00:00I'm sick. I may not die today, but it's coming and there's nothing I can do to stop it.
00:05So how'd it feel? Staring down the barrel of a gun.
00:08Wish I could say I'd gotten used to it.
00:10Lennox, on the other hand, she didn't care if she got shot or not.
00:14You haven't really seemed like yourself recently. Is everything cool?
00:20It's not every day you find out your colleague was a teen heartthrob.
00:24My parents stole a lot of money from me.
00:26I worked basically my entire childhood and I have nothing to show for it.
00:30Oh man, I'm sorry.
00:40Sorry man, I didn't realize anyone was in here.
00:42I just thought I left my phone charger in here yesterday.
00:45No, it's all good. My shift starts in a few minutes anyway.
00:51Wait, did you sleep here last night?
00:54What? No.
00:57I caught all the lights on the way in, so I thought I'd get a few extra minutes of shut eye before my shift.
01:03Man, I wish I could fall asleep that fast.
01:06What can I say? We're not all born with a gift, right?
01:08People lie. They hide their true feelings, and sometimes they don't even know how to express those feelings.
01:20As psychiatrists, we are relying on our own personal assessments, which are riddled with mistakes and biases.
01:27And unlike other medical disciplines, we base our treatments on conversation and observation. Nothing more.
01:35Oh, come on. That's a bit of a reductive assessment of what we do, isn't it?
01:41But is it?
01:42What other tools do most psychiatrists employ?
01:45We use any number of clinical tools, but as aids to our initial assessment.
01:50I mean, it sounds like you're proposing that we lead with this stuff?
01:53You want me to let a machine tell me what's going on with my patient?
01:57No, I am proposing that we endeavor to give patients effective and efficient care.
02:04In a world where there is constant pressure to increase patient turnover rates, where there is so little time, we can rely on fMRI to help doctors instantly diagnose bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia, and we can push psychiatry into a true science, where we replace the guesswork with hard facts.
02:25The guesswork?
02:26I'm only referring to certain types of…
02:28Right.
02:29Okay, look.
02:30First of all, from what I've read, fMRI, diagnostically speaking anyway, according to the statistics, it's just not there yet.
02:37But even if it was, a lot of the psych patients coming into my ED are experiencing their first episode.
02:44You know, their initial set of symptoms, and they're disoriented.
02:48Sometimes they're terrified.
02:50They don't even know their psych patients yet.
02:52And what they need in that moment, more than anything, is human contact.
02:56Right?
02:57Empathy?
02:58Compassion?
02:59I am not trying to challenge your methods.
03:03Trust me when I tell you that in addition to its efficiency, there is a tremendous amount of potential in this tech.
03:10And I would love nothing more than to continue my research right here at Gaffney with you.
03:16How we doing, Cora?
03:19Pretty good.
03:20She's coughing a lot.
03:23I'll order another albuterol nebulizer.
03:26That should help.
03:28Doing okay?
03:29I know the first few days in the isolator takes some getting used to.
03:33I keep thinking about this pet fish I had in kindergarten.
03:37Octavio.
03:38Yeah.
03:39Yeah.
03:41I used to stare at him in his little fishbowl.
03:44Seems so cozy with his castle and treasure chest.
03:47Doesn't seem so cozy now.
03:51now? Look, I know it's not ideal, but this is the best way to keep you safe. Your immune
04:01deficiency disorder means that your body can't protect itself from infection. Inside the fish
04:06bowl, no germs can get in, so all you have to worry about is getting better. Okay. I mean, plus,
04:14it doesn't feel cozy in there because you haven't done any decorating yet. Decorating? Yeah.
04:21I mean, I'm thinking some curtains in here, maybe a few black-pink posters, huh? You're being
04:28sarcastic. Maybe a little, but it doesn't mean we can't find ways to make you feel more at
04:34home, okay? So how about we both think on it? Okay. She's getting worse, isn't she?
04:51Her blood pressure is dropping and lactate is rising, which are markers for sepsis. But the
04:56only thing that's going to make her better in the long term is a stem cell transplant.
05:01Any word on the test results? There's nothing from the registry. And your test results aren't
05:05back yet, but I will let you know as soon as I hear. But if I am a match with Cora,
05:10how soon can we do the stem cell transplant? And hopefully within hours.
05:16I don't understand how this happened so fast. She was such a healthy girl, and then suddenly
05:21these past few months, when I decided to have her on my own through IVF, I was so scared.
05:29scared. But then she arrived, and all the worry went away because she was perfect. And we
05:36were perfect. Just the two of us.
05:47Help! Someone!
05:49What's going on?
05:50They said to bring it. I kept it cold.
05:52Oh, my God! What is it?
05:58Lionel Blake, 37-year-old male, left hand scabbered off in a circular saw accident in shock.
06:03The heart rate's 126, BP's 95 over 54. Coworker found him. Used his belt as a tourniquet
06:07until we got there. Complete amputation. How much blood was there at the sink?
06:10A lot. And we got the hand.
06:11All right, we'll get it in a sterile bag.
06:13Okay, I'm on it.
06:14All right, on my count.
06:16Ready? One, two, three.
06:22100-microfentanil. Let's get a cardiomonitor and oxygen, and let's get another IV and hang
06:27a unit of...
06:28Oh, negative. Got it.
06:29You are going to surgery, Mr. Blake. Page hand of vascular, please. I need help getting
06:34this hand reattached.
06:35Wait.
06:36No, no, no. Lie back down, sir. Lie back down.
06:37Please, let me go.
06:39Blake, come on now.
06:40You don't understand.
06:41What don't I understand, sir?
06:42I don't want it reattached.
06:44Excuse me?
06:45I cut it off on purpose.
07:00So it's a no on the reattachment.
07:03Yeah, a hard no.
07:04They won't engage much beyond that.
07:06Some kind of woodworker?
07:08Makes high-end furniture.
07:10The guy that brought them in said that they're working together here to show them.
07:15Shriek, he ran in, found him in a pool of blood.
07:18Any mental illness in here?
07:20No, no. Nothing in his chart.
07:23Could this be...
07:24What was that called?
07:26You know, when a person wants to remove their healthy limbs.
07:30What was that?
07:31Oh, body integrity identity disorder?
07:33I mean, it could be.
07:34It's hard to say without talking to him.
07:35Well, I got less than an hour before the hand dies from lack of circulation.
07:39Oh, man.
07:41Okay.
07:43Just squeeze my hand of her.
07:44It's not too bad.
07:45Okay.
07:46You okay?
07:47Yeah.
07:49Oh, I'm fine.
07:51Just do her first.
07:51I'd really like to take a look at the arm, Mr. Carter.
07:54Yeah, when the kettle exploded in the kitchen, we both thought a bomb went off.
07:57I guess the water was too hot, or...?
08:00No, it wasn't water.
08:01It was just a cheap-ass wedding gift for my Uncle Benny.
08:04Everything the dude buys is a knockoff of a knockoff.
08:07Of a knockoff.
08:08These look like superficial partial thickness burns.
08:11Let's do a gentle irrigation with some cool water, and then we'll need to apply some sylvidine.
08:15And a suture kit for that lack.
08:18You okay?
08:19What's hurting?
08:20Hey, babe, you all right?
08:22Yeah, I'm sorry.
08:22I think the skin's just a little bit tender.
08:25Okay.
08:26Well, let's get you gowned and sutured and bandaged.
08:28I want to do an x-ray to make sure there's no glass that we missed and some basic blood and urine tests.
08:32Can I have a nurse help you in the bathroom?
08:33Oh, no, I'm okay.
08:34I can do it.
08:35Okay.
08:36And, uh, no more gifts from Uncle Benny.
08:39I was doing a little, uh, internet snooping on your shop.
08:43It's some beautiful furniture you make.
08:47No wonder demand is so high right now.
08:49I mean, those...
08:50Those Windsor chairs with the, uh, with the blonde sugar maple, you know?
08:55The mortise and tenon joints, that's impressive.
08:59Like a magic chair.
09:00Yeah.
09:02But I tell you, one thing that I can't really figure out
09:07is why a guy who's as talented as you are
09:10would want to get rid of one of your most important tools.
09:18It's better for everyone.
09:21For everyone?
09:22What do you mean when you say everyone?
09:24I'm a bad person.
09:27I'm gonna hurt someone.
09:30Have you hurt somebody before?
09:32No.
09:35Well, what makes you think you would now?
09:37I could control it before.
09:43Control what?
09:45I keep picturing the same thing over and over.
09:52Okay.
09:55Well, what is it that you keep on picturing?
09:59Wrapping my head around someone's throat.
10:03Killing them.
10:06And I was gonna do it.
10:09I was gonna hurt someone.
10:10No, I can't.
10:24Hey, crazy question.
10:25Do we have any glitter glue?
10:27Why, are you going to a slumber party we don't know about?
10:29No, I'm just getting some supplies for Cora
10:31so she can spruce the place up a little bit.
10:33How are you still single?
10:36Commitment issues.
10:38Excited to unpack that tomorrow night at your place.
10:41Sorry, what?
10:42She means poker night.
10:44It's tomorrow.
10:45You're hosting.
10:46Sorry, I can't do that, actually.
10:48I'm gonna have to rent check.
10:49What?
10:51Something came up.
10:52You can't bail on us.
10:53Your bad decisions at Poker Night
10:55paid for my manicures last month.
10:56I just can't.
10:57Okay?
10:58Okay, okay.
11:00Dr. Frost, this just came up from pathology for Cora Cooper.
11:06Whoa, whoa, whoa.
11:06This is for Cora Cooper.
11:08Are you sure?
11:09Yeah, that's what they said.
11:13She's not my daughter.
11:17How is this possible?
11:19You mentioned to Dr. Frost
11:20that you conceived Cora through IVF.
11:24You think there was a mix-up at the clinic?
11:25Well, it's possible.
11:27We've been in touch with them.
11:29It looks like 10 years ago,
11:32on the day Cora's embryo was transferred,
11:34there was one other woman who received an embryo,
11:37though hers didn't take.
11:40Are you saying that Cora is her biological child?
11:43We just don't know yet.
11:44We just don't know yet.
11:45These answers will take time.
11:47But if this woman is Cora's genetic parent,
11:51then there's a 25% chance she is a match for the stem cell transplant needed to save Cora's life.
11:57So, do we have your permission to contact her to see if she'll come in to get tested?
12:04So, you're saying that he's got OCD?
12:13Most people think that OCD is just about, you know, repetitive hand-watching, light-switch behavior.
12:21But at its heart are these intrusive thoughts, right, that compel people to behave a certain way.
12:28In Lionel's case, they revolve around hurting people.
12:31It's actually a very specific subset, which is harm OCD.
12:35Trust me, he's got all the hallmarks.
12:37That explains why he's not mentioned it to anybody.
12:40Well, it's a tough thing to admit to, right?
12:42Yeah.
12:42But, I mean, the lengths that he went to, cutting off his own hand, I mean, the guy didn't want to hurt anybody.
12:47Yeah.
12:48Right?
12:49We all have violent impulses, right?
12:52But we have the ability to filter them out.
12:55Poor guy thinks he's a killer and really just got a leaky valve.
13:02If only can we just show him the valve, right?
13:05Yeah.
13:06No, you know.
13:08But we just show him the busted part.
13:10Just like we do with broken bones, get him to understand that that's not who he really is, right?
13:18Any way you could keep this hand alive for a little bit longer?
13:23Yeah, I'll consult Lennox.
13:24I'd appreciate it, buddy.
13:25Sure.
13:25Just, uh, need to run something down.
13:29Of course.
13:29How much time do you think this will buy?
13:34Well, in a lab setting, a perfusion system has kept a limb viable for up to 24 hours.
13:39But given that this isn't a lab setting, and we're doing most of this on the fly, I'd say considerably less than that.
13:47Did you reattach any limbs while you're in Afghanistan?
13:50I mostly cut them off.
13:51It's hard to imagine anybody doing this to themselves on purpose.
13:59Maybe.
14:01But I can understand wanting to deny your own impulses.
14:05I spent most of my life doing that.
14:08Why do you think that is?
14:09I guess I didn't really understand the world, or how I was supposed to act, or what was acceptable, or cool, or kind.
14:23And to avoid making a mistake, I just didn't take any chances.
14:30And I'm starting to think that that stopped me from experiencing life fully.
14:35If I had a better self-control, I wouldn't be having a baby right now, so.
14:42Maybe losing control occasionally isn't the worst thing in the world.
14:50Sorry, Dr. Lennox, I wanted to.
14:53I was in the bathroom, collecting the urine sample from the woman who had the kettle accident.
14:59Mrs. Carter, I guess.
15:01Well, she'd asked for a second cup to use, and I didn't think anything of it.
15:05Until I went in there, and I found the original cup in the trash.
15:10Had this on it.
15:14You alright?
15:16Yeah, just...
15:17This is so weird.
15:19Miss Patrick, this is Vivian Cooper and Dr. Frost, who's running point on Cora's care.
15:25It's nice to meet you.
15:26Thank you so much for coming down here so quickly.
15:29It's a lot.
15:30No, of course.
15:31I...
15:32Um...
15:33Sorry, what happens now?
15:37Well, the first thing we need to do is a blood draw, which is right down the hole.
15:39Okay.
15:40And we should be able to get back the results within a couple hours.
15:44Is that her?
15:49Yes.
15:51Can I meet her?
15:53Well, I haven't told Cora about all this yet.
15:57I didn't want to upset her until we knew for sure.
16:01Oh.
16:02Why don't we do the blood test to start?
16:06Right, of course.
16:08It's just...
16:09Afterward, I really...
16:11Um...
16:12I would love to meet her.
16:17We don't even have to tell her who I am.
16:20I don't know.
16:22I'm sorry, but that might be my biological child in there, and she's sick.
16:29Please.
16:30Well, Dr. Ripley, you have a second?
16:42Uh, not exactly.
16:43Well, I was wondering if you've noticed anything off with Dr. Frost.
16:46What do you mean?
16:49Like he's acting kind of weird.
16:51You know?
16:52Cagey.
16:54He totally bailed on hosting Poker Night, and he's, like, dropping out of stuff randomly.
17:05I think it might be meth.
17:09Meth?
17:09Yeah.
17:10I've seen it before.
17:12Mm-hmm.
17:12Hey, Casey, um, Dr. Frost does not have a methamphetamine addiction.
17:18But he is acting weird.
17:21Yeah, maybe.
17:22Um, I need to go deal with something.
17:24Let's talk later.
17:29Hey, man, can I, uh, can I grab you for a sec?
17:32Yeah, what's up?
17:33Oh, admin.
17:34Uh, they can't seem to find your insurance info.
17:36Just need you to fill out a few forms.
17:37It's a pain, I know, but...
17:38No, it's fine.
17:40We're just waiting around.
17:40Mm-hmm.
17:48Faye, can we talk?
17:50Sure.
17:51Everything okay?
17:52Uh, just waiting on your lab results.
17:54But that's not why I came by.
17:58You got married recently, right?
18:00Almost seven months ago, but yeah.
18:04How's it going?
18:06Good.
18:07What do you mean?
18:08I guess I mean, um, how are you guys getting along?
18:13Sorry, why are you asking this?
18:19We found this in the trash.
18:21The red sticker on it.
18:25I'm sorry, I don't understand.
18:26What's that supposed to mean?
18:27We have signs up in the bathroom that say, if you're experiencing partner abuse or domestic violence, that you can place a sticker on your cup to notify us.
18:41But I didn't turn that one in.
18:43I understand.
18:44I'm wondering if you are considering asking us for help.
18:51I want to make sure everything's okay.
18:54And nothing you say to me is going to leave this room.
18:56I don't know.
19:00I'm sorry.
19:01I just said...
19:02Hey.
19:03Can we talk about the kettle?
19:06I told you it...
19:08It was an accident.
19:10It just exploded.
19:13But is that what happened?
19:15Did he hate you at then?
19:16It was an argument.
19:24We're both hot-tempered.
19:25I just don't want to get him in trouble.
19:28This isn't about getting anybody in trouble.
19:30This is about making sure you're safe.
19:32Please don't.
19:34We have resources we can provide.
19:36We have a social worker who can connect you to save housing.
19:40Please.
19:41Faye?
19:42Please.
19:43A little help in here.
19:45Please.
19:45She's losing consciousness.
19:46Let's get her on a monitor.
19:47Faye, can you hear me?
19:50Please don't.
19:55Faye, I'll give you an oxygen mask to help you breathe, okay?
19:58She's really diaphoretic.
19:59I'm going to need some tape.
20:00Here we go.
20:02Just breathe.
20:03We got you.
20:05Dr. Lennox, you need to see this.
20:08Oh, my God.
20:16Dr. Abari.
20:19Hey.
20:20You have a minute.
20:21You come to arrest me?
20:23Look, I got out a little heated this morning, and I apologize for that, but I'm wondering
20:28if I could ask for your help with something.
20:30Sure.
20:31What do you got?
20:32Under a bit of a time crunch.
20:33Can I explain on the way?
20:35Yeah.
20:35The bolus and blood seem to have helped.
20:38Vitals are stable.
20:39Tell Transpo she's ready to move to IR.
20:42Hey, her husband's in the waiting room.
20:44I've been holding him off, but he wants to know what's going on.
20:46He knows exactly what's going on.
20:48He beat the hell out of her.
20:51He may be next of kin, but the fact that we have to treat this prick like he's any other
20:54family member is absurd.
20:56I get that, but if we let on what we know, we would feign even more danger.
20:59Yeah, I get that.
21:11Is Faye okay?
21:11Your wife suffered a laceration to her spleen, causing her to hemorrhage slowly into her abdomen.
21:17We are doing something called a splenic artery embolization to stop the bleeding.
21:21But she's going to be okay?
21:23We hope so, yes.
21:25Okay.
21:26Thank God.
21:28Sorry, I'm a little confused, though.
21:30She was fine when I left what happened.
21:32Well, that's what we were hoping that you could help us with.
21:36Generally, it's the kind of injury that only occurs with blunt trauma, but Faye didn't mention
21:41anything like that.
21:42Any idea what might have happened?
21:47I mean, when the kettle exploded, she did fall.
21:50Hit the counter.
21:52In the chaos, we must have forgot to mention it.
21:54She fell.
21:56She fell.
21:57Right.
21:57So, that's all.
22:00Can't think of anything else?
22:01No.
22:03We're asking because we just want to make sure, you know, we have a clear picture and there's
22:07nothing we're missing.
22:08Right.
22:09Of course.
22:11Uh, yeah.
22:14Nothing else that I know of.
22:15All right, Lionel.
22:18We're going to get started.
22:20First, we're going to warm up the machine a bit.
22:24So, if you could tap your index fingers to your thumbs.
22:27I mean, with your right hand, of course.
22:28Colors represents the parts of the brain that are active.
22:37And your research is centered on this?
22:40Yeah.
22:40We compare what we're seeing in a given patient to a healthy brain, and the differences will
22:46help tell us what we're dealing with.
22:48Okay, but Dr. Charles has already diagnosed Mr. Blake.
22:52He just didn't believe it.
22:53Well, we're kind of conducting an experiment in repurposing the technology in an attempt
23:00to show Lionel, per your suggestion, his leaky valve.
23:05Okay, we're ready.
23:09Okay, Lionel, I want you to shut your eyes and picture standing right in front of you the
23:16person that you care about, that you love most in the world.
23:25Okay.
23:26Now, I want you to imagine taking your hands, wrapping them around their throat, and strangling
23:32them.
23:35Hey, Cora, decorating's coming along nicely.
23:52Right?
23:53Except I'm running out of blue marker.
23:56Oh, we can taste that.
23:57You didn't touch your lunch.
23:59I'm hungry.
24:01Well, you gotta eat.
24:02Keep your strength up, okay?
24:04I'll try.
24:05Cora, I'd like to introduce you to a friend of mine.
24:07This is Lily.
24:08She's shadowing me today.
24:10Hey.
24:12My zebra.
24:14Thanks.
24:14It's actually randomly my favorite animal.
24:18Hey, Cora, I think we should put your cannula back on, okay?
24:21Oxygen levels are dipping a little bit.
24:23I wanted to do this trip to Africa last summer, but we couldn't afford it, so my mom wrote
24:29an email to the zoo and convinced them to let me come and feed them.
24:32Sounds cool.
24:33Sounds cool.
24:34Well, she has a black streak in her hair.
24:40I've had it since I was a baby.
24:42It's pretty rare, I think.
24:44Yeah, no, I know.
24:45My mom had the exact same thing.
24:49You're my daughter.
24:53What?
24:53What are you doing?
24:54I think we should step out, maybe.
24:56She's my daughter.
24:56I'm sorry, but I'm sure of it.
25:03You are way out of line.
25:04Ladies.
25:04I didn't mean to say it.
25:06We don't even know if you are.
25:07We do know, and I know you can see it.
25:09Can we just calm down?
25:10I don't want her anywhere near my daughter.
25:12She's my daughter, too.
25:14I have rights.
25:14Is this crazy?
25:15I don't want this anymore.
25:17Let's wait for the marrow registry results.
25:19Stop her blood test.
25:19No, we're not stopping it.
25:21Then I'm going to call a lawyer.
25:22All right, it's enough.
25:23Look, I understand that emotions are running high and that this is a very unusual situation.
25:31I can't imagine what you're going through right now, and you either.
25:35You both must be reeling.
25:37So, Ms. Cooper, you can call a lawyer, and I promise you I would understand.
25:44As hard as this is, that's not the best thing for your daughter right now.
25:53Of course.
25:56Okay, look.
25:58There is no closing this Pandora's box.
26:02So, if you both care for Cora, we need to put her first.
26:07How are you doing after that ambulizer?
26:23Feeling a little shaky?
26:26No.
26:27I'm okay.
26:28Dr. Frost?
26:33Can that woman...
26:36Can she take me away from her mom?
26:43I wish I could tell you what was going to happen, Cora, but I can't.
26:48What I can tell you is that family has nothing to do with genetics or blood.
26:53It's about who loves you and who shows up.
27:01Is that what your parents were like?
27:06No.
27:07Actually, mine weren't always very good to me.
27:10They weren't always putting me first, you know?
27:18But your mom, she's nothing like that.
27:23All she does is think about you and how best to take care of you and that kind of love.
27:29She's going to be your mom, no matter what any test says.
27:38All right?
27:42I guess I'm just scared.
27:47I know.
27:50But hey.
27:50We're in this together, all right?
27:58I got you.
28:02This is a picture of your brain after we asked you to think of somebody you cared about.
28:10My sister?
28:11My sister.
28:12See this red area here?
28:13That's called the ventral tegmental area.
28:16It's the part of your brain that processes love and reward.
28:21And it's where you hold your personal values.
28:24You see how it's all lit up when you're thinking about your sister?
28:27Yeah.
28:28Okay, good.
28:29Now, this is a picture of your brain after we asked you to think about hurting her.
28:35That's the amygdala.
28:36It's where your brain processes fear.
28:38Okay, now, buddy.
28:39If you were somebody who enjoyed hurting people, your brain would not look like this after
28:45confiding with those triggers.
28:47Okay?
28:47It would, in fact, look like this.
28:50Because you'd be experiencing joy and pleasure in anticipation of hurting somebody.
28:56Now, the really cool part is to actually show you why this is happening.
29:01See this little area here?
29:03This is called your caudate nucleus.
29:07It's dark.
29:08Yeah, because yours isn't working.
29:10And that's all this is.
29:12It's what I've been trying to tell you.
29:13This little tiny part of your brain is malfunctioning.
29:16Maybe.
29:17I don't know.
29:17Buddy, look.
29:19This is you.
29:22It's the guy who deserves to be made whole again.
29:27Well, I know you feel unsafe, okay?
29:31And that's terrible.
29:33But we can fix that.
29:35Look, it's not going to happen overnight, okay?
29:38But I promise you, when we get to where we're going, you're going to want your hand back.
29:43So you're going to keep doing what you love doing.
29:45The problem is, buddy, is that we are up against it right now.
29:49All right, so in this moment, I just, I need you to trust me, okay?
29:55I need you to trust me, and I just, I need you to trust this science.
30:04Okay.
30:07Okay?
30:07How are you feeling?
30:15Groggy.
30:17A little sore.
30:18Uh, what happened?
30:20You had a lacerated spleen.
30:22We embolized the artery that was bleeding into your abdomen.
30:25You should be okay.
30:27But it could have killed you.
30:28There was a moment earlier today when you were alone in the bathroom.
30:35You had an impulse to reach out, ask for help.
30:40You should listen to that.
30:50You must think I'm so stupid for loving someone who could do this.
30:53I don't think that at all.
30:59It's just...
31:01He's not always like this.
31:07I believe you.
31:10But situations like this don't just get better.
31:13Not without help.
31:18I took this out of your bag.
31:20I put my number in it.
31:24It's under Katie with a C.
31:29Yeah, thanks.
31:33But really, I'm fine.
31:36It was just a mix-up.
31:42I just need it today.
31:45No, I don't care about the money.
31:47No, text me his number.
31:48I'll cut him a check today.
31:51It's really how this goes.
31:53Let me pull you back.
31:55Excuse me?
31:56I get that you might feel upset right now.
31:59That you might feel cheated.
32:01But that little girl in there is dying.
32:03And she's not going to spend whatever time she has left terrified
32:06that the only family she knows is about to get torn apart.
32:10You don't get it.
32:12I don't?
32:13No.
32:13I did IVF for years.
32:24So many times I got pregnant.
32:28But the embryo...
32:30My body couldn't keep it alive.
32:36And this happens...
32:41That this little girl is mine.
32:46I've already missed so much.
32:50So I can't just walk away.
32:52Look, infertility is cruel.
33:00We never get to know why one person gets lucky while the other one does it.
33:04I can imagine that in a situation like this,
33:07it is easy to feel like you've been robbed of something.
33:09And maybe you have.
33:11But...
33:12What?
33:15I don't know.
33:16Maybe this is the only way this could have happened.
33:19You having a kid.
33:21Maybe Cora wouldn't even be here if it weren't for the both of you.
33:25Okay, but either way,
33:26Cora is in a crisis right now.
33:29And I know
33:30that the only way to get through a crisis
33:32is to find a way to work together.
33:34What is it?
33:47Pathology.
33:48Your test results are back.
33:57Cora.
34:00Cora.
34:04What's wrong?
34:10Nothing's wrong, baby.
34:12It's good news.
34:14You and Miss Patrick,
34:16you're a stem cell match.
34:19Baby?
34:20Really, yeah.
34:22You're gonna be feeling a lot better very soon.
34:27You're gonna be okay, sweetie.
34:28You're gonna be okay.
34:34I feel so happy when she's here.
34:38She's my biological.
34:42Yeah.
34:46Where is she?
34:49Miss Patrick is getting ready
34:51to make her stem cell donation.
34:53And she thought it best
34:55for you two to have your space right now.
34:57Come on.
35:05Come on.
35:08Yeah.
35:10Hey.
35:12I'm headed out.
35:12I wanted to check on Lionel.
35:13How's he doing?
35:15Uh, you know,
35:15Dean's just, uh, finishing up now.
35:17Come in.
35:18Have a seat.
35:20He was able to keep the hand viable,
35:22so it looks like the reattachment's
35:24gonna be a success, you know?
35:28I'm glad to hear it.
35:30It's cool what you did back there.
35:32I haven't used FMR like that.
35:34Hey, look,
35:34I am not anti-innovation, okay?
35:36Far from it, trust me.
35:38But it just seems like
35:38every day we get hit
35:40with another technological advancement
35:42that further obliterates
35:43our need to connect as humans.
35:45You know, we might have gotten off
35:46on the wrong foot,
35:47but I enjoyed working with you today.
35:51Right back at you.
35:52Really.
35:53Theo, um,
35:57I've been thinking
35:58you cannot deny
36:01the potential
36:02of this technology, right?
36:05I mean, look at what happened today.
36:07And
36:07look,
36:10if you were willing
36:11to put people
36:13before technology,
36:15maybe there is a place
36:18for you
36:18in your research
36:19here at Gaffney.
36:22Hmm.
36:24What do you think?
36:25Yeah.
36:28It's this way.
36:29They'll just need you
36:30to change into a gown
36:31and then we'll get you
36:32to pre-op.
36:33And how long
36:34does the procedure take?
36:35Usually one or two hours.
36:37Okay.
36:38Lily,
36:38I just wanted to say
36:41thank you in person.
36:42It means
36:42it's everything.
36:46Of course.
36:48Um,
36:48I tried to get a zebra
36:51from the gift shop
36:52for Cora.
36:54All they had was a bear.
36:56Probably stupid.
36:57I don't even know
36:58if ten-year-olds
36:59like stuffed animals.
37:01I guess I don't really
37:03know that much
37:03about kids.
37:06She'll love it.
37:07I'm sorry
37:11about earlier.
37:13It wasn't
37:13my best moment.
37:15No,
37:16it wasn't.
37:18You know,
37:19Cora asked about you.
37:21She has questions
37:22I can't answer.
37:24Maybe we can
37:25have another conversation
37:27with the three of us
37:28later
37:28under better circumstances.
37:31Yeah?
37:33Yeah.
37:37Bubba's looking
37:40pretty good.
37:42It's too bad
37:42we're gonna have to
37:43kick you out of here soon.
37:44I made you something.
37:46Oh, yeah?
37:47What's that?
37:50That's me.
37:51That's you.
37:53You put me
37:53in the fishbowl?
37:54You said that
37:55we were in it together.
37:57That maybe you could
37:59hang it up
38:00in your house.
38:06You like it?
38:08Yeah.
38:10I love it.
38:12So,
38:13Faye,
38:13you got moved
38:13to the ICU?
38:15Mm-hmm.
38:19Look,
38:21you did everything
38:21you could.
38:23Right.
38:26Oh.
38:26What?
38:28I left my iPad
38:30in post-op.
38:31Want me to hold
38:31the elevator?
38:32I'll get the next one.
38:44Casey thinks
38:45you're on meth.
38:47What?
38:48Nurse Casey.
38:49She thinks you're
38:50acting weird
38:50because you're on meth.
38:52Oh.
38:53I'm not
38:53on meth.
38:55I know.
38:57But you are
38:58acting weird.
38:59I'm not trying
39:00to.
39:00I'm just
39:00tired, I guess.
39:06Okay.
39:14I got kicked
39:15out of my sublet.
39:17What's that?
39:18My apartment.
39:20I sublet it.
39:21And two days ago,
39:22the guy that I
39:23subletted from,
39:24decided to move
39:24back,
39:25kicked me out.
39:27So,
39:28you were right.
39:29I did sleep here
39:30last night
39:31because I don't
39:32have a place
39:33to live.
39:36That sucks,
39:37but can't you
39:38just get another
39:38apartment?
39:39It's not that
39:40simple.
39:41But if you need
39:41cash, I'm more
39:42than happy to know.
39:43It's not a money
39:43thing, really.
39:44It's a credit
39:45thing.
39:46I had to file
39:47bankruptcy to get
39:48out from under
39:48all the debts
39:49my parents racked up.
39:50So,
39:51that's why
39:52I always sublet.
39:53It's just hard
39:54to find one
39:55on short notice,
39:56so.
40:00Well,
40:01you might as well
40:02just come
40:02stay with me,
40:03then.
40:04Just until
40:04you find a place
40:05for me.
40:05I appreciate it.
40:06All right?
40:07I am fine.
40:08I'm at Sadie's
40:09half the time
40:09anyway.
40:13Okay,
40:13then.
40:15Okay.
40:16All right.
40:17All right.
40:17All right.
40:17All right.
40:19There's no
40:21meth in the
40:21apartment.
40:22I'll just keep
40:22doing it in the
40:22hospital.
40:23Right.
40:23I'll be all right.
40:24Yeah.
40:33Dr. Lennox.
40:35Oh, hey.
40:36Faye was moved
40:37to the ICU.
40:37I know.
40:38I was looking
40:38for you, actually.
40:40I just wanted
40:41to say thank you
40:42for saving her
40:43life.
40:43I really appreciate
40:44it.
40:46I know how much
40:46attention you paid
40:48to her.
40:53Well, I wish
40:54I could have
40:54done more.
40:55I know how much
41:01I could have
41:02to go.
41:02I know how much
41:03I could have
41:04to go.
41:04I know how much
41:05I could have
41:05to go.
41:06I know how much
41:06I could have
41:06to go.
41:07I know how much
41:07I could have
41:08to go.
41:08I know how much
41:09I could have
41:09to go.
41:09I know how much
41:10I could have
41:10to go.
41:11I know how much
41:11I could have
41:12to go.
41:12I know how much
41:13I could have
41:13to go.
41:14I know how much
41:14I could have
41:15to go.
41:15I know how much
41:16I could have
41:17to go.
41:17I know how much
41:17I could have
41:18to go.
41:19I know how much
41:19I could have
41:20to go.
