04:12Paul Tazewell is the first African-American man to win an Oscar for best costume design.
04:27On top of, like, all his other accolades, because he's been really running these costume design
04:32Broadway streets since the 90s, so, you know, just in the presence of an icon, no big deal.
04:37You will be creating an avant-garde look based on the themes of the upcoming movie, Wicked
04:43for Good.
04:45To help inspire you, you are getting a sneak peek.

05:36Wicked focuses on the power of friendship, marginalization of people that are different, and also self-empowerment.
05:45So it's on you, hopefully, to take that inspiration and create it in your own way and reimagine the idea of Oz.

06:21So not only did you get a special look at the film, you also get this fabulous special look
06:25at the costumes from the film, which is incredible.
06:40And you're going to get to talk to R.I.
06:43which is incredible and you're going to get to talk directly with the man who made it all come
06:48to life what you see before you is elphaba and glinda for elphaba i leaned into all that was
06:55organic i was influenced by mycelia bark the underside of mushrooms speechless with glinda
07:04it's all that is artificial all that is sparkly and beautiful i then wanted to really establish
07:11that idea of the iridescent bubble swirls and those things that are whimsical and pink and green
07:18define what the world of wicked is think about this idea taking the inspiration of wicked for good
07:22but still avant-garde and whatever that means to you and your brand and your work still needs to be
07:28fashion it's still a runway push it really hard you guys go sketch and we'll come around
07:34this is my challenge i'm good at avant-garde good luck at the designers good luck hi i'm glinda
07:46i'm thinking about doing a head-to-toe pink beaded bodysuit with gloves and do a beautiful cape of
07:54our gants out amazing well make sure that you're also thinking about avant-garde like something you've
07:59never seen before because like a pink bodysuit is fabulous but like jennifer lopez literally wear
08:04that every single night and a flower cape valentino's made for like 20 years so push it more i'm not
08:11worried at all i hope my win last week can carry me through this challenge and into the finale my
08:16biggest competition is my brother and i feel like i finally catch up up to him the judges really are
08:22going to see what antonio strata is capable of i wanted to tap more into the nature side so i thought
08:28about a beautiful tree nature has no linear lines absolutely but remember you know still want that
08:35fashion moment i'm trying to use the design style that i discovered for myself sophisticated streetwear
08:42and push it to avant-garde the pressure is turned up to 5 000 and i really really really want to make
08:51it to the finale so i'm determined to deliver wicked for good is a movie about friendship being torn
08:58apart and i kind of want to create a fabric that's kind of like peeling off or being torn apart i
09:04really want it to be crazy but in a good way i mean what i'm seeing is really exciting huge fan of
09:10texture also like your work is some you know very quiet sometimes i think this has to be the fantasy yes
09:16right they really agree with christian my work it's very quiet because i think that there is beauty
09:24in simplicity but avant-garde should not be quiet i love to play with restraint a lot of elphaba's
09:32journey she's restraining herself because of her skin growing up i was a little queer kid and i didn't
09:40know really how to express myself and so when i saw wicked that did help me like feel comfortable on my own
09:45skin and yeah it really means a lot to me oh i'm obsessed and so i want to play with this beautiful
09:53crystal overlay off the shoulders just it's flowing down it's just beautiful fabric you did do the first
10:02challenge where you had a glove through your giant wind cape and that standing still might not be enough
10:10this needs to be incredible which you above all people can do avant-garde is my bread and butter
10:19i think that i could do a hybrid of what i've done before but these decisions are the ones that are going
10:24to push me into the finale so i gotta make the right decisions it's a lot of pressure
10:28i have a really strong connection with elphaba i want to create this really amazing avant-garde coat
10:37dress with really huge hips i don't know if avant-garde is in jesus wheelhouse because he makes a lot of
10:45beautiful dresses but a beautiful dress is not avant-garde then i want to mold the collar into around the neck
10:53and into a hat i mean the silhouette of the dress is something that we've seen before it's literally
10:59exactly the same i don't know what he's thinking this challenge might be jesus downfall i got this
11:10and we're back this is probably the most important shop of the season five of you left two of you go home
11:15on this challenge fabric is so important 30 minutes thousand dollars to shop i love money and
11:22i love spending other people's money ready go on your broomsticks
11:32i have been eyeing this crystal fabric and i find this beautiful green satin my ritual plan was in
11:40silver because of glinda's shoes but that crystal fabric is more of a green tone so like green
11:47is just a natural choice bj all this red is for you a lot of your budgets going to this one fabric
11:54setting myself apart from other designers is a strategy that i've used for the entire competition
12:00because you need to have a unique point of view all gonna be red yes the whole thing yes very powerful
12:07it's a risk to use red because i know that this is not the usual colors that you can associate with
12:12the movie but no risk no reward can you see your sketch pj no i don't know yet what i'm making i just
12:21want to see what you sketch i don't know yet what i'm making you don't have to show him i like that

17:50designers vijia has always seen us as frenemies but she's pushed me way too far i don't know if it's
17:57her strategy to make it to the top because i truly have no idea why she's still in this competition

18:07hi everybody christian there's not that much done
18:14i was gonna do a jumpsuit i kind of had a nightmare that j-lo sent me home so i changed my mind i'm not
18:20doing a cave it's almost like a shawl but i want to make it big and i want to make my own flowers
18:25big it has to be huge focus on this wow moment piece you need a flower cocoon flower cocoon bubble
18:34let me write that down how do you spell cocoon cocoon i don't know c c-a-c-o-o-n
18:46this is uh one of alphaba's friends from the forest tree creature yes this is really cool it was
18:52really hard to find texture and the right color of trees and moss i don't think you should go to
19:00costume-esque like a tree what's going to make you stand out knowing that i could have gone home in
19:06the last challenge is shaking my confidence i'm worried about my look not standing out in
19:14the room full of glitter sparkle and 3d definition i'm concerned who is she lady godiva so you're
19:23sticking with your plan like you're not gonna see the body at all yeah like you're covering her up in
19:28green even if it was just a small amount into a v or something you know i could plunge this down and
19:35really get it close to the body i think so i don't want them to be like this just isn't enough
19:42throughout this competition i have had to tone it down because you know my sentiments for fashion
19:47is really loud and bananas but this challenge is my opportunity to really turn what i'm good at
19:55up to 100. this is that one challenge you could push it even just a little bit more okay
20:00i don't want it to kind of look like what i did for unconventional you know the gown i want to make
20:06her a little more sexy um i think you can do all this i've just met me i know that's a lot of work
20:12mm i can handle it i need to send her home you really yeah i guess what did you just say vj just
20:18killed the vibe not too long ago she she's one of those i am sad because there's a lot of assumptions
20:26that i'm steering the pot one of the things that i learned in this competition is that you got to
20:30be very careful because people just really create drama out of nothing vj the room is very frazzled
20:38about you today i know i really don't know why it just feels so weird because they they thought that
20:44i should that i should got eliminated last challenge i don't know alphaba is a person that kind of like
20:53being rejected for who she is and you know it's like yeah you know it's like i felt rejection so
20:59many times and it's not that easy it's kind of like i kind of relate to that character as a trans
21:04woman being rejected being said no a lot of times but it's like no matter how hard it is
21:14i understand trust me i was an out little gay boy on when i was on this yeah in 2008 yeah it was
21:21rough it wasn't fun yeah but you're here and there's so many allies in the world and people
21:25are gonna be so inspired by you there are things about me that people don't understand as an immigrant
21:32woman as a trans woman and as a fierce competitor but those are the things that i like about me i see
21:40my uniqueness as a special power and i want to channel all of that into this design you get to create
21:47and show people what you can do and so be proud of yourself
22:03a little trepidatious about them being like it's too similar to the first one but it's a totally
22:11different like headpiece totally different yeah there's not a lot of time to pivot and pivoting
22:19last week hurt a lot but i'm hoping that i kill it one stumble could let me fall out of this competition

22:29hello designers wow what an honor oh my god oscar winner i have never had an opportunity to have my
22:47work critiqued by an oscar winner how are you it's a pleasure so this is this is it definitely avant-garde and
22:58it would be great to understand direction so that it doesn't feel random okay i'll do that it needs
23:05to be intentional yeah my worry is that are they gonna get it are they gonna see wicked the face of
23:12your model is open and how does it relate to the green skin i think it could be kind of cool if all of
23:19her face was covered too well that's what i was wondering as well and i think that it would also

23:30majesty thank you tell me about your design so originally when we spoke i wanted to do a cat
23:40suit i remember christian's like oh jaylo's done that and i'm like you know what right right right
23:43i'm gonna do the most beautiful evening gown i've ever made and i'm adding the green heart because
23:50it's a special place for my alphabet which is my twin brother
23:54okay we've seen many evening dresses how is this an avant-garde statement because this poppy flower
24:05that's on the floor it's gonna be her flower cocoon kind of like wings
24:13pushing your silhouette is the direction that i would suggest yeah really make it something we've
24:18never seen before i mean that was fueling almost all of my decisions when i was designing wicked so
24:23how can you take us to that next level this is my interpretation of her hat right so i want the
24:30point to be dramatic like avant-garde and i wanted to do a 3d heart because you know my brother's doing
24:36green and i mixed the pink in it the twins obviously are helping each other but they're not helping each
24:44other editing the look if i'm jesus i will tell antonio right now to get rid of that ugly flower
24:55it represents the love that she will forever in her life have for glenda wonderful it touches my
25:01heart there may be strengths in what you have already that if you focus on that and make that
25:06really beautiful then you really won't lead to anything else where i'm at in my process is getting
25:11the moss effect full throttle going what i see currently are silhouettes that in and themselves
25:20are interesting it's how do you keep all of it talking to each other talking to each other
25:27i like balanius but it doesn't read avant-garde it reads street wear there's a lot at stake because
25:34two people are gonna go so girl go big push yourself beyond your comfort zone that's what avant-garde is

28:08actress producer fashion diva and wicked fan tyra banks the banks herself miss ty ty bra banks ah let's start
28:22the show i love my love she was morphing into the dress and the dress is morphing into the hat
28:36it's gorge stunning my vision has come to life to perfection such an iconic moment uva gorge
28:53i've accomplished everything i wanted to accomplish for this look she looks so so elegant
29:00and so avant-garde it's making me feel so proud of myself
29:10i'm happy seeing this green goddess walk down the runway my look does not have sparkle
29:16it does not have that much volume but it's me definitely me and i'm obsessed
29:21i am hopeful that it's still enough to get me to the finale
29:30seeing my look walk on the runway i feel the spiral detail is so beautiful and the movement
29:38it's so powerful i mean the color is so dramatic and i'm really really happy with the outcome of the
29:57just fly down the runway it's sparkling under the light the lines are gorgeous it looks expensive it
30:04looks unique it looks so avant-garde and i think that i did myself so proud today

30:32a model i really wanted to just create something very powerful i wanted to do a heart to incorporate
30:40the paint of antonio's fabric because to me it represents the love that alphaba has for glinda
30:47but for me is the love that i have for my twin brother avant-garde means being innovative
30:54being experimental and that all came through it really is pushing the boundaries

31:12now the shoes came out really draggy to me but you know what this is a runway look this is the
31:20avant-garde moment when you can be outrageous go ahead nina first and she's going to photograph
31:26it no it's going to get me first because i'm going to get it right off the red carpet oh no we're
31:30going to get it oh no no no no no baby we get it i get it first man it depends on your celebrity
31:36sorry we know who my celebrity is all right nina came back feisty tonight yes i know that's what you
31:42say every time i come here whatever hey zeus i don't see two days i see two months yes i did love
31:50the look it came out and i was like wow the sparkles how you place them all i don't know it just gives
31:56it this kind of texture in a way it's divine thank you so much thank you okay antonio let's get your
32:03model out i knew that i was going to do a pink dress inspired by glinda and what really came to my mind
32:11is the poppy flower in the movie i love the dress i think the dress is beautiful does it read to me
32:17immediately wicked no i'm seeing a little bit more vegas the construction on the actual dress is really
32:24beautiful let's talk about the back because that's what i'm most troubled with that's a disaster and it
32:31is not defying gravity it's bad tell the truth it's saving the devil it's it's it's it's a it's like a
32:39bad pinata i know that deep inside you know this is catastrophic antonio i know that deep inside you know
32:51this is catastrophic the back of the dress looks really unfinished i see all your seam works it is
32:59a bit messy from the back but i do love the volume this brought me back i feel like to the beginning
33:06so even though i was rising to the top i feel like i'm back to square one so i'm shutting down
33:12down um i think the dress is beautiful and i actually like the flower i want it you can have
33:22it tyra thank you antonio hi vj hi heidi let's bring out your model wicked for good is about friendship
33:30being torn apart so i bought red silk and i literally shredded it shredded it apart and paul
33:37mentioned that one of the most important design elements for wicked is the spiral the deconstruction
33:45of wrapping that boning and making it look shredded looks fantastic the shoe is spectacular
33:54kind of took my breath away there was a lot of creativity to it i really loved it i think it's
34:00beautiful i think it's avant-garde and then the shoe looks clunky does it read wicked to me no the
34:06red totally threw me off had this been in green or black you could have told the same story and it
34:13would have made more sense for the movie but i do think that you did make something really interesting
34:19i used to teach branding and there are certain things with branding that are non-negotiables
34:24and one of those is color so for me that's like a big miss like a huge miss thank you vj thank you
34:32thank you so much okay ethan let's bring out your model this could have easily been
34:37a fifty thousand dollar couture dress and you ruined it with those underwear that is one of
34:43my biggest pet peeves on the red carpet when it's the wrong underwear but it's fab i love the addition
34:51of the ostrich feathers it also is alphaba with the cape and the end of the first movie when glinda
34:57threw that cloak around her and she flew off i think you did an incredible job it's gorge i mean
35:02you definitely took a risk by hiding her face because it could have been like they either hate
35:07it or love it i happen to love it you know it's like what i like the most about your work is when
35:14you play with these opposites right so here is a sense of modesty but at the same time of sexiness
35:23i was just blown away i think it's very stunning this is unique this is special thank you ethan
35:30thank you all so much you can leave the runway thank you baby okay bolania let's bring out your
35:35avant-garde look paul was explaining his inspiration he went to nature to see all the textures and the
35:43colors and i was inspired deeply because i'm a plant person but this is avant-garde i had to go a
35:49little bit bigger i'm so torn here i love the gouches however i don't know about that tail it's giving
35:56me a little crocodile tail and it's not even even so there's yeah that that speaks to nature and the
36:02unevenness in nature it's supposed to be representative does it give you a little crocodile alligator tail
36:08to me personally no it doesn't i love it i think there's different levels of avant-garde right there's
36:14avant-garde couture and there's avant-garde street fashion i think it's absolutely stunning my issue is
36:21everybody else took a chance and i think this was pretty safe in your opinion what you've seen so far
36:28that's not helping you babe really you don't think this is you i think i'm uncomfortable putting
36:34this on the right i love it but this is to me this is like big well you're gonna have to be
36:38uncomfortable a lot in this business that's the name of the game fashion is all about the new
36:46it's safe telania be quiet i have never yelled at a girl like this before i was rooted for you
36:53we were all rooted for you god is it really that serious oh bitch it is that was iconic now let me
37:00critique you seriously i actually agree with tyra rick owens is considered to be one of the greatest
37:06avant-garde designers of our generation and for me this is what that feels like i do think it's
37:12avant-garde and i do think it's really beautiful it's the thing of not being able to take the critiques
