Grouping in Visualization in Tableau

Last Updated : 19 Jan, 2026

Grouping in Tableau allows users to combine related data values into a single group so they can be analyzed and visualized together. It is especially useful when there are many categories or when similar items need to be treated as one, helping simplify complex visualizations and make insights easier to understand.

  • Combines multiple members into a single group
  • Reduces clutter in charts and dashboards
  • Helps compare related categories
  • Improves clarity of visualisations
  • Supports better and faster data analysis

Implementation

For this we have to follow some steps:

  • Open the Tableau tool and connect a dataset to it.
  • Drag and drop the one sheet of the connected dataset.
  • Click on sheet1 to open the Tableau worksheet.
  • On clicking Sheet1, you will get the whole dataset attributes on the left side and a worksheet for work.
  •  Draw a graph to visualize the data and then apply the grouping technique.

Grouping Ways:

Here, the grouping can be done in two ways:

  • By selecting the labels
  • By creating a group in attribute manually.

The selection of attributes can be done by using Ctrl + select.

Example 1: By selecting labels

Example 2: By creating a group manually
