00:00Hey everyone, it's season 11.
00:08This is my favorite season ever.
00:10This one has a little twist.
00:13I'll say.
00:15As always, we have a whole group of new designers ready to compete.
00:19But none of these talented designers really know what we have in store for them.
00:23No, this is what I call a real twist.
00:27Teams.
00:28Teams.
00:29You heard us right.
00:30Teams.
00:31This season every challenge is a team challenge.
00:34But there will only be one winner.
00:36Every successful designer works as part of a team.
00:39This season is what fashion is really about.
00:42Everyone has to work together and collaborate.
00:45Communicate.
00:46Work it out.
00:47It's just like the real world and this is exactly why this is my favorite season.
00:52Welcome back to Project Runway season 11.
00:54It's all about teamwork.
00:56This is Project Runway.
00:57My name is Liana Aguilar.
01:04I'm 28 and I'm originally from Brazil but I've been in New York for three years.
01:09I couldn't sleep last night having dreams about garments that I'm going to make and I'm freaking
01:16out.
01:17My name is Richard Hallmark.

01:35Hey.
01:36Hello.
01:37This moment is definitely a dream come true.
01:40Oh my God, guys.
01:41We're here.
01:42I'm really type A personality so as a preference I'm a lone wolf.
01:47But as a bridal designer I have my own company so I have to delegate.
01:51If I had my way I'd just clone myself and I would do everything.
01:54Sorry to interrupt.
01:55It's okay.
01:56It's kind of crazy.
01:57Michelle Lesniak Franklin, 30 fedorable.
02:01It's a lot bigger than I thought it would be.
02:04My point of view as a designer is what I like to call geek chic.
02:08A very vivacious, confident woman that could recite the periodic table of the elements.
02:19This is my first time here in New York City and this is crazy.
02:22I'm really excited to be here.
02:24My name is Daniel Esquivel.
02:25I'm 48 years old and I'm from Austin, Texas.
02:28Being bullied, I did drop out of school in the ninth grade.
02:31I am not formally trained.
02:32I'm self-taught.
02:33Oh my God.
02:34This is crazy.
02:35Hi.
02:36Hi.
02:37Hey.
02:38Hi.
02:39I'm Kate.
02:40Nice to meet you, Patricia.
02:41Nice to meet you, Patricia.
02:44My name is James.
02:45I'm 29 years of age and I'm from Dallas.
02:48Where did you make an entrance?
02:51Hi, Michelle.
02:52Very nice to meet you.
02:53Hey there.
02:54Hi.
02:55I'm Kate.
02:56I'm Kate.
02:57Nice to meet you.
02:58Hi, Amanda.
02:59Hi.
03:00My name is Emily.
03:01I'm 24 years old and I'm from Falls Church, Virginia.
03:03Hi, Mr. Emily.
03:04Daniel.
03:05Nice to meet you.
03:06I know funny.
03:07Stanley, good to meet you.
03:08Hi.
03:09Hey, Kate.
03:10Hey, Kate.
03:11Hi, Kate.
03:12Stanley.
03:13Hi, James.
03:14Two.
03:15Two?
03:16Yes.
03:17Two.
03:18Hi.
03:19I'm Cindy.
03:20You with Liana?
03:21I went to this school.
03:22Hi, Matt.
03:23I'm Richard.
03:24Richard, nice to meet you.
03:25I'm from New Orleans.
03:26Where are you from?
03:27At the moment, I am living in London.
03:29My husband and I own a funeral home.
03:31I'm a funeral director.
03:32Oh.
03:33After 23 years of running a funeral home with my husband, I was really feeling a creative
03:40void in my life, so I enrolled in design school and I graduated this year.
03:46I would never guess that.
03:47You're so cheery.
03:48I'm so cheery.
03:49Oh, I'm cheery.
03:50This is a cheery business in a way.
03:52Yeah.
03:53I love it.
03:54Who's doing it?
03:55Guys, guys, guys, everyone.
03:56Look at that saddle.
03:57Oh, my God.
03:59Oh, my God.
04:00Well, I guess we should let our designers in on our little twist.
04:05Hi, there.
04:14Hi, there.
04:15Hi.
04:16Welcome to season 11 of Project Runway.
04:19Woo-hoo.
04:20Woo-hoo.
04:21Well, we're thrilled to have you here.
04:22We want to welcome you to Parsons, the new school for design.
04:26And also, congratulations, because thousands of people wanted to be in your shoes and you
04:33were chosen.
04:34There are 16 of you here now, but at the end, there will only be one winner.
04:38You're going to be competing in challenges to prove to the judges that you have the talent
04:42and the distinct point of view to be the next great American fashion designer.
04:46Tonight, you will move into your apartments.
04:49Project Runway's original New York home at the Atlas, Gotham's luxury apartment building
04:54in Manhattan's fashion district.
04:56But this season is a little twist.
04:59Okay.
05:00Okay.
05:01Okay.
05:02This season is Project Runway.
05:06Teams.
05:07Lord have mercy.
05:08Not that I'm not a team player, I just like to be on my own team.
05:17Every challenge will be a team challenge.
05:20You guys like working in teams?
05:22Yes.
05:23You can be done.
05:24Really?
05:25Let's see about that.
05:26I'm very excited about this because the real world is about teams.
05:31And especially in fashion, no one works alone.
05:33And as we begin the season, you're going to be divided into two teams of eight.
05:38If I call your name, you will be sitting on the left.
05:41If I don't call your name, you're sitting on the right.
05:44And these will be your teams.
05:46Daniel, Amanda, Layana, Richard, Patricia, Joe, Stanley, Kate.
06:01The rest of you have a seat on the right side of the room.
06:05Now that you're in your teams, do you want to hear about your first challenge?
06:08Yes.
06:09We don't play around here on Project Runway.
06:11We get right to it.
06:13Your challenge is to create a garment that shows us who you are as a designer with the input of your team to guide you.
06:20We want you to have a good comprehensive understanding of the overall design aesthetic of each member of your team.
06:29Because you're only as strong as your weakest link.
06:33We still want to see who you are as an individual.
06:36You know, you have to just do that in a team setting.
06:38There will be a winning design team and a losing design team.
06:42And one member of the winning team will be the winner of this challenge.
06:46And one from the losing team will be out.
06:49Your inspiration for this challenge is New York City.
06:54But each team will have a different perspective.
06:57The team over here will have a point of view from afar.
07:01You will take a boat out to the Hudson and look back onto the city.
07:06The team over here will have a view from New York City from above.
07:11You will go to the roof of the Atlas, which has an amazing panoramic view.
07:18So, I'm going to see all of you in the morning.
07:22And I have to say, I'll see you back here on the runway.
07:24Let's get out of here, Tim.
07:26All right, honey.
07:27I'll go anywhere with you.
07:28See you tomorrow.
07:33Holy cow.
07:34Getting onto the roof is amazing.
07:37I mean, we have the greatest view of the city.
07:41Wow.
07:42I'm so happy to be here.
07:43Damn.
07:44To the win.
07:45Yeah!
07:46To the win!
07:47Our inspiration for the first challenge is New York City from a far distance.
07:59Our team name is Keeping It Real.
08:00I thought of it on accident.
08:02I said it out loud, and all of a sudden, some of the people around were like, that's it.
08:06We're keeping it real.
08:07Yay!
08:08Yay!
08:09I'm super excited.
08:10Yay!
08:11I know.
08:12Come on, y'all.
08:13We've got to do it.
08:14We've got to do it.
08:15Right now, my profession is I am a costumer.
08:17I work on productions to provide all the wardrobe.
08:20My point of view is bringing the essence of couture into ready-to-wear and actually bringing
08:25it to the masses.
08:26Woo!
08:27Okay!
08:28Cheers to getting to know everybody and winning!
08:29To success!
08:30Woo!
08:31To success!
08:32Woo!
08:33Salud!
08:34Salud!
08:35Salud!
08:36Salud!
08:37We just have to help each other as teammates.
08:41Right.
08:42Our team name is Dream Team because I came up with Team Work Makes the Dream Work and everyone's
08:50cool with it.
08:51Mmm, this looks so yummy.
09:04Is that Brooklyn Bridge?
09:06Hello, my name is Patricia Michaels and my native name is Water Lily.
09:10As far as I know, I'm the first Native American designer to get to Project Runway.
09:14It's got some beautiful old architecture on this side.
09:17I went to college at the Institute of American Indian Arts and then after that, you know, Chicago
09:22Art Institute and I never stopped.
09:24I'm more than honored to be a strong voice for Native Americans as far as design is concerned.
09:30Yes!
09:31Oh!
09:32All right!
09:33That's sweet!
09:34Wow!
09:35I love that!
09:36Whoa!
09:37There you go.
09:38That's my prayer.
09:39That's my prayer.
09:44It's a lot to take in right now.
09:45It's very overwhelming, but it's very cool overwhelming.
09:48Coming up on Project Runway.
09:50No.
09:51No.
09:52I'm gonna panic.
09:53Ayayay.
09:54Oh my God, what the hell is wrong with you?
09:56That could come to bite us in the end.
09:58This is a good real estate.
09:59To be in the workroom, it was like a big wave of fashion hit me.
10:17Oh my God.
10:18Each team has their sides.
10:19You can feel the excitement in there.
10:20Cool!
10:21Hey everybody!
10:22Wow!
10:23What a lovely reception!
10:24I want to welcome you to your workspace at the 1407 Broadway Building.
10:37This is gonna be your home away from home for a while.
10:39We have the Brothers Sewing Room.
10:41It's behind the Lord and Taylor accessory wall, which will be very important for your styling.
10:46And down the hall, we have the L'Oreal Paris hair and makeup rooms.
10:49And we're thrilled to be partnering with HP again.
10:52You each have an HP tablet.
10:54And I just want you to know, the HP and Intel technology will really help elevate your creativity.
10:59It's a wonderful tool to have.
11:01I have to also tell you, one of the things I'm most excited about with Season 11 is the fact that you are working in teams.
11:06I love the whole concept.
11:08Remember, it's your design.
11:11The part of this challenge is to get to know your teammates and take advantage of their feedback and support.
11:16We are going to be shopping at Mood, our first Mood trip.
11:21Each team will have $1,200.
11:24That translates to $150 per designer.
11:28But if you as a team want to distribute the money differently, that's your decision to make.
11:33Your runway presentation is tomorrow.
11:35So you have one day for this challenge.
11:37Sketch, caucus, huddle.
11:38And then I'll come and get you and we'll head off to Mood.
11:42Thank you, everyone.
11:47It's coming too easy, guys.
11:49All right, design teams.
11:51Let's head off to Mood.
11:52Yeah!
11:59Whoo!
12:00This is a good one.
12:01Designers, you have ten minutes remaining.
12:03Oh, you're right.
12:06Time's up.
12:07Everyone needs to be at the counter.
12:08Hi.
12:09How are our design teams?
12:10Hi.
12:11Well, I'm here to check in with you and I'm very excited about it.
12:15Yay!
12:16Dream team, I just want you to know, we've never worked this way before in Project Runway.
12:21We're all going to participate in this process together, giving good, honest, thoughtful feedback.
12:28And I'm here to moderate, to participate, and to facilitate.
12:34So, Michelle, tell us about the look you're creating.
12:35My sketch that I had done was very sort of structured.
12:37Mm-hmm.
12:38And then on top of it, sort of a modern take of a pinafore.
12:41I'm really favorably, I'll use the word, wowed.
12:42Oh, thanks.
12:43This is planned to be a show.
12:44I've never worked this way before in Project Runway.
12:45I've never worked this way before in Project Runway.
12:46We're all going to participate in this process together, giving good, honest, thoughtful feedback.
12:47And I'm here to moderate, to participate, and to facilitate.
12:48So, Michelle, tell us about the look you're creating.
12:49My sketch that I had done was very sort of structured.
12:52Mm-hmm.
12:53And then on top of it, sort of a modern take of a pinafore.
12:56I'm really favorably, I'll use the word, wowed.
12:59Oh, thanks.
13:00This is planned to be a short dress over a slim pant.
13:07What do you want to think?
13:08Do you really need a pant?
13:09I mean, so far it's looking like a beautiful dress.
13:11Yeah, I think so, too.
13:12And do you think it should be long?
13:14It seems to me to make more sense when you see the full length of it.
13:18Yeah.
13:19And see, this would look really good with a top, and then doing that with the black, right?
13:23So we could say either the panels would be matted, or the whole top would be matted.
13:28I do have a slight concern that this might not be enough.
13:32If it's very fitted on the bottom, think about perhaps more volume on the top.
13:36Okay.
13:37There's going to be lots of strips of the chiffon.
13:40I'm working with a few different colors to break it up.
13:42This is good.
13:43I'm going to do a rock-on sleeve.
13:45It's going to look like a building.
13:46Emily?
13:47Well, I'm making a really built-out, like, architectural jacket.
13:52And then, as far as the dress goes, I like black and blue together.
13:56So I'm going to panel them so that it mimics the building.
13:59Do you have too much happening?
14:01Is there too much going on?
14:02That's what I'm kind of struggling with right now.
14:05Well, let us help you.
14:06If you needed to lose one of the ideas, you can lose the jacket.
14:10But you can't send someone down a runway wearing just the jacket.
14:13I'm really impressed with you all, as individuals and as a group.
14:17All right, thank you.
14:19Now, keeping it real.
14:21Okay.
14:22What I did is I created this really soft, textured, like, sweater dress, basically.
14:27If you take the sleeve off, it'll, like, sex it up with the sheer.
14:29I feel like this makes it more sophisticated, though.
14:33No sleeves.
14:34Do you think I should get rid of the sleeve?
14:36I'll get rid of it.
14:37Oh, yeah.
14:38It's not a conservative dress.
14:39Okay.
14:40I love to play with, like, the line.
14:42And I, like, sharp and va-va-voom, but in a very classy and feminine way.
14:48But then, boom.
14:50I love molded shoulders.
14:52And then peplum is going to be like this all the way around.
14:55And then, of course, it's just with a slim pant underneath, because I'm going to leave it very simple.
14:59Excellent.
15:00I have this, and it's going to be a simple shift, with slashes.
15:04How much slashing are you doing?
15:05I would do it all over.
15:07Okay, so just have fun with it.
15:09Yeah.
15:10I mean, yeah.
15:11This is very compelling, all of it.
15:14Time to get back to work.
15:15Yes.
15:17Thank you, everyone.
15:19This is our power hour.
15:20I hope.
15:21Oh, come on.
15:23Hi.
15:24Oh, I'm so lucky.
15:26I love the way this looks.
15:28You come out.
15:29I need you to walk for your life, honey.
15:32You look a little stressed.
15:33How are you doing today?
15:34I'm okay.
15:35That's looking so beautiful, Patricia.
15:38Oh, thank you.
15:41I look up at the clock, and I barely have anything.
15:44It's really time to reevaluate everything that I'm doing.
15:47Oh, my God.
15:48What the hell is wrong with you?
15:50Like, we told you in our critique, don't get bogged down trying to figure out multiple pieces.
15:55Just work on something.
15:56Get a dress made.
15:57Hey, everybody.
15:58Time's up for the night.
16:00It's time to pack up and go.
16:03I don't have a single piece of clothing put together.
16:08Do you want us to rally tomorrow and help you out?
16:11Are you guys excited for today's runway?
16:12I'm really nervous, and I think I might end up going home.
16:25Good luck, guys.
16:26Let's do it!
16:28I can't believe that I'm using glue right now.
16:29Good morning, designers.
16:30How is everyone?
16:31Good.
16:32You will have two hours to send your models to the L'Oreal Paris hair and makeup rooms.
16:44The styling of these looks is very important.
16:47So, of course, for your styling, you'll be using the Lord & Taylor accessory wall.
16:50Use it very thoughtfully.
16:51All right.
16:52Thank you, everyone.
16:53Thank you, everyone.
16:55We're ready to rock and roll, sister.
17:00Just a very pale face, maybe a rosy cheek.
17:08I'm thinking really bright, kind of coral lip.
17:11The muses kiss.
17:12It's a gorgeous girl.
17:13That one's really beautiful.
17:14I like the orange in there.
17:23I'm thinking just really beautiful blowout.
17:25So, we'll put a little, uh, root lift in there.
17:28Just get a little volume.
17:29Yeah.
17:30Really, like, sleek back ponytail because I need to show powerful chic.
17:36Okay.
17:37Okay.
17:38Yes, definitely.
17:39But if you ever stop, shine, Sarah will give it a really nice polish.
17:42Where's my thread?
17:44Designers, you and your models and I are going down to the runway for our first runway show.
17:51It's very exciting.
17:53So, please follow me.
17:57Hi, everybody.
17:58Hi.
17:59Welcome to the runway.
18:00As you know, in fashion, one day you're in and the next day you're out.
18:15There are 16 of you here and after tonight there will be 15.
18:19For this season of Project Runway, every challenge will be a team challenge.
18:23You have to collaborate, communicate, and work together to be successful.
18:28For this first challenge we divided you in two teams of eight.
18:31Your inspiration was none other than New York City.
18:34We asked you to create an individual look that showcases your point of view as a designer.
18:39The winner of Project Runway will receive $50,000 in technology and office space from HP and Intel to bring your creativity to life and run your business.
18:48A fashion spread in Marie Claire Magazine.
18:50A 2013 Lexus GS.
18:52Wow.
18:53Wow.
18:54That's crazy.
18:56$100,000 from Laurel Paris Advanced Hair Care to start your own line.
19:01Wow.
19:02Wow.
19:03And the chance to design and sell an exclusive collection at Lord & Taylor.
19:07Wow.
19:08Cool, right?
19:09Oh my gosh.
19:10Yeah.
19:11And the model paired with the winner of Project Runway will win a fashion spread in Marie Claire Magazine
19:15and $25,000 from Laurel Paris Advanced Hair Care.
19:18Okay, let's meet the judges.
19:20First, we have a new judge to introduce.
19:23We are very excited to welcome acclaimed fashion designer, Zach Posen.
19:28Hey.
19:30Fashion director for Marie Claire Magazine, Nina Garcia.
19:33Welcome, designer.
19:35And our guest judge for today, who was once in your shoes, fashion designer Christian Siriano.
19:40Hi.
19:41Hello.
19:42We will score your designs as they come down the runway.
19:45One member from the winning team will be the winner of this challenge, and one member from the losing team will be out.
19:52Okay?
19:53Let's start the show.
19:54So excited.
19:55She looks amazing.
19:56It looks so good.
19:57I am so confident about my direction, my point of view.
20:11Everything about me is presented in this design, and it's flawless.
20:24I love the way it turned out.
20:26My model is walking it out.
20:28I'm just so happy.
20:30I did what I set out to do, and I'm proud of myself.
20:45My dress looks beautiful coming down the runway.
20:48Very sporty.
20:49It just glows and flows.
20:54I realize I've achieved my vision.
21:01I'm perfect.
21:06I'm completely excited.
21:13The material, it's got this little slight subtle movement to it, and I'm loving it.
21:22I'm watching my model walk down the runway, and she feels like she's almost my girl.
21:29Almost.
21:30I could have taken it to a little punchier level, but I finally feel like I might not go home.
21:38I'm okay with it.
21:41I'm happy with my garment, and it does represent myself, but I feel like it just doesn't stand
21:51out.
21:52I know I could have done so much better.
21:56I was playing too safe.
21:58I hope we win, so I don't have to worry about it.
22:06As my model is walking down the runway, I'm feeling a little better about the dress because
22:11it looks decent.
22:13I am seeing that it has a different point of view than from the other designers, and I'm
22:19hoping that the judges can see that in a positive way.
22:25I'm still not going down my current shirt, where I'm feeling.
22:30This suit represents me, my point of view as a designer, and my aesthetic and my tailoring
22:35skills.
22:36I made that outfit in one day and it totally rocked
22:45The other team there's some pieces that I don't love but majority of what they do
22:51I really really love they definitely have more drama and they definitely look more finished than my teams
22:59I'm feeling a little worried
23:06She looks adorable
23:12I'm super excited this is probably the most surreal moment I've ever had
23:16I'm just happy it looks so good
23:29I'm feeling good because it's like floating
23:32My garment actually looks nice and looks like something I feel the judges like
23:42I feel very confident about my look
23:52I hope like the judges they're gonna like it
23:57I hope like the judges they're gonna like it
24:03I like the dark thing too
24:04Thank you
24:05Thank you
24:05As my look comes down the runway I feel really good about it just because it's clean and classic
24:16I'm just very eager to see what the judges have to say about it
24:26Really good, very good
24:27Thank you
24:28I'm like horrified at this mess I put together I can't believe that I sent that down the runway
24:40My team has to win this challenge and if we don't I know I'm in I'm in trouble
24:50I could not be happier
24:59Okay, I'm happy I can breathe
25:04It just couldn't have represented me any better as a designer and I'm so ecstatic that this is what the judges are seeing first off
25:12As my look comes down the runway I am really happy with it
25:24I think it's beautiful
25:36I feel great about my look I'm using a material that no one has used before it's this waxed denim
25:49It's got a really strong conviction and will of character for the woman that's wearing it
25:55I think that it's the strongest look of our team
26:03I'm seeing on the runway that the other team definitely had a few struggles in their collection
26:08And I would have had to have said something if I was on that team
26:12There was like several strong pieces within their collection, but I'm still confident about my team
26:19Designers there will be a winning team and a losing team
26:28One member from the winning team will be the winner of this challenge and one member from the losing team will be out
26:41Designers one member from the winning team will be the winner of this challenge
26:45and one member from the losing team will be out team keeping it real you are the
26:56winning team dream team you are the losing team we're going to talk to the
27:07top three designers from the winning team first and then we will talk to the
27:11bottom three from the losing team dream team thank you you can leave the runway
27:22Daniel Richard Patricia you have the highest scores
27:35Daniel tell us about your luck we had taken a boat ride on the river and I got
27:40inspiration from the shapes of the the buildings that were along the river and
27:43so I just did a really simple classic silk wool crepe suit with a skinny pant I am
27:50very impressed she looks super chic and it looks super expensive I like the fact
27:56that you gave her a shorter sleeve the shorter pant and it could be done in many
28:01colors colors yeah there's no zipper in the front right no it just crosses over I
28:07think the neckline is really beautiful but very subtle but I think it's really really
28:10chic did you like the team dynamic oh yes everybody here we all get along because
28:15we have to work together to move forward thank you Daniel Richard tell us about
28:20your look I'm from California and upon landing at the airport all I saw was
28:25buildings and concrete and I used to trees and stuff everywhere so immediately
28:29when we got this challenge assigned to us I thought of gray and balanced it with
28:33black I think it looks very urban it's easy it's sporty but I also see the
28:40influence of New York I like that you played with asymmetry and it's flattering
28:44which through asymmetry is not the easiest I like to address a lot I like it
28:49that it has one short sleeve and one long sleeve it's like a great basic but you
28:54don't look schlumpy in it thank you Richard thanks Patricia tell us about your look as
28:59as we were leaving the city and we were on the boat I start to see the different shapes of the
29:05windows and then I thought of the cubist artists and I said okay maybe if I work in my design
29:14aesthetics of hand printing fabric and then it was really important to keep the blue coming through
29:21because in fashion you want something that's exciting and electric so I chose that really strong
29:27cobalt blue and then when they turn around she's a talker yes or no I know she's a talker I really
29:35love how you manipulated the leather to have the idea to do that I think is genius I like that they look
29:42like little cityscapes but I think the the time and effort of all the handwork I think is why it's such
29:49a great piece I think it was a good idea to keep the shape very simple because otherwise I think it
29:56would have missed on all that work that you've done and I think those little panels gives it a movement
30:02which that shape doesn't really have thank you okay we've heard what you had to say we can leave the
30:08runway thank you dream team you are the losing team James Cindy and Emily the three of you have
30:24the lowest scores on your team okay let's bring out your models okay I'm gonna start with you James tell
30:34us about your look I personally love doing a lot of color blocking and initially the top was to be
30:41color blocked as well but the team decided that it would be too simple and that I needed some more detail
30:49do you think that they steered you maybe in the wrong direction I just really wish that I would have stuck
30:55with my gut feeling on the first initial design that I did to me the pleating on top looks a little
30:59chewed up the whole thing feels a little pedestrian there's nothing wrong with your outfit it is just
31:06not inspiring it doesn't say anything to me about what you're about there were actually some great
31:12pieces that came down the runway from you guys like to for example I really liked yours the black and
31:17white was really cool of them and Benjamin we actually liked yours as well where there is really
31:22like something really that we hadn't seen before you know and you make a pencil skirt there's just not
31:28enough there thank you Emily tell us about your look okay well originally there was going to be kind
31:39of a fitted dress that was going to be out of this fabric and I just I think I realized I was drowning way
31:45too late in the game and just I really ran out of time I don't know what went wrong here but it looks
31:51like my eight-year-old daughter made it it looks like the sewing machine just ate it up can I see the
31:56back for a second in the sleeve and in the shoulder I'm kind of thinking that you have some type of
32:02sculptural innovation idea which I kind of would have wanted to see can we see what this looks like
32:08when you take this thing off I mean it's like a shredded piece of I have to say that in 11 seasons that
32:17we've done this I have never seen such an unfinished garment walk down the runway and team could anybody
32:27have lent her some fabric yes and we helped her construct this I mean as of this morning she had
32:32nothing she really had good ideas and it's just it's unfortunate to see the designs there the sketches
32:37were amazing that we saw I see what you and your team members see in what's happening right there I get
32:45it but I think it's really important to have your craft ready to go obviously taste design eye craft
32:54in a hand or what it's gonna take to win this competition so you know I think you have to find
32:59at least something within that that you are strong at and bring it I agree thank you Emily okay Cindy you're
33:08next from the rooftop of the Atlas I saw a building that had a checkerboard pattern painted on the side
33:15and when I saw this print at mood it reminded me of the colors of the city it's all just kind of
33:22jumbled and muted and running together did anyone give you thumbs up thumbs down sideways this was
33:29planned to be kind of a long top over narrow Navy pants but the team thought that this print was so
33:36beautiful that I should extend it and show more of the print can you guys raise your hand who thought
33:43this print was so beautiful I actually thought it was really pretty well pretty compared to it was
33:48gonna be a shirt that went to her knee with pants and as a team we felt like if you're gonna do that you
33:55might as well use as a gown because you could see the whole entire print it makes more sense for what
33:59you're trying to do with that fabric to me this dress is not attractive at all I love mixing patterns but
34:06they kind of got to go together there is nothing New York about this there's nothing urban about it I
34:14actually think maybe I'm the only one that's a little bit excited that it is a gown because I
34:18didn't think with like a Navy pant then you would have had four different fabrications and it would
34:22have been even worse but I do think that it has you know no kind of designer quality to it I want to
34:28know who you are as a designer and this is confusing to me this is not me well this is the first challenge so I
34:35really you know I want to see who you are as a designer I don't think the construction is that
34:39interesting and the prints are sort of jarring together it's hard for me thank you Cindy the sad
34:46thing is I gave your team a lot of high scores but the low ones really overpowered the highs keep
34:54that in mind you have to look out for your team if you have one hole in a boat the whole boat sinks okay
34:59we've heard what you had to say we're gonna have a little chat you can use the runway thank you
35:06before we start talking about specific designers I just want to talk about the team challenge which I
35:12think is kind of great I mean it's a little scary because you're really dependent on other people I like
35:19it because it's another set of eyes that are going to be giving an opinion and hopefully the bar gets
35:25traced they judge them before we get to judge them they have to decide if they're being truthful with
35:31their advice because when it gets down like what if they're telling each other it's not so good or if
35:35it is good they're gonna be like this is great and as the competition goes on the good souls and good
35:42hearts will come through okay let's talk about the designers that we did like keeping it real was the
35:49winning team I really like this team I liked how collaborative they were with each other they loved
35:54each other let's talk about Patricia we don't really see that that much that people actually go and
35:59manipulate the fabric to that extent she painted it she did an interesting overlay I think she brings an
36:06artistic element absolutely yeah yes we'd love I like that she's a strong female point of view we'll see
36:13where it goes let's talk about Daniel what he did in one day was pretty amazing beautiful that shoulder
36:20to do that shoulder is tough that jacket is interesting and it was beautifully done let's
36:25talk about Richard it's straightforward it's a Jersey dress and it worked and that's urban in New York you
36:31can dress it up you can dress it down you could wear it with a combat boots you can wear your ballerina
36:34flats you can wear high heels it's got a versatility to it it's kind of a no-brainer it looked effortless and
36:40easy and I think that sometimes can be harder than creating something like Daniel's which is sculptural
36:46and tailored sometimes the most effortless stress is the hardest to create okay let's talk about the
36:51dream team that wasn't so great well the team wasn't that bad it's just that there were some yes lower
36:58moments in the presentation let's talk about James I mean James really didn't do a whole lot it was very
37:05mall it was like intern couture it was the shell the chewed-up shell the shell is packed let's talk
37:12about Cindy am I wrong with how is this inspired by New York the dress felt old and sad yes it was not
37:19necessarily the most tasteful Emily really I don't know it's really that was but ugly I mean it really
37:29it was a hot mess I mean a shredded hot mess but I have to say I thought it was interesting when I
37:37asked the designers if they thought she had any potential that's what they said yeah I saw what
37:45they were seeing which was a fabric and a storyboard and her team liked her so okay so we've made our
37:51decision great let's bring them back up the six of you have the highest and the lowest scores one of
38:09you from the winning team will be the winner of this challenge and one of you from the losing team will be
38:17out one of you from the winning team will be the winner of this challenge and one of you from the
38:28losing team will be out Daniel congratulations you are the winner of this challenge first challenge thank
38:41you thank you thank you very much you're in you can leave the runway thank you it can't explain how happy I

39:27you're in
39:36you can leave the runway thank you Emily I'm sorry that means you're out
39:52it sucks being out first I'm just kind of sad that I didn't even get to show the judges what I could
40:07really do you tried and she's really disappointing you know as wonderful as it is to be on the runway this is always going to be an outcome so I have to send you to the workroom to clean up your space okay
40:28I feel like this whole experience is going to help me get my priorities straight it's definitely given me a lot to think about as far as what I want to do and what I am even able to do I came here looking for direction and I think through this I'm going to be able to find it
40:34this season on Project Runway we're sending each of you to a different European country
41:03what
