Storms and snow could cause Thanksgiving travel delays for millions of Americans

From lake-effect snow to thunderstorms to an atmospheric river, here's a rundown of all the weather patterns across the U.S. that could affect your travel plans from Wednesday to Black Friday.

00:00A couple different storms that are really going to create a messy situation, especially as we

00:04head into tomorrow, the busiest travel day of the season overall. A lot of alerts here related to

00:09snow, related to wind mainly are the different categories here, but let's break it down a little

00:14bit more. I'm going to start off with where you're most likely to face flight delays. Now, some of

00:20this applies to slowdowns on the road as well, but especially focused in on the airports, the worst

00:25of it where I've given you the red light for poor conditions into Green Bay. We have the snow, we

00:30have the wind. That is not a good combination. Gets a little bit better Thursday and Friday, but still

00:34fair conditions. We got the yellow light. Expect some delays. Now, Atlanta, we were really focused

00:40on you earlier today. We had a ground stop at one point because of the severe weather moving through

00:44tomorrow. A little bit better, but we still could see some delays. Things really improve Thursday

00:50and Friday, though. Everywhere else, New York, New York City specifically, but you're seeing video in

00:54Rochester, New York. We could see some delays there as well. Everybody else, you have the yellow light

00:58really the next several days as we deal with mainly wind and snow in most of these areas, though.

01:05Portland, it's the wind and the rain. So what all can we expect? Let's dive into this a little bit

01:11deeper. Overall, it's the thunderstorms that we've been tracking that Jeff was talking about.

01:15Tomorrow, though, our attention really starts to shift from the thunderstorms to the snow. Cold air

01:21advances behind the cold front with the thunderstorms that allows for more snow,

01:24compared to rain moving forward. In the northwest, though, it is thunderstorms, heavy rainfall,

01:30gusty winds. That is the problem here. So specifically looking at your Wednesday, we've got

01:36a map. We've got it all categorized here. The green, yellow, and red lights. Once again, it's the snow

01:40and the wind that bring the red light poor conditions overall. But several areas, including

01:46really the whole east coast, expect some delays with those fair conditions. And especially, you know,

01:51how it's a domino effect at the airport. You get a couple of delays. It ends up impacting more than you

01:56might expect. Make sure you're giving yourself some extra time tomorrow. Want to make sure you have

02:01the airline app downloaded. Also, if you're flying that way, you can get push notifications when there

02:06are delays. Helps you plan accordingly a little bit faster as well. Take a look at future radar,

02:12how these storms play out and how we see that switch over from rain and thunderstorms

02:17to then snow. It really happens throughout the day. Wednesday, as the core of this storm system,

02:21that area of low pressure starts to move over the Great Lakes. And then we say hello,

02:26lake effect snow. Now also turn your attention to the northwest where that storm starts to move

02:30inland because we're stopping the clock Thursday morning. So Thanksgiving morning, we head throughout

02:35the rest of the weekend into the weekend. It's that northwest storm that starts to move inland and really

02:40starts to create some problems. You start to see some of the rainfall develop, but we're going to end up

02:45with really a cross-country storm that time of year. Snow to the north, wintry mix in the middle

02:49and rain and thunderstorms to the south. I do want to show you, though, Thursday, anyone traveling on

02:56Thanksgiving itself. I know usually it's a shorter distance, but especially around the Great Lakes in the

03:00northeast, we're going to have some problems. We're watching New York City, the wind, that is going to cause

03:05some problems possibly for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade as well. And then you're seeing how the

03:09storm is progressing from the northwest further inland, creating some of those delays. Overall,

03:15though, Thursday, Friday, it's the cold air and it's the snow that really takes the headlines here.
