    Imagine finding out you have cancer more than three years before any symptoms appear. Thanks to researchers at Johns Hopkins, that idea is no longer just wishful thinking. They’ve developed a cutting-edge blood test that can detect tiny traces of cancer DNA long before today’s standard screenings would ever pick it up. In their study, they ran this multicancer early detection (MCED) test on blood samples from people enrolled in a heart health study. Half of these folks later developed cancer within six months. Remarkably, the test found cancer signals in eight of these future patients—months before their diagnoses. But here’s where it gets even more incredible: for six of these patients, older blood samples were still on file. When researchers checked, four of them already had detectable cancer DNA in their blood more than three years before they ever knew they were sick. Catching cancer that early could be a total game-changer, letting doctors treat it while tumors are still small and more easily curable. As one researcher put it, finding cancer three years sooner could mean it’s “much less advanced and more likely to be curable.” The technology still needs more work before it’s widely available, and there are questions about what to do after a positive test. But experts say tests like this could one day work alongside mammograms or colonoscopies, giving people a much better shot at survival.     Emerging research indicates that what looks like “just getting older” cognitive decline may actually be linked to treatable health issues. Conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, poor vision or hearing, persistent inflammation and even chronic infection are increasingly recognised as triggers that damage the brain over time. By harming blood vessels, disrupting metabolism or reducing brain stimulation, these issues can set the stage for dementia long before memory problems are obvious. For example, untreated high blood pressure and diabetes can reduce blood flow or cause vessel damage in the brain, while vision or hearing loss may lead to social isolation and less mental input—both pathways to cognitive decline. Detecting and managing these health conditions early gives a real chance to slow down or delay the onset of dementia. In other words, maintaining overall health is more than just feeling better now—it may protect your brain decades later. The key takeaway is that brain health isn’t only about genetics or age.     As an oncologist, I’ve had more conversations than I can count with patients hearing the words “late-stage cancer” for the first time. I’ve sat with them in that moment of shock, walked with them through the fear, the hope and the fight. And there is one truth I’ve learned: when we catch cancer early, we change everything. We save lives. We spare families years of unnecessary heartache. We prevent the crushing financial, physical, and emotional burdens that come when the disease is found too late. That’s why at St. Elizabeth Healthcare we’ve made early detection a cornerstone of our mission. We’ve invested heavily in screening and prevention, particularly in lung cancer, where Kentucky leads the nation in incidence rates. Lung cancer remains the deadliest cancer in the U.S., but when caught early, survival rates soar. In coming years, it is likely that more sensitive blood-based cancer multicancer early detection screening tests will replace screening scans—and once FDA approved, should be widely available. The promise here is enormous: MCED tests could save countless lives, reduce the need for aggressive and expensive treatments, and give patients hope when it matters most. But science can only save lives if public policy keeps up. The Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) Screening Coverage Act is designed to do exactly that. It would allow Medicare to cover FDA-approved tests without years of bureaucratic delay—just as it did for other lifesaving cancer screenings.
