I do like the author’s writing though, minus the prolonged my-dad-gave-me-abandonment-issues that goes on too long. I like the lovely mood she creates on the Christmas tree farm in particular. ...more

There is a lot of baking in this, and while I liked some of it, none of it really crossed over into food porn in its descriptions or appreciation. Also, the repeated use of the word “pastry” is debatable (most cookies) or just plain wrong (brownies). And the first cookie she comes up with for the contest sounded much better than the basic shortbread with chocolate, sea salt, and nuts they ended up going with! ...more

As is, she comes off as kinda bumbling and it’s hard to get invested in her relationship with her husband. It feels like a cozy mystery, without the cozy or the charm.
