00:00:00Two months later, Paul made his first title defense against world-ranked Robin Blake.
00:00:06Again, Jimmy Paul's ring skills took their toll, and he stopped Rockin' Robin in round 14.
00:00:15Tonight, Jimmy Paul's quest for recognition continues.
00:00:18His title is on the line for the second time, and he'll need every weapon in his boxing arsenal to retain the belt.
00:00:24To Benito Perez enters tonight's bout for 24 knockouts in 31 fights, 11 in the first round.
00:00:34His only loss came at the hands of Hector Macho Camacho in April of 1983, and Perez pushed the Macho Man to a close 10-round decision.
00:00:45Perez has not lost since, knocking out three of his last six opponents.
00:00:49There's nothing he liked better than to add Jimmy Paul to his knockout list.
00:00:54Well, I'm going to fight this guy round by round, but I don't really want to go for a decision.
00:01:01I want to go for KO, and I want to fight round by round, but at the same time, if I hurt this guy, I'm really going to go after him.
00:01:09I don't want the judges to decision this far from him.
00:01:15They say that Jimmy Paul is a real technician, a real craftsman.
00:01:18He looks for a weakness in an opponent.
00:01:21Is he going to find a weakness in you?
00:01:22I think everybody has weakness.
00:01:26Yeah, I got weakness.
00:01:27He got weakness, too.
00:01:28So we'll be looking for the same thing, you know.
00:01:30And when I see the weakness, I'm going to jump on it, too, you know.
00:01:33So I think we'll both be looking for the same thing.
00:01:37And people think he's a master boxer, but they're going to see a master puncher and a master boxer.
00:01:42So I think they're going to see the master of the master here tonight.
00:01:46Well, Cubanita, you gave Hector Camacho his toughest fight.
00:01:49We did the broadcast.
00:01:51It was a booed decision here.
00:01:52How do you compare Camacho with Jimmy Paul?
00:01:54Well, they're both good fighters.
00:01:57They both got a lot of talent, you know.
00:01:59They know boxing.
00:02:02They know what they're doing.
00:02:04I think Jimmy Paul is more like a flat-footer.
00:02:07Camachos move a lot, and that's what makes it harder for Camachos.
00:02:09He's softball, and he moves a lot.
00:02:11So it's hard to get a clean shot on Camacho.
00:02:13It is hard to get a clean shot also on Jimmy Paul.
00:02:15But he's a more stationary target, you know.
00:02:17You have more to shoot on, you know.
00:02:20So it's like when you go after him, he's going to be there, you know.
00:02:24He's not going to be running away and, you know, monkeying around and spinning you around.
00:02:27But they're both good fighters, and I'm looking forward to meet Jimmy Paul now.
00:02:34Well, since both of us do have the big right hand,
00:02:36I think that what I will be doing is try to take Perez's right hand away from him.
00:02:41And I think other than that, I don't think that I should have much of a problem
00:02:43in figuring out his other style.
00:02:45Now, Jimmy, I want to know, how are you going to take his right hand away from him?
00:02:48You know, I may learn something.
00:02:49What are you going to do, Jimmy?
00:02:50I might have to take this shoulder I got and stick it up.
00:02:53Oh, okay.
00:02:54Jimmy, also, you know, everybody talks about Hector Camacho gets a lot of publicity,
00:02:58comes in with the sequined outfits, and Rambles got the pit bulldogs and the snakes.
00:03:03You're a quiet guy, Jimmy.
00:03:04Do you think that takes anything away from you?
00:03:06Should you be more outspoken or maybe even higher publicity agent?
00:03:09What do you think about that?
00:03:10Well, I thought about it a few times, about being more open and talking more.
00:03:15But I really don't have a, you know, a gimmick or nothing.
00:03:18I just have Jimmy Paul.
00:03:19And I think that one day when it does hit the lights
00:03:22and I become the undisputed lightweight champion, that'll speak for it all.
00:03:26I think Marvin Hagler went through that same situation
00:03:28and quite a few other fans.
00:03:31Well, Tim Ryan here at ringside again with marvelous Marvin Hagler
00:03:37and Gil Clancy as we await the battle between Jimmy Paul and Kubanito Perez.
00:03:43And, gentlemen, in this bout, we've got an experienced champion in Jimmy Paul
00:03:47who has a lot of poise and confidence.
00:03:50Marvelous, you know about being a champion.
00:03:52What do you think about Paul in this matchup?
00:03:54Well, I think he's going to have his hands full
00:03:55because this kid here really seems very hungry to challenge what I'm talking about.
00:03:59And I'm looking for an exciting fight.
00:04:01And like I said, even with the Canizales fight,
00:04:04it can almost be a repeat and it could be an upset.
00:04:07Well, Kubanito Perez, Gil, as you pointed out,
00:04:09when you talked to him as a young man we're familiar with,
00:04:11we did that fight against Hector Camacho.
00:04:12And some people thought he even won the fight.
00:04:15It was certainly a very close decision.
00:04:16He is a guy that's been on the doorstep
00:04:18and is certainly qualified to be here in a title fight.
00:04:22Well, Tim, he's only lost one fight, and that was the Hector Camacho.
00:04:25It was a close fight.
00:04:27Most of the experts around here don't seem to give him much of a chance,
00:04:30but I certainly do.
00:04:31He's got a great record, 33-1, and we know he can punch.
00:04:34And I know that Jimmy Paul's been on the deck a few times.
00:04:37So I'm looking for an exciting fight.
00:04:38All right, it's Paul and Perez,
00:04:40and the boxers are making their entrance here at the Brendan Byrne Arena.
00:04:43Our second bout of the evening on the Showtime Triple Crown of Championships,
00:04:48the IBF lightweight title fight between the challenger you're looking at now,
00:04:53Irelia's Kubanito Perez, born in Cuba, now living in Las Vegas,
00:04:57against the champion Jimmy Paul from the Crocs Stable in Detroit.
00:05:03And we've had one upset here already with the challenger, Bernardo Piñongo.
00:05:10From Caracas, Venezuela, upsetting.
00:05:13The new champion, Gabi Canizales, making his first title defense.
00:05:18He loses the crown to Piñongo.
00:05:21And there is Kubanito Perez.
00:05:22Managed by Jackie McCoy, one of the great veterans in the game of boxing,
00:05:29and has been trained for this bout by Eddie Futch,
00:05:32yet another great figure in the sport of boxing.
00:05:36Hedgeman Lewis will also be in his corner.
00:05:39So he's got some really qualified people around him.
00:05:41That's a pretty heavy-duty corner when you think about it.
00:05:44For the challenger, Kubanito Perez, he's got some great people there.
00:05:49Well, Tim, you know, Jimmy Paul doesn't like the great people either.
00:05:52This is both experienced corners.
00:05:55You can't get a better guy than Emanuel Stewart.
00:05:57Emanuel Stewart in the House of Champions at the Crocs Stable.
00:06:00Cronk Stable in Detroit.
00:06:02And there is Jimmy, of course, stable made of Thomas Hearns,
00:06:06Milton McCrorey, many other great champions from the Crocs.
00:06:09And there is Emanuel Stewart behind him in red.
00:06:11And also working in the corner, Luther Burgess.
00:06:22Jimmy Paul, nothing seems to faze this young man.
00:06:25He's calm, cool, and collected at all times.
00:06:28Usually a slow starter when the fight begins.
00:06:31How far is he going to go?
00:06:31It does not come out wildly and try to take somebody out early.
00:06:36He sets his own pace, counter-punches.
00:06:38He's very patient, and he's got that big right hand.
00:06:40All of a sudden, he can turn a fight around.
00:06:43Witnesses title victory against Harry Arroyo.
00:06:46That was an exciting bout.
00:06:48And it was the patience of Paul and the almost inevitability.
00:06:51As Arroyo had difficulty landing and then suddenly, bang,
00:06:55it was Jimmy Paul time.
00:06:59So, like he said, this might be the guy with the right hand.
00:07:03And that's what Jimmy Paul thinks it's going to be.
00:07:05He said, I know that Perez has got a great right hand.
00:07:08He said, but, of course, I know that's my best weapon, too.
00:07:10So, I think we're going to see some bombs thrown, that's for sure.
00:07:13You know, one of the points he brought up with you, Gil,
00:07:15in your conversation with him,
00:07:16when you asked him, how is Perez going to hit you?
00:07:18And he said, I'm going to put that shoulder up to make it difficult.
00:07:22And that is, indeed, the best part of his defense.
00:07:24He has really perfected that.
00:07:26He uses his body extremely well and gives you those difficult angles.
00:07:30Yes, he does.
00:07:30He's a very, very good defensive fighter.
00:07:32That may be the difference in the fight, both with...
00:07:34Well, we'll take a look here at the rules.
00:07:37Marvin, we're now in an International Boxing Federation belt,
00:07:40the last one being governed by the WBA.
00:07:42They both use a 10-point must system.
00:07:44There's no standing eight count.
00:07:46There is no three-knockdown rule.
00:07:48And you cannot be saved by the belt except in the last round.
00:07:51And to get a decision, you have to go six rounds.
00:07:54What that means is that if there is an unintentional foul
00:07:56that ends the fight sometime during the first six rounds,
00:07:59there is no decision, so you have to go six rounds in order for it to be official.
00:08:07And our tale of the tape will show that Jimmy Paul came in right at 135,
00:08:11the lightweight limit.
00:08:12Here lay us Perez at 134 and three-quarters.
00:08:15And they're almost the same height as you can see.
00:08:18A little...
00:08:18A bit of a reach advantage to the champion, Jimmy Paul.
00:08:21And now let's go up to our ring announcer, Michael Bucker.
00:08:26Ladies and gentlemen, this battle is sanctioned by the International Boxing Federation.
00:08:30The president is Robert W. Lee, supervisor ringside, Walter Stone.
00:08:34The three judges for this contest will be Rocky Castellani from the state of New Jersey,
00:08:39Ed Levine from Florida, and Paul Gibbs from Washington State.
00:08:42And now, ladies and gentlemen, man your battle stations for part two of this triple crown event
00:08:49from Top Rank Incorporated.
00:08:52This battle is scheduled for 15 rounds for the IVF Lightweight Championship of the World.
00:08:59The referee for this contest from Moorstown, New Jersey, Joe O'Neal.
00:09:04And now introducing first, in the blue corner, he's wearing the red trunks with white trim
00:09:12and weighs 134 and three-quarter pounds from Las Vegas, Nevada.
00:09:19His professional record, an excellent one.
00:09:2231 victories, only one defeat, 24 KOs.
00:09:27He's one of the top-ranked lightweights in the world.
00:09:30Ladies and gentlemen, Irleis Cubanito Perez.
00:09:41And in the red corner, wearing the gold trunks with the cronk letters,
00:09:46he weighs an even 135 pounds from the Motor City of Detroit, Michigan.
00:09:53He brings a professional record of 24-1, 19 by knockout.
00:09:58Ladies and gentlemen, the IVF Lightweight Champion of the World, Jimmy, the ringmaster, Paul!
00:10:07So, the referee for this bout, Joe O'Neal from Morristown, New Jersey.
00:10:19Judging down at ringside by Paul Gibbs from the state of Washington,
00:10:23Rocky Castellani from New Jersey, and Ed Levine from Florida.
00:10:26I expect you to be professionals.
00:10:27Good luck, and God bless you both.
00:10:29Touch hands.
00:10:30Touch gloves.
00:10:3010-point scoring system in effect again, and we are underway with this 15-round scheduled IBF Lightweight Championship out.
00:10:39Jimmy Paul wearing the red trunks, the gold trunks, pardon me,
00:10:43and in red will be the challenger, Cubanito Perez.
00:10:46Tim, I'm interested in trying to find out who's going to try to establish rounds first.
00:10:49Ready? Ready?
00:10:50Generally, Marvin, as we commented, Jimmy Paul chooses to start slowly.
00:10:56We'll see whether he's changed his tactics for Perez or not.
00:10:59I would doubt that he would.
00:11:00He's been successful the way he is, and we've already voted him the most colorful boots in boxing.
00:11:06Those are day-glow.
00:11:07They're Will Blinds.
00:11:08The lights go out, we can still find them.
00:11:10That's right.
00:11:13Pretty classy looks by the champion, Paul.
00:11:15One thing about Jimmy Paul is a very, very patient fighter, very good balance and good defense.
00:11:24Good defense.
00:11:24Great defense.
00:11:25That's what I love the most about Jimmy Paul.
00:11:29Most constant or constant jumps, so when they start off, they start dropping the left hand automatically.
00:11:33He keeps his up pretty well.
00:11:36Occasionally, he'll drop it down there, especially when he goes for the big bomb in the right eye, in the right, with the right hand.
00:11:42I think he just got a jab in the eye, though.
00:11:44Good, solid left jab by Perez.
00:11:45He's doing exactly what he says.
00:11:58He's throwing up that shoulder.
00:12:02Left hand underneath by Perez.
00:12:11Jimmy Paul really looks trained down.
00:12:13He doesn't have an ounce of fat on him.
00:12:15That's a hundred percent of the tiger is a muscle.
00:12:19Here's the right hand.
00:12:20He's going to be flying tonight.
00:12:24Well, Jimmy Paul can load you to sleep, load you to sleep, and all of a sudden, he puts you to sleep when he hits you.
00:12:30Jimmy Paul, 24 and 1, 19 knockouts.
00:12:32His only loss, a controversial one to Darrell Tyson.
00:12:35Many people thought he won that fight.
00:12:37Perez with only one loss on his record.
00:12:39Also a controversial, certainly a close loss to Hector Camacho, 24 knockouts in 31 victories for Perez.
00:12:47Well, Tim, we did the Camacho fight, and it was a close fight, and they did go, but I certainly thought Camacho did outpoint them that night.
00:12:53I did as well.
00:12:54But there were those in the audience who thought Perez won the fight.
00:12:58Under a minute to go.
00:12:59But it was a close fight, was the point, that Perez showed that he is world class.
00:13:04I noticed when Jimmy Paul was going for the title, and then when he got the title, he started stocking a lot more than when, in the early part, he used to box a lot more.
00:13:12But he's doing the right thing.
00:13:15He's throwing that shoulder up to offset that right hand of Perez.
00:13:19Well, the thing is, though, Marvin, sometimes when you throw that shoulder up, you tie up your own hand, and you can't punch too well with it.
00:13:24Exactly.
00:13:24But what about when that left hook comes?
00:13:27Still got your shoulder up.
00:13:34Let's do some nice, straight right hands to the ribs.
00:13:38You've got to come back with the left hook.
00:13:39Paul is dipping.
00:13:42He's dipping and getting away from that right hand of Perez.
00:13:47Coming to the end of round number one.
00:13:51Rick, sit back.
00:13:53Nice and clean.
00:13:54Time.
00:13:55I love this first round.
00:13:59In the Jimmy Paul corner, let's listen to Emmanuel Stewart.
00:14:02Let a man go, and you don't want to run right here, and they'll put the whole room.
00:14:06The tape has to be an important look down, trying to stop in this place.
00:14:09Round, the man is the law in your championship, because you didn't win that round.
00:14:12You understand?
00:14:13You don't lose your rounds, y'all.
00:14:15They're in good shape.
00:14:16You know, I mean, we wait for him a time.
00:14:17You let the man take a shot, then come back with something.
00:14:20If you don't tell him right away, move back to him and touch him, and then break off.
00:14:23Not one right hand.
00:14:24Not one left hook.
00:14:25He's giving away rounds.
00:14:26The man is going everywhere.
00:14:27I'm wearing it.
00:14:28What you say is, you got a slow starter in him.
00:14:31He's slow.
00:14:31But you're not doing nothing because you're walking in the face of yourself.
00:14:35If I get stopped on any rule, whoever's ahead of course is going to win the damn power.
00:14:38That's why you don't lose no round.
00:14:40That's what you do.
00:14:41You don't know how to go to work.
00:14:42You don't keep on trying if you don't hit.
00:14:43You don't let him win a bummer, James.
00:14:45You don't let him win a bummer, James.
00:14:45You don't let him win a bummer, James.
00:14:46You don't let him win a bummer, James.
00:14:47You don't let him win a bummer.
00:14:48Well, Emmanuel Stewart conceded that round to the challenger as we had scored it for
00:14:53Perez, and he wasn't too happy with the way Jimmy started.
00:14:56Well, I liked that first round, as I indicated.
00:14:58Again, the fact that Perez came out and saw him that he's here to fight, and he wants that
00:15:02title.
00:15:04Now, Jimmy Paul has to do one thing, and he has to try to keep the title, but he also
00:15:07has to fight because of that six-round thing there.
00:15:11So he has to fight.
00:15:13He can lose the title right there.
00:15:14Well, Manny Stewart really good on his case, and rightly so.
00:15:18He said, the first round is important as the 15th when he add up the points, and you
00:15:22can lose your title.
00:15:23You don't just give away rounds.
00:15:24He said, when you throw punches, when the guy punches, you have to punch with him.
00:15:28And Serez is starting to put a little punching power on his right hand now.
00:15:33We are just underway in round number two, and we'll keep you advised of the rounds in time
00:15:38as we normally do, but it's usually assisted visually with our graphic material, and right
00:15:43now we've got a technical problem with that.
00:15:45So we're just underway in the first minute of round number two.
00:15:47You're scheduled for 15, IBF lightweight championship fouls, to be followed by Carlos Santos and
00:15:55Buster Drayton for the junior middleweight championship.
00:16:01I believe Jimmy Paul is starting to heat up right now.
00:16:04He's snapping that left jab there.
00:16:06He's got to be kicked, but he don't leave that jab out there because Perez has got a nice
00:16:10right hand in here, over-counter that right, that left jab of Jimmy Paul's.
00:16:18I'm waiting to see Perez come back with a left hook.
00:16:21That's yet to come.
00:16:25Perez looks much bigger than Jimmy Paul to me.
00:16:28In the upper body, much bigger across the back of the shoulders.
00:16:30Perez actually came in a quarter of a pound under Jimmy Paul, so the difference of the
00:16:38way their body weight is distributed.
00:16:40But he has had a few fights at 140 pounds and told us that he liked it there, that he felt
00:16:45more comfortable there.
00:16:46Nice stiff, Perez.
00:16:47That's just true.
00:16:54Under a minute to go in round number two of this IBF lightweight title fight, Tim Ryan
00:16:59Gilclancy, marvelous Marvin Hagler, watching Jimmy Paul and Gold defend his crown against
00:17:04Erleas Kubanito Perez, ranked number nine by the IBF.
00:17:07Earlier this evening, we watched Bernardo Piñongo from Caracas upset Gabby Canizales to win
00:17:12the WBA bantamweight title.
00:17:14And our final event of the evening in the Triple Crown, the junior middleweight bout
00:17:18upcoming the IBF title, Buster Grayton against Carlos Santos, Showtime Championship Boxing
00:17:25tonight.
00:17:29Combination to the body by the champion.
00:17:34They start to throw some heavy blows out there now, Gil.
00:17:38You need to lend a beautiful right hand to the body.
00:17:41I like that.
00:17:44Coming to the end of round number two.
00:18:00Now on the corner of Kubanito Perez, as we'll no doubt have a battle of wits, depending on
00:18:05the progress of the fight, because as we mentioned, we've got some heavy duty corner men in the
00:18:09left corner.
00:18:10Jackie McCoy, Eddie Futch.
00:18:11Good point.
00:18:12Good point in that.
00:18:13Good point in that position.
00:18:14Good point in that position.
00:18:15Good point in that position.
00:18:16Right there.
00:18:17Whatever the sink you want.
00:18:18Yeah.
00:18:19Well, let's face it.
00:18:20We're not able to hear too well on that corner.
00:18:34Well, let's face it, we're not able to hear too well on that corner.
00:18:40Eddie Bunce when you're talking and he's kind of a quiet spoke man anyway.
00:18:43Come on.
00:18:45All right.
00:18:46He's busy.
00:18:47He's busy.
00:18:48He's busy.
00:18:49Stay busy.
00:18:50The only thing that I can indicate from that is that one to throw more right hands.
00:18:56Rally number three.
00:18:59Perez in red.
00:19:01Jimmy Paul on goal.
00:19:03He's turning his head when he's jabbing.
00:19:06He got popped there.
00:19:07Jimmy Paul just pops him with a goo in there.
00:19:08He's turning his head after he delivers his jab.
00:19:12Well, that very well may wind up being the difference in a fight.
00:19:28Paul seems to have control of himself at all times in the ring.
00:19:31He knows where he is.
00:19:32He has really good balance.
00:19:33And Cubanito's letting it all hang out.
00:19:34And by doing that, he'll let the silver open sometimes for counters.
00:19:39Exactly.
00:19:40Because by his head turning like that, he could be hit with that right hand.
00:19:42Never see it coming.
00:19:46Perez with three good scoring blows on the left in the last exchange.
00:19:50I think the key punch over here is Perez with the right hand and left hook if he ever shoots
00:19:55it.
00:19:56He's starting to fight a little amorous now.
00:19:58He's sucking his head down, getting away from punches.
00:19:59We're a minute into the third round scheduled for 15.
00:20:10You notice the way how he jabs, Gil.
00:20:12Perez really throws a stiff jab.
00:20:14He puts a lot behind that left jab.
00:20:15Maybe that's the reason for him turning his head with it, see?
00:20:17That's your head.
00:20:18That's your head.
00:20:19That's your head.
00:20:20That's your head.
00:20:21That's your head.
00:20:22That's your head.
00:20:23That's your head.
00:20:24That's your head.
00:20:25That's your head.
00:20:26That's your head.
00:20:27That's your head.
00:20:28That's your head from the challenger, Perez.
00:20:30He's getting killed, I think, a little bit.
00:20:35Perez.
00:20:36Did you see how Jimmy Paul made him miss those punches just by an inch or two inches?
00:20:41That's when you can really get hit with a counter.
00:20:44But for Paul to hit him, Paul is going to have to punch him.
00:20:50So far, he's not throwing too many punches.
00:20:57Under a minute to go in round three.
00:20:59No, no, no.
00:21:00Don't think that he's trying to counter.
00:21:02Well, that's his style.
00:21:03He's a master counter puncher.
00:21:09What I like about Paul, he keeps his head down after he's finished delivering his punch.
00:21:13Don't make me push it.
00:21:27Under the 30-second mark, we go in the third round.
00:21:30Body punching by the champion, scoring.
00:21:32Coming to the end of round number three.
00:21:33Jimmy Paul in gold.
00:21:34Givenito Perez in red.
00:21:35Tough fight so far.
00:21:36That's the end of the third round.
00:21:37There's the champion, Jimmy Paul.
00:21:38Going back to the corner.
00:21:39And the usual kind of slow-paced start by Paul.
00:21:40Do not be deceived.
00:21:41This is just about the way it usually goes.
00:21:43I'd like to remind our viewers that our June 23rd, top-ranked, Caesars Palace and viewers' choice.
00:21:44The pace of the game is going to win.
00:21:45It's going to win.

00:21:47It's going to win.
00:21:48It's going to win.
00:21:49It's going to win.
00:21:50It's going to win.
00:21:51It's going to win.
00:21:52Top-ranked, Caesars Palace.
00:21:53斯 Palace at the back of the men.

00:21:59These three, 2'bags.
00:22:002'bags, 2'bags, and then on the couple ends.
00:22:01Give it the winner.
00:22:02We!
00:22:032'olitK outfit.
00:22:04Pad.
00:22:052'장님.
00:22:063'aw, 3' positivo, and two.
00:22:073'invest quarterback.
00:22:08Good bye.
00:22:09Coes!
00:22:10That's the end of the third round.
00:22:11There's the champion, Jimmy Paul.
00:22:13For the quarter and the usual kind of slow-paced start by Paul.
00:22:15Do not be deceived.
00:22:16This is just about the way it usually goes.
00:22:17Hitter, live from Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
00:22:24Hagley, Hagley, do the chicken, come on, fight.
00:22:27Hey, listen, forget about my brother.
00:22:29Beat me first and then you get my brother.
00:22:30And that's impossible.
00:22:31I'm ready now.
00:22:32Hey, you guys, wait until June 23rd.
00:22:37Pick it up, lads, and move on.
00:22:39For now.
00:22:39On June 23rd, Duran faces Simmons for a middleweight title shot.
00:22:43Stevie Cruz challenges Barry McGuigan for the featherweight title.
00:22:45And the hitman, Thomas Hearns, defends his super welterweight crown
00:22:48against Mark Vidal, the triple hitter.
00:22:50Order now from your pay-per-view system.
00:22:54Tim, I love the way how Roberto ran.
00:22:57Come on out, you're chicken, you're chicken.
00:22:59These guys are making me more famous.
00:23:01I proved that.
00:23:02But my brother is, he's true, the policeman of the ring right now.
00:23:06And you think he's going to be more than ready for Roberto, huh?
00:23:08Oh, I'm telling you, he's in tip-top.
00:23:10I got the word yesterday.
00:23:11Robbie says, brother of Marvin Hagler,
00:23:13and he'll be facing Roberto Duran on the 23rd of June.
00:23:18I've got to hurry up and make my move before he gets here.
00:23:22Those guys are pretty good actors there.
00:23:24Of course, there's lots of Irish cops around,
00:23:26but I like Thomas Hearns in that uniform.
00:23:28He looks pretty good.
00:23:29He looks good.
00:23:30It seems to me, Tommy's done some work
00:23:32with the police department in Detroit.
00:23:34If my memory serves me correctly,
00:23:35he served as an auxiliary policeman.
00:23:37So we're in round number four here.
00:23:40Pardon me, round number three.
00:23:43Round number four.
00:23:45And in the last round,
00:23:47I think that Jimmy Paul played Cubanito Perez
00:23:50with a couple of body punches.
00:23:51So Perez is trying to back up just a little bit now.
00:23:54Jimmy Paul has started to gain his respect
00:23:55as a champion like he's supposed to.
00:23:57Did you score a round three for Paolo Perez?
00:24:08Yeah.
00:24:10Dead even.
00:24:25Nice shot, right.
00:24:26Paul is really picking up the pace,
00:24:31starting to get the measurement
00:24:32of Cubanito Perez right now.
00:24:35And he puts that constant pressure on you, Jimmy,
00:24:38because he's always in position to hit you,
00:24:40even though he doesn't move his hands enough.
00:24:42I think Perez is starting to feel now
00:24:44that he don't belong in the same ring with Jimmy Paul.
00:24:46Greg, step back.
00:24:47Don't hit him in the back.
00:24:48Come on, let's box.
00:24:50You can't get your fight.
00:24:51I think Paul realized he hurt him in the body last night
00:24:57because he's still punching downstairs
00:24:58and punching effectively.
00:25:01I think he's hoping to open him up like that
00:25:03by throwing in those crazy punches.
00:25:05And then you've got to leave something.
00:25:07And that's the opening that Paul's trying to find him.
00:25:09Step back.
00:25:10Step back.
00:25:11Stop putting.
00:25:11This combination scored by the champion, Paul, walking in.
00:25:29Under the 32nd mark in round four.
00:25:35Oh, no, no.
00:25:37Come on, nice break.
00:25:38Solid jabs by Paul.
00:25:46You're holding.
00:25:47You're holding.
00:25:48Warning for holding to Perez.
00:25:51Good left jab by the challenger.
00:26:00In Jimmy Paul's corner, in comes Emmanuel Stewart.
00:26:03Let's see how he approves now.
00:26:04Emmanuel is on the way.
00:26:05He's got to go through all these defensive moves.
00:26:09You blast him, watch all the men.
00:26:10You're supposed to start working on them inside.
00:26:12Great fighters are coming to fight.
00:26:13They ain't coming to pose.
00:26:15He's going to be trying to be a family, a clown, good friend.
00:26:18You're not doing shit.
00:26:20You're fighting a guy that ain't nothing.
00:26:22You're not punching.
00:26:23It's that simple.
00:26:24A man is doing good because you're not punching a lot.
00:26:26You block up.
00:26:27What you're worried about safety?
00:26:28You've got a championship of the world you've got to protect.
00:26:31The man is tired.
00:26:32He's giving.
00:26:32But you're not doing nothing.
00:26:33You've got to put out there and jogging.
00:26:35And we ain't going to be a holler in the skis.
00:26:37I'm not fighting.
00:26:38Shit, I'm sitting in a damn front.
00:26:39You keep pulling the wings.
00:26:40I don't want to be buying no TV fights.
00:26:42We're going to see these holes and shit all for about five.
00:26:45Break in with some of the fight.
00:26:47Combinations.
00:26:47We're going to put combinations together.
00:26:49We're a single punch in bullshit.
00:26:51You're a professional, little tailor.
00:26:52This ain't no damn amount of fight.
00:26:53We're just going to win a tournament.
00:26:54We're going to win a tournament.
00:26:57We're going to win a tournament.
00:26:58We're going to win a tournament.
00:26:59Well, I thought that Jimmy Paul had a very, very good mound in the fourth round.
00:27:03But apparently Manny Stewart didn't.
00:27:05No, he wants to keep him well.
00:27:06That's what he's got to do.
00:27:08That's the old secret of the corner man.
00:27:09You should know that, girl.
00:27:10So we suspect that maybe Stewart thought he won the round, but he's trying to keep Paul
00:27:17at the same pace.
00:27:17Is that what you're suggesting, Martin?
00:27:19I think so.
00:27:20You don't want him to fall asleep out there.
00:27:21I think right now Paul is concentrating on that sixth round.
00:27:25What was ahead in the fight?
00:27:26If he stopped, then Paul would lose his championship.
00:27:29What was ahead?
00:27:30I scored that round for Jimmy Paul as well on my card.
00:27:34But Emmanuel Stewart gave him what for.
00:27:36It's a colorful boxing language.
00:27:38I think he just shook Perez out with a nice punch right now.
00:27:41Perez is starting to hold.
00:27:43That's a sign.
00:27:44Well, he's putting constant pressure on Perez.
00:27:46You know, Marvin, I used to have Griffith do this in the gym, and I'm sure you could do it.
00:27:52So he would go in with an ordinary guy.
00:27:54And without throwing one punch in the round, have the guy dead tired at the end of the round.
00:27:58And I know you can do the same thing.
00:27:59Up to the mark, away from the mark.
00:28:01And that's what Jimmy Paul does.
00:28:02Without even doing too much, he keeps you within punching range.
00:28:05You can never relax.
00:28:06And that's why all these guys get tired and break up.
00:28:09Exactly.
00:28:10Get him throwing punches.
00:28:10Get him throwing something, what you think you see, and it's not there.
00:28:14Just find a way I had to fight Magali.
00:28:23We're in round number five, scheduled for 15.
00:28:28These guys are taking some awful straight, hard left jabs into the face.
00:28:32Right into the front of the face.
00:28:33Good right hand by Jimmy Paul.
00:28:35And Perez came right back.
00:28:40First time I see Jimmy Paul pull up out of there.
00:28:45Perez landed one way south of the border.
00:28:48Referee was not in position to see the punch.
00:28:53You know what my trainer said?
00:28:54When these guys, when they're hard to hit in the head, just hit them right in the body.
00:28:57Well, you know, the head moves, but the body doesn't, you know, exactly.
00:29:01Under a minute to go, round number five, marvelous Marvin Hagler, Gilfancy, Tim Ryan.
00:29:09We are live on Showtime watching the second of three bouts tonight, our triple crown of championship boxing.
00:29:18Here's that pressure that Jimmy Paul keeps putting.
00:29:21He just puts that pressure on him.
00:29:23He's making a fight, though.
00:29:24And here's Kevinito Perez calling him in to fight.
00:29:28Greg, step back.
00:29:29Nice and clean.
00:29:30Don't punch me, sir, Greg.
00:29:31But you can see a little bit of an experience in Perez right now.
00:29:34Oh, yeah.
00:29:35He's starting to fall apart a little bit.
00:29:36You know, desperation punches that he doesn't do what he's looking for.
00:29:40Be professional.
00:29:47Final seconds overhand right.
00:29:49Just missed, Perez.
00:29:51Well, you're going to say that all night with Paul.
00:29:53Just missed.
00:29:54He just makes you miss.
00:29:56That's the end of round number five as we go to the corner of the challenger.
00:30:01Rubenito Perez.
00:30:02Eddie Futch comes between the ropes to offer counsel.
00:30:05Counter against combination all the time.
00:30:09Good.
00:30:17One shot.
00:30:18There's a damn way.
00:30:19All the rounds.
00:30:20One, one, two.
00:30:21One, two, three.
00:30:21Yeah.
00:30:22One, two.
00:30:22One, two.
00:30:31Okay.
00:30:32Okay.
00:30:35How do you feel?
00:30:37Let's go, baby. Go like you want it now.
00:30:47All right, all right.
00:30:57Round number six.
00:30:59You know, I thought Jimmy Paul won that round, but not that big.
00:31:03The referee came over and asked,
00:31:05Cubanito, how do you feel?
00:31:07I mean, I don't think he said there was any danger
00:31:09of being hurt or stopped or anything else.
00:31:11That's a tough thing, psychological thing,
00:31:13for a referee to do to a fighter.
00:31:15I don't know, Bill. He was kind of slow going back to his corner.
00:31:17I think Jimmy Paul hit him with a nice right in the rib shot.
00:31:19And I was talking about the body.
00:31:21He caught him with a nice shot right in the body.
00:31:23And I see him walk back to his corner,
00:31:25and he looked a little like he felt it right there sitting down.
00:31:27Oh, there's no question he felt it,
00:31:29but I don't think he was any danger of being stopped with the part.
00:31:31No, no way.
00:31:33But that is the key.
00:31:35He hurts Perez every time he hits him in the body.
00:31:47You recall the guy was swinging wild now.
00:31:49He loves that.
00:31:51Paul gives you the target and takes it away.
00:31:53This is another fight with, uh,
00:31:55Gonzalez should have done.
00:31:57Take advantage of those loopers when you miss.
00:32:02As he joins the slate,
00:32:03Gaby Gonzalez losing his WBA Bantamweight crowd
00:32:06to Renato Quignongo of Caracas, Venezuela.
00:32:1115-round decision going to the challenger.
00:32:13Right hand by Paul to the chin of Perez.
00:32:22Beautiful combination.
00:32:23Just missed the whiskers.
00:32:29What I was saying about Perez,
00:32:30you see when he turns his head,
00:32:31and that was an indication right there
00:32:33that we got tagged with the right hand by Jimmy Paul.
00:32:35But you can't, you can't see it coming.
00:32:39So keep your eyes on your man at all times.
00:32:40There it is again.
00:32:42Now, uh, Perez is talking to him.
00:32:44I don't know what he's saying,
00:32:45but he's, uh,
00:32:46he got hit a good punch and he started to talk to Paul.
00:32:50Sometimes that tightens you up.
00:32:52Well, nothing bothers Jimmy Paul.
00:32:53He's...
00:32:54Keep him up.
00:32:55Cool as ice.
00:32:56He's looking for that big left hook there.
00:33:01Coming back to that one-two and the big left hook.
00:33:04Now Paul's talking to Perez.
00:33:09I think he fills this kid now.
00:33:14Well, not kid, young man.
00:33:18Well, you know,
00:33:19sometimes when you get a little old,
00:33:20everybody else you call a kid, you know.
00:33:23Hey, what are you talking about?
00:33:24Yeah, champ, I have to tell you
00:33:25you're older than both these guys.
00:33:27Yeah, I just had my 29 friends though.
00:33:28What are you talking about?
00:33:29Under 30 seconds to go.
00:33:31And round number six.
00:33:39Well, he'll make Perez fight.
00:33:40That's for sure.
00:33:45Perez landing some body shots.
00:33:47I don't think Jimmy Paul likes
00:33:48what he sees in Perez's face right now.
00:33:50He's trying to kill him.
00:33:55The end of round number six.
00:33:57Good finish by Perez.
00:34:01Well, over the three minutes,
00:34:02the champion, it appeared to me,
00:34:03had the better of it.
00:34:05And don't forget,
00:34:06we have one more championship out to follow
00:34:08on our triple crown of championship boxing
00:34:10on Showtime tonight.
00:34:11Carlos Santos,
00:34:12the ex-champion of the IVF junior middleweight division,
00:34:15has an opportunity to win back his crown.
00:34:18As they battle for the vacant title,
00:34:20it will be Santos against Buster Drayton.
00:34:23Upcoming,
00:34:24another scheduled 15 rounds of boxing.
00:34:27Santos, you may recall,
00:34:28if you are avid followers of the game,
00:34:31had won the title from Mark Madal,
00:34:33and then had it lifted from him
00:34:35because he failed to defend on schedule
00:34:37against Davey Moore.
00:34:38Moore was scheduled to meet Drayton tonight,
00:34:40but Moore got hurt in training,
00:34:41and here's Santos.
00:34:42So such are the whims and events
00:34:45in the game of boxing,
00:34:46and Carlos Santos
00:34:47hoping to take advantage of that.
00:34:51Upcoming after we complete
00:34:52this IVF lightweight championship.
00:34:55And waiting round number seven.
00:35:02Jimmy Paul in gold.
00:35:03Rubenito Perez in red.
00:35:06Solid right by the challenger scores.
00:35:09The challenger's come to fight now.
00:35:11And you know Perez has got meaner,
00:35:13and I think now he wants to try
00:35:14to take it away from Paul.
00:35:15He lands a lift.
00:35:17And they're going toe-to-toe here.
00:35:19And I think that's just what
00:35:20it's going to have to take.
00:35:23And Perez, you know there's no tomorrows.
00:35:25He has to go out and do it today.
00:35:3137-year-old Cuban Ato Perez
00:35:33in his first championship bout.
00:35:35Jimmy Paul in his third title fight.
00:35:40Jimmy Paul is still putting that
00:35:44subtle pressure on Perez though.
00:35:46Perez is throwing punches,
00:35:47throwing punches,
00:35:48and Jimmy Paul is still right there,
00:35:49right there.
00:35:50Thank you, sir.
00:35:51Cool as ice.
00:35:52Cool as ice.
00:35:59He's making Cuban Ato work.
00:36:03And you love it when they get mad,
00:36:04because then they can't fake when they're mad.
00:36:06Jimmy Paul looks a little awkward right now, too.
00:36:16Oh!
00:36:17Big right hand.
00:36:18There it was.
00:36:19That slowed up Perez,
00:36:20who had been pressuring the champions.
00:36:22He's holding like anything now.
00:36:23Let's see how much of that took out of Perez.
00:36:25Step back.
00:36:26Step back.
00:36:27Step back.
00:36:28He's gaining respect on Jimmy Paul right now.
00:36:29He was hurt.
00:36:30He was hurt.
00:36:31No question about it.
00:36:32The Ice Machine is starting to work.
00:36:42Oh, good left hook by Jimmy Paul.
00:36:44He was hurt.
00:36:45He was hurt.
00:36:46No question about it.
00:36:52The Ice Machine is starting to work.
00:36:57He's making everything out of himself, he's not going to have too much left too much longer
00:37:22Every time that Jimmy Park is there, he throws punches
00:37:27Another overhand right, scored by Paul, under 30 seconds to go, round 7
00:37:34Step back, nice and clean, no wrestle, watch your head
00:37:38Coming to the end of the 7th round, scheduled for 15
00:37:52Again, there you have one of those rounds where Perez, through the first minute or so, is applying all the pressure, then bang, that big right hand by Paul, kind of stopped the traffic
00:38:07Staying tight on this guy, and don't worry about getting your focus
00:38:10When you go in and you catch shots inside, you come back with the short hook, right and you get the catch of the shot
00:38:14The boy's getting tired, and when he finishes, he's pulling out with his hands down
00:38:18Catch the shots inside, then leap, leap good, right on foot
00:38:22So he's pulling out, he's pulling out with his hands down
00:38:24There's Livingstone Bramble, who had been scheduled to defend his lightweight title, but with an injury, the fight against Terence Ali postponed and wearing his now familiar hat
00:38:39And his youngster with him, also attired in the same Rastafarian colors of Livingstone Bramble
00:38:46I hope that I'm here working with you when that fight happens with him and Camacho
00:38:51That'll be something if that comes together, right
00:38:53That'll be an excellent fight
00:38:54Bramble and Camacho
00:38:56And just while standing, he's quietly on the sidelines saying, I'll let them sort things out and take on either one of them
00:39:03Meanwhile, he's got Rubenito Perez in front of him here in round number eight
00:39:13I think that Rubenito's gonna have to do something big to turn the tide right now
00:39:17Because Paul is measuring him, getting the distance and starting to hit him with some pretty good, solid shots
00:39:25It's time to work a lot more to the body, the right hooks to the body
00:39:28I mean, left hooks to the body
00:39:33overcoming it
00:39:34I
00:39:36need to get the back
00:39:38No need!
00:39:39No need!
00:39:43To the sports mules, no need!
00:39:44For the sportsYA
00:39:45Calls punches are effortless
00:39:46When Cubanito throws, he uses a lot of energy
00:39:48Because he's like an arm punter and he wins his punches
00:39:51No need!
00:39:53Oh my God
00:39:55That was the best straight right hand that I've been to throw
00:39:56Even if you can't hit it, hit someone with it.
00:40:08I think Paul has to be careful on the inside there
00:40:10if they don't get a headbutt.
00:40:11It would be a total way to lose a championship.
00:40:17Right hand scored by the challenger, although Paul
00:40:20pulled back just in time to take away the brunt of the impact.
00:40:26Paul is setting him up for that right hand.
00:40:34He backs a couple of right hands to the body
00:40:36and then brings it back up to the chin.
00:40:38That's to bring Destorah Perez to lower his hands.
00:40:49He was hiding behind that left shoulder again
00:40:51exactly as he said he was going to do.
00:40:53He knew that's what he was going to do.
00:40:54Go ahead, James.
00:40:56Greg, step back nice and clean.
00:40:57Watch your head, James.
00:40:58The only way Perez will have a chance for that defense
00:41:00is with the left hook.
00:41:02Come on.
00:41:03Come on.
00:41:04Fox.
00:41:05Fox.
00:41:06Let's go.
00:41:07Let's go.
00:41:12Jimmy Paul Warren for punching on the break by referee Joe O'Neal.
00:41:16Come on.
00:41:17Come on, Fox.
00:41:18You wrestle.
00:41:19Come on.
00:41:20Come on, let's box.
00:41:21Championship now.
00:41:22He wants to land that right hand.
00:41:23Overhand right.
00:41:24He's looking at it like his face.
00:41:25Setting him up.
00:41:26Championship fight.
00:41:27Get right off.
00:41:28Get off.
00:41:29Get off.
00:41:30Get off.
00:41:31Get off.
00:41:32Get off.
00:41:33Get off.
00:41:34Get off.
00:41:35Get off.
00:41:36Get off.
00:41:37Get off.
00:41:3830-second mark in round number eight.
00:41:46Perez just flails away with his punches.
00:41:55But he's landed a few of them.
00:41:58Flailing, but landing some.
00:42:01Close around his right side.
00:42:04And Clancy tells me he liked Paul in that round.
00:42:07A little too steady landed the solid of punches.
00:42:10Well, that's true.
00:42:11Now we're looking at Buster Drayton, then.
00:42:13He's preparing for a title fight in his own way.
00:42:16Looks very relaxed, Marvin.
00:42:17Oh, yeah.
00:42:18That's fine.
00:42:19Well, that's the way you should be.
00:42:20But maybe not so relaxed, because he's got to be fighting a very tough arm parade that's
00:42:24coming out here to meet him.
00:42:26He had on sneakers.
00:42:27They don't got no thing.
00:42:28And he spent $80 more.
00:42:30Punch it.
00:42:31Same style as the champion.
00:42:33Boy, he really looks nervous, doesn't he, Tim?
00:42:37He really looks nervous.
00:42:39Let's see that big laugh like this after the fight.
00:42:41All right.
00:42:42He has that style like that all the time.
00:42:49Very relaxed.
00:42:50Very happy, lucky kid.
00:42:51Well, young man.
00:42:52There you go calling that kid again.
00:42:53He's 32.
00:42:54How old are you?
00:42:55I'm 29.
00:42:56He's 32.
00:42:57All right.
00:42:58We're into round number nine.
00:42:59Jimmy Paul defending his IBF lightweight title against Cubanito Perez.
00:43:00You'll see Buster Drayton and Carlos Santos.
00:43:01The IBF junior middleweight title, 154 pounds.
00:43:02The third of our triple crown of championship boxing on Showtime.
00:43:06Spurs seems like every punch, like you said, is laughter.
00:43:07And that takes a lot out of you.
00:43:21It seems like every point, like you said, is an effort.
00:43:30That takes a lot out of you.
00:43:34Keep him up, James.
00:43:36Nice clean fight now.
00:43:37Come on.
00:43:37We're all right.
00:43:37Let's go.
00:43:39Jimmy Paul with victories over Harry Arroyo, Robin Blake,
00:43:43Galvin Hayden, Gannigan.
00:43:45A little tougher caliber of opposition than Perez,
00:43:48with the exception of the Camacho fight, which, of course,
00:43:50he left.
00:43:51And now Paul with a good combination.
00:43:54But coming right back with the left hand is Perez.
00:43:57Perez landed his best punch of the fight.
00:43:59Good left hook.
00:44:03He's still a strong kid, though, is Perez.
00:44:06And in boxing, anything can happen.
00:44:07You know it.
00:44:08To the left final bout.
00:44:09Step back.
00:44:10Get me with your shoulders.
00:44:17There's putting the accuracy on that right hand, Jimmy Paul is.
00:44:19I'd like to see Paul throw a couple of left hooks to the body.
00:44:25Right hand's on his chin.
00:44:26Set up his right hand that way.
00:44:27But he very seldom does that.
00:44:28He always leans to his right.
00:44:30Another person who was like that would be better to win.
00:44:33Always leans towards the right.
00:44:35Very slippery.
00:44:36It's a good move to get away from the right hand, though.
00:44:38Short chopping punches inside by Paul, but Perez willing to stay there and trade.
00:44:56Just the sharper punches have belonged to the champion this far.
00:44:59This is what Paul wants right here.
00:45:01He's got him right in front of him.
00:45:02That's the way he wants him.
00:45:07Well, one thing, Perez can take a punch because he's been nailing some good solid shots this round.
00:45:12Another straight right hand right on the chin.
00:45:16And then the good left hook.
00:45:17Paul's putting his punches together now.
00:45:23This kid's a little tired.
00:45:24That's the punch, the left hook on the body.
00:45:26That means more than all those punches on the chin.
00:45:33Well, punch out of there.
00:45:34You're free punch.
00:45:40Greg, step back.
00:45:48Greg, step back.
00:45:49Jimmy Paul does have a nice slap to the body.
00:45:54Final seconds of round number nine.
00:46:01And the champion, Jimmy Paul, in against the tough challenge of Cubaneito Perez.
00:46:07And if there's a trend in this fight, gentlemen, as we look at his corner,
00:46:11it would seem to be that Paul is landing the more effective punches,
00:46:15but he can't seem to get rid of Perez.
00:46:17He's looking more like a champion now.
00:46:19He's not wasting any punches.
00:46:20He's carrying out his opponent, and then so he's vulnerable to catch it with anything that he throws.
00:46:27What Perez is doing, he's playing last tag.
00:46:31No matter what Paul hits him with, he comes flailing back with something,
00:46:35even though there's not as effective as Jimmy Paul's punches.
00:46:38But he's really trying, and he's weighing any chance he can get.
00:46:41A lot of chatter in the Jimmy Paul corner, but a little more calm approach on the part of Emmanuel Stewart.
00:46:51He may feel, as we do, that his champion has assumed a certain control,
00:46:57but Perez is a dangerous puncher.
00:47:0024 knockouts and 31 KOs, and it is still very, very willing in this fight.
00:47:05Round 10.
00:47:06Well, this is the first time for me sitting up this course watching Jimmy Paul.
00:47:11I'm very impressed.
00:47:12He's fighting like a champion out there.
00:47:16He really has Perez backing up right now, though.
00:47:18Come on, come on, come on.
00:47:20Come on, come on.
00:47:21We're in round number 10 of the scheduled 15 round IBF Lightweight Championship.
00:47:35The second of the Triple Crown events on Showtime's Night of Championship Boxing.
00:47:42Jim Ryan will kill Clancy.
00:47:43Marvelous Marlon Hagler on special guest commentator.
00:47:46We watched Bernardo Pignongo take the WBA bantamweight crown earlier tonight from Gabby Canizales.
00:47:52And following this one, it is the IBF junior middleweight bout between Buster Drayton and Carlos Santos.
00:47:58Get him up, Jimmy.
00:48:00Well, one thing, whether or not Perez win or lose in this,
00:48:03but he's getting a great experience by being in with a good fighter like Jimmy Paul.
00:48:08Great champion.
00:48:10And Perez is getting very, very tired now.
00:48:13The effectiveness of that chart punching by Paul seemed to have taken its toll just even in this round.
00:48:24Oh, solid left hook by the champion.
00:48:27It was to Gabby.
00:48:31Perez must have a chin of wine because he got nailed.
00:48:34I wonder if Paul can take it if he got hit like this.
00:48:42Well, I doubt if you'll see that.
00:48:50Nice left to the body again by Jimmy Paul.
00:48:53He's such a defensive master, Jimmy Paul.
00:48:55He just slides and slips with every punch.
00:48:57Hey, come back.
00:48:58Nice and clean.
00:48:58Watch your hands.
00:49:01He's almost got an insight of just what Perez is going to do.
00:49:05Oh, what's he going to throw?
00:49:08Now, Perez is certainly throwing a lot of punches, though.
00:49:11Boy, he's trying.
00:49:13He wants that title.
00:49:20I'll hold him, Jimmy.
00:49:22Break, step back.
00:49:23Step back.
00:49:23I'll hold him, Jimmy.
00:49:31Under 30 seconds to go, round number 10.
00:49:34Let's do it.
00:49:35Let's do it.
00:49:35Let's do it.
00:49:35Let's do it.
00:49:36Let's do it.
00:49:40Let's do it.
00:49:40Watch your hands, Jimmy.
00:49:42Watch your hands, Jimmy.
00:49:47Well, Perez may be weary, but he continues to throw punches.
00:49:51In punches.
00:49:53Takes another short, sharp left from the champion.
00:49:55He's one of those type of guys that I believe you have to let him go.
00:50:00That's the end of ten rounds.
00:50:02They've got five more to go.
00:50:03Jackie McCoy applauding the effort of carries in round ten.
00:50:10Keep yourself together.
00:50:11Hold it.
00:50:13He's the boss all the time.
00:50:16He's the boss all the time.
00:50:19He can't get to you.
00:50:25Going back into that tenth round.
00:50:30Here you see Perez flailing away.
00:50:32But look at Jimmy Paul.
00:50:33Just slips those punches by an inch or two.
00:50:36And then counters back himself with a good left hook.
00:50:45Good right hand.
00:50:46Left hook by Jimmy Paul.
00:50:47Good combination punch.
00:50:49The sharper punch is definitely by the champion.
00:50:51And Perez just as busy, maybe more so.
00:50:56But doesn't have that same tricepire that Paul does when he lands.
00:51:02That's why the champion basically has an edge.
00:51:05Round number 11.
00:51:07Scheduled for 15.
00:51:09Jimmy Paul won the title from Harry Arroyo in April of 85.
00:51:13Defended successfully against Robin Blake with a 14th round KO.
00:51:17And as you can see, Paul has gone 6.3 rounds per bout on the average.
00:51:24Perez less than that as he's been putting his people away a little earlier.
00:51:28Well, it's a good start out, I tell you that.
00:51:30Bringing a lot of excitement into this round.
00:51:33You know what?
00:51:33I got to give Perez a lot of credit because I think I'm going to see Jimmy Paul fight.
00:51:37Arroyo and even Blake.
00:51:39This guy seems to be giving Jimmy Paul more problems than what those other guys did.
00:51:44I think Jimmy Paul's been hitting more punches tonight than he's been hitting his last four fights.
00:51:48Especially in the last two rounds.
00:51:50Last round and again this round.
00:51:52Well, this kid's definitely game.
00:51:56Young man.
00:51:57Now you got it.
00:52:0127-year-old Rubenito Perez has had 32 fights to 25 professional basketball.
00:52:07Jimmy Paul's trying to drop that right hand on him now.
00:52:10Jimmy Paul is getting a little tired himself, Marvin.
00:52:15He wants to get this guy out of there.
00:52:19I'm surprised these guys stayed in there this long, really, with the punches that he's been using.
00:52:31Who was keeping Perez in this fight, like this said?
00:52:33Every time that Jimmy Paul throws something, he'll come right back.
00:52:36He throws something of his own.
00:52:37That's what's keeping him alive in this fight.
00:52:41Plenty of desire.
00:52:47Now, to this point in the round, you know, Perez has really had the better of him.
00:52:54I think if he would light up on his punches and start putting his combinations a little faster,
00:52:58it'd be more effective.
00:52:59He has Jimmy Paul tired at the moment.
00:53:02You know, when a guy gets tired, Marvin, anything can happen.
00:53:04You know it.
00:53:05That's why Jimmy Paul is trying to finish him out right now, because he's tired.
00:53:17Now, Joe O'Neal has stopped it here and has asked Emmanuel Stewart to repair the tape on the left glove of Jimmy Paul,
00:53:27so both fighters get a little bit of a knee-to-breather.
00:53:32Well, we have a delay here in the 11th round with 40 seconds still to go,
00:53:38and the time starts to tick again.
00:53:41Sometimes there can be an effect right there by a little bit of rest.
00:53:44You're going to see what happens here.
00:53:45I think that helped Jimmy Paul, because he was going to decide to get him a little tired,
00:53:50and then a sudden he comes right out.
00:54:00Takes right to the body, backed up car.
00:54:03Harris firing away more wildly, but he just doesn't stop throwing them.
00:54:22That's the end of round number 11.
00:54:26You're going to take a pretty good shot.
00:54:49I'm going to keep running.
00:54:50Well, I can see that Perez in this round right here is starting to get to Paul.
00:55:05He's using good combination.
00:55:07He's just going for broke.
00:55:08And them kind of fighters like that, they become very dangerous,
00:55:10because you never know what kind of punch they're going to throw or come out with.
00:55:15Well, we've got four more rounds to go as we head into round 5.
00:55:20Well, I don't know what Jimmy Paul expected from Gubernico Perez,
00:55:24but I would consider this a fairly close fight to this point.
00:55:29There's some rounds that have been difficult to score,
00:55:31and so you can't predict how the judges are going to see those.
00:55:35The judges being Paul Gibbs from the state of Washington,
00:55:37Rocky Castellani from New Jersey, and Ed Levine from Florida.
00:55:43Paul, as we've said, continuously having the sharper, better-looking punches,
00:55:47but Perez overall might have been a little busier.
00:55:51Yeah, but Jimmy Paul seemed like he refreshed a little bit now.
00:55:54Now he's just going back into being slick,
00:55:56taking his time to make this guy miss an encounter for me.
00:55:59Perez has been very successful going to the potty
00:56:02any time Jimmy Paul misses a punch.
00:56:04That's why he's just staying right there because he's missing a lot
00:56:08when he tries to hit him with the right hand to the head.
00:56:10Don't worry.
00:56:12Nice.
00:56:14He had to follow up on it.
00:56:15There you go.
00:56:16Nailed him again.
00:56:24This is a fight right now.
00:56:26This is a battle with the right hand right now.
00:56:28All battling back after Perez puts him hurt on him.
00:56:33Landed a solid left jab.
00:56:35You have to start worrying.
00:56:36You hit the guy like Perez all night,
00:56:38and then he starts firing back.
00:56:40Both fights have taken tremendous punishment this round.
00:56:44I noticed that I hope that Jimmy Paul's not bleeding from the inside,
00:56:47or I hope that's just his mouth,
00:56:48because he's spitting out blood.
00:56:51Watch your head.
00:56:51Watch your head.
00:56:52Use your head.
00:56:53Use your head.
00:56:53Please, please.
00:56:54Jimmy, bring on in.
00:56:55There he is.
00:56:56He said they're both tired.
00:56:58Anything can happen right now.
00:57:00This is what makes the fight exciting.
00:57:02You're home, baby.
00:57:03Come on, man.
00:57:04I've got him here.
00:57:07This is what the people like to see.
00:57:08No more skilled technician.
00:57:10They want to see blood knockouts.
00:57:12There was a key right then and there.
00:57:14Jimmy Paul left for really the first time in the fight.
00:57:17And he got nailed again with a right hand.
00:57:24Under a minute to go, round 12.
00:57:26And Emmanuel Stewart said to Paul's,
00:57:30you can't win this fight by boxing and playing safe.
00:57:32You have to fight.
00:57:34They must have told Perez the same thing.
00:57:38But you know Perez is going to come right back to the counter.
00:57:44He gets Perez calling it in.
00:57:46He's waiting for that.
00:57:47That has to be a discouraging moment.
00:57:52Here you go with your best shot.
00:57:54And he calls you back in.
00:57:56Look at this.
00:57:57I wouldn't be too much in a hurry to go after.
00:58:05These kids ready to gamble right now, Bill.
00:58:08As they say, anything can happen when both fighters are in this kind of condition.
00:58:11Final seconds of the 12th round.
00:58:22Well, the coach said they didn't know whether or not they had a season.
00:58:27And Perez landed a last good blow.
00:58:29A right hand gets a smile from Jackie McCoy as he comes to the corner.
00:58:35I think the crowd has done the team a little bit more correct.
00:58:37Well, I think so.
00:58:39You know, they like the underdogs anyway.
00:58:42They've seen one underdog victory tonight.
00:58:43How do you feel?
00:58:44Yeah.
00:58:44Great fight.
00:58:45Great fight.
00:58:46You want to get the center down.
00:58:48They've got one of the referees.
00:58:49Come on.
00:58:50Keep close to the jam.
00:58:51Keep going to the referees.
00:58:53One of the referees.
00:58:59He sure is a tough guy, as a scourge.
00:59:02I guess Paul hit him with his best shots.
00:59:04And there he was, winging right back.
00:59:07Well, you know, whether win or lose, he's getting my respect in this.
00:59:11Oh, yeah.
00:59:13Come on, baby.
00:59:13Keep it off now.
00:59:14Come on.
00:59:14Come on.
00:59:15The record of 31-1 has only lost to Hector Camacho.
00:59:18Jimmy Paul has only lost to Darrell Tyson.
00:59:21The record of 24-1.
00:59:26Round 13.
00:59:27We've got a great lightweight fight on our hands here.
00:59:31Championship of the W of the IVF, International Boxing Federation.
00:59:34I believe Perez thinks that he can beat him now.
00:59:41Oh, there's no question about that.
00:59:42He's confident now.
00:59:43When he got hit with those good shots on the chin, he calls him.
00:59:47He calls him.
00:59:47He calls him.
00:59:47You know he meant business.
00:59:56You know, but when you see a guy like that, he's confident.
00:59:59It's like the old story.
01:00:00I see the light at the end of the tunnel.
01:00:03Oh, yeah.
01:00:03You take it down the way.
01:00:04Nice.
01:00:05Look at him.
01:00:06Nice.
01:00:06Let me finish my joke.
01:00:07Awesome.
01:00:08You see a light at the end of the tunnel, but the light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train.
01:00:12And that could be Jimmy Paul.
01:00:17It's your hand smart.
01:00:18I like that one.
01:00:18I've got to remember that one.
01:00:19I'm going to go.
01:00:21A little blood from the mouth of Paul again this round.
01:00:24Apparently, a cut on the lip.
01:00:25Looks like the lower lip inside.
01:00:30You know, Perez takes time to gather himself.
01:00:33He backs up.
01:00:33He backs up.
01:00:34But you can just see him like Fred get his second or third or fourth win.
01:00:38Then he calls Jimmy Paul on.
01:00:40I think what he wants to do is to keep the referee out of this.
01:00:43You feel as though the referee hasn't been doing him justice.
01:00:47Got nailed some punches again by Jimmy Paul.
01:00:49Paul, no question, is the better technician than the sharper puncher.
01:00:52Well, I tell you what, Jimmy Paul's getting his work out now.
01:00:57He's earning his money.
01:00:59Well, this could be a close fight on the scorecards, too.
01:01:01It is on mine, and I suspect it might be in the hands of the judges.
01:01:05Well, there may be a knockdown in this fight, Tim.
01:01:07They decide to fight.
01:01:08I just have a feeling somebody's going to go.
01:01:12They've got plenty of time now to figure each other out.
01:01:15And he comes right back.
01:01:17That left hook that I was telling you about earlier, that Perez should throw a lot more right there.
01:01:21As he catches him, he seems to be physically stronger than him.
01:01:25Oh, there was a good right hand underneath.
01:01:27That's that right hand we were talking about, Martin.
01:01:29No, coming up, he's bringing him up, Martin.
01:01:32He's bringing him up in the inside.
01:01:33Left hook.
01:01:35I think he's kind of tired now, though.
01:01:39Like he says, he regents it.
01:01:40He comes right back.
01:01:41That's what he does.
01:01:42He regents it.
01:01:42Look at this.
01:01:43Look at this.
01:01:44What a slutfest in round 13.
01:01:46Jimmy Paul wobbles a little bit.
01:02:04He wobbles.
01:02:07Bleeding from the mouth.
01:02:08I just hope that it's just from the mouth and not from the body.
01:02:15Well, he got hit enough body shots, Mom.
01:02:17No question about that.
01:02:19He's holding on now.
01:02:20You're free punch.
01:02:22Thanks.
01:02:22Get back.
01:02:23Go.
01:02:23Go.
01:02:24Go.
01:02:34It is OK.
01:02:35All right, Chance.
01:02:36All right.
01:02:37It is OK.
01:02:37There we see this war in the last round.
01:03:05And there's that right hand underneath that's been very, very successful for Rubenito Perez.
01:03:10What I like is now he's shooting him up, bringing him up, and coming back with the left
01:03:13hook.
01:03:14This is what I love.
01:03:15Real quick punch.
01:03:17Emmanuel Stewart has Jimmy Paul on your legs all right.
01:03:20Now he wants Jimmy Paul before he was telling him to fight the guy.
01:03:23Now he wants him to box him.
01:03:24Let's see if Jimmy Paul is able to box him.
01:03:27Round 14.
01:03:28Round 14.
01:03:29It has been a war.
01:03:31And it's gotten tougher as it's gone on.
01:03:33This kid's been looking like he's getting stronger.
01:03:35He's getting a little breathing.
01:03:36Here he comes.
01:03:37Now there's Paul trying to move those feet.
01:03:41Let's see if he can keep it up.
01:03:43There you go.
01:03:44There's the instructions from Emmanuel Stewart.
01:03:47Box.
01:03:47Dance on those legs.
01:03:49But this could be a wrong thing because...
01:03:50That's right.
01:03:51It could hit with a long punch.
01:03:52Right.
01:03:52And Perez is crazy enough to throw him out there like that.
01:03:56They don't care.
01:03:56Here, leap across the...
01:03:58There he goes.
01:03:59Here, leap across the ring.
01:04:01Jimmy Paul's legs are very, very suspect right now.
01:04:12I just said it.
01:04:13There they go.
01:04:15He might get it right.
01:04:16He might just have to stay in there and fight.
01:04:26Legs are like spaghetti.
01:04:31When that happens to you, it feels like you have no knees.
01:04:39Well, it happens because now you've got to stay in there and fight.
01:04:42Whether you want to or not.
01:04:44There's that right hand underneath again.
01:04:46Then you want to hit...
01:04:47Why is that right hand underneath again?
01:04:49He's feeding those right hands underneath.
01:04:51That takes the legs out of here.
01:04:54It's so funny.
01:04:55You can't keep this kid off you.
01:04:58Hey!
01:04:58Well, I never...
01:04:59I never saw a guy that won't win.
01:05:01He's throwing the title more than Kubernito Perez wants it.
01:05:03Look at this.
01:05:04You get on the field.
01:05:06That sure does help Jimmy Paul.
01:05:08No question about that.
01:05:10Well, plus he didn't get the tape off anyway.
01:05:12That's not great work by the referee O'Neal.
01:05:18He's still bleeding pretty heavily from the mouth.
01:05:21And he just got pushed back to the solid punch by Carrick.
01:05:24He was as much stronger physically right now.
01:05:27No question about that.
01:05:28I don't say that Carrick still wasn't on the punch.
01:05:31He's got the snapping punches.
01:05:32But physically, Perez is the stronger guy in there right now.
01:05:35A lot of judges like fighters like that.
01:05:37The aggressive, cutting the fight, turn your heart.
01:05:39Good luck hook by Perez.
01:05:41And he has to be careful, especially these late rounds like this.
01:05:50Steady O'Fierry, you have to knock the champion out to win.
01:05:53Well, this is going to be a tough one to judge, especially if Perez keeps coming on in the 15th round.
01:05:59If that's what I'm saying, definitely.
01:06:04Perez just did a smart thing.
01:06:06He hit him with his shoulder.
01:06:08When you got to ask no legs, that's a good thing to do.
01:06:11Put your head right down there and go right toward him.
01:06:14Perez obviously prepared well for this fight.
01:06:16He's never been more than 10 rounds.
01:06:18Paul's been 15 and 14.
01:06:19But here's Perez, strong in the 14th round.
01:06:23He looks strong.
01:06:24I think you can catch him with that.
01:06:26The end of the 14th round.
01:06:30Jimmy Paul looks a little worried.
01:06:33He's a little worried.
01:06:38Terrific fight is going into the final round for the IBM Lightweight Championship.
01:06:44I am, too.
01:06:45Yes, I am.
01:06:46Now, Gil and Mahrez, do you agree or argue with that?
01:06:49Yes, I think that Perez won the last four rounds.
01:06:52All right, well, on my scorecard, he's ahead.
01:06:55Now, the judges obviously may see things differently, but I've got the challenger leading.
01:06:59Watch this stagger.
01:07:00He staggers Jimmy Paul right there.
01:07:02You should have executed it right away.
01:07:04Jump right on top of him.
01:07:11Beautiful.
01:07:13As you've been saying it all night, you've got to come back.
01:07:16Put the hook in the middle of my hand.
01:07:18Can't just throw one punch in there, expect to win.
01:07:22Well, I've got three swing rounds in my car that if they went to Paul would have it all even.
01:07:31If they went the other way, then Perez will be the winner.
01:07:34Swing like that.
01:07:35With that left hook.
01:07:37This is the final round.
01:07:39Left hook of Perez.
01:07:41But Perez is doing a smart thing.
01:07:43He's starting his combinations from the body and working up.
01:07:46As we said earlier, you don't miss that body.
01:07:48The left.
01:07:48With that hook to the shin.
01:07:50Great.
01:07:50Step back.
01:07:50Step back.
01:07:51I think his right hand to the body has been the key.
01:07:54Thanks, that right hand to the key.
01:07:55Jimmy Paul now is not dipping as much as he was.
01:07:57Jimmy Paul is dead.
01:07:58He doesn't have a leg under him.
01:08:00I think he told Manny Stewart that he was tied.
01:08:06And Manny Stewart says, yeah, I feel sorry for you.
01:08:09Well, you know what I would tell him?
01:08:10I said, the other guy's more tied.
01:08:12Look at him.
01:08:12He can't even get up.
01:08:21Perez now smothering Paul.
01:08:23So those beautiful punches.
01:08:25And Paul's had no effect.
01:08:27This kid might steal it from her if he keeps fighting like this.
01:08:36And he's going to keep fighting like that.
01:08:38He knows the other way.
01:08:39He hasn't turned that head again.
01:08:41That's a very bad move he's got.
01:08:43Well, as I said, Jimmy Paul shows the snap of his punches.
01:08:47But Perez keeps coming back.
01:08:49The left hook.
01:08:50Perez has got to use the left hook.
01:08:52But he's been wide open, as soon as he gets away from Paul.
01:08:56There it is.
01:08:59The left hook.
01:09:01Come right back.
01:09:02He's got to stay tight.
01:09:03Yes.
01:09:04He's got to stay tight.
01:09:05Jimmy Paul's way from the back up to shoot the right hand.
01:09:10Look at this effort here on the 15th round by both these guys.
01:09:14Fantastic.
01:09:15Well, this is going to be the minute right now.
01:09:18Well, my hat's going to go off the both of them.
01:09:20I can't say my hair.
01:09:22That's true.
01:09:23A minute to go on the fight.
01:09:27There's the right hand to the body again.
01:09:29Sets up the other punches.
01:09:30Nice.
01:09:31He caught him with that left hook again.
01:09:32He sets it up with that right hand on the knee.
01:09:36What's that left hook?
01:09:37He says Jimmy Paul has been down before.
01:09:41He's gasping for air.
01:09:43There's the right hand on the knee.
01:09:44Sets up the left hook.
01:09:46Catches him all night with that left hook.
01:09:47Down to the body like he said.
01:09:50Then bring it right on up.
01:09:52There it is again.
01:09:53Again.
01:09:53There it is.
01:09:54The best of the fight.
01:09:55Fuck in.
01:09:57That right hand's been working overtime underneath, Martin.
01:10:02That's where he's got to stay close.
01:10:04Keep that head down and use those punches.
01:10:07They're going for it now.
01:10:09What condition are both of these guys around?
01:10:11What a fight.
01:10:14What a fight.
01:10:15Final seconds.
01:10:23They stay tight.
01:10:25That's it.
01:10:27That is it.
01:10:31Got it.
01:10:32The fans at Brendan Byrne Arena in the Middellands have seen themselves quit a championship fight
01:10:38on their feet.
01:10:39A standing ovation for Jimmy Paul and Rubenica Perez.
01:10:43A thrilling R.B.F.
01:10:45Lightweight Championship bout.
01:10:49Well, they've definitely got their money tonight.
01:10:52They've got their money, Will.
01:10:54Now, gentlemen, I'm going to head up there and await the decision of the judges.
01:10:58And they have a job on their hands, although certainly on our card, the last six rounds
01:11:04that we scored for Perez.
01:11:06So, he certainly could well be the second challenger to score a victory here tonight.
01:11:12Paul Gibbs, Rocky Castellani, and Ed Levine will do the scoring.
01:11:15And don't forget the first round where Jimmy Paul gave it away, and Manny Stewart told him
01:11:21it's just important to win the first round as it is the last.
01:11:25Now, if, in fact, Paul did win, or Perez did win the first round on all the judges' cards,
01:11:30that's one in the bank.
01:11:32Plus, all the rounds he won at the end.
01:11:34Right, that's what I believe in.
01:11:35That can be the fact that they might steal the fight and turn the tides over to the other
01:11:38way.
01:11:39And if my memory serves me correct, then I lost scorecard that Jimmy Paul didn't do
01:11:43too much in the second round either.
01:11:45It wasn't until the third round he woke up.
01:11:47So, Perez did have those first two rounds in the bank as far as I was concerned.
01:11:51Sure.
01:11:52I tell you what, it was an exciting fight, whichever way it goes.
01:11:55Oh, you hate to see a loser in a fight like this.
01:11:57And they can't both walk out champions, and it's a shame.
01:12:02And here we go, the action in the last round.
01:12:04You talk about two guys fighting their heart out.
01:12:07Really digging down underneath.
01:12:09Well, he kept his head down.
01:12:10Making everything go.
01:12:11Perez kept his head down to try to stay real close to him.
01:12:13I was nervous about him backing up out of there, because that's where Jimmy Paul wants
01:12:17to hit him with the right hand.
01:12:18He couldn't get any leverage on it.
01:12:20That right hand underneath of Juvenito Perez was very, very effective.
01:12:24Any time he wanted to start something, there's the right hand underneath again.
01:12:28That's what you love.
01:12:28There it is again.
01:12:31There it is again.
01:12:32But I love it with the left hook.
01:12:33He was catching him near the end with that left hook.
01:12:34That's right.
01:12:35He was setting him up with those body shots.
01:12:38All right.
01:12:38Now, let's go to Michael Buffer for a very, very interesting decision.
01:12:44Ladies and gentlemen, here's the official scoring.
01:12:49George Ed Levine scores it 143-143.
01:12:54And Rocky Castellani has it 144-141 for the winner.
01:13:06And still right, right.
01:13:09Chalked in the right.
01:13:11Jimmy, the remastered ball.
01:13:15Very tough decision.
01:13:16Well, that was a tough one, as we say.
01:13:18I'd hate to see either guy walk out without a championship.
01:13:21But this kid will be back.
01:13:22Perez showed a lot of heart and guts in there.
01:13:24He'll be back.
01:13:26Well, you know, Mark, when you give an all-out effort like that and you walk away with, you know,
01:13:30just the plaudits of the crowd, it's tough.
01:13:33Well, if Jimmy Paul ever thought that this game was easy, now he found out.
01:13:36All right.
01:13:36Now let's go up to Tim Wright in the ring for the interviews.
01:13:39All right, Gil.
01:13:40We've got the champion, Jimmy Paul, who's won a split decision here to retain his title against
01:13:45Cubanito Perez.
01:13:46And, Jimmy, on our cards, I must tell you, we scored the last six rounds for Perez.
01:13:52And we felt that this was going to be close depending on how the judges saw the early part of the fight.
01:13:57How did you feel about where you were in the later rounds?
01:14:00I thought in the later rounds, I was kicking out the kick in the pace more.
01:14:02The early rounds, it was pretty close.
01:14:04But in the later rounds, I came more strong.
01:14:05I was hitting with a little short puncher.
01:14:07And I was always coming forward and making the first break.
01:14:09And that's the main thing in order to be a champion.
01:14:11You've got to be first.
01:14:12Well, Cubanito, what's your view on this?
01:14:14Obviously, a very close and tough loss for you to take in your first championship bid.
01:14:19Well, it was a tough fight.
01:14:20Jimmy Paul is definitely a good credit for the boxing world.
01:14:23He's tough.
01:14:23He's a good fighter.
01:14:24And, you know, I've got to give you the guy to a lot of credit.
01:14:26He just wants to be a champion.
01:14:27And I thought if I was close, I'd come to the end.
01:14:30I thought I won at least the last five or six rounds.
