00:00:0012 laps per stint, they are managing to eke it out to 13, so yeah, that's pretty impressive.
00:00:05It's a pretty unbeatable accommodation.
00:00:07Also, generally speaking, by going a lap longer on the hot tyres, that's going to take you a few seconds as well.
00:00:15As we saw in, I think it was the second or third bits of the day,
00:00:19when by doing that extra lap it enabled Anthony Davidson to leapfrog the number two car
00:00:24and move into the lead of the race, and they haven't looked back from there.
00:00:27Yeah, that's absolutely right. It's the equivalent of having a final run on qualifying tanks, isn't it?
00:00:32Alright, the tyres may not necessarily be at their ultimate peak for those extra few kilos missing in terms of used up fuel.
00:00:39And it makes you wonder why the other two Peugeot can't push that much further on their tank,
00:00:44as they're using the same chassis, exactly the same engine, mapping as well as everything else you would assume.
00:00:51Can it really be that Buzz, Janae and Davidson are just, you know, Scottish by nature with the fuel when they come to the bus?
00:00:58I don't know.
00:00:59Anyway, let's get back down to the pit lane.
00:01:02We are going to try and get to our GT1 leader.
00:01:05Now, at the moment the GT1 leaders are just in front of the GT2 cars.
00:01:10They've been helped, actually, by the safety car, bumping them up a bit.
00:01:13It's the number 60 Maytec Ford, so I'm not going to get in a chat with Cindy Aleman.
00:01:18But, well, who could let's guess?
00:01:20Raymond Grosjean's in the car, so it won't be him.
00:01:26Thomas, everything is going quite well for the moment.
00:01:29Yes, that's right.
00:01:31We had a very good start and until now there are absolutely no issues in the moment.
00:01:36Thomas is in the car and it looks like he's feeling very well and doing very quick lap time,
00:01:41so there's nothing to complain right now.
00:01:44We are leading with a small gap already and, yeah, just hoping that everything will last
00:01:50and we can finish the pretty forwards.
00:01:53It's a hard race, it's long. How do you take some rest between your steps?
00:01:59At the moment, the beginning is always, until the night, it's difficult to cool down a little bit.
00:02:05You just go maybe somewhere in your mobile home or in the trailer where you're stuck.
00:02:09You try to calm down a little bit, you take a massage, but you cannot sleep, or I at least cannot sleep.
00:02:15I maybe can sleep at 3 a.m. in the morning, then 1, 2, 3 hours, and step by step.
00:02:21And, yeah, everybody, I think as well, the mechanics are happy when the race is dense after 3 p.m. over.
00:02:29When are you going to take your back in the car?
00:02:32Probably in half an hour.
00:02:34Okay, good luck.
00:02:36Leading at GT1, that was Thomas Much, as the graphics told you, and currently Roman Grosjean at the wheel of that car.
00:02:4521st place with a...
00:02:49King of Montre.
00:02:51Yeah, full lap lead.
00:02:53and the pit stops coming in just after the results.
00:03:00Thomas Munch makes a fairly major role in that competition, not only as a driver, but as a T-man as well.
00:03:07Now then, we are apparently now able to collar Cindy Allerman, so in a moment she will be in,
00:03:13but our leader is on pit road, Alexander Munch, receiving service in the number one Peugeot.
00:03:19So the race leader looks like no drama, fuel, and I think no driver, change driver.
00:03:24Here's Cindy Allerman.
00:03:27Cindy, we saw your car burning. What happened?
00:03:30We had a failure with the oil system, and it was very hot, and it started to burn, to get in fire.
00:03:37So Natasha had to park the car in emergency. It was not that fun.
00:03:42So, yeah, that's it. The race is over.
00:03:45I'm sure it's a big deception for you, but you're going to be back in Le Mans for sure, next year maybe?
00:03:52I hope so. Definitely, from my point of view, I want to come back because it was a great experience.
00:03:57I had much fun this week. It's a little bit of a disappointment because we were there since last Sunday,
00:04:04and finally, after six hours of race, it ended like this, you know, so it's really frustrating.
00:04:11But that's racing, and we knew it before, so hope to be back next year.
00:04:14Yeah, Le Mans is a hard race, and I think this year you learned. It's a hard race.
00:04:19I didn't understand, sorry? Yeah. Le Mans is a really hard race, and I think this year you learned it.
00:04:26Oh yeah, at least I learned the track, I learned the atmosphere, and I see the way it goes, you know, so it's really good.
00:04:32If I want to do it again next year, I will know what I'm going through.
00:04:36Thank you so much. All right, thank you. Ciao, ciao.
00:04:40Well, this race is a hard mistress, and actually, that's Cindy Alleman just kind of putting another little angle on it there,
00:04:48saying, you know, we've been up for an entire week already, we've got to drive the car once they're teaching the race,
00:04:54if that, and it's all over even before it gets to darkness, so that could be really tough.
00:05:00We're going to take a quick commercial break in a moment or two.
00:05:03We've got the action live here at Le Mans. The Audi mechanics taking a rest, and some of them have already earned it.
00:05:09Some of them may well be earning it as the evening progresses.
00:05:13Night is still a couple of hours away here in Le Mans. We'll be back.
00:05:22Welcome back live to Le Mans. We have 16.30am of the race remaining.
00:05:27It's 9.34am Central European time, 8.34am British summertime.
00:05:31I'm not quite sure how England are doing versus the USA, but on their start, it's just like a smooch or central war handling is not too bad.
00:05:41Look at this, GT2 lead battle changes.
00:05:43And once more, Jamie Maylow back in front of Oli Gavin.
00:05:47This, well, Jamie, sure, you were at Master Raceway Laguna Seca. I only have listened to it on the download from RadioLemont.com.
00:05:55But my lord, what a GT2 battle they had there. Not just for, you know, 20 minutes or half an hour, but for six hours.
00:06:03It's going on here as well. I mean, this is door handle to door handle stuff. We've still got 18 hours of this to enjoy.
00:06:09Sensational, isn't it? I mean, unfortunately, the safety car seems to mess up the battle for the lead.
00:06:13But thankfully, Alan Fester, that's the GT2, that was a great pass. Wonderful stuff, as you say, back and forth.
00:06:20It's been this way all the way through. It seems to be nothing between Oli and Ferrari.
00:06:26Are there any other cars on the lead lap? I think Magnussen is still on the lead lap.
00:06:32And Fisicale's not far behind either in fourth place. If not quite a lap down.
00:06:36He's about a minute behind Magnussen, so, you know, one pitch just over a lap down.
00:06:40So anything can change very quickly.
00:06:42In fact, he's going to drop further back because he's just come down pit road.
00:06:45Meanwhile, we're joined by a man that you know as Simon, that I've always called Simon.
00:06:49It's probably a little bit more Simon when he's here than when he's in the States.
00:06:54Whichever it is, bienvenue, monsieur Pajano. And that's where the French has to stop.
00:06:59Let's try it. I've been badly translating in other French interviews without having to try and get that one as well.
00:07:05Thank you for having me, first of all.
00:07:07First of all, delighted to see you, but really disappointed to have you up here instead of down on the track
00:07:12where we were hoping to see you until the end of the race.
00:07:14I could not agree more with you. It's a real shame.
00:07:17I mean, our 9-8 car was fantastic all weekend.
00:07:21Thanks to Sebastian Baudet, put it on 4.
00:07:23The car was brilliant.
00:07:25The 4-3 cars were working really well together.
00:07:28I really think we had a shot at it, but unfortunately we had a failure on the car that we never had in the past.
00:07:33And it's one of those, you know, you've got to take it.
00:07:37And it's obviously a very brutal, brutal thing you have on your back.
00:07:42But it's something you have to get on with it and hope for the best in the future.
00:07:48Well, listen, talking about Mazda Raceway as well, anybody who hasn't been on YouTube is missing a full lap virtuoso drive.
00:07:57You start in the back of the field, not in a Berge Oxy, but in your regular day job.
00:08:02You're in the high-crop car and drove through the field in four magnificent laps.
00:08:07What of the hell, I think we all probably agree, one of the best racing tracks there is in terms of scenery.
00:08:12How do the two cars compare, the Acura and the Berge Oxy?
00:08:17Very different concepts, very different way of driving.
00:08:20How easy is it to switch into, I suppose, diesel mode would be the best way to describe it when you come here.
00:08:26It's a good way to describe it.
00:08:28The diesel power is very different than the gasoline.
00:08:31When you touch a power on the gasoline car, you know, it's instant, you get the power straight away.
00:08:36But on the diesel engine, you touch the throttle, nothing's coming in.
00:08:40You've got a turbo as well, so there's a little bit of lag, and then all of a sudden you've got a massive amount of torque.
00:08:45You can see a smile on my face, it's a real failure, because you've got a massive amount of torque.
00:08:50And you go very fast on the straights.
00:08:52I mean, the ending of the 908 is really good as well.
00:08:55You can brake really late, but braking is probably one of the best points of the car.
00:09:00But the Acura is very nimble, very easy to drive around the Gunaseka, for example,
00:09:05because it's, the weight distribution is perfect.
00:09:09And the Porsche, you know, it's a car that has been made for the mall, so straight line speed is the most important.
00:09:14The engine is only 12, so it's a big engine with a lot of weight at the back.
00:09:18It makes it very different to drive, but I enjoy, I really enjoy both cars.
00:09:22I'll tell you what, Jeremy, we've been watching the camera shows, particularly in the car.
00:09:26I mean, everywhere it looks well-plotted, it looks quick.
00:09:29Through the Porsche curves.
00:09:31Dear Lord, it's frightening almost to watch the things.
00:09:35They are so fast, the way they change direction.
00:09:38It just looks like you are glued to the brakes.
00:09:40Is that what it feels like when you're in it?
00:09:42It does feel that way.
00:09:43I mean, you go into the first right in the Porsche curve and you're thinking,
00:09:47okay, I really have to go in and show my heart in it.
00:09:51You know, you go in six gear, slight touch on the brake,
00:09:54six gear, and you go back full power.
00:09:56The next left is flat.
00:09:58The second left is flat as well.
00:10:00Then you just lift for the long rides.
00:10:02Just lift, not right.
00:10:04It's just unbelievable.
00:10:05And the car thing is just a lift as well, not right.
00:10:08And you go through and you're not breathing because it's just unbelievable.
00:10:12The amount of G's you have on your bucket.
00:10:15Okay, honestly, how many laps do you are flat turning into the Porsche curves?
00:10:20We're not flat, we're just lifting a bit.
00:10:23I mean, we're braking a little bit.
00:10:24But honestly, we can do it all race if we want to.
00:10:27It's just a matter of being precise.
00:10:29Make sure you don't go off, you know?
00:10:31And of course, the other side of the coin there, Jeremy, is they're going so fast.
00:10:35And you are comfortably the quickest things out there.
00:10:38And there's all this slow traffic you've got to negotiate.
00:10:40So it can't be many laps, it seems like you get a clear run through the Porsche curves.
00:10:44No, anywhere.
00:10:45There are many laps.
00:10:46You get clear laps, to be honest.
00:10:48I was in practice and I only got one clear lap, I think, out of three states.
00:10:54So it's very difficult to get, you know, to learn the track, learn every corner flat out when you're trying to go flat out.
00:11:01So it's just you to adapt to any kind of situation.
00:11:05Now, you drove the Peugeot here last year, drive forward in Pascarola's team.
00:11:09A huge amount of development on the car since then.
00:11:12How does the car feel different?
00:11:14Absolutely.
00:11:15The car has improved massively.
00:11:16The Michelin tyres have improved a lot.
00:11:18The car has a lot of grip, mechanical grip that I'm talking from the tyres.
00:11:23But also the brake has improved.
00:11:25We've got less power than last year, but the engine has improved anyway,
00:11:29because the engine people have been working days and nights in Peugeot for a year.
00:11:33And the engine is just unbelievable.
00:11:35It does so much power than the straight.
00:11:37It is a great car to drive here.
00:11:39Are you surprised at the advantage you appear to have over the Audis?
00:11:42Yes, we are.
00:11:43We are very surprised.
00:11:44We thought the Audi would be a lot closer.
00:11:47We almost thought that the Audi would be quicker.
00:11:49So we were ready just in case it would be quicker.
00:11:52We had a different strategy.
00:11:53But we were quite surprised on the first team, to be honest.
00:11:56I think Audi were quite surprised when they saw what you had here from the beginning free practice.
00:12:02They were getting close to what their simulators are told would be their optimal pace.
00:12:07That's 325s.
00:12:08You guys were down in the 321s and 22s.
00:12:11Oh dear.
00:12:13They obviously went away from here last year going,
00:12:16how could we got it so wrong?
00:12:17This year they're saying exactly the same thing.
00:12:20We're going to hang on to someone for just a few more minutes
00:12:23and then you can criticize my appalling French translations.
00:12:26We're going to go down to join a man in the pit lane
00:12:29who has had very long associations with sports car racing with Le Mans
00:12:33and with a lot of other sports.
00:12:35He's raced on the Dakar and all sorts of off-road enduroes.
00:12:38And of course he's a multiple Crystal Globe winner,
00:12:40downhill skier, Luke Alphonse.
00:12:42So let's catch up with him, see what he's got to say.
00:12:45Luke, we're happy to be here.
00:12:48Happy to see you here, Luke.
00:12:51So we'll be back here.
00:12:53Happy to see you on the car.
00:12:54I've got somebody helping me down with that.
00:12:56Yeah.
00:12:57He said I'd like to be here driving as well,
00:13:00but very happy to be here with the team, of course.
00:13:02Corvettes are still on the track,
00:13:03so we've got a few problems with the car, with the engine.
00:13:07And we've got Luke not driving, of course,
00:13:10because he had a major accident last year.
00:13:13So hopefully we've still got a chance to be on the podium.
00:13:17We're first and third in the class in the GG1 category.
00:13:22So it's still 17 hours to go.
00:13:26Lots of things are going to happen.
00:13:32I'm very happy to be part of the Tableau de la Root,
00:13:39the overall show here, I think.
00:13:41So it's going to be hard to win this category.
00:13:45I think that's true of just about everything, actually.
00:13:55He said my job here is a combination of team manager.
00:13:58He's already got a team manager and mechanics and everything,
00:14:01so I guess he's the spiritual head then.
00:14:04Yeah, looking over and seeing what they're doing
00:14:16and just being here as part of the team.
00:14:20He's saying this year the performance level in GT1 has dropped.
00:14:36But still, it's difficult when you're out on the track.
00:14:41Stay out on the track.
00:14:43Are you going to be able to give many advice?
00:14:48So, yeah, trying to give them some advice.
00:14:55Okay, well, it's very hard to listen when somebody else
00:14:58is trying to translate it into English in your ear as well.
00:15:01So, Simon, finally, obviously, still 75% of the Peugeot team running
00:15:07and running first, second and third.
00:15:11We've been noticing that the number one car, though,
00:15:15has now gone from a 12-lap fuel stint onto a 13-lap fuel stint,
00:15:19and they can consistently do that,
00:15:21whereas the other two cars are like,
00:15:23oh, what were you expecting to be able to do on fueling your team?
00:15:26Were you expecting to be able to do a 12-lap fuel stint
00:15:28when they even just reached the 13?
00:15:30Well, we were able to do stint if we wanted to.
00:15:33I mean, the way it's a managing driver's piece is,
00:15:35it's very good on the shoe mileage.
00:15:38So, actually, the driver is good on the,
00:15:41with a shoe mileage as well.
00:15:43So, we knew Cadro is an excellent driver as well,
00:15:46so we knew we could do it.
00:15:48But, to be honest, I've been really surprised
00:15:51with the number one car in the pace they have.
00:15:53It's absolutely amazing to see what they're doing right here.
00:15:56It's an incredible balance, isn't it?
00:15:58To be the fastest and to go furthest on the same amount of fuel
00:16:01really requires a very distinct driving style.
00:16:06And, obviously, that's something you have to practice a lot
00:16:09in American Le Mans Series races,
00:16:11that the timing of the race is largely designed to be very difficult
00:16:15for fuel windows for everybody.
00:16:16So, you have to often get a bit of fuel saving going on.
00:16:20So, that helps with that strategy as well.
00:16:22Yes, you get to learn that in the USA with the safety cars
00:16:25and all those kind of things in America,
00:16:27which is great racing.
00:16:28I really enjoy it over there.
00:16:30You get to learn how to save two,
00:16:32how to save some other things as well as cars,
00:16:34things like that.
00:16:35So, it really helps in Le Mans.
00:16:37When you could do one more lap in Le Mans,
00:16:39it's a big lap and it's 30K.
00:16:41So, we've...
00:16:43Whoa, the loading almost went up there.
00:16:45So, you can see that Alexander is making a big gap
00:16:49because of that.
00:16:50And, you know, he's an old dog.
00:16:52He knows what he's doing.
00:16:53And, I really enjoy being his teammates
00:16:55and, you know, learning from those guys.
00:16:58Well, listen, so sorry not to be able to enjoy you
00:17:02throwing the Peugeot around here,
00:17:04as we have watched so often you in the Accura.
00:17:07Thank you very much.
00:17:08That was a big moment there, wasn't it, for Mike Rockefeller.
00:17:11He doesn't need to be feeling another Audi.
00:17:13I think he's done enough of that already.
00:17:15And, that is the battle for position not going on there,
00:17:17by the way.
00:17:18We're fourth and fifth.
00:17:19Best in class, let's say, of the Audi.
00:17:21Yeah, best in the other Ds.
00:17:23Yeah, and we're really breaking this down
00:17:24to try and make it look good for everybody,
00:17:26guys, aren't we?
00:17:27My friend is a problem going in the car.
00:17:29Yeah, you know him, do you?
00:17:31Of course, he diminished you just a little bit.
00:17:33You share, of course, the car.
00:17:34That's that same car.
00:17:35So, last year he was in the Peugeot.
00:17:48You're in the Peugeot,
00:17:49and there you are, you know,
00:17:50watching him, your normal teammate.
00:17:52Okay, listen, Cymor, thank you so much for joining us.
00:17:54Thank you for having us.
00:17:55And I hope we'll get to see a lot more of you next year as well.
00:17:59Thank you for being here.
00:18:00We're going to take, thank you very much, Cymor.
00:18:02Fantastic to have him come up here from the Peugeot, Jim.
00:18:04Going to take a quick commercial break in a minute or two.
00:18:06Actually, we need the revolving door at the back of the booth.
00:18:09We've got so many people lined up to,
00:18:11and thank you very much,
00:18:12basically, for waiting.
00:18:13We've got so many people lined up to talk to.
00:18:15He's going to take a commercial break in a moment or two.
00:18:18Just at the line, Peugeot's still one, two, three.
00:18:21Despite losing one car,
00:18:22they still have a real stranglehold on this race.
00:18:25Alexander Woods, last year's race winner with Marc Genet,
00:18:28and their new partner, Anthony Davidson,
00:18:30still leading.
00:18:31That's the fastest race in all four classes.
00:18:37Welcome back live to the moment,
00:18:38where the second place car in the MP2 category
00:18:42is just in front of a Titanic GT2 battle.
00:18:47You're looking at the red Ferrari,
00:18:49Jamie Mayer in the 82 recent competition,
00:18:52the F430 being chased by Oliver Gavine in a number 64 GM callback.
00:18:59And Woody loses in a quarter,
00:19:01and on the breaking,
00:19:02Gavin makes up on the straights.
00:19:04This battle, Jeremy Shaw,
00:19:05has just raged.
00:19:06Sensational.
00:19:07And about a minute or so,
00:19:09back into third place in the cast,
00:19:11is Ed Magnusson in the second of the Corvette.
00:19:13And he is turning laps faster than the qualified pilot in his class.
00:19:18Absolutely amazing.
00:19:19This GT2 battle,
00:19:20we knew it was going to be a feature of this event,
00:19:23and one of the cars we were hoping was going to be part of that battle,
00:19:26and he was part of the battle,
00:19:28but it was a number of people that are part of visit Porsche.
00:19:30Unfortunately, we haven't come down the race.
00:19:32Darren Lloyd was at the wheel of weapon car without Darren.
00:19:34You've been very kind of enjoying stuff,
00:19:36and you've waited an awful long time,
00:19:38and you've been so patient.
00:19:40Thanks for having me, guys.
00:19:43Yeah, it's, you know,
00:19:44it was just one of those things.
00:19:45I had a bit of lockup and slid off,
00:19:47which is normally not a big deal,
00:19:49but when I came back on the track,
00:19:51I hit the backside of a curve,
00:19:53and it hit some damage underneath the car,
00:19:55and it basically put us out.
00:19:57So, the Flying Lizard guys,
00:19:59they do such a great job,
00:20:01and, you know,
00:20:02it's just been a tough time here.
00:20:04It's been a tough time here.
00:20:05It's been a tough time here.
00:20:06It's been a tough time here.
00:20:08It's been a tough time here.
00:20:10It's been a tough time here.
00:20:11It's been a tough time here.
00:20:12It's been a tough time here.
00:20:13Two championships in American level series.
00:20:15In a row.
00:20:16Yeah, two in a row.
00:20:17And, you know,
00:20:18since I've been here,
00:20:20it is just not going to lie in the air.
00:20:22It's been an absolute thing.
00:20:23We were on the boat
00:20:24in the first year of the game in 05.
00:20:26Great racing.
00:20:27Here comes Gav.
00:20:28He's got the inside line.
00:20:30Oh, her arm arm.
00:20:31She's got the nice.
00:20:32He has a lot of fun.
00:20:33From an outside move on.
00:20:34I'm not going to lie.
00:20:35I'm not going to lie.
00:20:36I'm not going to lie.
00:20:37It's been a tough time.
00:20:38How much time do you think you've got this sensational year
00:20:40and year of the game to run us with that?
00:20:42Yeah, you know,
00:20:43I mean,
00:20:44we, at least in the U.S.
00:20:45and as well as over here,
00:20:46I mean,
00:20:47for us that is the racing GT2.
00:20:48It's the biggest class.
00:20:49There's the best in American line.
00:20:51And as you watch the TV here,
00:20:53it's just great.
00:20:54I'm happy to be here just watching here.
00:20:56If I'm not,
00:20:57It's making a big deal.
00:20:58It's just a little bit frustrating.
00:21:00You can't actually see the stupid thing.
00:21:03It's frustrating.
00:21:04It's pretty frustrating.
00:21:05It's pretty frustrating.
00:21:06And, you know,
00:21:07I'm watching times, you know,
00:21:08be it rubber being put down or whatever,
00:21:10but they're almost there.
00:21:12It's almost a second under pole.
00:21:14It's unbelievable how fast we've got to run it.
00:21:16Now,
00:21:17you got out of power about an hour or so ago.
00:21:19How were the track conditions?
00:21:21Actually,
00:21:22there were no thrill in there.
00:21:23And like I said,
00:21:24it was gaining grip.
00:21:25And, you know,
00:21:26as it falls down,
00:21:27there wasn't a ton of debris.
00:21:29You have to be careful
00:21:30when you get off line too far.
00:21:31But,
00:21:32but there was a lot of grip.
00:21:33It was good.
00:21:34Now,
00:21:35last year was your first experience here at Le Mans.
00:21:39Yeah.
00:21:40And you won the Daytona 24 hours,
00:21:41which was our headship of experience.
00:21:43Yeah.
00:21:44I'm excited about coming here.
00:21:46Yeah.
00:21:47As you know,
00:21:48I look back on it this year.
00:21:50It's,
00:21:51coming here for the first time last year.
00:21:53There's so much going on.
00:21:54And you've got driver parades.
00:21:56And so many people.
00:21:57It's just,
00:21:58it's almost too much.
00:21:59And this year,
00:22:00I was really looking forward to coming back
00:22:01because I'm in time now.
00:22:02And it was a schedule.
00:22:03I reflect on it,
00:22:05and think about it.
00:22:06So,
00:22:07it was,
00:22:08it was really enjoyable after this morning.
00:22:09Now,
00:22:10you come from a racing family.
00:22:11We'll follow you.
00:22:12It's a little more.
00:22:13You're here.
00:22:14I'm actually racing.
00:22:15And here you are kind of,
00:22:16you're fully taking a distance down.
00:22:17And you're at school.
00:22:18Yeah.
00:22:19Well,
00:22:20my dad was a mechanic for marketing.
00:22:21You know,
00:22:22I had a,
00:22:23I drove into go-karts and
00:22:25moved up more cars,
00:22:26but then I,
00:22:27I got into the sports car ranks,
00:22:28and that's,
00:22:29that's actually where we met.
00:22:30Superdore.
00:22:31You know,
00:22:32and I had stuff with the sports car stoppers,
00:22:33and so,
00:22:34it's been really good.
00:22:35What about,
00:22:36the,
00:22:37the,
00:22:38the growth of GC2,
00:22:39obviously,
00:22:40to invent a,
00:22:41fairly major decision,
00:22:43I assume,
00:22:44that GC1 was withering on the vine,
00:22:46and they've jumped in.
00:22:47Yeah.
00:22:48You've got B&W,
00:22:49we're looking at it now,
00:22:50which, of course,
00:22:51you're also familiar with,
00:22:52the American series,
00:22:53basically,
00:22:54a slightly different spec version,
00:22:56but basically,
00:22:57it looks out,
00:22:58and, of course,
00:22:59a B&W,
00:23:00that's a return to American model,
00:23:01because,
00:23:02the 80's,
00:23:03but,
00:23:04you know,
00:23:05the 80's,
00:23:06the 80's,
00:23:07the 80's,
00:23:08they also turned up,
00:23:09with a V8,
00:23:10won a championship,
00:23:11in,
00:23:1267 years ago.
00:23:13There's more variety,
00:23:14there's more variety,
00:23:15as well as we've got the line,
00:23:17despite,
00:23:18you don't get into the streets,
00:23:19but,
00:23:20variety,
00:23:21so,
00:23:22Walshers,
00:23:23which,
00:23:24Walshers are quite close,
00:23:26if you've had over the years here,
00:23:27at the bar,
00:23:28it's very much a focus,
00:23:29at the water,
00:23:30the water,
00:23:31It does, and actually, I think we really want Merwin coming in, you know, for a while there
00:23:38it was Porsche Dominator, which is great, we love that, but I mean, it really makes
00:23:45a classic, all the different manufacturers in, and the competition is really up the bar
00:23:48for everybody, so it's been great, and I think it's the best race.
00:24:01Here, for sure we do in the 6th gear for our cars for so long.
00:24:14We go up 7 o'clock from the down, but I'm on the street just a bad Celtic football.
00:24:21Watch out the number 64 corner, trying to fend off the champion.
00:24:25You're not going to be a two-six seconds.
00:24:27You get a little bit.
00:24:28He's coming for the RL to switch again.
00:24:31The fantastic son.
00:24:33Meanwhile, Jan Magnussen, the last three laps in a row have been faster each time.
00:24:39So he's now almost a whole second faster than anybody went to qualify.
00:24:43Absolutely stunning performance by Jan Magnussen.
00:24:46First of all, to get three, three laps in a row, to do three fastest laps in succession,
00:24:50is amazing in itself.
00:24:52And the speed is going, is fantastic as well.
00:24:54We are side by side now down into North Sand Court.
00:24:57That's not the way you're facing, look at that make-up.
00:24:59No, it's tough.
00:25:00You're coming in there so hard.
00:25:01It's easy to lock up there.
00:25:03We're looking at two drivers who started their careers in very competitive single seats.
00:25:07They seem to have neglected the roof of Panthers in the windshield of in front of them
00:25:11because they are banging all of the three or whatever days.
00:25:15And we said at the beginning of the race, as we do so often,
00:25:19it's like a form of a four-tip Lampard.
00:25:22And they forget there's 23 or three-quarter hours that we go after that.
00:25:25And these guys are still at it exactly the same way.
00:25:27Even as the Peugeot goes past, they're not blinking because they don't want to lose their brakes.
00:25:32Talk to me, Blink, you know, you can see the Peugeot flashing as long as we come up
00:25:35behind those three cars.
00:25:36Yeah, what is it like when you're down there, down to the straights,
00:25:39an excursor of 90 points or whatever it is?
00:25:41Yeah.
00:25:41And you're getting in your mirrors.
00:25:42How much do you see the crash?
00:25:44Well, you know, the Peugeot and the Audis, it's not a big deal.
00:25:47They're so fast.
00:25:48They go by so quick.
00:25:49You know, as long as you see it, they'll get by quickly.
00:25:52It's the only two and the other cars that really don't have much straightaway.
00:25:56And it's the top.
00:25:57We're going to get down to the big road.
00:26:01And I guess Justine has got somebody else to talk to us.
00:26:04Let's catch up with the actual road.
00:26:08What an incredible fight with the Ferraris.
00:26:12You know, I think we saw a little bit of this in qualifying.
00:26:16I think the fans kind of thought maybe it was going to be a good fight.
00:26:20This is some of the greatest racing in the history of Le Mans.
00:26:23We're very proud to be part of that.
00:26:24It's just amazing to see this at this moment.
00:26:29Are you captain for the rest of the race?
00:26:32Oh, yes.
00:26:32You know, the cars are capable of this kind of pace.
00:26:34We work all week long to set the cars up so that they're good race cars.
00:26:39And obviously, Ferrari has done the same thing.
00:26:41I think this is a battle that you can see you on for the next 17 hours.
00:26:45It's going to be very interesting when it gets down to the end.
00:26:48I'm sure we're going to come back to see that with you.
00:26:51I'll be looking forward to seeing you maybe in a few more hours.
00:26:54We'll see where we are.
00:26:55Thank you so much.
00:28:08Talking about the growth of GT2, in a way, and particularly in the States where GT1 has ceased to exist, essentially, you know, it gives the fans just as much variety.
00:28:19The fact that the Vex, this is now on pit road in third place, that's Jan Magnusson's palm-beating lap-time car at the moment.
00:28:27The fact that the Corvette is in GT2, probably to even well-educated fans, doesn't make a lot of difference.
00:28:34As we were saying earlier on, it doesn't sound any different, to any but a commissar with a tape measure, it doesn't look an awful lot different.
00:28:43You know, it's the cool Vex as well, it's not like it's suddenly got a 1.6-litre 4.7 motor or anything.
00:28:49No, and we were hoping they would eventually finish up with GT1 and with GT2, because you really can't tell the difference between them.
00:28:57They see the error of their ways and come over to your side, that's what you're saying, yeah.
00:29:01Get some competition going, and it's been great.
00:29:02Well, it's great to win a race against lots of Porsches, but you can get Porsche racing for that.
00:29:07When you get to win a race against Porsches, and Ferraris, and BMWs, and Aston Martins, and anything else that can come along,
00:29:14then we started to look at some really entertaining great racing indeed.
00:29:19I'm really disappointed in the part of the hearing.
00:29:21You have to believe me after watching this, I wish I was still in it.
00:29:24I know, and the listeners have got such a strong heritage.
00:29:27I know there's a huge number of fans over here in Europe as well as in the States watching and listening and hoping for better things.
00:29:34We look forward to seeing you back next year.
00:29:35Thanks, guys.
00:29:36Thanks for having me out.
00:29:37Time with us.
00:29:38It's been a pleasure.
00:29:39We'll take a quick commercial break.
00:29:41Be back live at Le Mans in just a second.
00:29:43Welcome back live to Le Mans as you see the number 12 Lola coming off pit road.
00:29:54Marco Andretti at the wheel, continuing our American theme of the last several minutes.
00:29:59On to pit road comes the car that is currently by inches second in the GT2 class.
00:30:05Oliver Gavin at the wheel of the 64 CompuAir GM Goodrich Corvette.
00:30:10And he will stay in the car.
00:30:13That means Jamie Melo goes at least a lap longer on fuel.
00:30:17He now owes us a stop.
00:30:19And that was a quick turnaround from the Pat Miller boys, Jeremy Shaw, exactly as we used to say.
00:30:24Yeah, that was a very great stop there by, as you said, the Pat Miller guys.
00:30:29It's a class organisation.
00:30:30They are super well organised.
00:30:33They very rarely make mistakes.
00:30:35And if you're able to watch the race at Seabring, assuming 12 hours back in March,
00:30:39you will see a very rare occurrence when the two Corvettes ran into each other in the pit lane,
00:30:45which was basically unthinkable.
00:30:47But it did happen.
00:30:49And they are absolutely bounden to me that there won't be any mess-ups like that here at Le Mans.
00:30:54But while we're continuing the US string here,
00:30:58we've got another guest who's been, again, been waiting back here for quite a long time.
00:31:02His name's Craig Hampson.
00:31:03And if you're not familiar with Craig Hampson, he has been with Newman House Racing now for, well...
00:31:0917 years.
00:31:10Yes, exactly, 17 years, basically for his own racing career.
00:31:14He's worked as a race engineer with all the greats, with Nigel Mansell,
00:31:18particularly, of course, with Sebastian Bordeaux.
00:31:21And Craig, there's a weekend off for the IndyCar Series.
00:31:25Newman House Racing is still running a car for Hideki Noda in the IndyCar Series in the United States.
00:31:29But this is a weekend off for you. What are you doing here?
00:31:32Well, thankfully, Mr. and Mrs. Haas allowed me to use some of a valuable vacation time
00:31:37and come to Le Mans for the first time.
00:31:39I've actually never even been to France before.
00:31:42When Sebastian ran for us for five very successful years,
00:31:45he and I became really good friends.
00:31:47And Le Mans is his hometown, and racing here is near and dear to his heart.
00:31:52And I kind of had the vibe that with all the good preparations they had done,
00:31:55he was going to stand a chance to run really well.
00:31:58So I decided to come and spend a few days in France.
00:32:02And what do you think?
00:32:04Well, obviously, I'm very disappointed that he never even got to drive the car in the race.
00:32:08You know, he did an outstanding job putting the thing on pole,
00:32:11and I followed the preparations that they did all week with practice
00:32:15and the changes they were making to the car.
00:32:18I thought the car had a really good setup on it.
00:32:20They had been pretty much quickest in every session.
00:32:22So I thought it was going to go really well.
00:32:24But they were bitten by an unforeseen circumstance.
00:32:28It was kind of one of those racing things that no matter how much money you spend,
00:32:32no matter how much you prepare, sometimes things come up and get you.
00:32:35In this case, the tub had a failure of the carbon fiber,
00:32:38and one of the front suspension links came out.
00:32:41And that cannot be fixed in fit lane, so he is done.
00:32:44He didn't even get a chance to grab the car.
00:32:46Yeah, so disappointing for the guy.
00:32:47And, of course, we were speaking there with Simon Paginot,
00:32:50and he very eloquently expressed disappointment.
00:32:54I know what Sebastian would be feeling as well.
00:32:56Now, because you're used to the airport warrants,
00:32:58what is your impression of the Le Mans 24 hours?
00:33:01Well, you know, in coming here, I think most people in racing,
00:33:05they were fans before they became employees of racing,
00:33:08and certainly I was a race fan before I ever got it as a job.
00:33:12And actually, I was a sports car fan.
00:33:14I kind of liked the IMSA prototype series in the United States.
00:33:16I actually tried to get a job with Tom Walkinshaw,
00:33:19just as all that shut down before I went to Newman Haas.
00:33:23So, I'm very excited to be here.
00:33:25I see a lot of familiar faces in Bentley,
00:33:27people that I work with in the IndyCar and Champ Car Series.
00:33:31They're staffing cars up and down.
00:33:33Though it seems like knowing me might be the kiss of death for this thing,
00:33:36because one by one, people I know, their cars aren't running too well.
00:33:39You know, ex-Newman Haas drivers,
00:33:41Nigel made it only a few laps in the race.
00:33:44Sebastian never got a chance to drive.
00:33:45And it even looks like it goes down through the generations,
00:33:48because Marco Andretti, he's out there, but they're struggling.
00:33:51So, I've got my fingers crossed, I'd say, for the guys from Highcroft.
00:33:56That's a Honda-powered entry, and we run Honda engines in the IRL series.
00:34:01And so, I know some guys on that team,
00:34:03and I hope they stand a good shot here today.
00:34:05Well, with that kind of touch of luck,
00:34:08maybe you ought to consider a job in the announce booth.
00:34:10That's what we call the curse of the commentary.
00:34:11Well, I shouldn't have said anything.
00:34:13Will Phillips, the race engineer there, is going to be furious with it.
00:34:16It is the intense legacy of the Lamborghini,
00:34:20which again, here at 10 o'clock at night,
00:34:23and we're going to sell out the issues of the Lamborghini.
00:34:26This is the Lamborghini, it is still running.
00:34:28Yes, we've had a solo return, so we've been away so far.
00:34:31It's a tremendous race of it.
00:34:33Unfortunately, we've seen Pipsops here for one of the Galaxy Signature Plus,
00:34:39Aston Martin, Laura Aston Martin coming in for a routine service.
00:34:43It's also the Orica AIM-engined car.
00:34:46But, Craig, you know, we've got this GT2, this GT2 contest.
00:34:52You know what you mean by the 50-50 hours.
00:34:55It is fantastic.
00:34:56Yeah, the GT2 battle is making the race, really.
00:35:00Great for television.
00:35:01You know, I've always been more a prototype guy
00:35:03because I like the sort of high-tech nature and the science behind it.
00:35:06But in terms of pure entertainment,
00:35:08you cannot beat what the Resee guys and the Corvette guys are doing.
00:35:12And we see a lot of their racing in the United States.
00:35:15They kind of hammer on each other week after week.
00:35:17And you're getting to see it here in France.
00:35:19I have a feeling the third-place Corvette might want to just keep an eye on all of this
00:35:23because if those two guys keep doing that,
00:35:25they're going to end up in the heat somewhere.
00:35:27And third place will be looking pretty strong.
00:35:30You're an engineer.
00:35:31I mean, right now the HR series is a one-night thing.
00:35:36There's not a lot of...
00:35:36It doesn't give you an awful lot of scope as an engineer.
00:35:40And here you are looking at the prototype.
00:35:42Take all the garage up and down the pit lane.
00:35:44Yeah, Newman House Racing,
00:35:46we feel like we're an engineering-driven organization.
00:35:49We have a lot of engineers
00:35:50and we have a lot of input in how the team is run.
00:35:53We believe in competition.
00:35:54We really think there should be multiple engine manufacturers.
00:35:57We think there should be multiple makes of chassis.
00:36:00And we should write a good rule book
00:36:01and then let us do our thing
00:36:03and try to exploit the rule book the best we can.
00:36:06I'm not a big fan of spec racing.
00:36:07I don't think it's terribly successful when you're trying to do it.
00:36:11And that makes the ALMS or the Maw type of racing really exciting for us.
00:36:17The fact that there's all different things going on.
00:36:21You know, if you look,
00:36:22both Audi and Pujo have basically tried to sell it in the same way.
00:36:26with a big diesel and with a turbocharger on it,
00:36:30and one of them is going two steps and a lot of back
00:36:31and the other one, that's pretty impressive.
00:36:33So I have some idea of how far we could go out of the water
00:36:36to achieve what they've achieved.
00:36:38Obviously, they've spent a lot of money,
00:36:40so it has a lot of money.
00:36:41But it's all pretty neat
00:36:43and something that I hope we get back in the United States more,
00:36:46that we can really take advantage of high technology,
00:36:50maybe environmentally relevant,
00:36:52and kind of become more part of the real world
00:36:54that we spoke to this series.
00:36:55See, the overall thing is you have to start a sports car program
00:36:58where you can just look at the rule,
00:37:00look at the start of the shoot of paper,
00:37:01or a cut of paper.
00:37:03What's the cat driven approach between the shoot of paper?
00:37:06A blank screen.
00:37:07A screen.
00:37:07Yeah, there you go.
00:37:08And design your own program and your own project.
00:37:11And boy, that would get some fans excited to hear
00:37:14that a team with the engineering prowess and success
00:37:18and human hearts were looking at sports car racing
00:37:20would be raising quite a few hackles.
00:37:22But we're always open to ideas.
00:37:24So if there's a sponsor out there,
00:37:26a manufacturer out there that wants to give Carl Haas a call,
00:37:28I'm sure he would be happy to listen to it.
00:37:30Oh, yeah, I bet he would too.
00:37:33Yeah, and what engineer doesn't relish a challenge,
00:37:35and especially where you've got something you've never done before.
00:37:38I mean, you know, Audi and Peugeot are going that way with the diesels,
00:37:41with all the different requirements of that huge torque,
00:37:44and everything else is our second place car and fourth place car come off,
00:37:49bit road.
00:37:49And I've been asking you in second place,
00:37:51a minute and thirty-five behind racing Alexander-Bourdes,
00:37:54and in fourth position they're watching the A,
00:37:57who is a lap off the lead.
00:37:59All three Audis are at least a lap off the lead.
00:38:03In fact, number nine Audi are now two laps off,
00:38:06the number seven Audi three laps off the lead
00:38:09after its incident earlier on.
00:38:11Now, both of these cars want to pit lane this time around,
00:38:13but the Audi and the Peugeot are eventually stretched off
00:38:17to 13 laps, which is the first time I think they've done that
00:38:20in the race so far.
00:38:21Okay, I wonder if we're starting to see slightly cooler and ambient temperatures
00:38:25and maybe a slightly denser chart,
00:38:27just giving them a bit more power,
00:38:30while being able to lean off the map,
00:38:31or maybe finally the number two team have decided
00:38:34if the number one car are going to continue putting 13 laps,
00:38:38we absolutely have to step in line with that
00:38:40and not have a break in our marriage.
00:38:42And that was another great review there,
00:38:44of the fact that just two mechanics were allowed to go over the wheel,
00:38:48so if they get a console line to work on the car
00:38:50instead of the car, they're just sitting there,
00:38:53and it's a very well-carned-off operation down the barrel,
00:38:57which is exactly what's on all gas,
00:38:58but even house racing is used to,
00:39:02you know, you're happy enough for the years
00:39:03and shot the house in the week, I see it.
00:39:05Yeah, obviously the way they approach the pit stops here
00:39:07is very different.
00:39:08A limitation on the number of people,
00:39:10so the pit stops take a lot longer,
00:39:11the fuel goes in a lot slower.
00:39:14I'm interested in you,
00:39:15you're keeping track of how many laps
00:39:17the guys are doing on the stints,
00:39:19and it's important to know that driver
00:39:20can have a big influence on that,
00:39:22the way he drives.
00:39:23In fact, a lot of our success, I thought,
00:39:25in the Jump Car World Series with Sebastian
00:39:27was because he could make really good fuel mileage.
00:39:30And I think he learned that actually racing here at Le Mans
00:39:33and brought it to the United States,
00:39:34and then when everybody saw how well he was able to do
00:39:37by going fast and making good fuel mileage,
00:39:40well, they started to do it too.
00:39:41Well, we had exactly that comment from Simon Paginot
00:39:45about how awesome Sebastian Baudet was
00:39:48at driving this thing quick and saving the fuel,
00:39:51and that, yeah, exactly that chap car heritage
00:39:54has really paid off there.
00:39:56We're going to get a quick word now in a moment
00:39:58with Nikko Nassion,
00:39:59who has just stepped out of the second place,
00:40:01number two Peugeot,
00:40:03so he's handed over to Font Montagnier,
00:40:06who started the car.
00:40:08So we're now fully through their first cycle
00:40:12of double stints,
00:40:13so triple stints then.
00:40:15So that's nine stops completed
00:40:17for each of our lead versions
00:40:20except for the front running one.
00:40:22Let's get down to the mid lane then.
00:40:24We're going to see you,
00:40:37just stepped out of the car.
00:40:39How is things going?
00:40:41We've just been talking to the engineer.
00:40:44Everything's going so well at the moment,
00:40:48but I'm having a bit of a problem driving with it at the moment,
00:40:52so we've got to make some changes.
00:40:55That's interesting.
00:40:56You're talking to the engineer to try and get a better compromise in the car.
00:41:04I'm getting the problems in the corners at the moment.
00:41:07Bring it on to it, get it through the corners.
00:41:11We're not able to do a good time to it.
00:41:15A little stressed.
00:41:18Sebastian Bordet, we had the car of Sebastian in the 3rd,
00:41:23abandoned, did you think that was a doubt about it?
00:41:26Now that the three cars of Sebastian has retired,
00:41:29is it going to be a problem for you?
00:41:31No, it shouldn't be a problem.
00:41:34Three cars, you have only got three more cars,
00:41:36he's saying three cars should be enough,
00:41:38but it's difficult for us already.
00:41:40That's racing now, we've really got to focus on trying to get our cars to finish
00:41:43and make sure
00:41:48paying attention, he says, several times to make sure we don't make any mistakes.
00:41:53Try and make sure we try and stay closer to the lead Peugeot.
00:41:58So, interesting, Nick Manassio and they had exactly the same problem that the Audi's have,
00:42:04and was trying to stay in touch with the lead Peugeot,
00:42:06but whoa, hang on a minute, he's in those Peugeot overalls.
00:42:09And Jeremy, you know, you've been counting the laps over the last,
00:42:12oh, that's our GT2 leader in, yes, Jeremy Melo is in for service.
00:42:17So, over Gavin, who was some way behind him after stopping, what, three laps ago,
00:42:23should now be right on his tail,
00:42:27or, well, Jamie Melo is down and gone,
00:42:30Gav comes through the Ford chicane,
00:42:32I'm sure that was him in that shot briefly,
00:42:35let's listen.
00:42:37Yep, that was him there,
00:42:39right under our toes,
00:42:40as we get on board with our race leading Peugeot 908,
00:42:44right up behind the BMW,
00:42:45probably just as well in a lot of cases,
00:42:47we don't have that defense in the cars,
00:42:50into pit road,
00:42:52I think Peugeot 908 is on the bus,
00:42:53yes, he did.
00:42:55So he comes down pit road to make his stop,
00:42:58and that was Jeremy Shaw,
00:43:01another 13 lapper.
00:43:04I think it was interesting that Manassio was talking about having trouble with the handling of the car,
00:43:10and usually when the car, say, has a lot of understeer,
00:43:13it's difficult to drive,
00:43:14you can't focus on making mileage,
00:43:15and so we're noticing that the number one car is going further on each stint.
00:43:19The cars are identical,
00:43:21so that doesn't make a ton of sense,
00:43:22except that one car is obviously handling better than the other,
00:43:25and that's why the drivers are able to make better mileage.
00:43:27Well, they've really got that number one car in the sweet spot,
00:43:30and I wonder whether Vultz, Genet, and Davidson had one tilt-up hold,
00:43:35and then went,
00:43:36okay, do you know what,
00:43:36we're going to spend the remaining hour of the session
00:43:39not going fast in the last 10 minutes before midnight Thursday,
00:43:43they're concentrating on going fast in the 24 hours,
00:43:45between 3 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday,
00:43:48because that's the big payday,
00:43:50and, you know,
00:43:50sometimes you just have to concentrate 100% on the biggest target,
00:43:55and let somebody else pick up some of the smaller stuff.
00:43:58And it's great to watch the way they orchestrate these pit stops,
00:44:02there's only two people allowed to go half a line at any one time,
00:44:05but if you don't notice there,
00:44:07this is a lot to stop,
00:44:09a problem there with the right front wheel,
00:44:10on the change of that Peugeot.
00:44:12Okay, now the gun's not going on,
00:44:14there it is.
00:44:15Alexander Vultz has vacated his seat march,
00:44:17and he goes back out.
00:44:19Always just a tiny little question mark,
00:44:22we're going to have to watch that car,
00:44:23and watch it right front time for the first lap,
00:44:26just to make sure it's still actually on the car.
00:44:29What a ruffle and say,
00:44:30though,
00:44:30that there's two people only on time over,
00:44:33but there's four or five people
00:44:35who are journelling around the car,
00:44:37and see if it's fantastic.
00:44:38But only five can get across the line,
00:44:40out of the new road.
00:44:41It's back out on tango's arc.
00:44:43Race leader with March 8,
00:44:45the wheel of the budget.
00:44:50Welcome back live to Le Mans,
00:44:52and as we head into the evening,
00:44:53it is 10.17 and 10.18 now here,
00:44:56Central European time,
00:44:589.18 in the UK.
00:45:00What's that, Eastern?
00:45:01I have no idea.
00:45:02It's 2pm Eastern minus 6.
00:45:05That's minus 6 in Hawaii or somewhere.
00:45:08Wherever you are,
00:45:09and welcome to our coverage of Le Mans
00:45:11here on Eurosport,
00:45:12and wherever else you may be watching
00:45:14across the planet,
00:45:15because I know you don't necessarily
00:45:16have to be in Europe to be listening,
00:45:18so hello to everybody in Southern California.
00:45:21March 8,
00:45:22Leeds for Peugeot has just taken over
00:45:24the lead number one car last year's race winner,
00:45:27sharing with fellow winner Alexander Burt
00:45:29and newcomer to the team,
00:45:31Anthony Davidson.
00:45:32They lead now by getting on for three minutes
00:45:36from the number two Peugeot,
00:45:37with their teammate Frank Montaghi,
00:45:39has just taken over from Nick Vanassian,
00:45:41who's complaining about handling roles
00:45:43with that cardio,
00:45:44and that's what's leading to their
00:45:46relative high fuel consumption
00:45:49compared to their teammates.
00:45:50Yeah,
00:45:51that gap will be a lot less
00:45:52the next time
00:45:53the race leader comes to pass
00:45:54the start-to-finish final,
00:45:55as we've seen,
00:45:56the number 15 car,
00:45:58Christian Bancrood there,
00:45:59rejoining someone smokily from the pillar.
00:46:01You can see now,
00:46:01it's almost dark here,
00:46:04and there is something,
00:46:05there's not something
00:46:06that's called like it,
00:46:07but it'll be a lot darker
00:46:09if it was his turn
00:46:09in some few nights ago,
00:46:10but conditions are very,
00:46:13very good right now,
00:46:14but that hits off the market,
00:46:16I've seen all that problem
00:46:17with the right front wheel,
00:46:18that will be lost,
00:46:20the wheel right there,
00:46:21on that right front,
00:46:22and I've postponed
00:46:23to the 50th second,
00:46:24so Janae has just come past
00:46:26to complete Durant,
00:46:28no, he hasn't yet been passed,
00:46:30it's been about that 18,
00:46:31so we won't see
00:46:32what the gap is
00:46:32between Janae and Bancrood,
00:46:34so we've just come past now,
00:46:36as well today,
00:46:37and of course,
00:46:38I don't know that
00:46:3910, 15 seconds,
00:46:40that quick stop,
00:46:41but it's so many times
00:46:43as they do,
00:46:44Tony's spent in the fifth,
00:46:45they've spent 10 minutes,
00:46:4610 seconds,
00:46:46and 9 minutes,
00:46:4752 of their closest rivals
00:46:49in car number two,
00:46:50so that will certainly
00:46:51have taken quite a bit
00:46:52out of it,
00:46:53the top little strip
00:46:54of the RML,
00:46:55HPE Coupe comes in,
00:46:58and that is currently
00:46:59lying in fourth in P2,
00:47:00as we get back down
00:47:01to the pit road.
00:47:03Alexander Wold,
00:47:04you're just coming
00:47:05out of the car,
00:47:06how is it going
00:47:07on the top of the field?
00:47:08In English or German?
00:47:10In English, please.
00:47:11Well, it feels good
00:47:12to be in the lead,
00:47:13because,
00:47:14I've said it before,
00:47:16you dream about the victory,
00:47:18you think about the victory,
00:47:19and you work 365 days
00:47:21for the victory,
00:47:22and now to lead
00:47:23is, of course,
00:47:24really good,
00:47:24but you guys at home
00:47:26and you know
00:47:27it's very early in the race,
00:47:29it's a long race,
00:47:30but at the moment
00:47:31we're on the target,
00:47:31we're leading,
00:47:32so that's very good.
00:47:33You were in our studio
00:47:35on Friday,
00:47:35and you were a little bit
00:47:36concerned about the Audi's,
00:47:38because nobody knew
00:47:39how quick they really are.
00:47:41What do you think now?
00:47:43Well,
00:47:43we had a very fast start
00:47:45of the race,
00:47:46but the every chance
00:47:47of them are not so much slower.
00:47:49We had a bit of luck
00:47:50that car number seven
00:47:51had the problem,
00:47:52because after the second
00:47:53or third stint,
00:47:54they had the same average times,
00:47:55but we seem to be
00:47:57a bit faster in the pits
00:47:58and are in the hot laps,
00:48:00so we pulled the gap
00:48:01and that is right now.
00:48:02What's the program now for you?
00:48:05I'm trying to speak to my engineer,
00:48:07but every TV station
00:48:08around the world
00:48:09is grabbing me now,
00:48:10but I will speak to my engineer,
00:48:11then get a bit of food,
00:48:13so I must have sleep
00:48:14and go again.
00:48:14Yeah, thank you very much.
00:48:17Alexander Vortz leading the race
00:48:19as he was at the end last year,
00:48:22and in fact,
00:48:22he put in Jack Hicks'
00:48:2313-year gap between first
00:48:26and all the time.
00:48:27Of course,
00:48:27it's close to most recent wins.
00:48:30He first won this race in 1996.
00:48:33He was just 22 years old.
00:48:35He'll be joined in the booth
00:48:36by Brian Sanders,
00:48:36Brian Helmer,
00:48:37and you,
00:48:38when Alexander Vortz
00:48:39has won the race here
00:48:40in 1996.
00:48:42I guess I was about to add.
00:48:44I'm saying 13-14 years
00:48:46at the end of the year.
00:48:48Welcome, Brian.
00:48:49Now,
00:48:50American Le Mans Series fans
00:48:51will know your name well.
00:48:52Single racing fans
00:48:54will know your name well,
00:48:54but you're here
00:48:56in the booth of Le Mans,
00:48:58but we're not talking
00:48:58about a car
00:48:59when you're driving.
00:49:00We're not talking
00:49:00about a car
00:49:01when you're driving.
00:49:02Let's retire it.
00:49:03You're not just here
00:49:04or on a holiday
00:49:05or...?
00:49:06Well,
00:49:07I would guess
00:49:08I'd say holiday in a way,
00:49:09actually.
00:49:10Team Falcon Tired
00:49:11from the AOMS
00:49:12has decided
00:49:13that they want to up there
00:49:14efforts worldwide,
00:49:16and the best way
00:49:16to do that,
00:49:17I think,
00:49:17is to actually come
00:49:18to Le Mans compete,
00:49:20and the only way
00:49:21to get an invitation
00:49:22to Le Mans
00:49:22is to actually be here
00:49:23and speak with the ACO
00:49:24and maintain
00:49:25all the sites
00:49:26and it seems
00:49:27because,
00:49:27as you guys know,
00:49:28there's nothing
00:49:29in the way
00:49:29quite a bit of a city.
00:49:30It certainly cannot
00:49:31come to the AOMS
00:49:33and seeing it
00:49:34once or twice.
00:49:35So they're here
00:49:35at that meeting
00:49:36with the ACO
00:49:37taking a lot of
00:49:38pictures of everything
00:49:38to try and prepare
00:49:40and hope that,
00:49:41you know,
00:49:41one,
00:49:42we're prepared enough
00:49:42to come here
00:49:43and we have
00:49:43a good enough
00:49:44accommodation
00:49:45to be here next year
00:49:46and two
00:49:46with the ACO
00:49:47and the ACO
00:49:47is to be able
00:49:48to focus on the
00:49:49security
00:49:49and the clearance
00:49:51across the
00:49:51this extermination
00:49:52of the internet
00:49:53design
00:49:53and the current
00:49:53of the whole series
00:49:54and just now
00:49:55on the decision
00:49:56of this season's program
00:49:57and on brand new
00:49:58the needed crisis
00:49:59is going to be
00:50:00going to be
00:50:01the opportunity
00:50:01for the program
00:50:02has to go
00:50:03and how we are
00:50:04getting closer
00:50:05and closer
00:50:05to the other
00:50:06of the place
00:50:06and how we are
00:50:07there's no question
00:50:08about it
00:50:08and to be firmly
00:50:09and honest
00:50:10I think it's
00:50:10probably surprised
00:50:11everybody
00:50:11myself included
00:50:13good surprises
00:50:15are certainly
00:50:15always better
00:50:16than bad surprises
00:50:17but they've worked
00:50:18extremely hard
00:50:18in the off season
00:50:19they've taken
00:50:20a lot of information
00:50:20that they've gained
00:50:21over the years
00:50:22in Japanese GT
00:50:24and been able
00:50:25to apply that
00:50:25to our program
00:50:26a little bit
00:50:26but as you know
00:50:27in ALMS
00:50:29we're in a Porsche
00:50:30and there's nothing
00:50:30quite like building
00:50:31a tire for a Porsche
00:50:32so it's created
00:50:33a whole other set
00:50:34of issues
00:50:34that we weren't
00:50:35really prepared for
00:50:36and now are beginning
00:50:36to deal with
00:50:37as this time goes on
00:50:39I did
00:50:52I was here in 2005
00:50:53with the Panos
00:50:54and it is
00:50:54it is probably
00:50:55my first proper
00:50:57full-time season
00:50:57in quite some years
00:50:59since actually
00:51:00probably 2005
00:51:01with the Panos
00:51:02and it's a different
00:51:03animal
00:51:03the Porsche
00:51:04to the Panos
00:51:05so fortunately
00:51:07for me
00:51:07I have probably
00:51:08the best Porsche
00:51:09driver in the world
00:51:10as my co-driver
00:51:11so you just kind of
00:51:12when your numbers call
00:51:15get in and do the job
00:51:16and learn as much
00:51:16as you can
00:51:17while you're
00:51:17in that situation
00:51:18and you speak
00:51:19there of
00:51:19Paul Fensler
00:51:20who of course
00:51:21is driving here
00:51:21this weekend
00:51:22he's been a factory
00:51:23driver now
00:51:24for several years
00:51:25and former
00:51:25Porsche Civic
00:51:26winner
00:51:26how much are you
00:51:28learning from him?
00:51:29actually
00:51:31he learned tons
00:51:32tons and tons
00:51:33from him
00:51:34he's very
00:51:35very good
00:51:35technically
00:51:36he has a lot
00:51:37a lot of information
00:51:38that he's gained
00:51:39over the years
00:51:40with Porsche
00:51:40and as you can see
00:51:42I think every time
00:51:43he gets in a car
00:51:44he's
00:51:45he's muddy
00:51:46in the back
00:51:47he's got a high
00:51:48tire
00:51:49he's got anything
00:51:50he's got a forward
00:51:51so he's got
00:51:53a lot of time
00:51:54we're looking at
00:51:55Alan Simonson
00:51:56just rejoining
00:51:57in the Hancock Ferrari
00:51:58and this has
00:51:59become quite a
00:52:01signature
00:52:02for tyre companies
00:52:03who are starting
00:52:04to develop
00:52:05their brand
00:52:06latest
00:52:07their brand
00:52:07image
00:52:07going to be
00:52:08by a long
00:52:09team
00:52:09in the
00:52:09time
00:52:09and
00:52:10you're
00:52:10going to be
00:52:11going to be
00:52:11this
00:52:11for Hancock
00:52:12and
00:52:12you're going to
00:52:14find
00:52:14Falcon
00:52:15tires
00:52:15using
00:52:16motorsport
00:52:17to give
00:52:18that
00:52:18possible
00:52:19public
00:52:19awareness
00:52:20secondly
00:52:20huge amount
00:52:22of engineering
00:52:22data and feedback
00:52:23I mean it's a
00:52:24research and development
00:52:25programme like
00:52:25the car
00:52:26that's trying to
00:52:27race car tires
00:52:28around anywhere
00:52:29particularly around
00:52:30a track like this
00:52:31and that
00:52:31again brings us
00:52:33back to exactly
00:52:33where we're starting
00:52:35which is
00:52:35to prove cars
00:52:37to prove that
00:52:37they were reliable
00:52:38to prove that
00:52:39they were
00:52:39promoted to
00:52:40manufacturers
00:52:41to try and
00:52:41convince people
00:52:42that things
00:52:42were worth
00:52:43buying
00:52:44and you know
00:52:45from the front
00:52:45all the things
00:52:46in the back
00:52:46you can pretty
00:52:47much
00:52:47look at
00:52:48any car
00:52:48and say
00:52:49that is
00:52:49still going
00:52:50on
00:52:50and that is
00:52:51very much
00:52:51the case
00:52:52with
00:52:53a tie
00:52:53it's about
00:52:54image
00:52:55but it's
00:52:56also about
00:52:56developing
00:52:56the product
00:52:57and spreading
00:52:58that net
00:52:58there's
00:52:59yeah that's
00:53:00absolutely
00:53:00right
00:53:01and I think
00:53:01as you said
00:53:02you can see
00:53:02that
00:53:03everyone's
00:53:04here
00:53:04at Le Mans
00:53:05because
00:53:06everybody knows
00:53:07that to be the
00:53:09best you have
00:53:09to be the best
00:53:10and that goes
00:53:11all the way
00:53:11from P1
00:53:12with the battle
00:53:12with Peugeot
00:53:13and Audi's
00:53:14and P2
00:53:14with HPD
00:53:15you know
00:53:16all the way
00:53:17down the line
00:53:17to the GT
00:53:19cars
00:53:19and I think
00:53:19you can see
00:53:20that the battling
00:53:22back and forth
00:53:23has been phenomenal
00:53:24so far
00:53:24in all the classes
00:53:25I mean especially
00:53:26especially GT2
00:53:27especially the P2
00:53:29okay
00:53:30our race leader
00:53:32is on the road
00:53:33and this is
00:53:33an unexpected
00:53:34end-stop for
00:53:35Jermaine
00:53:35he's only been out
00:53:36for two ramps
00:53:37incidentally
00:53:38last time around
00:53:39Fremontan
00:53:40he set a brand new
00:53:41fastest ramp
00:53:42the car number two
00:53:43so if they make
00:53:43changes
00:53:44that's good news
00:53:44and drama
00:53:45Tommy Dott
00:53:46he's going underneath
00:53:47the number one car
00:53:48they have a slow
00:53:50right front tyre change
00:53:51we are now choosing
00:53:53exactly the right
00:53:54moment to view
00:53:55what you're a sport
00:53:56but we will be
00:53:58right back
00:53:58on the other side
00:53:59on the other side
00:54:00for the quick
00:54:00virtual brakes
00:54:01so Fremontan
00:54:02in the garage
00:54:03and hard drive
00:54:04up in
00:54:05out the car
00:54:05as the engine
00:54:06cover comes off
00:54:07and bodies
00:54:08hurl themselves
00:54:09at the car
00:54:10going into the cockpit
00:54:12suggests to me
00:54:13an electrical problem
00:54:15possibly
00:54:15and we'll be able
00:54:16to invite you
00:54:17a huge thing
00:54:18coming back
00:54:20on this channel
00:54:22at Leventon
00:54:23we will bring you
00:54:32up to speed
00:54:32as much as we can
00:54:46with the dramas
00:54:47here at Peugeot
00:54:48car's getting full service
00:54:50but our lead
00:54:50is about to change
00:54:52and if you're just
00:54:57joining us
00:54:57that car
00:54:59you were just
00:54:59looking at
00:55:00is the race leader
00:55:01Marc Genet
00:55:02on pit road
00:55:03in Peugeot number one
00:55:04stopped regular
00:55:06stopped a couple
00:55:07of laps ago
00:55:07Jeremy Shaw
00:55:08he is in
00:55:09for a very far
00:55:11yeah absolutely
00:55:13right
00:55:13Marginhaven
00:55:14and this is
00:55:15strategically
00:55:18disastrous
00:55:19for Peugeot
00:55:20he just came in
00:55:21and made a pit stop
00:55:21Alex Burst
00:55:22handed over to
00:55:23Marginhaven
00:55:23the car was running
00:55:24absolutely beautifully
00:55:25they were getting
00:55:26great fuel mining
00:55:27the car seemed
00:55:28very consistent
00:55:28certainly the lap times
00:55:30over the last
00:55:31half an hour
00:55:31they weren't quite
00:55:32as quick at that
00:55:33as they were going
00:55:34before
00:55:34but they had a
00:55:36slightly slower
00:55:36stop just three
00:55:37laps ago
00:55:38when the right
00:55:39front
00:55:39the proper
00:55:40right front
00:55:41wheel
00:55:41the wheel
00:55:42not getting
00:55:42off
00:55:42but I don't think
00:55:44that's in any
00:55:45way to make
00:55:45what it's getting
00:55:46going on
00:55:46now
00:55:46they've actually
00:55:47pulled the
00:55:47under tray
00:55:48off
00:55:48they got
00:55:48on the
00:55:49even
00:55:49process
00:55:49pulled the
00:55:50under tray
00:55:50off
00:55:51the rear
00:55:51on that
00:55:52number one
00:55:52Peugeot
00:55:53I think it's
00:55:53going to be
00:55:54in quite a long
00:55:54time
00:55:55now we're going
00:55:56to get down
00:55:57to the pit road
00:55:57and try and
00:55:58dig a little
00:55:58deeper
00:55:59we've already
00:55:59lost one
00:56:00of our
00:56:01Peugeot
00:56:01that was car
00:56:03number three
00:56:04which had
00:56:04suspension
00:56:05pull out
00:56:06in the tub
00:56:06let's get down
00:56:07and find out
00:56:08what particular
00:56:08canal
00:56:09the boss
00:56:09pushes
00:56:10on
00:56:10there is
00:56:14what happened
00:56:15there is a
00:56:16there was a
00:56:17start
00:56:17so
00:56:19make sure
00:56:25the car
00:56:25is not
00:56:27flowing
00:56:27so we need
00:56:29electricity
00:56:29so
00:56:31I hope
00:56:33it won't
00:56:33take a long
00:56:34time
00:56:34is it more
00:56:36precaution
00:56:37or was it
00:56:38an emergent
00:56:39problem
00:56:40was it an
00:56:41immediate
00:56:42problem
00:56:42or is it
00:56:43just to
00:56:44not have
00:56:45problems
00:56:45later
00:56:46it's a
00:56:47quicker
00:56:47problem
00:56:48we'll
00:56:49see
00:56:49it's with
00:56:50the starter
00:56:51we hope
00:56:52that we'll
00:56:52find
00:56:53the solution
00:56:54okay
00:56:59so
00:56:59Olivier
00:56:59canale
00:57:00saying
00:57:00we're
00:57:00on with
00:57:01the starter
00:57:01now
00:57:02those of you
00:57:03with longer
00:57:03memories
00:57:04will remember
00:57:04the engine
00:57:05load
00:57:05the starter
00:57:06thing
00:57:07the combined
00:57:08starter
00:57:09alternator
00:57:10the ASCO
00:57:11which really
00:57:13didn't serve
00:57:13them too well
00:57:14because it's a very
00:57:14critical
00:57:15of the
00:57:15it was
00:57:17underneath
00:57:17the engine
00:57:18and above
00:57:19the front
00:57:19floor
00:57:20which meant
00:57:20yeah
00:57:21predictably
00:57:21it had a nightmare
00:57:22to change
00:57:23now
00:57:24it's a
00:57:24with a starter
00:57:25and it means
00:57:26to fix it
00:57:26because it might
00:57:27be lights
00:57:28well
00:57:29you know
00:57:29to you and me
00:57:30those are separate
00:57:31items on a road car
00:57:32so in some way
00:57:33that suggests to me
00:57:35the starter
00:57:36must be connected
00:57:37linked in some way
00:57:38with the alternator
00:57:39so
00:57:39because otherwise
00:57:40I mean
00:57:41he wouldn't have been
00:57:41able to leave the pit
00:57:42stand in the first place
00:57:43and they wouldn't need
00:57:45to replace it
00:57:45just to get the lights
00:57:46to work
00:57:46exactly right
00:57:47so they must be
00:57:48losing voltage
00:57:48there
00:57:49unless it was a short
00:57:51maybe
00:57:51after he started
00:57:52again a very bizarre
00:57:54occurrence
00:57:55because I mean
00:57:55these cars
00:57:56they've been raced
00:57:57for three years
00:57:58they've been
00:57:59they've done an
00:57:59astronaut
00:58:00a lot of testing
00:58:01they've done one year
00:58:02at Le Mawr last year
00:58:03they really didn't know
00:58:04any hypothetical problems
00:58:05like the people
00:58:06in the last year
00:58:07they want to see
00:58:07being trolled out
00:58:08and the cars
00:58:10are very too bulletproof
00:58:11in the general rules
00:58:12and so
00:58:12the problems
00:58:13that this will
00:58:14condom make
00:58:14them make sure
00:58:15bizarre
00:58:16well now
00:58:17if they've raced
00:58:17Sebring
00:58:18alright
00:58:18that's a car breaker
00:58:20that's guaranteed
00:58:21then they're raced
00:58:22as far
00:58:22that's another
00:58:23quick track
00:58:24that would test
00:58:25other high performance
00:58:25elements in the package
00:58:26even if that's all
00:58:28they did
00:58:28you'd be sort of
00:58:29surprised
00:58:29that something
00:58:30fairly fundamental
00:58:31like the starter
00:58:32motor is failing
00:58:32but they've done
00:58:3411 24 hour tests
00:58:37this year
00:58:3811 24 hour race
00:58:40simulations
00:58:41and they've not
00:58:42clearly
00:58:43had a problem
00:58:44with a car like this
00:58:44or they wouldn't
00:58:45be having that problem
00:58:46now
00:58:46so Ryan
00:58:47that just says
00:58:48one thing
00:58:49that says
00:58:49freak insulin
00:58:50as we watch
00:58:51Alan McNish
00:58:52now taking
00:58:53over
00:58:53from
00:58:53Dindale
00:58:54Capello
00:58:54in the
00:58:54delayed
00:58:55number 7
00:58:56Audi
00:58:56we know
00:58:57what their
00:58:57problem
00:58:58was
00:58:58it wasn't
00:58:58of their own
00:58:59making
00:58:59but suddenly
00:59:00almost now
00:59:01half the
00:59:02Peugeot Challenge
00:59:03is
00:59:03well one's gone
00:59:04and the second one
00:59:05is faltering
00:59:06so
00:59:06very much so
00:59:08we saw this car
00:59:09the number 7 car
00:59:10with top
00:59:10Christensen
00:59:11at the wheel
00:59:11probably
00:59:12two or three
00:59:13hours ago
00:59:13ran off the road
00:59:14in the Porsche
00:59:14curves
00:59:15trying to negotiate
00:59:16a stricken BMW
00:59:17it was a little
00:59:18bit of a
00:59:18bit of a
00:59:18bit of a
00:59:19bit of a
00:59:20cost of a
00:59:20couple of
00:59:20laps
00:59:21there
00:59:21but now
00:59:21the
00:59:22tails
00:59:24and the
00:59:24landing
00:59:25have
00:59:25been
00:59:25raised
00:59:26significantly
00:59:26they'll be
00:59:27smiling a lot
00:59:28harder
00:59:28you put
00:59:28somebody
00:59:29behind
00:59:29the wheel
00:59:30somebody
00:59:30can fly out
00:59:31the
00:59:31missed
00:59:31behind
00:59:32the wheel
00:59:32while you
00:59:32start
00:59:33his
00:59:33gander is up
00:59:34and he
00:59:35is going to
00:59:35be turning
00:59:36to police
00:59:36right now
00:59:37he feels
00:59:38now
00:59:38as if
00:59:39he's in
00:59:39a position
00:59:40to get
00:59:40the push
00:59:40of pressure
00:59:41up to
00:59:42the
00:59:42rudder
00:59:42but
00:59:42if
00:59:43he's
00:59:43ready to
00:59:44on
00:59:44the
00:59:44motor
00:59:44I
00:59:48think
00:59:49that's
00:59:49what
00:59:49makes
00:59:50this
00:59:50race
00:59:50so
00:59:50special
00:59:51right
00:59:51I
00:59:51mean
00:59:52as you
00:59:53said
00:59:53maybe
00:59:53it
00:59:53is
00:59:53a
00:59:54freak
00:59:54incident
00:59:54with
00:59:54Fujo
00:59:55maybe
00:59:55they're
00:59:55not
00:59:56actually
00:59:56telling us
00:59:56what's
00:59:57truly
00:59:57happening
00:59:58it
00:59:58seems
00:59:59to me
00:59:59a little
00:59:59strange
01:00:00that
01:00:00it
01:00:00would
01:00:00be
01:00:00a
01:00:00starter
01:00:01issue
01:00:01like
01:00:01you
01:00:01said
01:00:02unless
01:00:02it
01:00:02was
01:00:02somewhat
01:00:02connected
01:00:03to
01:00:03the
01:00:03alternate
01:00:03but
01:00:04I
01:00:04did
01:00:05see
01:00:05the
01:00:05lights
