After years of world-leading innovation getting stuck in procurement purgatory, NICE, NHSE, DHSC and the MHRA have built a joint pathway to get proven tech to patients, consistently, nationally. First up: capsule sponge tests for oesophageal cancer detection and AI tools for breast and prostate cancer pathology. This is not a pilot. £20 million for health tech that could save 15,000 lives a year. The UK government just opened one of the most significant health tech funding rounds I've seen in a while. Through Innovate UK, grants of up to £10 million are available for late-stage technologies tackling drug and alcohol addiction. Wearable devices, AI-enabled tools, VR therapies, treatment apps. Earlier-stage innovations can apply for up to £1.5 million. Here's what makes this different from most health tech funding: → It demands real-world effectiveness, not just promising research → It includes MHRA and NICE support to accelerate regulatory pathways → It's explicitly designed to move tech from lab to frontline care services That last point matters most. Having scaled a digital pharmacy to become the UK's largest, I've seen first-hand how the gap between innovation and deployment is where most health tech dies. Brilliant solutions sitting in pilot programmes. Proven tools gathering dust because nobody mapped the regulatory route. Teams with world-class tech but no plan for clinical adoption. This fund addresses those exact failure points. Substance misuse costs England an estimated £47 billion annually. Around 15,000 people die every year. The technology to help already exists. I’ve always believed that innovation in healthcare only matters if it truly benefits patients or healthcare professionals. That’s why I find the combination of AI and traditional biomarkers so exciting. Take chronic kidney disease as an example. A single blood value like creatinine can indicate how well the kidneys are working. But on its own, it often only shows decline once significant damage has occurred. When AI analyzes an individual patient’s data — creatinine together with other lab results and demographic factors — and compares these with patterns learned from thousands of other patients, it can reveal signals that remain invisible to the human eye. This makes it possible to predict which patients are at higher risk of kidney function decline. Clinicians can then act earlier, tailor treatment, and help prevent complications before they occur. For patients, this means fewer hospitalizations and a better quality of life. For healthcare systems, it means resources are used where they matter most. This shift from reacting late to anticipating early is no longer just a promise — it’s already changing care today. AI is not a vision of the future anymore. It’s already happening.
