13:32the murder case was escalated to lancashire police's force major investigation team
13:40the inquiry was led by detective chief inspector john mcnamara
13:44the injuries keith thompson stained were extensive and horrific it's one of the worst attacks i've seen in my 23 plus years as a police officer
13:57detectives began by reviewing the timeline of events after uniformed officers arrived at the scene
14:03we were told that the offender is in the locality
14:06a suspect lee smith was found close to the scene with some apparent minor injuries so obviously
14:15that was highly suspicious of him having potentially been involved in the assault
14:19we'd had report earlier in the night of criminal damage so he was arrested at 4 47 for the damage
14:25then at 5 32 for the assault by 5 56 we had unfortunately been told that mr thompson passed away
14:33so at that point he was then further arrested on suspicion of murder
14:36the hammer swabs lee smith has an extensive criminal history between 1998 and 2023 he's got a raft of
14:49convictions for wounding for grievous bodily harm for assault occasion actually bodily harm for battery
14:56for resisting a constable for police assault and for kidnap obviously these are all serious offenses
15:02violence seems to be lee smith's default right hand done
15:11after retrieving dna samples from lee smith detectives moved to interview him
15:17it's key to interview a suspect quite early in an investigation
15:20they may be able to give us information which either rules them out or actually provides further
15:27lines of inquiry they do not have to say anything however that could have consequences
15:33ultimately if they do have an account they wish to give or they later down the line a court process
15:38have answers to give they may not be believed or that defense may be harmed because in effect they
15:44have not answered questions when they were given an opportunity to do so
15:46okay the recording has started today we're interviewing lee smith lee can you just tell me your full name
15:55please lee carl joseph smith is questioned with a solicitor present the reason that we are giving
16:03you this interview is for you if you want to do so to give us what we sometimes refer to as your side of
16:09the story and things that come out of this interview will play part of the ongoing enquiries to establish
16:16what and how keith has died so when you were arrested initially for the criminal damage you
16:24have been cautioned you've made a reply to that caution what what have i damaged i've been twatted now
16:32do you remember saying that the victims of the initial disturbance decided not to press charges
16:41so officers move on to question lee smith about the murder of keith thompson when you have been
16:47arrested for murder you've replied who have i murdered if you've got anything else you want to
16:52clarify in relation to that okay let's just talk briefly then through that timeline i know it's a few
17:00hours ago and a lot's happened but who were you with have you been with keith during that time
17:08i pointed out about injuries
17:14how have they occurred was it keith
17:20were you out and about at that time
17:25we know that we get the call from ambulance at just before four where were you at that time
17:31keith was located in a basement do you know where i mean have you been there
17:45you've been arrested near to the scene have to be chased by some officers were you trying to escape from
17:53them is there is there any reason for that is there anything that you do want to say at this point

18:14we were hoping to have got from the first interview an initial account from the suspect in relation to
18:20what they recall of the events of the night and the morning unfortunately he didn't answer any of
18:24the police questions he didn't give us an alibi a defense like self-defense lines of inquiry that we
18:31could have followed on his behalf with the only suspect refusing to talk to detectives with the
18:37forensic evidence they have gathered and the crime scene itself reveal who murdered keith thompson

19:0749 year old keith thompson was killed after a ruthless beating in a basement squat

19:19a suspect 39 year old lee smith was arrested and claimed he was attacked by the victim
19:24but in his first interview he refused to answer any questions pointed out about injuries
19:34was it keith is there anything that you do want to say no okay
19:44the post-mortem results are a vital element of any murder investigation
19:48they revealed the true extent of keith thompson's injuries keith had sadly sustained a number of
19:56injuries to his body and to his head which were indicative of a violent assault upon him
20:04massive head injuries broken ribs and broken mandible in two places on the left-hand side
20:10part of his jawbone was actually disconnected from the rest of the jaw and multiple facial
20:15injuries and general injuries all about his body really when you look at these injuries whilst
20:22them in themselves perhaps wouldn't have killed him what it does is show the intensity of the assault
20:29keith thompson did not die of natural causes keith's death was inflicted upon him by another individual
20:36in a repeated assault

20:55malcolm in its glory probably would have been a lovely seaside resort
21:00but now as with most english seaside towns there are areas of deprivation
21:08a lot of anti-social behavior unemployment drugs in particular the part of the town that we're going
21:14to today
21:26this is the basement
21:32it's actually not a residence probably would have been used as a coal bunker
21:35years ago it's just used as a squat for homeless to sleep in looking at the scene as an attack site
21:43very confined running away probably wouldn't have been an option his only egress route would have
21:48been up and down those stairs it must have been terrifying
21:57keith thompson lived in a house of multiple occupancy only meters away from the murder scene
22:02so this is where keith lived cc tv on front door the scene's only there so yeah all they've had to
22:09do is to leave his front door across the street and then he's at the basement yeah it's just dog's
22:13throw isn't it yeah so we're stood outside the victim's home address it's hmo so a house of multiple
22:20occupancy there's five premises in there we can see from the external view of the property that there is
22:26an external camera on an assessment inside there are internal cameras when detectives searched the hmo
22:35where keith thompson lived they discovered evidence of a second crime scene on the landing
22:41area outside his flat there was blood splattering and smudges on the handrail
22:51statements obtained from the witness and he's disclosed he knows both lee and keith and they've
22:59come into his flat to socialize and whilst they've been inside his flat lee and keith have ended up
23:06fighting with each other essentially um lee seems to have got the better of keith and he's been on top
23:15of him punching and kicking him this was a key breakthrough for the investigators on the night
23:22of the murder a neighbor witnessed the suspect fighting with keith thompson in the hmo the witness
23:28statement told us we have another incident in the hmo prior to when we believed the incident at the
23:35basement happened what it also did was suggest the suspect and the victim knew each other and were
23:41associates of each other as well as interviewing the witness at the hmo detectives went door to door
23:51in the hunt for further leads they located two people who witnessed the basement assault
23:58and reviewed their statements so these are two witness statements one from the person calling 999
24:06and the other who was with that witness both of which were in the basement
24:12the person called the ambulance she said it was dark two people have come down
24:18one she knows to be keith thompson the other one she doesn't know
24:21the other witness that was in there he noticed keith his face was bruised he looked like he'd had a
24:28beating before coming into the basement but then describes keith being dragged through the door
24:35by the mail and then he describes him as knocking him about from wall to wall
24:42punching him kicking him kneeing him stamping on him all over his body
24:50really aggressive for what he says is about 15 minutes states that keith wasn't moving
24:56he describes him as a raging ball on a rampage and was worried for his own safety
25:05the person called the ambulance describes the male who's assaulting keith as a lunatic pointing at
25:10her and the other witness and threatening him if he dies i will kill you too it's not the first time
25:17she goes on to say that the males removed keith's trainers and told her to go with him
25:23to sell some trainers she didn't want to refuse because she was scared of him
25:28she said when she's left she hasn't checked keith physically but she could see he really wasn't well
25:35them two have left walked down the back alley where they've seen two other males and asked
25:41them if they want to buy a pair of trainers whilst this is ongoing and the male is preoccupied with
25:47these two other males she's left returned back to the basement alone she's seen keith still on the
25:54floor slumped with his back against the door she checked him for a pulse she's felt something faint
26:00but he wasn't responding she's told the other witness that they need to leave they've gone out
26:06where they called the ambulance as well as describing the violent attack the witness also provided a
26:12description of the suspect she describes the one doing the assaulting on keith as being dark skinned
26:20tall and slim with ears that stood out of it wearing a hoodie with a red or black hood and skinny jeans
26:30the witness testimony is described in detail the attack on the victim movements and descriptions of the
26:37offender the witness was terrified having a witness who can tell those 12 members of the jury
26:43how they felt at the time is really really impactive and key to help them understand what occurred when
26:49they're making the decision whether someone is innocent or guilty the information from the witnesses
26:57meant detectives could question lee smith on two separate incidents
27:01the initial altercation in the hmo
27:04and the subsequent assault in the basement across the road
27:10we're going to be talking about some people who have provided us with accounts and statements
27:17detectives start with a fight witnessed by a resident of the hmo
27:22one of the flats the gentleman who lives in that flat he's opened the door so like midnight time and
27:30you and keith have been there are you are you drunk are you intoxicated once you're inside he describes
27:39that you were both wrestling on the floor that he was on top of keith come chin up has that happened
27:45he says that keith had a cool ball in a sock remember that he's described that you took possession of that you snatched it off keith
28:02is that because she was you were being attacked by him he didn't say why they were fighting and that not one gaffety you've you've hooked and seem to have made up
28:14as lee smith offers no response the officers begin to question him about the witness statements from the basement assault
28:24we've spoken to she was there when the mail and keith have prevented
28:36we'll say that the first time the mail hits keith that it was so fast she doesn't think keith
28:44talked or responded again
28:46she says that she saw the male's elbow go towards keith
28:53she heard a whack she thinks that at that point keith has fallen
28:58to the floor the mail has kicked in and stamped on keith while he's on the floor
29:04do you remember this to say that the mail has kicked keith about on five separate occasions over a period of 10 minutes

29:54suspects heard the witness evidence he still declined to answer any questions
30:01it is not unusual we often deal with significant inquiries where suspects never speak to us throughout
30:06the entire process
30:15having considered the witnesses testimonies lee smith decided to give a prepared statement in response
30:24hi lee smith wish this statement stands my evidence from this interview
30:29on friday 27th september keith and i spent the day together
30:34i recall hearing a commotion and i've run around the corner where i've witnessed a male who was stood
30:39by a black car assaulting keith as i shouted for the mail to get off keith he jumped into the car and left
30:46as a result of this attack keith sustained some nasty facial injuries there was blood on his face
30:53according to lee smith keith thompson sustained facial injuries prior to the hmo altercation and basement assault
31:00he also gave his version of what happened during the fight in the hmo
31:07before midnight keith and i had been in and out
31:11flat
31:12whilst in an intoxicated state keith and has started attacking me with a pool ball in a sock
31:18keith struck me several times to the head area with this item
31:22whilst also punching me with his free hand
31:24in self-defense i accept punching keith no more than three times there were no kicks
31:30following this incident i sustained wounds lumps and bumps to my head both keith and i bled as a result
31:37following this incident we hooked and reconciled
31:39it's likely that i will have both mine and keith's blood on my clothing
31:46smith has admitted to fighting with keith thompson in the hmo
31:51but what will he say about the attack in the basement
31:54i have been to the basement on previous occasions
31:58i wish to add that visibility in this basement especially at night is practically non-existent with no artificial lighting
32:03i'm not the person responsible for assaulting my girlfriend keith in the manner alleged this is a case of mistaken identity
32:12i deny any intention to kill or cause keith grievous bodily harm
32:16can you confirm that's your signature and you're happy with those instructions
32:20yeah i'm going to pass that to the officers to consider
32:26on occasion suspects will give us an excuse for the behavior or a defense
32:32and actually will also on occasion tell us the truth and it's our job to work through that
32:36information and test it using cctv using telephony using witnesses to try and pull it all together and
32:43understand exactly what's happened the key evidence that could back up or refute smith's statement was
32:51the cctv footage from within the hmo so this footage is from about quarter past 10 in the evening
32:58the first of smith's claims was that keith thompson was assaulted by someone else earlier in the evening
33:05and left with facial injuries keith goes to the laundry room he's doing something with the washing
33:11machine before he turns around and goes back upstairs and he seems absolutely fine there's no visible injuries
33:18an hour later cctv showed lee smith entering the flat belonging to the witness of the hmo fight
33:30sure while later just coming up the stairs he's keith
33:32again no facial injuries no and both of them enter the witness's flat based on what the witness says
33:42this is where keith sustains the first assault
33:46this is a little bit later we can just see there that keith has left the flat followed by lee smith
33:58and you see at this point now keith is struggling to walk he now has quite visible facial injuries
34:04he's got blood all over his mouth lee will then leave
34:08and he starts to lean on that banister rail which is probably why we've got blood splatter on that

34:19what we start to see is for the next couple of hours keith i think he's struggling to get into his flat
34:26i don't think he can operate the keypad on the door to to get into his flat
34:31and you see he's not in a good way here is he no to the extent where eventually he goes to sleep
34:41on the landing outside his flat
34:48lee smith gave us in his statement that keith was assaulted and received facial injuries prior to
34:55entering that witness's flat cctv does not show the injuries as he described when he comes out an
35:04hour later he's clearly significantly injured he's struggling to walk he's struggling to climb the
35:10stairs he has blood around his mouth at one point his forehead the cctv footage corroborated the hmo
35:19witnesses statement and showed part of lee smith's account to be false but how will detectives prove
35:26he is responsible for murder
35:36in lancashire 49 year old keith thompson has been brutally murdered
35:40a suspect 39 year old lee smith was arrested close to the scenes
35:53witnesses described the suspect brutally beating the victim in a basement squat he described keith
35:58being dragged by the mail punching him kicking him kneeing him but lee smith claimed it was a case
36:04of mistaken identity visibility in this basement is practically non-existent i'm not the person
36:10responsible for assaulting my good friend keith in the manner alleged keith has left all about lee smith
36:17cctv showed the pair together on the night of the murder keith is struggling to walk got blood
36:23all over his mouth but the key question for detectives was whether the cctv could corroborate
36:30the witness accounts he's not in a good way here is he no
36:34so it's now a good hour on and lee returns
36:44as footage goes on here you do see elements of aggression from smith towards thompson
36:51it's around 10 minutes later they both leave keith is quite clearly bleeding from the nose
36:59he's got the tissues rammed in his nose it's almost like legal for keith with that pole
37:07both leave the hmo lee is first followed by keith at this point there as you go down
37:14the steps all you need to do is you cross the road it'll take you into the alleyway that takes you to
37:18the basement just in the top left-hand corner there you can see the entrance to where the basement is
37:26given that we know that lee and keith have just crossed the road you would expect them to carry
37:32on down this alleyway you'll just see the movements of some feet there
37:36that's lee smith entering the basement and then the movements of a second person which is keith
37:48so in effect that's the last time we see keith alive
37:52based on the account given to us by the witness who was in the basement around half an hour before
37:57she called the ambulance she left the basement with the suspect consistent with what the witness says
38:04around 25 past three we're able to see two figures leave the basement the one on the left the clothing
38:12is similar to that one by lee smith the one on the right is the witness they turn right down a nearby
38:20alleyway where we then see that there is in a transaction the suspect lee smith is captured on
38:26doorbell footage he's with the witness who calls 999 and they meet up with two other individuals
38:32her witness account says lee smith sells the trainers that are belonging to the victim
38:38once the transaction with the trainers has finished lee smith walks off with the two gentlemen who've
38:43purchased the trainers he's almost bouncing down the street like tigger he seems to be overjoyed and in
38:49very good spirits meanwhile the witness who called 999 she makes her way back to the basement
38:57consistent with her witness account she's within the basement for no more than five minutes it then
39:03shows her leaving with the other eyewitness they both walked through the car park where we then know
39:10that the call to 999 is made cctv corroborates what the main witness was telling us
39:19when the witnesses tell us only two people came into that basement we can say based on the cctv
39:25that that is keith and lee and that's the last time we see keith alive it completely undermines
39:34the suspect's account that is a case of mistaken identity
39:39having built the cctv timeline of events from the day of the murder detectives believed they had proof
39:45that lee smith was in the basement with keith thompson during the attack
39:49with this damning evidence detective challenged smith one final time
40:02so in relation to a prepared statement you said that you have been in the basement on previous occasions
40:10you talk about the visibility in the basement is practically non-existent
40:15what we do know from what tells us is the male who has assaulted keith in the basement she is then left with
40:24that same male and she's been out on the street
40:31what's the visibility like out on on the street what's the visibility like when you were with with
