00:00My name is Keeney, and I'm from season 13 of Project Runway.
00:10I did fantastic on my season.
00:13I came in the top three, but this time I need to win this thing.
00:18I want this so freaking bad that I can taste it.
00:23I'm Emily, and I'm from season 13.
00:26Last season, I wasn't competitive enough.
00:29But this season, I really want to win.
00:33My biggest competition is Keeney.
00:35It's much quicker than I am.
00:37I'm so excited to see you.
00:41My name is Faith, and I have come back because I want to show how much more is in me as a designer.
00:50I am very competitive.
00:53Hello, girl!
00:54I'm Mitchell.
00:56On my season, I was eliminated unjustly because there were way uglier dresses on the runway that day.
01:02So I'm here to come back with vengeance.
01:05You guys ready?
01:06I'm ready.
01:07Claws are out.
01:08Like, I'm not here to play.
01:09I'm here to win.
01:09My name is Sam, and I was runner-up on Project Runway Under the Gun.
01:18That changed a lot for me.
01:19I got invited to do fashion shows, like, all over the country.
01:23I never thought that was going to be my life.
01:26My name is Asha.
01:26I came in third on Project Runway Under the Gun.
01:29Being on Under the Gun really made me know that this is, you know, what I'm destined to do.
01:33I am so excited to be designing with my best friend Asha again.
01:40Oh, I love it.
01:43My name is Alexander, and I was on season 12.
01:45I've been working on theater the past two years, Broadway and touring and traveling.
01:50My name is Ken.
01:52A lot of things have changed since season 12.
01:54I feel like I'm a better designer.
01:55I know exactly what I want to do.
01:57Hey, how are you?
01:59I know Ken and I had drama before.
02:01Girl, you got to move that, honey.
02:03I got a big-ass suitcase, bigger than you.
02:05I'm almost done.
02:11That is not called for.
02:13I'm not going to deal with it.
02:15I'm a little calmer.
02:16I'm Liana, and I was on season 11.
02:22Since the show ended, I had a baby, got married.
02:26I went full-time with my label, so I've been constant showing collections.
02:30I want to win the money because having a fashion business is extremely expensive.
02:36My name is Stella, and I competed on season 5, and the judges got it wrong.
02:41I'm competitive, but I'm not here to stab anybody in the back.
02:45I'd rather shoot somebody.
02:48Daniel.
02:49How are you doing?
02:50Good.
02:50My name is Daniel, and I was on season 1 and 2 of Project Runway.
02:54I own a wedding chapel in Los Angeles.
02:56I design wedding dresses.
02:58It's been 10 years, but I am back finally to win.
03:03My name is Valerie, and I competed on season 8.
03:06In my season, I got so close to winning challenges, but I never won one.
03:10Oh, my God.
03:11I'm so glad you're in it.
03:12You know, it's redemption.
03:13Throw time's a charm.
03:15Or three strikes, you're out.
03:16Yeah.
03:17I don't know.
03:20My name's Dom.
03:21I was on season 12 of Project Runway, and I won.
03:24It's a huge deal because I'm still building a business.
03:27One of my favorite projects is working on stuff for Samuel L. Jackson's wife.
03:30It's really cool to be able to compete with talented designers who are basically the best.
03:35Hi.
03:37Here's the winner.
03:39She's got to go down.
03:40Oh, no.
03:41I personally don't care that a former winner's here.
03:47It's a brand new competition.
03:48Oh, there's more.
03:49No freaking way.
03:50Daniel and Stella are the veterans of Project Runway.
03:54So it's almost like Beyonce and Jay-Z walked in a room.
03:58I'm starstruck.
03:59I'm going to be butting heads with Sam.
04:03I already know it.
04:04Sam's an undercover bitch.
04:06I did some blogging about season 13.
04:10Sometimes I made some jokes at some people's expense, and some of those people might be here.
04:13Mitchell makes for decent television and horrible dresses.
04:18Bitch.
04:19Alyssa!
04:22Hi!
04:24Welcome to Project Runway All-Stars.
04:27Family reunion's over.
04:28It is time to get to work.
04:35I'm Alyssa Milano, and I am so excited to be back as your host for the toughest All-Stars season ever.
04:43With no immunity on All-Stars, it's every designer for themselves.
04:47You'll find out the prize details before your first runway.
04:51And you'll be staying here at Hudson Hotel, which is lucky, because you're going to need as much rest as you can get.
05:00Your mentor this season is Senior Fashion Editor of Marie Claire Magazine's Zanna Roberts-Rossi.
05:06And to critique your work, I'll be joined by designers Isaac Mizrahi and Marquesa's Georgina Chapman, as well as some of the biggest names in fashion and entertainment.
05:18Are you ready for your first challenge?
05:20Yes!
05:20Because all the best designs have a piece of you in them, your inspiration should come from the moment in your life when you realized you were destined to become a designer.
05:32It seems like it's going to be really easy, but I don't want to jinx myself.
05:39Your budget is $200.
05:42Okay.
05:43And you'll be sketching inside mood.
05:47My fellow judges will be joining me to witness your first runway tomorrow.
05:52Oh, Lord.
05:53This is happening.
05:54This is real.
05:55Game time.
05:56I can't wait to see your baton-forward look.
06:00So good luck.
06:08I grew up in a family where women were the strongest, especially my mom.
06:13So I see clothes as armors.
06:15I decided to make a jumpsuit.
06:18The bottom's going to be this very flowy palazzo pants.
06:22And in the top is a structure, a piece with cutouts like an armor.
06:26Because girls are warriors.
06:32My parents were addicts, so I used to play fantasy video games as a kid to help me separate my toxic life at home into this fantasy world.
06:41I'm sketching a floral frock situation and a giant, beautiful tulle skirt.
06:49That's just going to be magical.
06:50My mother's friend, she was into fashion illustration.
06:57I took one of her sketches home one day, and I would just trace over it.
07:02I was just like, I want to do this.
07:03I'm making a dress.
07:05And the jacket is going to have a peplum, which is what I'm kind of known for.
07:08I don't know about you guys, but I'm ready to go shopping.
07:11Let's do it.
07:17I am making this cool kind of crossbody leather armored cocktail dress.
07:23My mom is the ultimate OG warrior queen, and she made me a lace Queen Nefertiti hat.
07:29Just seeing her creativity, it's the reason why I am a designer.
07:34Get out of my way.
07:37Yeah, three of the white, and then one of everything else.
07:40I decided to pull my strengths, which is, you know, geometry, clean lines, to create like a puzzle.
07:47It's fresh, and I think it's something I would wear.
07:49You're my inspiration today.
07:51Black and white.
07:52Back in the 90s, I was getting really into jackets.
07:56I started imagining certain types of jackets, and it was at that time I realized I have to make them.
08:01My idea is to tailor a jacket.
08:04So I selected a fabric.
08:05It's like a bit of an aqua.
08:07It feels like some sort of stream water.
08:09Beautiful.
08:10Let me get one yard each.
08:12Designers, 10 minutes.
08:14Make a yard and a half.
08:15Two.
08:16Two yards each.
08:16I totally underestimated how fast 30 minutes goes by.
08:20Crap, am I going to get cut again?
08:23Designers, come downstairs.
08:25Time's up.
08:26Thank you so much.
08:27Bye.
08:27Thank you, Moon.
08:28Thank you, Swatch.
08:36Dang, this is nice.
08:38I'm walking in the work room.
08:39It's amazing.
08:40It's beautiful.
08:41Wow.
08:42This is awesome.
08:43Having access to the tools in the Brothers Sewing and Embroidery Studio is awesome.
08:48Let's go look at the wall.
08:50I feel like a Band-Aid or something.
09:02Are you bleeding?
09:03Yeah.
09:04Already?
09:05I sliced a tip of my finger off.
09:08It's bad.
09:09There's blood everywhere.
09:12Coming up on Project Runway All Stars.
09:15Holy f***.
09:15This challenge is about what you know.
09:18Do you have anything else?
09:19I'm a little scared of some people.
09:21Well, you can't win since you won our season.
09:23Says who?
09:24Drama queen.
09:29F***.
09:31I feel like a Band-Aid or something.
09:32Are you bleeding?
09:33Yeah.
09:34Already?
09:35I sliced a tip of my finger off.
09:37Whoa.
09:38F***.
09:39This is like a violinist who like smashes his finger before the concerto.
09:44Oh my God.
09:45Daniel.
09:46It's like literally 30 seconds into the day.
09:49Drama queen.
09:50You're going to be okay.
09:51Being back in the workroom is like working out for the first time again.
10:01And then you get those muscle legs.
10:02That's what it feels like.
10:05There are definitely three people that I am very intimidated by.
10:08Asha.
10:09I know what she can do under pressure.
10:11And it's amazing.
10:12Dom won this whole shebang.
10:15And Keene can sew like a freaking warlock.
10:19Like that man is a f***ing damn genius.
10:27Hey Keene.
10:29Yes.
10:30What you making?
10:31Let me show you my fabrics.
10:33Dom is going to be the person I'm going to look out for.
10:35Well you can't win since you won our season of Project Runway so.
10:38What?
10:38Says who?
10:39Says everybody.
10:41I don't know what you heard but.
10:41We're out to kill.
10:45I'm armed okay.
10:46Some people are like really fast.
10:49Liana already has heated pants and like a cut top.
10:53I'm a little scared of some people.
10:59Hi.
11:00Hi.
11:01Welcome designers.
11:02It is so nice to see so many familiar faces in the room.
11:06Santa was actually a judge on Project Runway under the gun.
11:09And I think that she's absolutely amazing.
11:12As Marie Claire's senior fashion editor I am here to guide you.
11:14So you must use me before it's too late and you're on the runway.
11:19So let's get started.
11:20Hi Ash.
11:20How are you?
11:22Good to see you.
11:24In a different capacity.
11:25Oh yeah.
11:25Absolutely.
11:26What is inspiring this look?
11:28My name is African.
11:30My parents are really proud of where we come from.
11:32So that's always like really been a part of me.
11:34Okay.
11:35So how's that translating into this?
11:36The fact that it has this like tribal rhythm with the lines.
11:40Because I hate to be kind of like you know really obvious.
11:43Ash's design kind of looks like it's been done before.
11:48My pivotal moment was when my mom brought home a Vogue magazine.
11:52And I just remember the cover.
11:54It was just a big black blur of a blonde lady with red lips.
11:59I'm also like the rock and roll aspect where I grommet and I lace and I stud and I spike.
12:04If that is you as a designer we need a massive injection of rock and roll in this look.
12:09Okay.
12:10My worry that these fabrics are so contradictory.
12:13You do absolutely have to bring this moment into this moment.
12:17Do you have anything else?
12:18No.
12:19The look is inspired by freedom.
12:23I escaped East Germany.
12:24So it represents a little bit the Berlin Wall.
12:27They were able to spray paint it.
12:29If you're inspired by graffiti, why wouldn't you just do graffiti on a fabric?
12:33There will be still paint on it.
12:36I started sewing when I was 10 years old.
12:38My aunt helped me to produce the garment that I sketched out.
12:41And I fell in love with design.
12:43It's that moment where you can put something on paper and press print on your mind.
12:48And show the world what you're actually thinking.
12:50Love that.
12:50Perfect.
12:51If I got in an elevator with you and you told me that I'd be like, sign me up.
12:54How are you feeling about stepping onto the runway again?
12:56Well, I'll tell you what happened.
12:56Just today, in the first five minutes, I sliced my hand and everyone's way ahead of me in terms of time.
13:03They're not going to give two hoots about cutting your finger.
13:05Don't even mention it.
13:06I've never worked or tailored LeMay before.
13:08This challenge is about what you know, what you do, your DNA.
13:13Like, why would you use something that you've never used before?
13:16For me, it's tailoring anything.
13:17I found a thing in the trash can for a catwalk show.
13:21And you had to put together five looks.
13:23And I got really inspired by that.
13:25Okay, so how is that trash can moment inspiring this look?
13:29I like to do street wear with, like, a luxury twist.
13:32So I like to use really nice, fine fabrics.
13:35When you're a gay kid and, like, everyone knows you're gay, you can't really play sports because people look at you funny in the locker room.
13:40What? Really?
13:41I don't know.
13:42I wish I had known better when I was a kid.
13:45I actually had seen, like, Project Runway and I was like, oh, that's a competition.
13:48Like, I'll do that.
13:50Brocade is a signature fabric that I like to use.
13:53This fabric is amazing.
13:54Love this.
13:54Ken has this really beautiful fabric that just looks like money.
14:00It's going to be so pretty on the runway.
14:03The idea of a peplum is very 2005.
14:06There should be something about this shape that feels a bit more evolved.
14:12Okay.
14:12I'm a child of the 80s, and music played a big part of me growing up.
14:16You know, it was new wave, goth, all that kind of music.
14:19This could go old lady pretty quickly.
14:21It feels a little bit Mother of the Bride at a very dark, gothic wedding.
14:26Just saying.
14:27I'm excited to hear more about this dress.
14:30It's actually a jumpsuit.
14:31It is?
14:32Wow.
14:33Okay.
14:33My concern.
14:35It's so flimsy.
14:37If this girl has any chest, she's going to fall out of that.
14:42Yes.
14:42Why did you choose the cocoon shape?
14:44I felt that this would be, like, a really fashion-forward look just because it's something you don't see very often.
14:48I love the idea of the pink with the black.
14:51Big fan of that.
14:52I was going to make a jacket.
14:53Why not?
14:54I don't know if I have the time.
14:55If the fittings go well, I think I can do it.
14:57Good luck.
14:58Thanks, Anna.
14:59Designers, I am not seeing a lot of your inspiration in these designs.
15:04And Marie Claire, I edit fashion stories for a living.
15:07I need you guys to edit your story.
15:09Luckily, we have some great accessories partners with us on All Stars this season.
15:12The bubble bar jewelry wall, and the Chinese laundry shoe wall.
15:16Use them wisely.
15:18And let's not forget your hair and makeup.
15:20Very important to a finished look.
15:22The Schwarzkopf hair team and the Laura Geller makeup team will be here with you tomorrow morning.
15:26Let's kick off this season with the best runway we've ever had on All Stars.
15:31Good luck, guys.
15:32I love a very, very powerful silhouette.
15:52Zana told me that my look basically looks dated.
15:55So I decided to drape it and change the silhouette of it.
15:58Make it innovative.
15:59Oh, yeah.
16:03I think it looks great on her.
16:04I'm feeling really good about this.
16:06I got the top on the model.
16:08I realized there's not enough time to pull this off.
16:11And I should have adjusted my design.
16:13I'm a dumbass.
16:15I just gotta fix your boobie.
16:17You don't like it?
16:18Zana wasn't a big fan of my look.
16:20But I love it.
16:21So I'm going for it.
16:22You will be able to buy this soon.
16:24Okay?
16:25I love it.
16:26Zana said that my top is too flimsy.
16:29So I decided to pipe the whole edge because I know this will make it a lot firmer.
16:35We are done.
16:36That's it?
16:36Yep.
16:37Bye, guys.
16:38Bye.
16:38Bye.
16:39Bye.
16:39Bye.
16:45Oh, my God, guys.
16:46We only have 30 minutes to the end of the day.
16:50I look over at Daniel's workstation and I just see a mess.
16:53And I see the same thing that was on the form five hours ago.
17:02Guys, it's time.
17:04No.
17:04Over.
17:05I'm feeling somewhere between confident and, like, holy s**t, I've got too much to do.
17:13Coming up on Project Runway All-Stars.
17:15Lunchtime.
17:16Time is running out.
17:17Every man put himself.
17:19My brain's in denial.
17:21Oh, boy.
17:21F**k.
17:22We are going to be, like, treated to the first nude model in Project Runway history.
17:27Ooh.
17:35All right, guys.
17:37Two hours.
17:37Let's make magic happen.
17:38Morning on the runway, I have a serious case of bubble guts.
17:41I'm just, like, ready to get this jacket finished.
17:44This one's for my mama.
17:46Every man for themselves today.
17:52When do our models come in?
17:53Sure.
17:54I hope so.
17:55My brain's in denial over what time it is right now because of the lack of sleep.
17:59Coming back as a winner, you have to beat on top of your game because you've won already.
18:05It's actually really hard.
18:13I have so much left to do.
18:15It's ridiculous.
18:16I still haven't pieced together my front to the back.
18:19The sleeves have not been attached.
18:20There's no collar.
18:21There's no lapel.
18:23There's no hand finishing on there, and there's no closure.
18:26And time is running out.
18:27Hi.
18:29It's got pockets now.
18:31I'm allowed to paint it, so I just did a quick paint.
18:33How's that?
18:35Does that feel better?
18:36I'm going to add the zipper, and we're going to be good to go.
18:38Mitchell's dress just looks like he took three dresses, cut them all up, and, like, hot-glued
18:44them back together.
18:45Sam's making some basic romper.
18:47That's, like, an overlay.
18:49I don't get it.
18:52Hi.
18:52Hello.
18:54I'm Asha.
18:55I'm Lynn.
18:55Good to meet you.
18:56So what I'm thinking is kind of modern and messy a little bit.
18:59Okay.
18:59So if I was you, I'd probably do the top knot.
19:01I just want her to look, like, sporty and easy and cool.
19:03Body.
19:04Yeah, a lot of body.
19:05Yeah.
19:09I really want it to be a really edgy, like, runway look.
19:12Strong right here.
19:13I want to do something really fresh and young.
19:15I love Malibu.
19:17A little bit washed out.
19:18Okay.
19:19It just looks like a dream.
19:20Like a dream.
19:21That's exactly what I want.
19:24You guys, we have 30 minutes left.
19:26It's lunch time.
19:31Who's in trouble?
19:33I am.
19:34I'm losing the arms.
19:35That's what I thought.
19:36The time for arms.
19:37Daniel seems to have a little bit time management problems.
19:43I think he wants to do some kind of a trim.
19:46Ooh, another time.
19:47Look at that.
19:49Oh, boy.
19:5015 minutes!
19:52That looks like a fantasy goddess.
19:55Exactly.
19:56This is going to be the winning look because this high priestess is going to be the sexiest runway model you've ever seen.
20:0160 yards of soul.
20:06Give me a little like you pissed off.
20:09I love Ken's look.
20:11He made her look like a villain.
20:15She's not to be messed with, and I really love that because that's Ken.
20:18Kick ass.
20:18Yes.
20:20Yay!
20:21Oh, my gosh.
20:22I love it.
20:22She looks amazing.
20:24Oh, the shorts have pockets.
20:26Valerie's outfit is really strong.
20:27It has tons of details.
20:29The black and white contrast, all the peaks.
20:31It's beautiful.
20:32All right, you guys, that's time.
20:34Let's head to the runway.
20:36Woo!
20:37There's always a big amount of pressure for the first challenge because you don't want to be a first designer to go home.
20:44You're so fucked up.
20:46Let me just hold your hand right here for a second.
20:48Hold here?
20:49Yeah, here at the waist.
20:50Yeah, let's go.
20:52I am scared that Daniel's look is going to just split wide open.
20:56We are going to be, like, treated to the first nude model in Project Runway history.
21:02Coming up on Project Runway All-Stars.
21:05I love your look.
21:06You're the one to beat.
21:07Wow.
21:08It looks like her right boobies, like, down here, left boobies up here.
21:12It's just a failure.
21:13Oh, my God!
21:14The winner of Project Runway All-Stars will receive the opportunity to design an exclusive line of jewelry for bobblebar.com.
21:23The final say in fashion jewelry.
21:26A capsule footwear collection by Chinese Laundry.
21:29A fashion spread in Marie Claire and a position at the magazine as contributing editor.
21:34From Brothers Sewing and Embroidery, a complete sewing studio to launch their line.
21:39And to elevate their business and build their brand, a cash prize of $100,000.
21:49Hello, designers.
21:50Hi.
21:51Hello.
21:52Welcome to our new runway.
21:5413 of you have returned for the toughest All-Stars season so far.
21:59But only one of you will claim the Season 5 title and its grand prize.
22:03For your first challenge, we ask you to tap into the moment of your past that inspired you to become a designer.
22:10And use it for a fashion-forward look.
22:13Our judges are excited to see and hear more about your aesthetics.
22:16So let's meet them.
22:18First, co-founder and designer of Marquesa, Georgina Chapman.
22:21Hi, designers.
22:25Next, one of the most iconic names in American fashion, Mr. Isaac Mizrahi.
22:31Hi, kids.
22:31Hi.
22:33And our guest judge remembers all too well what it's like on your side of the runway.
22:38Since winning last season's All-Stars, he's produced collections for QVC, Lord & Taylor,
22:44and he has celebrities lining up for his designs.
22:47It's Season 10 and All-Stars winner, Dmitry Sholokov.
22:52Hi, guys.
22:55So remember, we're looking for your distinct point of view as a designer.
22:59And this season, we are judging blind.
23:01We will not know whose design is on the runway until the critique.
23:05So your signature style is more important than ever.
23:09Have a great show.
23:11I love making women feel powerful, and I like to empower them through clothing.
23:23She is going to kill somebody.
23:25I know, right?
23:26She looks insane.
23:28She looks fabulous.
23:29She's giving me life with no parole.
23:36I love this look.
23:38It's totally me.
23:42My aesthetic is very hard versus soft.
23:45I have a really strong signature style that shows up.
23:48I love the skirt.
23:56I think the garment is absolutely me.
24:00The inspiration was freedom.
24:03The freedom coming from East Germany,
24:04and the freedom of finally doing my own clothes.
24:08I think she looks amazing, badass, beautiful.
24:18All the things that I go for when I design.
24:21I design for the women that would have been queens back in the day.
24:26I am in love.
24:27Work that queen realness.
24:28Hey.
24:29It's high slit, girl.
24:36Woo-hoo!
24:36My work has the potential to be an incredible design,
24:39but the craftsmanship is way subpar.
24:43It's embarrassing.
24:44It's not the way I want to return to Project Runway.
24:54Oh, work, girl.
24:56That is 10 years of my identity as a designer
25:02going down the catwalk,
25:03and I'm really happy with it.
25:07It's got a little bit of, like, an athletic feel.
25:09It's definitely comfortable.
25:11It's that, like, really cool girl
25:12that, like, honestly just wants to look good for her selfies.
25:15I mean, it's gorgeous.
25:21It looks gorgeous, chic.
25:24It's flirty, fun, cute.
25:27Kitty, she's gone with the wind fabulous.
25:29Gone with the wind.
25:32It's this Park Avenue princess girl that I envisioned.
25:35This is unmistakably me,
25:37and that's what I want the judges to see.
25:39I love it.
25:48She looks fierce.
25:50My silhouettes tend to stay very basic and very simple,
25:52and then what I do to the fabric
25:54is what makes my trademark.
25:59I grew up knowing how to live with very little,
26:02and there's, like, a level of humility that comes with that,
26:04and I think that really shaped who I am as a designer.
26:11My model looks great,
26:12and I'm really excited about it
26:13because it's very me and geometric
26:15and very bright and fun,
26:17but also expensive looking.
26:20Valerie, that construction is immaculate.
26:23It looks like a print.
26:27I notice, like, the pleats and the pockets.
26:29Everything works.
26:30Like, nothing looks out of place,
26:31so I'm excited.
26:36I do make alternative punk or rock and roll clothes.
26:43I'm just hoping the judges notice
26:45I can take that alternative garment
26:48and make something that's marketable and pretty.
26:52I see, too.
27:02She looks beautiful.
27:04I really like what I've made,
27:06and I think she looks fantastical and ethereal.
27:08She looks like a bitchy queen.
27:11The only thing I'm hoping the judges don't notice
27:14is the fact that my dart side boob side
27:17is kind of out of place a little bit.
27:20I always see women as warriors,
27:30so my stamp is the combination of the femininity
27:33and, at the same time, the strong lines.
27:36And, of course, because of my Brazilian heritage,
27:38I always have, you know, a touch of sensuality.
27:41I hope this is the winning look
27:47because it really, truly represents who I am.
27:51I'm a passionate designer.
27:53I definitely like minimal stuff,
27:54but I definitely like romantic stuff, too.
27:56I kind of blend the two.
27:57Designers, you turned out an incredible first runway.
28:09You really showed us who you are.
28:11This is going to be a tough season.
28:14Now, if I call your name, please step forward.
28:16Dom, Sam, Stella, Keeney, Alexander, Emily, Fade.
28:29The seven of you are safe.
28:32And through to next week,
28:33you can head to the backstage lounge.
28:40Designers, three of you received the highest scores
28:42and three of you received the lowest scores.
28:46Someone will come out on top tonight
28:48and someone will be going home.
28:55Designers, three of you received the highest scores
28:57and three of you received the lowest scores.
29:00Liana, you're up first.
29:02Tell us about the story that inspired your look.
29:04I remember when I used to watch my mom get dressed.
29:07Whenever she put, like, an outfit that made her look amazing,
29:10it would just, you know, change her demeanor.
29:12So this was, like, the pivotal moment for me
29:14that I realized that I could bring beauty to the world
29:18by enhancing a woman's beauty and personality.
29:21I love your look.
29:22I really do.
29:23I'm just not wild about that print,
29:26but it does look flawless.
29:27What I love about this is the juxtaposition
29:30between fun and kind of expensive.
29:34It really strikes a balance.
29:35You have beautifully draped pants.
29:37And first, actually, I thought it was a skirt,
29:40but then I realized it was pants.
29:41It made it even cooler.
29:43It looks comfortable and sexy at the same time.
29:45I think it's beautiful.
29:49Hi, Ken.
29:49Hi, how are you?
29:50Tell us about your past that inspired this look.
29:53My inspiration in my childhood
29:55was from a family of single women.
29:58They were basically the power in the household.
30:00So I took that inspiration
30:02and wanted to create a power suit.
30:04I wanted it to be able to walk in a room
30:07and demand attention.
30:08Well, you've sold me.
30:12I mean, I love the fabric.
30:14It looks so expensive.
30:15It's a brocade, and this is actually a lace.
30:18The only thing I would say,
30:19it's not the most original dress I've seen,
30:21but it's exceptionally tailored.
30:24I agree with Georgina about the silhouette,
30:27but it has this kind of a relaxed,
30:29sportsy feel to it, and I love it.
30:31This looks fresh and young and youthful,
30:34and it's a power suit, and I love that.
30:35From this runway,
30:37it seems like you're the one to beat.
30:40Asha.
30:41My mom was a seamstress growing up,
30:43and for my first communion,
30:44she made me a white Queen Nefertiti crown.
30:47So, as a designer,
30:49I fell in love with this young woman
30:51who is kind of modern-day royalty.
30:54You obviously know how to make clothes,
30:56which is a pleasure,
30:57but I feel like I've seen that idea out there a lot.
31:03And so, in a challenge
31:04where we're supposed to get something fresh
31:07and individual about you,
31:09I'm getting really off the rack.
31:12What is it made out of?
31:13It's a pleather.
31:14I think maybe I would like to see
31:16more of the detailing.
31:17Like, you have these little details,
31:18which are really lovely.
31:20When you do use pleather instead of leather,
31:23you make it cheap-looking.
31:25If you go for leather, you go for leather.
31:27Hi, Daniel.
31:28What inspired you to become a designer?
31:30I fell in love with my lovely wife in class,
31:36and I knew that I had to impress her with a collection,
31:41so maybe, potentially, she would go out with me.
31:43So, originally, it was meant to be a tailored jacket
31:46because it's known for my tailoring.
31:48And right when the challenge began,
31:50I did slice my fingers and some scissors.
31:53Unfortunately, I had to work with this injury,
31:55and I give you the respect of knowing that.
31:57I know that it's poor quality.
31:59You haven't even heard our critique yet.
32:01What if we loved it?
32:02Oh, we're kidding.
32:02Oh, my God.
32:03No, I'm kidding.
32:04Oh, my God.
32:05No, listen to our critique first.
32:07Okay.
32:08So, you told this romantic story about wooing your wife,
32:12and yet I'm not sure how that story translated into this garment.
32:16It looks very restrained and confined.
32:19I just didn't get the connection.
32:21Regardless of whether you cut yourself,
32:23it just looks like so nothing.
32:26The length is nothing.
32:27The armhole is nothing.
32:28So, it's like, if purity is your thing,
32:31then we better see that from you.
32:34This fabric is beautiful,
32:35but it's not right for this design.
32:37So, I think even before the fingers happened,
32:40I don't think it was possibly going to work.
32:42I understand.
32:43Thank you for the criticism.
32:45Valerie, a very, very good friend.
32:48Sorry, she gave me a loan
32:50to buy my first industrial machine.
32:52And I remember sitting at my machine,
32:54and I just practiced lines and shapes,
32:57and that's when I knew
32:58this thing that I wanted all this time
33:00of becoming this, like, fabric magician,
33:03I finally got to do.
33:05I think that it's so much better without the jacket.
33:08Without?
33:09Without.
33:10Take it off.
33:10That is like...
33:12That's game-changing right there.
33:13That's so beautiful.
33:14I agree with Isaac.
33:15Maybe the jacket is a bit too much,
33:17but the jacket is beautiful,
33:18and it's very young and fresh.
33:20You've done a beautiful job.
33:22I really see who you are as a designer,
33:24and I love your use of color here.
33:26I think that degraded's very pushy.
33:28Those little shorts and those pleats
33:30are just so beautiful.
33:32You are a fabric magician.
33:34Thank you so much.
33:35Mitchell.
33:36I grew up unconventionally at best.
33:38It was a very hostile environment,
33:40so I used to find myself
33:42slaving away at video games,
33:45and eventually,
33:46I started drawing my characters' new costumes.
33:49A roommate saw my sketchbook,
33:51and she was like,
33:53oh, my God,
33:53these are amazing,
33:54and that planted the seed.
33:56Hey, you know what?
33:57Maybe you've got what it takes
33:58to be a designer.
33:59This shouldn't work together,
34:01and unfortunately here,
34:02it doesn't work together,
34:03but there's an idea here.
34:04I love this idea of the skirt,
34:07but you have to refine it.
34:08Like, your lining length is all wrong,
34:10and if you're gonna drape,
34:12the drape's gotta be perfect.
34:14It's a little, I think, unbalanced, right?
34:16Looks like her right boobies,
34:18like, down here.
34:19Left boobies up here.
34:21Well, I'm trying to find
34:22something positive about her,
34:23but it's almost like
34:24when you play and dress up,
34:26there are so many ideas,
34:27from this ballerina skirt
34:28to the asymmetry
34:30and the choices of fabrics.
34:32I don't quite understand it,
34:34and I don't think it's fashion.
34:35Okay, I respect that.
34:37Executing ideas is half the battle,
34:40but in your case,
34:42quality's a big issue.
34:44Thank you to all the designers.
34:45It's time for the judges and I
34:47to deliberate.
34:48Please join the others
34:49in the backstage lounge,
34:50and we'll call you back.
34:55Hi.
34:56Hi.
34:57Hey.
34:58Questions and answers.
35:00Who's in the top and bottom?
35:01Isaac sliced and diced me,
35:03like, so smoothly.
35:05I think Ken's gonna win this one.
35:06I do.
35:06What'd I say?
35:07They liked it.
35:09That was a really good runway.
35:11For the first runway of the season.
35:13There were some good highs.
35:15Yeah, let's talk about Valerie.
35:16With Valerie,
35:17it's fashion-forward,
35:18it's modern,
35:19it's young,
35:19and it's very wearable
35:20and approachable.
35:21When the jacket came up,
35:22I was like, yes,
35:23now I see what this is about,
35:25and it's kind of game-changing.
35:27We totally got her story from her.
35:29Her heart is in it
35:30in a very simple,
35:32profound way.
35:35And Leanna,
35:37I really like this,
35:38the dichotomy between
35:39the strong and the soft.
35:41Something felt cheap
35:42about the top to me.
35:43Looked a bit like a swimsuit.
35:45To me,
35:45there was a freshness
35:46about Leanna's.
35:48It had an unexpectedness to it.
35:50No, I get that.
35:54Ken.
35:55Ticked every box for me.
35:57I thought the cut was wonderful,
35:59I thought the attitude was wonderful,
36:00and the fabrication was spot on.
36:03It was pretty flawless.
36:04Also,
36:05like, you got a sense
36:06of who this person was
36:07by looking at that two-piece dress.
36:12Now let's talk about
36:13the least successful designers.
36:15Asha.
36:16I think the dress was fine,
36:17it just wasn't enough,
36:18but there was nothing wrong with it.
36:20Except it was, like,
36:21so boring.
36:22Yes.
36:22And pleather.
36:23It looked not just like pleather,
36:24but, like, doubled pleather.
36:26You know, it was, like, so heavy.
36:30Okay, let's talk about Mitchell.
36:32The instincts were crazy.
36:34Like, I understand
36:35that he had an idea
36:36that was different
36:37and interesting,
36:38but it just wasn't attractive
36:40at all.
36:41It looked very schizophrenic to me,
36:43you know,
36:43it's, like, so many ideas.
36:44It makes me want to see
36:45what he's going to do next.
36:47It was that idea
36:48that he was sort of
36:49throwing everything at the wall
36:50and seeing what would happen,
36:51totally uninhibited,
36:52that I sort of appreciate.
36:56So let's talk about Daniel.
36:58I'm confused.
37:00I think he's confused,
37:01and I think that's the problem.
37:02You guys like that fabric?
37:03I like the color,
37:04but not the fabric for that.
37:06Sorry, Daniel.
37:08I'm sorry, darling.
37:09I didn't get his inspiration
37:11as it related to how he started.
37:14I got his life story.
37:15I'm still confused.
37:16This is a tricky one, huh?
37:23But I think we know
37:23what we should do.
37:25Yeah.
37:26Okay, great.
37:27Let's bring him back out.
37:35Designers,
37:35it was a great first runway,
37:37and the judges and I
37:38have been given
37:39a very tough task tonight.
37:42But we have finally made
37:45our decision.
37:52Rihanna, you did a great job,
37:55and you're safe.
37:56You can leave the runway.
37:57Thanks.
38:01Ken and Valerie,
38:02one of you is the winner
38:03of this week's challenge.
38:04And that designer is...
38:10Valerie.
38:11Shut it.
38:12I mean, it's...
38:13Good job.
38:15I just never won a challenge,
38:17so this is really special.
38:19Congratulations.
38:20Thank you so, so much.
38:21And also to you, Ken.
38:22Great job.
38:23We'll see you both next week,
38:24and you can leave the runway.
38:25Thank you so much.
38:27Good job.
38:27Thanks.
38:29So I did the impossible.
38:31Up and...
38:33First challenge one ever!
38:39Finally on the ride!
38:42I'm really, really thankful
38:43for the win.
38:44Thanks!
38:44But I'm here to win
38:45the war, not the battle.
38:46You did it.
38:46You did it.
38:49And now for the least
38:51successful designs.
38:53Asha, you had a low score,
38:55but you are safe.
38:57Thank you so much.
38:58You can leave the runway.
39:03And that leaves
39:04Mitchell and Daniel.
39:06Mitchell,
39:07we appreciate that
39:08you really went for it
39:10and gave us something unique,
39:11but you just had
39:13too many ideas
39:14that didn't come together.
39:16Daniel,
39:17we admire the passion
39:18that you bring to your work,
39:19but your story
39:20was so convoluted.
39:22You said that
39:23your signature style
39:24is about tailoring,
39:25but we didn't see
39:27a lot of that
39:27in your look.
39:28In fact,
39:29we still don't feel
39:30that we know
39:32who either of you
39:33are as designers.
39:35So we're going to do
39:36something we've never done
39:37on the first challenge before.
39:38Both of you
39:47will get a second chance
39:49to show us
39:52what you've got.
39:53Wow.
39:55But you have to promise
39:57to raise your game
39:58if you want to stay
39:59in this competition.
40:00You got it?
40:00Yes, ma'am.
40:01Got it.
40:03You can leave the runway.
40:06I'm like, thank God.
40:07I get to stay
40:08and I get to prove myself
40:10and prove why I'm an all-star
40:11and go forward.
40:13Daniel.
40:14Oh, my gosh.
40:15Who's safe?
40:16Double elimination.
40:18No.
40:18No.
40:19No, we're just kidding.
40:20We're both safe.
40:21Yeah.
40:21What?
40:22What?
40:23What?
40:23What?
40:23What?
40:25Either one of us
40:26could have gone home.
40:27I actually thought
40:27it could have been
40:28a double elimination.
40:29It was that kind of
40:30poor of a showing.
40:31The judges felt that
40:32they still don't know
40:33who we are as designers,
40:34so they couldn't judge
40:35appropriately.
40:36Crazy, right?
