The problem is much larger than most of us would probably like to believe. Some of the major hosts, (like GoDaddy) offer 5.3 as an htaccess swap, but many others don't. For example, Rackspace still hasn't upgraded their Cloud Sites offering and it seems that Bluehost is also still on 5.2.
