    🧠 When the System Changes, So Must You Not all change is incremental. Sometimes the rules of the game get rewritten — and entire industries get left behind. Think Kodak in photography. Blockbuster in media. Each missed the moment when the system flipped, and value shifted. We’re on the brink of another: the climate transition. And it’s global. 🌀 This isn’t a product shift. It’s a system shift. Power, transport, food, buildings, finance — they’re all being rewired. Not slowly. Systemically. And when systems shift, leaders need more than strategies. They need systems thinking: 🔁 Feedback loops: Solar, wind, EVs all get cheaper as they scale. Adoption feeds adoption. ⚠️ Tipping points: Change is slow… until it’s sudden. EVs crossed 5% in major markets — now growth is exponential. 🔒 Lock-in: Legacy mindsets, infrastructure, and incentives keep companies stuck. 🧊 Phase changes: You can’t optimise a caterpillar into a butterfly. 🧭 So what do business leaders need to do? 1️⃣ See the whole system — not just your segment. 2️⃣ Disrupt yourself before someone else does. 3️⃣ Align incentives with long-term transformation. 4️⃣ Shift the culture — reward learning, not perfection. 5️⃣ Lead beyond your walls — shape policy, infrastructure, ecosystems. 6️⃣ Tell the story — give your teams a reason to let go of the old. 🌍 The climate transition will redistribute value at scale. Clean energy is already the cheapest source of power for most of the world. EVs are on track to dominate new sales by 2030. Rather than focusing only on immediate tasks, we consider every step in the lifecycle, connecting dots between people, resources, and processes. Studies show that sustainability initiatives grounded in systems thinking yield more resilient outcomes. I n fact, a 2023 McKinsey study found that organizations with an integrated approach to sustainability had a 20% greater rate of project success than those using isolated, short-term fixes.     One of our clients—an international energy company—was undergoing a massive transformation, shifting from oil to e-mobility and sustainable fuels. The board’s mandate was clear: build a workforce ready for tomorrow’s challenges. During my first week, I visited a remote field site. Standing beside a team of engineers, I could sense their anxiety about unfamiliar technologies, stricter compliance audits, and the relentless pressure to deliver results. The old training modules? They barely scratched the surface of what these teams truly needed. We soon realized that off-the-shelf courses just weren’t enough. Understanding how people actually felt about new work processes was essential. I spent hours with field and office teams—listening, mapping out real pain points, and asking sometimes uncomfortable questions. How can we help our people make critical decisions on the ground? How do we build capability at scale, rather than just ticking compliance boxes? Once we gained that clarity, everything began to shift. Our team created an interactive learning journey—complete with role-based simulations, gamified crisis scenarios, and data-driven feedback loops. Each module put learners in the driver’s seat, dealing with real-life emergencies or optimizing EV infrastructure in realistic ways. It wasn’t all smooth sailing. Our first pilot exposed significant gaps—some learners felt overwhelmed, while others needed more hands-on support.We responded quickly by launching peer forums, field workshops, and targeted communications to bridge those divides. Within just 90 days, employees became noticeably more confident. Sites reported improved safety, efficiency, and even reduced downtime. This experience reinforced for me how real listening, strategic design, and a willingness to adapt can transform not just results, but the culture itself.     Sustainability teams are shrinking. Government funding is disappearing. Regulations are stalling. If you’re still selling sustainability the old way, you’re already behind. This isn’t just about business strategy - it’s about figuring out how to move forward when so much is at risk. For many of us, this work is personal. And while policy shifts are out of our control, how we adapt and keep pushing forward isn’t. Companies still need to manage risk, improve efficiency, and meet customer and investor expectations. The responsibilities haven’t disappeared - they’ve just shifted. ➡️ Instead of sustainability teams driving decisions, the focus has moved to operations, finance, and manufacturing leadership. ➡️ Instead of compliance or ESG goals being the reason to act, the justification is now cost savings, efficiency, and risk mitigation. ➡️ Instead of selling into a sustainability department, companies need to make the case to CFOs, COOs, and heads of manufacturing. This shift is happening fast. Over the last few weeks: ⚠️ Government funding for sustainability initiatives has been frozen or cut back. ⚠️ Regulatory momentum has slowed, reducing external pressure to act. ⚠️ Inflation Reduction Act incentives are at risk, disrupting investment in sustainable technologies. For greentech companies, this means one thing: 👉 If your sales strategy still depends on sustainability teams and ESG goals, it’s time to pivot. How to Stay Ahead: ✔ Reposition your pitch: don’t lead with “sustainability.” Instead, start with how your solution solves a specific business problem for your customer - whether that’s reducing costs, improving efficiency, or mitigating operational risks. ✔ Speak to new decision-makers: finance, operations, and manufacturing leaders care about measurable business impact. Show them how your solution improves margins, reduces downtime, or increases productivity. ✔ Map your customer’s real business problem: before pitching, pinpoint the operational challenge your prospect is facing. Is it rising energy costs? Supply chain inefficiencies? Labor shortages? Position your solution as the answer. ✔ Arm yourself with proof points: bring real numbers. Cost savings, efficiency gains, risk reduction - whatever matters most to the decision-maker. ROI calculations and case studies will get the attention of finance and operations leaders. Sustainability isn’t disappearing - it’s just moving to a new seat at the table. The work continues, even when the path forward feels uncertain.

    The research article “Navigating Sustainability Transitions: A Science for Policy Approach”, published in Sustainable Production and Consumption, harks back to the origins of my intellectual development at the Institute of Social Ecology in Vienna (environmental sociology, industrial ecology, and ecological economics) and reflects on these foundations through two decades of research in Australia at CSIRO. Three takeaways I’m carrying forward: Transitions are systemic, not just technical. Efficiency gains and clean tech matter, but they rarely deliver sustainability on their own. Progress depends on reshaping systems of provision, institutions, incentives, and the redefinition of “prosperity” within planetary boundaries. Science-for-policy works best as co-production. Not a linear pipeline, but an iterative cycle: shared visioning, scenario-based assessment and deliberation, mobilising investment and capabilities, and continuous monitoring so policy can adapt under uncertainty. Traction comes from linking big goals to actionable shifts. Key leverage points sit in industry, cities, energy, land, and culture, but durable change requires legitimacy: aligning what politics needs (credible institutions and metrics), what business needs (viable models and signals), and what communities need (fairness, meaning, and agency).

    Day 23 of the conflict. Oil prices are up more than 40% since the war began.   At moments like this, it feels like the scale of the problem is bigger than the tools we have. But this is exactly when sustainability thinking matters most; not as an aspiration, but as a practical framework for building resilience.   The pathway forward looks different depending on where you are.   For 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗲𝘀, the priority is accelerating what is already in motion: faster permitting for renewables, grid modernisation, energy efficiency at scale, and strategic storage investment. The tools exist. The crisis has made the case for using them clearer than ever.   For 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗲𝘀, the transition requires targeted concessional funding, technology transfer, and South-South cooperation on solar and distributed energy. Getting this right means ensuring the transition is equitable, not just fast.   Across both contexts, a few principles from sustainability thinking apply:   🔹 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 reduces fragility. Every economy that has invested in a broader energy mix, whether through renewables, nuclear, efficiency, or storage, is more resilient to what is happening right now. This is not theoretical. It is visible in real time.   🔹 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 pays dividends that short-term crisis management cannot. The countries and companies that made transition investments years ago are in a structurally different position today than those that deferred them.   🔹 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 requires systemic responses. The current crisis is a reminder that 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘧𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 are not separate issues. Sustainability frameworks that integrate these dependencies, rather than treating them in silos, are better equipped to identify vulnerabilities before they become crises.   The disruption we are living through is painful and the immediate human cost is real.
