A violent clash between rival gang members inside the Maximum Security Prison has resulted in the fatal stabbing of one inmate, with two others left hospitalized.

00:00A full-scale investigation is underway into the violent clash between warring gang affiliates
00:06at the Maximum Security Prison in Aruka on Saturday.
00:10The altercation left one inmate dead and two others injured.
00:15DCP of Intelligence and Investigations, Suzette Martin, says those found responsible will
00:21be held accountable.
00:23According to statements issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service and the Trinidad
00:27and Tobago Police Service, the incident began during airing time when a confrontation between
00:33rival gang members quickly escalated.
00:36TV6 News understands improvised weapons were used, resulting in the fatal stabbing of one
00:43prisoner and hospitalization of two others.
00:47The prison service responded swiftly to the situation after receiving reports of unrest
00:52inside the facility, assisting officers on duty.
00:57The TTPS also responded lending standby support as the prison officers regained control and
01:04restored order.
01:05The statements say, despite efforts to de-escalate the situation, one male inmate sustained multiple
01:12stab wounds and was pronounced dead shortly after.
01:17His identity is being withheld at this time pending formal identification and notification
01:22of his family.
01:24Acting Commissioner of Prisons, Carlos Carraspe, confirmed that no staff members were injured
01:30during the incident.
01:32He assured the public that the prison has returned to normalcy and additional measures
01:38are being taken to enhance security across all facilities.
01:42Meanwhile, DCP Martin called the incident deeply troubling as the safety and security
01:47of the prison is a matter of national concern, saying they are working closely with the prison
01:53service to prevent any recurrence.
01:56She added that additional police officers are stationed on site and the investigation
02:01is ongoing with the prison remaining on lockdown.
