What if I told you these aren't discipline issues or poor attention spans? These are nervous systems in distress. They are brains stuck in survival mode, unable to engage with the very systems we use to teach, connect, and guide.
As a reflex integration consultant working closely with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Cerebral Palsy (CP), and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), I’ve seen this truth unfold countless times:

Let’s start with the nervous system. When a child perceives threat—whether it’s a loud sound, a challenging social interaction, or even an unfamiliar texture—their brain activates the sympathetic nervous system. This is the classic “fight, flight, or freeze” response. It’s a brilliant survival mechanism but a terrible learning environment.

The Role of Reflex Integration
So, where does reflex integration come in?
Primitive reflexes are automatic movements developed in utero and infancy that are foundational to survival and development. They include the Moro, Rooting, Palmar, ATNR, STNR, TLR, and others.
When these reflexes remain active beyond the expected age, they interfere with higher-level brain functions, such as:

This is where reflex integration work is radically different from traditional educational or therapeutic models. We don’t begin with worksheets, flashcards, or speech drills. We begin with the body. We begin with regulation.
