Everyone wants to safeguard what they create while also exploring the opportunities of putting their work out there for commercial use. What I always explain is that you do not always own 100% of the app just because you paid someone to build your app. There are specific clauses to put in place and legal exemptions that you cannot surpass. Copyright isn't hard to protect but it can be hard to prove. Last week three separate businesses approached me to advise them because 'their ideas had been stolen' and they wanted to sue them for copyright infringement. You can protect confidential information and trade secrets; you can prevent others using a trade mark like your own; you can stop someone copying your work; and you can prevent a business passing itself off as your or related to yours. But despite these protections, I had to remind the businesses that came to sue these apparent imitators, there is no intellectual property protection for an idea in itself. To borrow from Thomas Jefferson, IP is '10% innovation and 90% perspiration' and the protection for your idea comes when you do the hard work of working out how the idea is put into practice, when you write that down or commit it to some permanent form. The U.S. Copyright Office’s Copyright Claims Board (CCB) Team is being recognized in Category 2: Delivering Excellence in Digital Services for launching the nation’s first fully virtual small claims tribunal. Through eCCB, a user-friendly digital platform, creators, small businesses, and individuals can now resolve copyright disputes quickly and affordably, just $100 vs. hundreds of thousands in federal court. Since 2022, more than 1,200 claims have been filed across 47 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, and internationally, with over 80% of participants representing themselves. By lowering barriers and expanding access, the CCB is empowering creators to protect their work and advancing justice through digital innovation. 🔍 Can you use all literature freely in research? The answer is No. Not all content is open access. Some works are controlled by aggregator agencies (Agritotors) who manage copyright and grant usage permissions. If you bypass them, you risk copyright or trademark violations — and the penalties can be substantial. ⚠️ Many researchers may unknowingly commit such violations. But remember: even unintentional misuse can lead to liability if the copyright agency discovers it. ✅ Best practice: Always verify whether permissions are required, check licensing conditions, and follow proper procedures before using any literature in your work. Responsible research means respecting others’ intellectual property.
