Cross-border remittances are a crucial lifeline for millions globally, but today these payments face challenges like high costs, delays, and limited access. The Digital Dollar Project, Western Union, and BDO Unibank collaborated on a pilot study simulating a CBDC-based remittance from the U.S. to the Philippines. The results show how a digital dollar could mitigate pain points in cross-border payments. Here are my key takeaways from the pilot study: 🔶 A tokenised CBDC enables instant P2P settlement, reducing risk and the need for pre-funded accounts. 🔶 Atomic transactions settle multiple currency exchanges simultaneously, optimising capital costs. 🔶 Accessibility improves with direct access to central bank money and digital wallet onboarding. 🔶 Enhanced visibility into transaction status via the shared ledger increases trust. 🔶 The pilot achieved settlement in under 10 seconds, a major efficiency gain. 🔶 Interoperability remains a key question in implementing retail CBDCs across borders. 🔶 Identity verification and transaction privacy need further examination in a CBDC context. 🔶 This pilot established foundational elements for future cross-border CBDC experimentation. Cost, Speed, Coverage: The Cross-Border Payments Trade-Off 💡 All Cross-Border Payment systems must solve the core problem that a sender and recipient, as well as their respective banks, may not be directly connected. The solutions to this problem create trade-offs in speed, cost, and coverage of supported countries/currencies 🌍 Correspondent banking and money transmitters were pioneered in the pre-digital era, so their models use networks of intermediaries in different ways to solve the same problem. They generally optimize for coverage at the expense of speed/cost. Payment aggregators and stablecoins use technology (e.g., better onboarding and servicing via mobile apps, faster/cheaper pay in/out via emerging RTP rails) to reduce or eliminate intermediaries. Interestingly, some new players offer embedded models, either as a pure play (e.g., Airwallex, Nium, Bridge) or as a complement to their existing direct business (e.g., Wise Platform) 👨💻 Beyond the mechanics of how money moves across borders, it’s important to understand how factors like sender/recipient and country/currency mix determine the strategy and economics of Cross-Border Payment companies. The sender/recipient mix (C2C, B2C, C2B, B2B) determines distribution strategy, regulatory and compliance burden, product adjacencies, etc. Because businesses generally send and receive more payments more frequently than consumers, they have more pricing leverage and see lower take rates than mixes involving consumers. For example, Remitly (C2C) has a gross take rate of >200 bps versus Corpay (B2B)’s <60 bps 💰 The corridor is another important determinant of take rate. Generally corridors with larger volumes, more stable currencies, more balanced flows, modern banking infrastructures, and complementary regulatory regimes are more competitive and therefore have lower take rates. Inversely, there’s typically less competition and higher take rates with more volatile currencies, unbalanced and low/inconsistent flows, and antiquated financial infra. The take rate is up to 25x greater for the least competitive corridors. Many Cross-Border Payment companies follow the general fintech trend of complementing low-margin transactional revenue with other complementary financial products and/or higher-margin software products. For example, Wise offers interest-bearing deposit accounts while Flywire offers vertical software for its key industries, like education and healthcare. Embedding for distribution is another popular strategy, with companies that were initially direct-to-consumer offering products like Wise’s Platform and Airwallex’s embedded solution. Many businesses underestimate the costs, fraud risks, and approval rate challenges that come with cross-border transactions. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲? 🔹𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝘀 → Cross-border transactions often trigger "cross-border assessment fees" from Visa, Mastercard, and issuers. Why? ▪️𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 → Issuers may flag transactions from foreign countries as unusual spending behavior, leading to declines. ▪️𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 → Many fraud detection systems work best within a country’s financial ecosystem. A transaction from a US-based merchant hitting a European bank lacks local data points, leading to conservative decline decisions. ▪️𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀 → Cross-border transactions typically have higher chargeback rates, making banks and payment processors wary of approvals. This approach applies across banking, payments, and financial services. The growing stablecoin market (projected to reach $1.1 trillion by 2035) provides the foundation for this transformation. The most valuable implementations transform financial operations while maintaining transparency for business leaders.

Cross-border wires are still broken. You don’t need a report to tell you that - you’ve probably lived it. Maybe you’ve had to explain to a client why their funds are “still in transit.” Maybe you’ve fielded calls from a small business owner who’s waiting on an invoice just to make payroll. Or maybe it’s a parent, panicked because tuition hasn’t landed overseas yet. These aren’t rare exceptions. They’re daily realities. Fifteen percent of wires still require manual intervention. Funds can take days, sometimes weeks, to track down. And when a $50,000 transfer disappears into the system, customers don’t distinguish between global networks and your institution. To them, their money is missing. Their trust is gone. And that’s your problem to solve.
