Slicing Filter in Tableau

Last Updated : 10 Sep, 2025

Slicing Filters in Tableau provide a way to filter data based on dimensions that are not already used in the Rows or Columns of a visualization. These filters, sometimes called calculation filters or slicers, allow us to control the data displayed in a chart without directly affecting the structure of the visualization.

Use of Slicing Filters

  • Allow us to filter data independently of the main chart structure.
  • Provide flexibility to explore data along dimensions that are not directly visualized.
  • Enable more granular analysis in complex dashboards.

Note: Slicing filters behave differently depending on whether we are working with a multi-dimensional data source or a relational data source.

Steps to Apply a Slicing Filter

To apply a slicing filter in Tableau:

  1. Open Tableau and connect to a dataset.
  2. Drag and drop a sheet into the workspace and open a worksheet (e.g., Sheet1).
  3. Build a visualization by placing dimensions and measures into Rows and Columns.
  4. Prepare a slicing filter by selecting a dimension that is not used in the chart

Different Methods to Apply Slicing Filters

There are two methods to apply slicing filters

Method 1: Drag and Drop to Filters Shelf

  1. Draw a chart using desired dimensions and measures.
  2. Drag another dimension (not present in Rows or Columns) to the Filters shelf.
  3. Configure the filter criteria in the pop-up window.
  4. The chart updates based on the slicing filter.

Method 2: Show Filter from Attribute

  1. Draw a chart using the desired dimensions and measures.
  2. Right-click on a dimension (not used in the chart).
  3. Select Show Filter from the context menu.
  4. The filter card appears on the worksheet, allowing interactive slicing.
