought he'd
00:31:00stay out
00:31:01but no
00:31:02Nick has
00:31:02taken the
00:31:03car over
00:31:04well in
00:31:05fairness we
00:31:05didn't think
00:31:06that was just
00:31:06me suggesting
00:31:07it so he's
00:31:08obviously intent
00:31:09on doing his
00:31:10fair share
00:31:11good for him
00:31:12yeah absolutely
00:31:13and in fact
00:31:14first sector
00:31:15time 39.2
00:31:16that's three
00:31:17seconds off
00:31:18Pierre Ragg
00:31:18in the 008
00:31:19Aston so that's
00:31:20not too bad
00:31:21and he will
00:31:23I'm sure take
00:31:24a lap or two
00:31:24really to get
00:31:25his head around
00:31:26full night here
00:31:28at Le Mans
00:31:28and the speed
00:31:29and the other
00:31:30cars and
00:31:30everything else
00:31:31meanwhile at
00:31:32the 15
00:31:35yes it's the
00:31:36car is Audi
00:31:36it took me a
00:31:37while to
00:31:37recognise
00:31:38it was an
00:31:39R10
00:31:39actually it
00:31:41is an R10
00:31:42Audi
00:31:42yeah he's
00:31:43having a
00:31:43thousand mile
00:31:43service isn't
00:31:44he
00:31:44well we saw
00:31:45this so often
00:31:46with Audi
00:31:46didn't we
00:31:47ok we need a
00:31:48bit of a change
00:31:48of downforce
00:31:49because we're
00:31:49now getting
00:31:49a little bit
00:31:50quicker because
00:31:50it's cooler
00:31:51right stick the
00:31:52extra downforce
00:31:53bit more
00:31:54one nose on
00:31:55which downforce
00:31:56nose you want
00:31:57we want downforce
00:31:57nose three
00:31:58please thank you
00:31:58very much
00:31:59and it's quicker
00:32:00than fiddling around
00:32:01trying to go
00:32:02oh are you going
00:32:03two clicks up on
00:32:04your wing
00:32:04yes me too
00:32:05so halfway through
00:32:09the race barring
00:32:10eleven minutes
00:32:11we've got twelve
00:32:12hours and eleven
00:32:12just under twelve
00:32:13hours and twelve
00:32:14minutes to go
00:32:15so the race is
00:32:17still very much in
00:32:18its infancy
00:32:19nev and
00:32:20yes it's curious
00:32:22isn't it
00:32:22you tend to get
00:32:23a little hiatus
00:32:24here now where
00:32:25not an awful
00:32:26of very
00:32:27an awful lot of
00:32:28very noticeable
00:32:29things happen
00:32:29until it starts
00:32:31to become daylight
00:32:31and then suddenly
00:32:32everybody gets
00:32:33their second wind
00:32:33five o'clock in
00:32:34the morning
00:32:35is when it all
00:32:36starts to happen
00:32:36as soon as the
00:32:37sun comes up
00:32:37yeah they crash
00:32:38and bits fall off
00:32:39and all sorts of
00:32:40nonsense
00:32:40it's quite curious
00:32:41isn't it
00:32:41you know you get
00:32:42long or twenty
00:32:42five hours
00:32:43off they go
00:32:44two three hours
00:32:45viewing some cars
00:32:46then it slows down
00:32:48you have lots of
00:32:48little things going
00:32:49wrong you know
00:32:50still oh those
00:32:51can't go
00:32:51oh tar goes
00:32:52all this sort of
00:32:53thing
00:32:53get to half way
00:32:54and as you say
00:32:56it's quite quiet
00:32:56three o'clock
00:32:57four o'clock
00:32:58then suddenly
00:32:59about five
00:33:00six o'clock
00:33:00it all starts to
00:33:01happen
00:33:01yeah and there's
00:33:03no logical reason
00:33:04why it should
00:33:05do it
00:33:06every year it's
00:33:07exactly the same
00:33:07body clocks
00:33:08is it that
00:33:09because I'm not a
00:33:10morning person
00:33:10I have to
00:33:11honestly admit
00:33:11I'm a night
00:33:12person
00:33:12I hate getting
00:33:13up early in the
00:33:13morning
00:33:13well one of the
00:33:14things that
00:33:14happens obviously
00:33:15is as the
00:33:15visibility starts
00:33:17to rise a
00:33:18little but
00:33:18the temperature
00:33:19is still
00:33:19relatively low
00:33:20drivers can push
00:33:22even faster than
00:33:23they can perhaps
00:33:24in the darkest
00:33:25part of the night
00:33:26plus also you
00:33:27then get the
00:33:28fatigue enhanced
00:33:30by a bit of
00:33:31extra sunlight
00:33:32that seems to do
00:33:33something it gives
00:33:34you the sleepy
00:33:35eyes and just a
00:33:37little bit more
00:33:38sloth and then
00:33:39of course you
00:33:41know the cars
00:33:41by that stage
00:33:42have been going
00:33:42for 17-18 hours
00:33:44and so bits
00:33:46that haven't
00:33:46fallen off in
00:33:4717 or 18
00:33:48minutes are
00:33:49looking considerably
00:33:50more prone to
00:33:51fall off
00:33:51oh that's
00:33:52certainly true
00:33:53is it me or
00:33:54has that car
00:33:54now done a
00:33:55complete stint
00:33:56between
00:33:56oh don't say
00:33:58things like that
00:33:59we quite like
00:34:00them
00:34:00no yes of
00:34:02course
00:34:02oh dear
00:34:02there you go
00:34:03there you go
00:34:03there you've just
00:34:04opened your mouth
00:34:05again and more
00:34:06trouble
00:34:06there's the second
00:34:07place car
00:34:08also coming
00:34:09into the garage
00:34:09what did you
00:34:13just say
00:34:14well there you
00:34:15go
00:34:16if you chance
00:34:18of listening
00:34:19you know sort
00:34:19of demon barber
00:34:21and all the rest
00:34:21of it it's not
00:34:22dull here you are
00:34:23missing something
00:34:23you should have
00:34:24come
00:34:24generally speaking
00:34:29you'll find it
00:34:29wasn't the tv
00:34:30crews that broke
00:34:31your car
00:34:32it's not the tv
00:34:33cars that designed
00:34:35the other people's
00:34:36cars so there's
00:34:36nothing much we
00:34:37can do by showing
00:34:38your car being
00:34:39fixed that will
00:34:40either help you
00:34:41fix it or help
00:34:42your rivals take
00:34:43advantage of it
00:34:44it's broken get
00:34:45on with it
00:34:46well let us see
00:34:48what you're doing
00:34:48or don't come at
00:34:50all
00:34:50i maintain this
00:34:51commentator's
00:34:52cursed it's this
00:34:53one this chris here
00:34:54who's doing it
00:34:55yeah well and the
00:34:56phone mr parsnip
00:34:56has done for paul
00:34:58lord drayson so i
00:34:59shall tell him that
00:35:00well and then
00:35:00bangers you're
00:35:01obe
00:35:02yeah you're that's
00:35:03it
00:35:03oh well never mind
00:35:04i won't get a
00:35:06french one either
00:35:06i killed off
00:35:09oh yes well
00:35:10you might have
00:35:10a car as well
00:35:12now number two
00:35:12so lead pair of
00:35:14cars are on pit
00:35:14road luckily that
00:35:16one's not been
00:35:16shuffled back into
00:35:17the garage that
00:35:17would have been far
00:35:18too much synchronicity
00:35:19for any sane
00:35:21norm
00:35:22uh
00:35:24what's the word i'm
00:35:25looking for
00:35:26conspiracy theorist
00:35:27thank you
00:35:27the team here
00:35:29having uh
00:35:30we put the curse
00:35:32on all of them
00:35:33right don't talk
00:35:34at all about anyone
00:35:34we like
00:35:35oh dear that
00:35:37narrows it right
00:35:37down
00:35:38that means i can't
00:35:39mention tom
00:35:39coronel or peter
00:35:40dunbrek or the
00:35:41spiker team
00:35:41this is tom
00:35:42coronel
00:35:43world touring car
00:35:44driver
00:35:45VLN driver
00:35:46I'll turn their mic off while Jeremy
00:35:49whispers Sotivuce to him
00:35:51and the
00:35:53Spiker in for regular service
00:35:55it's been a bit of a troublesome little piggy I'm afraid again
00:35:57this year the Spiker
00:35:58but they seem to have ironed out a few
00:36:01of its wrinkles and threatened it with a big enough
00:36:03cudgel that it is not intent
00:36:05on coming into the bits all the time
00:36:07it is however
00:36:08and I probably won't be thanked for mentioning
00:36:11this last in the field
00:36:13in 41st place
00:36:15Jeremy was saying to me that he thought
00:36:17number 4 Peugeot had been in
00:36:19before about 4 or 5 laps ago
00:36:21and I thought that
00:36:23you know we were looking at a car that was going out
00:36:26and you thought it was going very slowly
00:36:28and we both of us sort of said
00:36:29oh yeah well I think it is probably the
00:36:31I decided it must be the lower look as you said so
00:36:33I'm not so sure
00:36:35I'm not so sure that it wasn't number 4 Peugeot
00:36:37it wasn't number 4 Peugeot going slowly
00:36:39but it has been in recently
00:36:41this is its 16th pit stop
00:36:43compared to 15th for the race leader
00:36:45and for the car behind it
00:36:47Roman Dubas
00:36:48so this is an out of sequence pit stop
00:36:49but it is only its first out of sequence pit stop
00:36:52because it did not have a stop in hand over Sarazan
00:36:55so this is its first major drama
00:36:58yes but Martin you don't put the whole engine cover over the pit door
00:37:04yes you do because that's the way they do things
00:37:06because apparently major manufacturers expect to come here
00:37:10and no matter how badly they treat the media
00:37:12then be fated afterwards
00:37:14for managing to complete a race distance
00:37:16they don't want us to see
00:37:18they don't want us to see what they're doing
00:37:20they don't want Audi to find out what they've done to the nose of the car
00:37:25which is the only thing we can see
00:37:27there is actually a rule
00:37:28which says that all cars must be visible from the pit lane
00:37:32Martin
00:37:33so that the ACO can see that they're not doing something nasty
00:37:36in the cheating department
00:37:38I'm going to get rid of one of you codgers immediately
00:37:41because a very fine looking young lady
00:37:42I knew that's what you were going to say
00:37:43and I was going to volunteer straight away
00:37:45oh no this is it
00:37:46collapse of a number of star parties
00:37:48and said good looking young lady
00:37:49well come on in Fiona Miller and say hello to us
00:37:54Fiona for those of you who have not been regular Radio Le Mans listeners
00:37:57and shame on you if you haven't
00:37:59help me out a very great deal
00:38:02in my 20 years of Radio Le Mans
00:38:04by listening and then being communicative
00:38:07and I think that she ought to perhaps run PR courses
00:38:11for a very large number of the teams at the moment
00:38:13absolutely true
00:38:14Fiona hello
00:38:15very disappointed to see you here I'm afraid
00:38:18yes I know
00:38:18I'd actually much rather be down in the pit
00:38:21sort of being terribly busy with two cars
00:38:23than instead I'm half as busy with only one
00:38:25I have a task for you
00:38:27go down to the pit
00:38:28and kick a few PR people and recalcitrant mechanics
00:38:31in the shins down at the Peugeot end
00:38:33because they're not covering themselves in friends
00:38:35no
00:38:36it's certainly been a bit of a race hasn't it
00:38:38up at the front as well as down the back
00:38:40I mean there were some classic battles up at the front at the beginning
00:38:43and I think that the GT class really gave everybody
00:38:46a wonderful spectacle for the first quarter
00:38:50just it's a shame it slipped away a bit
00:38:53and our gear selection problems probably helped that enormously
00:38:57yes enormously
00:38:58just to clarify that those of you that aren't members of the media
00:39:01i.e. everyone who's listening
00:39:03Fiona is the press attache officer girl genius guru for BC Competizione
00:39:10so she's been looking after not only the car that was our LMP2 class GT2 class leader
00:39:18the red one
00:39:22the number I can't remember now
00:39:2482
00:39:2582 that's right
00:39:25that was giving us such great entertainment earlier on
00:39:30with the Corvette at the lead of the GT2 class
00:39:34but also looking after the 83 car
00:39:36which is the chrome racing green version isn't it
00:39:39that's correct yes
00:39:40both Jimmy Bruni
00:39:43well in fact all three of our drivers
00:39:45Bruni, Jamie Bello and Pierre Capper
00:39:48had some terrific scraps with the Corvette drivers
00:39:50and it was one of those really firm but fair fights
00:39:55and you know
00:39:56I'm sure the Corvette drivers will all agree
00:39:59that it was a it was a the sort of fight that you really wish you could have in every race
00:40:04absolutely
00:40:05it just made the whole thing come alive
00:40:07very much kind of master race where Laguna Seca ding ding
00:40:11gloves on round two
00:40:12because it sound it looked exactly like that one
00:40:15yeah it really was
00:40:17it was kind of like the sprint races that we have in the states
00:40:19where you have still like a two hour four to five
00:40:21all out from flag to flag
00:40:23sort of fight together
00:40:24and it was like that
00:40:26there was no reason why it couldn't have gone being like that
00:40:29and we just unfortunately had this problem
00:40:31which we've never had before
00:40:32and it's just sort of put an early halt to our attack on that
00:40:37and that's a real pain
00:40:38because I have absolutely no doubt
00:40:40the drivers of both cars
00:40:41your car and the Corvette
00:40:42would have got out after their seats going
00:40:44god that was fun
00:40:46they did
00:40:46god that was the best racing I've had here in years
00:40:50because you go racing to race close
00:40:53and wheel to wheel with each other
00:40:55and we were watching them for a time
00:40:57our director was really enjoying it clearly
00:40:59because we were watching pass after pass after
00:41:02chicane after chicane
00:41:04they were swapping the lead
00:41:05corner after corner
00:41:06they were swapping the lead
00:41:07and that's what every team wants
00:41:08to be in that kind of a battle
00:41:10that's right
00:41:10you know notes to tell racing
00:41:12and passing is what everybody loves to see
00:41:14and not knowing what's going to happen
00:41:17from one lap to the next
00:41:18and I think that makes it hugely enjoyable
00:41:21as a team member
00:41:22but also quite obviously hugely enjoyable
00:41:25as a spectator
00:41:25well listen
00:41:26recently got this hugely enviable record
00:41:30in endurance racing
00:41:31and particularly in the long distance racing
00:41:34but also in the sprint races
00:41:35in the American Le Mans series
00:41:36it's a really strong team
00:41:38really strong engineering
00:41:39and they've got
00:41:40you know
00:41:41great kit with the Ferrari
00:41:41but great driver talent as well
00:41:43I mean
00:41:43every box that you want
00:41:46on your wish list
00:41:46has been ticked
00:41:47and that's the secret really
00:41:49there is no secret
00:41:50it's an open secret
00:41:51you buy the best of everything
00:41:52and you work the hardest
00:41:54with what you've got
00:41:55yes I mean
00:41:56I think it
00:41:57you know
00:41:57as I'm sure everybody
00:41:58every successful team
00:41:59looking down the fit lane
00:42:00would say
00:42:01the secret is the package
00:42:03and it's having everything
00:42:04that all comes together
00:42:05at the right time
00:42:06so that you have
00:42:06you know
00:42:07a proven race car
00:42:09that you know
00:42:10is going to be reliable
00:42:11and strong
00:42:11that doesn't have
00:42:14problems that occur
00:42:15again and again
00:42:16you have a very strong
00:42:17tyre package
00:42:18which we have with Michelin
00:42:19you have an excellent
00:42:21driver line up
00:42:22and I mean
00:42:22I think obviously
00:42:23really one of the best
00:42:24that there is
00:42:24in GT racing
00:42:25and you've just
00:42:28put it all together
00:42:29and the other secret
00:42:31of course
00:42:31is having a team
00:42:32that knows how to
00:42:33prepare for these races
00:42:34and Giuseppe Ricci
00:42:36is a firm believer
00:42:37that preparation
00:42:38is everything
00:42:39and that's really
00:42:40I think
00:42:40which up until now
00:42:42has given us
00:42:43this amazing run
00:42:44of six races
00:42:44in the go
00:42:45well sooner or later
00:42:47you know
00:42:47every run
00:42:48has to come to an end
00:42:49and sooner or later
00:42:50no matter how good
00:42:51your preparation
00:42:52as everybody knows
00:42:53Le Mans turns around
00:42:54and kicks you in the teeth
00:42:55then ending
00:42:56or jump to an end
00:43:07and then
00:43:07then
00:43:08and
00:43:08then
00:43:09and
00:43:09furious
00:43:09and
00:43:10and
00:43:11All right.
00:43:41It was the best way to be introduced
00:44:10Welcome back to Le Mans
00:44:14where I hope you are now hearing us
00:44:17I gather that for a while
00:44:18our interesting and informative commentary
00:44:21was rather wasted on you
00:44:23since you weren't hearing a word of it
00:44:24However, let's just very quickly
00:44:26before we get back to our guest Fiona
00:44:28from the Risa Competizione team
00:44:31let's just very quickly catch up with the car
00:44:33that is no longer second
00:44:35but is now full
00:44:36as it's being reassembled from its component parts
00:44:40which have been used to block our view of it
00:44:41something happened to that Peugeot
00:44:43and interestingly enough
00:44:44we've got no idea what it was
00:44:46Anthony Davidson remains at the wheel of the car
00:44:48that he brought in
00:44:49and was whisked in from second place
00:44:51into the garage
00:44:52as I said, it is now down to fourth place
00:44:54so Audi, from having been whipped out of sight
00:44:57in the first hour of the race
00:44:59are now lying second
00:45:00and third
00:45:02the wheels are coming off the Peugeot wagon
00:45:05relatively quickly
00:45:07Anthony Davidson is in fourth place
00:45:09Tom Christensen in fifth place
00:45:11Lloyd Duval has now slipped to sixth place
00:45:14as Anthony Davidson comes onto pit road
00:45:16he is now the second best placed Peugeot
00:45:19it wasn't Anthony Davidson
00:45:22who had the big delay
00:45:24it was in fact
00:45:25yes, yes
00:45:26Lloyd?
00:45:27Lloyd Duval
00:45:27Duval who had the big delay
00:45:29however, when he came out of the garage
00:45:30he was shown as fourth
00:45:32and took two cars shot across the line
00:45:33while he was sitting there
00:45:34so he's now gone down to sixth
00:45:36yeah
00:45:36he is however on the same lap
00:45:39oh yeah
00:45:39as, no he's not
00:45:41he's got a lap behind Davidson and Christensen
00:45:43so their recovery continues
00:45:44and Davidson who was leading
00:45:46when he had an electrical problem
00:45:48is now up to fourth
00:45:49Tom Christensen is now up to fifth
00:45:51Lloyd Duval drops from second to fourth
00:45:53to sixth rather
00:45:54and that leaves Stefan Saratan
00:45:56as, whisper it now
00:45:58with 11 hours and 56 minutes remaining
00:46:01untroubled
00:46:02the only untroubled Peugeot
00:46:04so the cast iron
00:46:06one, two, three, four result
00:46:08that looked all but a certainty
00:46:09in the opening hour
00:46:10Fiona Miller from Risi Competizione
00:46:12looks a little less
00:46:14like even a remote possibility
00:46:17it looked as though
00:46:18they were going to wipe the floor
00:46:20with Audi
00:46:20now
00:46:21it's starting to look
00:46:23furrowed brows
00:46:23clinging on
00:46:24I wonder if we've got a chance
00:46:26of still winning this
00:46:27I think that's one of the beauties
00:46:29of the 24 hours
00:46:30yeah
00:46:31I don't know
00:46:32and what seems apparent
00:46:34in the first quarter
00:46:35can change at half distance
00:46:37and change again
00:46:38three quarters of the way
00:46:39through the race
00:46:40you just
00:46:40you never know
00:46:41and also as a team
00:46:43you never give up
00:46:44because you don't know
00:46:45what's going to happen
00:46:46to your competitors
00:46:47and you can make up
00:46:48an enormous amount of ground
00:46:49over a period of 24 hours
00:46:51they look to have
00:46:52so much in hand
00:46:53over everybody else
00:46:54and even today
00:46:57we're sort of
00:46:58a lap in 319
00:46:59and nobody else
00:47:00really was able
00:47:01to get down
00:47:02under about 323
00:47:03324
00:47:04and then suddenly
00:47:06it all starts to
00:47:08unravel a little bit
00:47:10and I still can't
00:47:10quite work out why
00:47:11well they can't
00:47:13quite work out why
00:47:14and the real problem
00:47:15for them is
00:47:15it's not the same problem
00:47:17I think the reason
00:47:18it's not working out
00:47:19is they haven't got Fiona
00:47:20I think the reason
00:47:22is they're not being
00:47:23nice enough to
00:47:24a little Ferrari battle
00:47:26pay attention
00:47:27Fiona
00:47:27that's one of yours
00:47:28I am yes
00:47:29that's the
00:47:30who's in the
00:47:30crane racing car
00:47:31at the moment
00:47:31Eric van der Poel
00:47:33oh is it
00:47:33Eric van der Poel
00:47:34and that was
00:47:35the Hancock Ferrari
00:47:37yes it was
00:47:37taking
00:47:38going past
00:47:39and who is in that
00:47:41that is
00:47:41that's going
00:47:42quite nice actually
00:47:43that is Dominic
00:47:44Farnbacher
00:47:45again and he is
00:47:46fifth position
00:47:47in the GT2 class
00:47:48and actually
00:47:49he's the lead Ferrari
00:47:50so unfortunately
00:47:52he's got Giancarlo
00:47:52Fisichelli behind him
00:47:53in sixth place
00:47:54they're on the same
00:47:55lap as each other
00:47:55but a couple of Porsches
00:47:57and those two Corvettes
00:47:58in front
00:47:58and Ugde Schonak
00:48:00explaining to someone
00:48:01what ain't us
00:48:02what is going on
00:48:04with the number
00:48:04four car
00:48:05I'm very disappointed
00:48:07that I really secretly
00:48:09quite fancied
00:48:10Ugde Schonak's car
00:48:11for winning the race
00:48:12and taking glory
00:48:14for Peugeot
00:48:15and of course
00:48:16his operation
00:48:17although he's
00:48:18himself
00:48:19and the original
00:48:20Orica operation
00:48:22from Senior
00:48:22they're also based
00:48:23here at the Technopark
00:48:25at Le Mans as well
00:48:25so that would have been
00:48:26for the Le Mans fans
00:48:28second best thing
00:48:29to a Sebastian Bordet
00:48:31win I would think
00:48:32and of course
00:48:33Ugde Schonak
00:48:34famously
00:48:35almost as nice
00:48:36as Fiona as well
00:48:37so he is one of
00:48:40sports car racing's
00:48:40genuinely really nice
00:48:42guys isn't he
00:48:43he won in 1991
00:48:45with Mazda
00:48:46and he's been coming
00:48:47back on a fairly
00:48:48regular basis
00:48:49particularly in the
00:48:50last few years
00:48:51to try and do the
00:48:52same thing again
00:48:52and actually he had
00:48:53a really strong
00:48:54shot going there
00:48:55for a while
00:48:55I think this is one
00:48:57of the reasons
00:48:58why we all love
00:48:59sports car racing
00:48:59so much
00:49:00and it's got a
00:49:04very warm and
00:49:05friendly atmosphere
00:49:06in the paddocks
00:49:07and yet as soon
00:49:09as you get on the
00:49:09track it's intensely
00:49:10sort of
00:49:11it's an intensely
00:49:13fierce battle
00:49:14and I think that's
00:49:15that satisfies
00:49:17everybody
00:49:17I think so
00:49:18actually it's
00:49:19that exact
00:49:20sentiment was
00:49:21echoed by the
00:49:22president of the
00:49:22ACO at the
00:49:23welcoming meeting
00:49:24for the teams
00:49:25this week
00:49:26the little cocktail
00:49:27reception they had
00:49:28he said you know
00:49:29I hope that you're
00:49:30all going to be
00:49:31very fierce rivals
00:49:32on the track
00:49:33and very good
00:49:33friends in the paddock
00:49:34and actually that's
00:49:35a pretty good
00:49:36summation of what
00:49:37it is
00:49:37for me still the
00:49:38best description
00:49:39ever of Le Mans
00:49:40is it's a week
00:49:41long holiday
00:49:41with friends
00:49:42and at the race
00:49:43at the end
00:49:43they hold a motor
00:49:44race and you know
00:49:45if you can find
00:49:47a better quick
00:49:48encapsulation of Le Mans
00:49:49then I'm all for
00:49:51hearing it
00:49:51because that's still
00:49:52to me is why I
00:49:53come it is a
00:49:54holiday with friends
00:49:55who think exactly
00:49:55the same things
00:49:56and love exactly
00:49:57the same things
00:49:57and at the end
00:49:58they just happen
00:49:59to hold the
00:49:59greatest race
00:50:00there is as well
00:50:01so double bubble
00:50:02there really
00:50:02if you can find
00:50:03a team member
00:50:04who will think
00:50:05of this week
00:50:05as being a
00:50:06week long holiday
00:50:07then I wish you
00:50:07luck
00:50:08our guys have
00:50:09worked 123 hours
00:50:11so far this week
00:50:12and that is
00:50:14without any
00:50:15sort of major
00:50:15issues really
00:50:17it's a very
00:50:18very long
00:50:19hard week
00:50:19oh it is
00:50:20absolutely right
00:50:21but they wouldn't
00:50:22trade it for all
00:50:23the tea in
00:50:23China
00:50:23no
00:50:24they would
00:50:24right now
00:50:25but give them
00:50:26a week's clearance
00:50:27when they've
00:50:28forgotten all the
00:50:28pain and the
00:50:29fatigue
00:50:29absolutely right
00:50:30and actually we
00:50:31were talking
00:50:32earlier to
00:50:33to Ryle Frey
00:50:36who's Ford
00:50:36retired early
00:50:37and saying
00:50:37okay
00:50:38you've come in
00:50:39from single
00:50:39seater racing
00:50:40you've probably
00:50:41never expected
00:50:41to race in
00:50:42sports cars
00:50:43you've done a
00:50:44couple of GT
00:50:44races
00:50:45you're here at
00:50:45Le Mans
00:50:46you've not even
00:50:47got to drive the
00:50:47car in the race
00:50:48so I'm going to
00:50:49turn your back
00:50:50and walk away
00:50:50oh no
00:50:51no
00:50:51I want to
00:50:51come back
00:50:52and do
00:50:52of course you
00:50:53do
00:50:53got her
00:50:54right
00:50:54and that's
00:50:54another one
00:50:55hooked in
00:50:55well I've just
00:50:56seen Nick
00:50:56Asalo
00:50:57a couple of
00:50:58hours ago
00:50:59he's still here
00:51:00is he
00:51:00is he still
00:51:01standing
00:51:02he isn't
00:51:02any longer
00:51:03but he is still
00:51:04here
00:51:04because he said
00:51:05he was going
00:51:05didn't he
00:51:05he is
00:51:06I mean
00:51:06after their car
00:51:08unfortunately
00:51:08went out
00:51:09on Thursday
00:51:11and I really
00:51:11didn't expect
00:51:12to see him
00:51:13again after the
00:51:13weekend
00:51:14but no
00:51:15this race
00:51:17definitely hooks you
00:51:17in and once
00:51:18you're here
00:51:19it's hard
00:51:20to let go
00:51:21it is very
00:51:21hard to let
00:51:22go
00:51:22very hard
00:51:23indeed
00:51:23but let go
00:51:24I will

00:52:33behind
00:52:34third place
00:52:36is an

00:52:43Christensen
00:52:43that was
00:52:43delayed

00:53:05that's just
00:53:06come out of
00:53:06the garage
00:53:07after a long
00:53:07stop
00:53:08not quite sure
00:53:09what was up
00:53:10with
00:53:10Uglas
00:53:10Shonag's car
00:53:11we don't have a
00:53:13reporter to
00:53:14go and ask
00:53:14so I'll have to
00:53:15take ten minutes
00:53:16off to go
00:53:17downstairs
00:53:17the rabbit
00:53:17hut
00:53:18and Radio
00:53:18Le Mans
00:53:19and find
00:53:19out
00:53:19we will do
00:53:21that in a
00:53:21moment for you
00:53:22during an
00:53:22hour break
00:53:22I'll have a
00:53:23quick scamper
00:53:23down
00:53:23seventh and
00:53:24eight
00:53:24you can tune
00:53:25in yourselves
00:53:26radio
00:53:26Le Mans.com
00:53:27though I
00:53:27didn't say
00:53:28so
00:53:28seventh and
00:53:29eighth places
00:53:30are 007
00:53:31and 009
00:53:32Harold
00:53:33Primat
00:53:33and Juan
00:53:34Barazzi
00:53:34in the two
00:53:36Golf Lola
00:53:36Aston Martins
00:53:37and while we're
00:53:38having a Lola
00:53:38moment let's
00:53:39just name
00:53:40check
00:53:40Christopher
00:53:41Nygaard
00:53:43getting out
00:53:43Peter Cox
00:53:44gets in
00:53:45yeah
00:53:46yes
00:53:47is it
00:53:47Cox
00:53:48yeah
00:53:49Cox
00:53:49have not
00:53:50well okay
00:53:50not wildly
00:53:51similar helmets
00:53:52but I just
00:53:52wanted to make
00:53:53sure Cox
00:53:53is getting
00:53:54into that
00:53:54car
00:53:54it's
00:53:55fourth
00:53:57in GT1
00:53:59and
00:53:59and that's
00:54:00come back
00:54:01because it did
00:54:01have a problem
00:54:02didn't it
00:54:02earlier on
00:54:03quite early
00:54:04not a GT1
00:54:05car that
00:54:06hasn't
00:54:06actually
00:54:07interestingly
00:54:10enough
00:54:10Davidson
00:54:12seemingly
00:54:14that car
00:54:15was not
00:54:15very happy
00:54:16it seems
00:54:17to have
00:54:17recovered
00:54:17also the
00:54:18number four
00:54:18car
00:54:19has had
00:54:20its treatment
00:54:20and seems
00:54:21to have
00:54:21recovered
00:54:21because very
00:54:22briefly
00:54:23we had
00:54:24the
00:54:25Aston Martin
00:54:26up into
00:54:26sixth place
00:54:26very briefly
00:54:28yes it was
00:54:28very briefly
00:54:29and I think
00:54:30Loic Duval
00:54:31has managed
00:54:32to take that
00:54:32back
00:54:32the Lola
00:54:33Aston Martin
00:54:34apparel
00:54:34pre-map
00:54:35is only
00:54:352.8 seconds
00:54:37behind
00:54:37and the reason
00:54:38for that
00:54:39is a pit stop
00:54:40because it was
00:54:41Adrian Fernandes
00:54:42at the wheel
00:54:42of that car
00:54:42when
00:54:43Undishonag's
00:54:44car had
00:54:45its drama
00:54:45so
00:54:45yes
00:54:47Loic Duval
00:54:47back up
00:54:48into sixth
00:54:48so top
00:54:48half dozen
00:54:49are still
00:54:50three Peugeots
00:54:51and three
00:54:51Audis
00:54:51much as they
00:54:52were six
00:54:52hours ago
00:54:53and they're
00:54:53all pretty
00:54:54close actually
00:54:54the only
00:54:55difference is
00:54:55that the
00:54:56three Audis
00:54:56are now
00:54:56second
00:54:57third
00:54:57and fourth
00:54:58and not
00:54:58fourth
00:54:58fifth
00:54:58and sixth
00:54:59so it
00:55:01only takes
00:55:01one more
00:55:02hiccup
00:55:02in the
00:55:02remaining
00:55:0311 hours
00:55:03and 47
00:55:04minutes
00:55:05and suddenly
00:55:06Peugeot
00:55:06instead of
00:55:07romping
00:55:07are chasing
00:55:08two of
00:55:10two of the
00:55:10Peugeots
00:55:10the two
00:55:11of the
00:55:12three
00:55:12that remain
00:55:12are chasing
00:55:13already
00:55:14the
00:55:14Audis
00:55:15have been
00:55:15chasing
00:55:15since the
00:55:16moment
00:55:16the race
00:55:17started
00:55:17so for
00:55:18them
00:55:18it's
00:55:18situation
00:55:19normal
00:55:20I think
00:55:20we're going
00:55:21to
00:55:21it's not
00:55:22going to
00:55:22be the
00:55:22world's
00:55:23greatest
00:55:23ever
00:55:23motor
00:55:24race
00:55:24perhaps
00:55:24by the
00:55:25end
00:55:25of it
00:55:25but we
00:55:25are going
00:55:26to end
00:55:26up
00:55:26with a
00:55:26very
00:55:27entertaining
00:55:27race
00:55:28it's
00:55:28a bit
00:55:28of a
00:55:28race
00:55:29of attrition
00:55:29isn't
00:55:29it
00:55:29I mean
00:55:30it's
00:55:30the sheer
00:55:31toughness
00:55:32and that's
00:55:33a nasty
00:55:33word
00:55:34I know
00:55:34toughness
00:55:35of the
00:55:36Audis
00:55:36is still
00:55:37quite stunning
00:55:38they've
00:55:39never been
00:55:40quite quick
00:55:41enough
00:55:41but there's
00:55:42one thing
00:55:43they have
00:55:43been
00:55:43and that's
00:55:44durable
00:55:44well you can
00:55:45as has been
00:55:46proved
00:55:46a number of
00:55:47times in the
00:55:47past
00:55:47you can often
00:55:48bounce an
00:55:48Audi off
00:55:49things without
00:55:50interrupting
00:55:50its flow
00:55:51in the race
00:55:51occasionally
00:55:52you do
00:55:53bounce them
00:55:53off hard
00:55:54enough that
00:55:54they do
00:55:54stop on
00:55:55you
00:55:55step forward
00:55:56Mike
00:55:57Rockenfeller
00:55:57but generally
00:55:58they tend
00:55:59to be
00:55:59fairly resilient
00:56:00they are
00:56:00built
00:56:01very very
00:56:02strong
00:56:02because Audi
00:56:03understand
00:56:03very fully
00:56:05that this
00:56:05is a really
00:56:06really
00:56:07really
00:56:08hard thing
00:56:09to do
00:56:09drive a car
00:56:11flat out
00:56:12and I don't
00:56:13mean quite
00:56:14quickly in a
00:56:15road car manner
00:56:16as you would
00:56:16drive your
00:56:16road car
00:56:17I mean
00:56:17absolutely
00:56:19with every
00:56:20ounce of your
00:56:20fibre and
00:56:21every ounce
00:56:22that the car
00:56:22has got to
00:56:23give for
00:56:2424 hours
00:56:25without ceasing
00:56:27that is
00:56:28the devil's
00:56:29own job
00:56:29and for Audi
00:56:30to win one
00:56:31or two races
00:56:32is a commendable
00:56:33result
00:56:33to win nine
00:56:35in the last
00:56:36decade
00:56:36is absolutely
00:56:38staggering
00:56:39yeah I think
00:56:39it's the
00:56:40definition
00:56:41I think I
00:56:41mentioned this
00:56:42earlier on
00:56:43you can see
00:56:44if you look at
00:56:45the pictures
00:56:46that the
00:56:47curbs aren't
00:56:48always very high
00:56:49but they're not
00:56:50all as low
00:56:51as just around
00:56:53here just around
00:56:53going down
00:56:54through
00:56:54under the
00:56:55Unlock Bridge
00:56:55or what have
00:56:56you
00:56:56going elsewhere
00:56:57there's some
00:56:57quite high curbs
00:56:58now if you
00:56:59lack a bit of
00:57:00definition
00:57:01because it's
00:57:01dark and you
00:57:02happen to hit a
00:57:03curb a bit
00:57:04hard
00:57:04okay that
00:57:05happens
00:57:06but when it
00:57:06happens 9, 10,
00:57:0912, 19, 23
00:57:11times and it
00:57:12happens that you
00:57:13aren't driving
00:57:14an Audi
00:57:15that's when you
00:57:16get a problem
00:57:17well what happens
00:57:19a lot is here
00:57:20Nev where you
00:57:21thump that
00:57:21when you don't
00:57:22quite get on the
00:57:23brakes in time
00:57:24for the chicanes
00:57:25and you still
00:57:26turn in
00:57:26it means that
00:57:27instead of going
00:57:28on the road
00:57:29you actually go
00:57:29deeper into the
00:57:30corner and you
00:57:31go over the
00:57:32apex of the
00:57:32corner and
00:57:33that's where the
00:57:34biggest curbs on
00:57:35the circuit are
00:57:35and we saw
00:57:36quite plainly
00:57:37earlier in the
00:57:38race one of the
00:57:39rebellion cars
00:57:39being launched
00:57:40a couple of
00:57:41feet into the
00:57:42air now if
00:57:43something's doing
00:57:44100 miles an
00:57:45hour and you
00:57:46hit it hard
00:57:46enough to launch
00:57:47it two feet
00:57:48in the air
00:57:48and that's
00:57:50what's happening
00:57:50when it hits
00:57:51the curb because
00:57:51Newton says so
00:57:52the curb hits
00:57:53back just as
00:57:53hard it's being
00:57:55hit very hard
00:57:56indeed if you
00:57:56can imagine
00:57:57lifting a ton
00:57:58of car two
00:57:59feet in the
00:57:59air never mind
00:58:00the speed it's
00:58:01doing then you
00:58:02know the sort
00:58:02of force involved
00:58:03and yes if you
00:58:04hit a curb I
00:58:05mean you can
00:58:06hit it 20 times
00:58:07without doing
00:58:07any damage you
00:58:08can do it once
00:58:08and rip the
00:58:09floor out of
00:58:09the car it
00:58:10just depends
00:58:10how you hit
00:58:12it and of
00:58:12course when
00:58:13you're turning
00:58:13in late you're
00:58:14not judging how
00:58:15you hit it
00:58:16that's all in
00:58:17the hands of
00:58:17the gods
00:58:18you know it's
00:58:19just one of
00:58:20the things that
00:58:21we were talking
00:58:22and in fact I
00:58:23believe you were
00:58:23talking to
00:58:24Jackie Eakes
00:58:26in practice when
00:58:28Jackie was up
00:58:29here one of the
00:58:30great things about
00:58:30Eakes was that
00:58:31his placement of
00:58:33the car was
00:58:34such that he
00:58:35didn't hit the
00:58:36curbs and if
00:58:37you look at the
00:58:38big the great
00:58:39long distance
00:58:39drivers that's it
00:58:41they don't damage
00:58:42the car they
00:58:42take care of
00:58:43the car
00:58:44well particularly
00:58:44when Jackie
00:58:45started cars
00:58:46were very frail
00:58:47things indeed
00:58:48I mean certainly
00:58:50compared to
00:58:50nowadays and
00:58:51even at the
00:58:51highlight of his
00:58:52career 956
00:58:53960 Tuesday
00:58:54you know they
00:58:55were the epitome
00:58:57of a reliable
00:58:57race car but
00:58:58you didn't want
00:58:59to be bouncing
00:59:00them off things
00:59:00very often and
00:59:01even in those
00:59:02days it was
00:59:04still a race
00:59:04where you had to
00:59:05preserve the
00:59:06machinery now
00:59:07the machinery
00:59:07generally stands
00:59:09up to the
00:59:10caning it's
00:59:10given by the
00:59:12way the Porsche
00:59:12we just saw
00:59:13was third in
00:59:14the GT2 class
00:59:15Mark Leib
00:59:16handing over
00:59:17very swiftly
00:59:18unless I'm
00:59:18mistaken to
00:59:19Richard Leitz
00:59:20as we watch
00:59:21Anthony Davidson
00:59:22continuing on
00:59:23his way in
00:59:23fourth place
00:59:24now ahead of
00:59:25Tom Christensen
00:59:26as those two
00:59:27continue to work
00:59:28their way back
00:59:29up the order
00:59:29so that position
00:59:30is changing
00:59:31with pit stops
00:59:32Davidson back
00:59:33ahead of Audi
00:59:35number seven
00:59:35which was ahead
00:59:37of him
00:59:37just a minute
00:59:38or two ago
00:59:39because Audi
00:59:40were second
00:59:40third and
00:59:41fourth
00:59:41they're now
00:59:42second third
00:59:42and fifth
00:59:43so that is
00:59:44seesawing with
00:59:45pit stops
00:59:46they both made
00:59:4816 stops
00:59:50Christensen
00:59:5017
00:59:51so there's a
00:59:52big difference
00:59:52between them
00:59:53lead pair
00:59:54Stefan Saracen
00:59:55in Peugeot
00:59:56Andre Lotterer
00:59:57in Audi
00:59:58have made
00:59:5815 each
01:00:00have made
01:00:03I'm
01:00:03I'm
01:00:04I'm
01:00:04I'm
01:00:04I'm
01:00:05I'm
01:00:05I'm
01:00:06I'm
01:00:06I'm
