Hospitality brands are addicted to vanity metrics. Likes, follower counts, and viral moments look good in a boardroom slide deck, but they don’t move revenue, don’t build loyalty, and don’t feed the soul of your brand. They feed the ego. And when your marketing is built on ego, you’ll always be chasing the next shiny thing instead of creating a foundation that lasts. Social media is psychological. People don’t follow hotels or cruise lines because of how many followers they already have. They follow because of the value, the story, the feeling you give them. They engage because you trigger emotion, memory, or aspiration. They buy because you’ve built trust and culture around your content. The brands that get this are already winning, the ones who don’t are still sitting in weekly meetings debating fonts and hashtags. Here’s the truth: social media marketing in hospitality is not about perfection. It’s about connection. Stop worrying about the one negative comment and start worrying about the fact that your content has no personality. Stop running ads with generic stock footage and start putting your employees, your chef, your GM, your community in the spotlight. Starve your ego, feed your soul. Ego says “let’s protect the brand at all costs.” Soul says “let’s be human, let’s be real, let’s show the world who we are.” Practical advice: 1. Flip your priorities. Instead of obsessing over follower count, measure how many DMs you’re getting, how many people are sharing your posts, how many save your content because it’s useful. That’s impact. 2. Create content for humans, not executives. Show up raw, behind the scenes, unpolished if necessary, because that’s how trust is built. The polish is already assumed in your property. Your content should give people access to what they can’t find on Google. 3. Build a strategy that mirrors a startup, not a bureaucracy. Speed matters. Relevance matters. You don’t need ten people to approve a reel. You need one person who understands the brand’s voice and has the freedom to hit publish. 4. Teach your staff to be storytellers. Your front desk agent has more influence on your brand perception than your marketing director. Empower them, train them, and include them in your digital presence. 5. Stop copying your competitors. By the time you notice what they posted, the psychology of attention has already shifted. If you’re not setting the tone, you’re following someone else’s playbook. Feeding your soul as a brand means leaning into purpose. Why do you exist beyond selling rooms or cabins? What do you believe about hospitality, community, culture? That is what will separate you in a noisy feed. Consumers are smarter than ever, and they see right through ego-driven marketing. Hospitality is about creating memories that live forever. Your social media should do the same. Ego builds numbers. Soul builds empires. --- If you like the way I look at the world of hospitality, let's chat: scott@mrscotteddy.com

The Secret of Luxury Hospitality Positioning 1/ Most hospitality brands think they're selling rooms. Hermès thinks they're selling dreams. Aman thinks they're selling transformation. The Ritz thinks they're selling legacy. Here's why 99% of hospitality brands will never understand true luxury positioning: 2/ The $600B hospitality industry has it backwards. They obsess over thread counts and marble bathrooms. But when a billionaire pays $2,000/night at Aman Tokyo, they're not buying a bed. They're buying 3 hours where the world can't find them. They're purchasing RELIEF. 3/ Hermès mastered this 187 years ago: Birkin bag cost breakdown: • Leather: $200 • Labor: $800 • The rest: POSITIONING You're not buying a bag. You're buying entry into a club your great-grandmother respected. Generational wealth buys IDENTITY, not amenities. 4/ The brands that "get it" understand 3 pillars: SCARCITY: Aman has 34 properties. They could have 340. They choose not to. LEGACY: Le Bristol Paris sells Hemingway's view, not just suites. IMMUNITY: While others chase trends, Aman perfects timeless sanctuary. 5/ What 90% of hospitality brands do wrong: ❌ Compete on features ❌ Chase Instagram moments ❌ Discount for occupancy ❌ Target "luxury travelers" What top-tier brands do: ✅ Create their own category ✅ Build generational rituals ✅ Never compromise positioning ✅ Target legacy builders 6/ Case study in positioning power: Four Seasons: "Exceptional service" St. Regis: "Bespoke luxury" Aman: "Sanctuary" One commands 3x the rate. Strategy isn't about better amenities. Strategy is about DIFFERENT MEANING. 7/ The psychology is profound: When stress costs $1M deals → peace becomes priceless When reputation spans generations → discretion becomes invaluable When time is finite → transformation becomes essential You're not selling hospitality. You're selling a story they'll tell their grandchildren. 8/ Luxury isn't a price point. Luxury is a CULTURE. The culture of anticipated needs, generational consistency, and effortless perfection. Culture can't be copied. Only cultivated. Ready to transform your hospitality brand from commodity to legacy? I help hotel brands discover their unique positioning and build generational meaning that commands premium rates. DM "POSITIONING" to explore how we can elevate your brand's story. Smart luxury hotels are playing a short & long term game with their new marketing strategies. While most travel brands obsess over immediate ROI, luxury properties like Rosewood Mayakoba are hosting content-worthy, elaborate dinner experiences that cost thousands to produce but generate minimal short-term revenue. This defies every digital marketing principle we've been taught, but it’s great. Here's what's brilliant about this strategy: These hotels are building emotional equity with guests who spend thousands per stay and return year after year, whilst banking world-class experiential content that fuels future performance marketing. A guest who spends $2,000 per night and returns annually for a decade represents $20,000+ in revenue. That's worth investing in for the long term. Skift recently covered how this strategy is from an age old playbook that completely flips the traditional travel marketing playbook. Instead of broad reach, they're going deep with their highest-value customers. The brands playing the long game… investing in memorable, relationship-building experiences rather than conversion optimization will own the luxury traveler's loyalty AND attract new customers with great, content-driven marketing.

Hotels don’t create demand. Destinations do. If your marketing starts with room size, mattress brand, or buffet variety… you’re competing on commodities. Guests don’t travel for thread count. They travel for meaning. They don’t wake up dreaming of a “deluxe category.” They dream of a sunrise over a historic skyline. A street that smells of jasmine and coffee. A moment that becomes a story. A hotel is the stage. The destination is the hero. Think about it. When someone says Paris, you see romance and the Eiffel Tower glowing at night. When someone says Kyoto, you imagine shrines and cherry blossoms. When someone says Dubai, you picture ambition rising beside the Burj Khalifa. The city creates desire. The hotel fulfills it. Yet in many emerging markets, we reverse the equation. We build beautiful hotels… Then ask why occupancy is soft. Because guests don’t travel to hotels. They travel through them. If I’m marketing Chennai, I’m not leading with a lobby render. I’m leading with: • Marina Beach at dawn • Temple trails and spiritual circuits • December music season • The revival of Pallikaranai marshland • A city that moved from colonial Madras to global tech hub The hotel becomes the gateway, not the headline. Here’s the strategic truth: Destination branding drives: ✔ Higher ADR ✔ Longer stays ✔ Stronger emotional loyalty ✔ Repeat visitation When guests fall in love with a place, they return. When they fall in love only with a property, they compare. The future of hospitality is not inventory. It is narrative. Tourism boards, hoteliers, airlines, artists, chefs, storytellers — we must co-create ecosystems, not isolated buildings. Because in the end, no one remembers the pillow menu. They remember how the destination made them feel. So here’s the leadership question: Are you selling rooms? Or are you selling a reason to travel? #HospitalityLeadership #DestinationStrategy #ExperienceEconomy #TourismGrowth

There’s a massive blindspot in hospitality. It's creating the biggest missed opportunity in decades for properties. Here’s how we discovered the industry-wide oversight that is organic social revenue attribution: At Onera, our analytics initially showed social media driving less than 1-2% of bookings. Based on that alone we should have immediately redirected our resources—supposedly Instagram was responsible for just a tiny fraction of our revenue. But something didn't add up… Millions of views. Constant engagement. 5-10k clicks into our booking funnel each month. Yet according to our Google Analytics dashboard, almost none of these followers were actually booking. So we did something radical in today's data tracking-obsessed world: We simply asked our guests how they found us. Yep, a simple survey. The shocking truth? Over 60% discovered us through Instagram. This wasn't a small discrepancy—it was massive. This disconnect plagues the entire hospitality industry. The tracking mechanisms we rely on—from UTM parameters to Google Analytics—simply aren't designed to capture the complex, non-linear journey of today's social-first traveler. Think about your own behavior: - Discover a property on Instagram - Follow them for months - Google search for their website when ready to book - Get counted as "direct traffic" in analytics The social influence that initiated the entire journey? Completely invisible. This blindspot explains why most hotels underinvest in social: - Executives demand clear ROI before investing - They need to see direct lines between spending and revenue - They love Meta & Google ads because attribution is clean and immediate But savvy operators understand a fundamental truth: Just because something isn't perfectly trackable doesn't mean it isn't immensely valuable. These properties are building audiences of tens of thousands—sometimes hundreds of thousands—of potential guests who follow their content daily. They're creating emotional connections that override price sensitivity and competitive shopping. Most importantly, they're capturing direct bookings at a fraction of the cost of traditional acquisition channels. The forward-thinking few recognize that we're in a media revolution fundamentally reshaping how guests discover properties. While everyone else waits for perfect attribution, they're building direct relationships with future guests months or years before they ever book. This isn't just a measurement challenge—it's perhaps the greatest opportunity in modern hospitality. And it's hiding in plain sight.

🌍 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐬 𝐍𝐨 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐬. 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 The global tourism industry has entered a new era — and visibility alone is no longer enough. In a market saturated with beautiful destinations and competitive prices, what truly differentiates brands is not what they offer… but how they make people feel before the journey even begins. 💬 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐐𝐮𝐨𝐭𝐞 “In tourism, perception creates desire — and desire drives decisions.” This is where strategic marketing becomes a leadership tool. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 Traditional approach: 📍 Promote location 📍 Emphasize price 📍 Push availability Modern strategic approach: ✅ Build emotional narratives ✅ Communicate purpose and identity ✅ Create trust before conversion ✅ Design digital experiences that inspire action The most successful tourism brands today don’t advertise. They educate, connect, and elevate perception. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧-𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 If your marketing only shows landscapes, you are missing the true opportunity. Powerful tourism branding focuses on: Emotional storytelling, not just promotion Cultural authenticity, not generic messaging Experience design, not simple service delivery Long-term loyalty, not short-term bookings Tourism marketing is now a discipline of psychology, experience and emotional intelligence. 𝐀 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 Is your brand communicating: 🔹 What you sell or 🔹 Why people should care? Because when people care, they return. When they return, they advocate. When they advocate, your brand becomes legacy. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐍𝐨𝐰 ✔ Shift your content from selling to storytelling ✔ Align visuals with emotional positioning ✔ Communicate purpose consistently ✔ Build digital presence as a trust ecosystem ✔ Speak to the heart before the wallet Tourism marketing that inspires doesn’t compete. It attracts. Brands that understand this don’t chase trends — they set the narrative for the future of global travel. If you’re ready to elevate your destination or hospitality brand from visibility to strategic authority, this is where the transformation begins. Let’s redefine how the world experiences travel. #tourismmarketing #destinationbranding #hospitalitystrategy #emotionalbranding #luxurytourism #digitalpresence #brandpositioning #experienceeconomy #travelwithpurpose #travelindustry
