Susan Gritton, born on August 31, 1965 in Reigate, Surrey, is an English operatic soprano. She studied Botany at the University of Oxford and the University of London before embarking on her musical career. Her early inspiration came from Lucia Popp's performance on The Cunning Little Vixen conducted by Charles Mackerras. Gritton won the 1994 Kathleen Ferrier Award. She has since performed leading roles in operas ranging from Handel and Mozart to Britten, Janáček, and Strauss. Notable performances include Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes at La Scala, Sydney, and Tokyo; Blanche in Dialogues des Carmélites at the Bavarian State Opera; and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at the Bolshoi, Montreal Opera, and Scottish Opera. Gritton has also recorded prolifically for labels such as Chandos, Hyperion, Deutsche Grammophon, EMI, Decca, Philips, and Collins Classics, earning a Grammy nomination along the way.
