Stop trying to reinvent your personal brand and start trying to refresh it. Most professionals think they need to become someone completely different to advance their careers. But that's not the issue. The real problem isn't that you haven't grown. It's that everyone around you is still operating on an outdated mental map of who you were 5-10 years ago. Psychology calls this "cognitive miserhood" - when people are overwhelmed, they rely on mental shortcuts and stick with their first impressions. If something changes dramatically, they notice. If the change is gradual, they default to what they already think they know about you. Here's the scenario: You've been at your company for years. You've developed strategic thinking skills, earned certifications, maybe completed an MBA. You've evolved from the person who used to just execute tasks to someone who can shape direction. But your colleagues, clients, and leaders still see you as the person from your first performance review. This becomes a major problem when opportunities arise. Job openings, major projects, promotions - the decision makers aren't considering the professional you've become. They're working from a five-year-old snapshot. The solution isn't dramatic reinvention, it's a strategic refresh. Here's the three-step framework: ✅ Define your target perception ↳ How do you want to be seen today? "Strategic leader," "innovative problem-solver," "trusted advisor" ✅ Audit the gap ↳ What's the difference between that vision and how people currently perceive you? ✅ Design your refresh strategy ↳ Reverse-engineer specific actions to close that perception gap Three areas to focus your efforts: Content creation Share your thinking publicly. Volunteer for speaking opportunities. Write thoughtful articles. Lead lunch-and-learns. Show people you're operating at a higher level. Social proof Build borrowed credibility from recognized sources. Present at industry events. Get quoted in publications. Partner with respected brands or organizations. Strategic network Connect with people who can help refine your ideas and amplify your work to the right audiences. Even small moves create significant shifts. Update your LinkedIn profile to reflect who you are today. Practice a compelling answer to "What have you been working on lately?" Volunteer to present the next strategic initiative. In our rapidly changing business environment, we can't afford to let our personal brands lag behind our actual capabilities. Your next opportunity depends on people seeing the professional you've already become. 🛟 Save this post and send it to a friend who needs to refresh their personal brand. ➡️ Follow Dorie Clark for more insights on building your personal brand and becoming a recognized expert in your field.

On my clients’ minds: “How do I rebrand myself as someone who is capable of a higher level leadership and influence?” Changing how people view you isn't an overnight process although we wish it could be. Changing your brand in the workplace takes concerted time, effort and stamina to continually show up in new ways and teaching people to expect new things from you. Here are three strategies you can try to shift others' perception of you from a doer, expert or high achiever to a more influential and strategic leader: 1️⃣ Stop Over-Relying on Expertise and Start Leading Through Influence ▫️Start delegating tactical work and investing time in setting direction, shaping strategy, and influencing others. ▫️Redirect your colleagues to seek out your direct reports for answers instead of always coming to you. 2️⃣ Position Yourself as Valuable AND Visible ▫️Stop assuming results speak for themselves. ▫️Proactively align and advocate your work results to company goals and talk about impact in strategic terms. This positions you as a leader who is visible and valuable. ▫️Say things like, “This initiative helps us reduce risk in X,” or “This supports the CEO's Q3 priority on customer retention.” 3️⃣ Be Seen as Future-Focused, Not Just Reliable ▫️Many professionals unintentionally brand themselves as “reliable and steady," but not as “innovative, visionary, or future-ready.” ▫️As organizations endure immense pressure to grow, adapt or change due to economic or competitive pressures, how are you helping them identify and navigate these challenges? ▫️Shift your language from past-tense accomplishments to future-focused initiatives. Instead of “I've always done X,” say “I'm currently focused on growing our capability in Y,” or “I'm exploring ways to help our team do Z more efficiently.” What tip will you try? Or, what tips can you share to help someone successfully rebrand from a humble high achiever to influential leader?

Have you ever felt like you're stuck on the mid-career plateau? Those promotions you've been eyeing seem just out of reach, and opportunities keep passing you by. It's a frustrating place to be, but let me assure you, you're not alone. Many mid-career professionals are navigating the sometimes treacherous waters of corporate life. But here's the good news: there's a way to get out of it through personal branding. Picture yourself as the CEO of "You Inc." In today's interconnected world, your professional reputation precedes you. A robust personal brand paints you as a thought leader, a go-to expert, and an invaluable asset in your industry. It's what gets you noticed by recruiters, future employers, and potential clients alike. But how do you craft a personal brand that truly sets you apart from the crowd? Here are two actionable steps to get you started: 1️⃣ Unearth Your "Why" and "What": Your brand story begins with a deep dive into your unique strengths and experiences. What challenges do you tackle head-on? What solutions do you offer? Identifying your value proposition is like unleashing a superpower – it's what makes you indispensable in your field. 2️⃣ Embrace Your Online Presence: LinkedIn isn't just a platform; it's your digital storefront. Craft a profile that exudes expertise and impact, sprinkled with keywords relevant to your industry. Share success stories that pack a punch with quantifiable results, and dive into meaningful conversations within industry circles. And don't stop at LinkedIn – consider contributing to industry publications or starting your own niche blog to further solidify your authority. Remember, personal branding is a journey, not a destination. Consistency is key – stay engaged, create valuable content, and network strategically to build a robust online presence that opens doors to new opportunities. Personal Branding Isn’t Just for Entrepreneurs—It’s Your Career Superpower ⚡ Think personal branding is only for influencers or CEOs? Think again. Your personal brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room—and it’s the key to unlocking bigger opportunities in your career. Here’s how you can use personal branding to supercharge your professional life: 1. Stand for Something: You can’t build a memorable brand by being vanilla. Pick your values, strengths, or unique insights, and make them central to your story. Whether you’re known for your innovation, leadership, or being the go-to problem solver, make sure people know what you stand for. 2. Turn Your Work Into a Conversation: Don’t just do the work—talk about it. Share the behind-the-scenes, the wins, the challenges, and the lessons learned. The goal is to turn your work into a conversation that positions you as a thought leader in your field. 3. Let Your Personality Shine: No one connects with a robot. Your personal brand should reflect who you are. If you’re witty, show it. If you’re passionate about a cause, don’t hide it. People connect with people, not titles. 4. Create a Digital Footprint: Your personal brand doesn’t live just on LinkedIn. Make sure your footprint spans across your social platforms, portfolio, or blog. The more touchpoints people have with your brand, the more memorable you become. 5. Don’t Just Network—Nurture Relationships: Building a personal brand is not about collecting followers. It’s about building meaningful relationships. Engage with others, offer help, and be genuinely interested in what others are doing. It’s this network that becomes your brand ambassadors. Remember, you don’t need a “CEO” title to have a powerful personal brand. All you need is a clear message, an authentic voice, and the willingness to share your story. Your career—and your opportunities—will thank you for it. #PersonalBrandingTips #LinkedInTips #CareerAdvice LinkedIn

The Top 3 Unique Ways to Elevate Your Personal Brand! In the modern professional landscape, your personal brand is your story, your reputation, and your unique edge. As an executive recruiter, I've seen how innovative approaches to personal branding can make a significant impact. Here are three unique ways to elevate your personal brand: ✒️ 1. Develop a Signature Approach: Cultivate a distinctive professional style that reflects your identity and expertise. Whether it’s a unique method for problem-solving, a memorable tagline, or a particular communication style, your approach should be authentic and recognizable, leaving a lasting impression in every interaction. 📝 2. Create Content that Connects: Move beyond traditional resumes and LinkedIn profiles by creating content that showcases your expertise and personality. Consider starting a blog, podcast, or YouTube channel where you discuss industry trends, share insights, and engage with your audience. This creative outlet can position you as a thought leader and an innovator. 🎞️ 3. Build an Experience Portfolio: Instead of just listing roles and achievements, build an experience portfolio that narrates your journey through stories, projects, and testimonials. Incorporate visuals, anecdotes, and multimedia elements to create a dynamic narrative that truly reflects your contributions and growth.

If you are a General Counsel or Managing Partner, you are leading in one of the most complex, pressurized environments there is. You are balancing growth, profitability, client expectations, and the changing needs of your teams, while carrying a weight that is often invisible to those around you. What I know after decades of working with senior women in law: your brand is not a “nice to have.” It is a business driver. It strengthens client loyalty, inspires talent to stay and grow, and sets you apart in an increasingly competitive and technology-driven profession. 1. Visibility Beyond Your Title Your title carries weight. But titles do not guarantee influence. Visibility does. When your presence and perspective are known beyond your immediate circle, you are positioned for opportunities that expand your impact, whether that is board service, attracting marquee clients, or shaping the future of the profession. 2. Credibility Grounded in Foresight Clients are no longer satisfied with excellent legal advice alone. They want judgment, creativity, and leadership that anticipates what is ahead. A 2024 Thomson Reuters study found that two-thirds of corporate clients expect lawyers to proactively identify not only risks, but innovation opportunities. Your brand must communicate that you are a trusted strategist who sees around corners. 3. Relational Capital That Lasts Every leader I know has gotten where they are because of their innate Zone of Genius, talent, determination, and intellect. But staying at the top requires something different: relational capital. The ability to cultivate trust, build sponsorship, and create networks of influence that outlast a single role or client. I recently worked with a Managing Partner at a mid-sized firm who was highly respected for her litigation skills, but her voice was not being valued at the leadership table, and her clients did not see her as a strategist beyond the matters she handled. By deliberately expanding her external visibility, reframing her credibility as a forward-thinking business advisor, and investing in deepening peer and client relationships, she shifted the trajectory of her practice and her firm. Within 18 months, she secured a Fortune 100 client, was invited to serve on the firm’s management committee, and became a sought-after mentor for rising women associates. Mastering and amplifying your brand is not about self-promotion. It is about alignment and ensuring that how others experience you matches the value, vision, and leadership you bring every day. Done with intention, your brand becomes an engine of growth, innovation, and legacy. If you were to ask your clients, colleagues, and team members to describe what your professional brand stands for, would their answers match the vision you hold for yourself? #BigLaw #WomenInLaw #LeadershipDevelopment #ManagingPartners #GeneralCounsel #LegalIndustry #ExecutiveLeadership

Seasoned professionals often struggle with personal branding because traditional advice focuses on building visibility rather than leveraging existing authority and expertise. The most effective branding strategies for experienced professionals emphasize thought leadership and industry wisdom rather than personal promotion or trend-following. Key platforms and approaches that work: Professional publishing through platforms like Medium allows you to share insights and frameworks developed through decades of experience. Speaking opportunities and podcast appearances position you as an industry authority and provide content that can be repurposed across multiple channels. Board-ready profile development opens doors to governance opportunities while demonstrating executive-level thinking. Alumni network activation leverages existing relationships built throughout your career trajectory. Industry association leadership roles provide visibility within your professional community while contributing meaningful value. Mentorship program participation allows you to monetize your experience while building relationships with emerging leaders. The goal isn't to compete with younger professionals on energy or trend awareness - it's to demonstrate the strategic thinking and problem-solving capability that only comes through extensive experience. Your decades of experience represent unique intellectual property. The challenge is packaging and presenting that knowledge effectively. Personal branding has become a critical requirement for any Professional Services firm that wants to scale. Recent research from the Harvard Business Review highlights how digital networkers with strong LinkedIn and CRM strategies are outpacing traditional Trusted Advisors and Challenger models within the sector. The truth is, people buy from people. The outdated practice of relying on sales teams who aren't actually involved in the delivery to effectively sell your services is no longer effective. As a consultant, you are the product. Establishing your personal brand digitally through thought leadership and by clearly demonstrating the unique value you provide is essential. Firms that build a scalable personal branding process significantly reduce their reliance on outbound sales efforts. They readily attract inbound requests from senior executives seeking their expertise on critical business and talent issues. The focus shifts from constant outreach and fine-tuning sales pitches to commanding premium fees that truly reflect the value delivered. The firms that have mastered this approach are the ones driving the fastest growth. Source: Prof. Joe O'Mahoney
