Immersive learning isn’t the future—it’s happening now at the American University of Ras Al Khaimah. Over the past term at AURAK, my students and I embarked on a journey to transform traditional teaching materials into interactive, immersive learning modules using ThingLink. Across five departments—from AI and Chemistry to Biotechnology and Media Production—we’ve built something special: a scalable model for faculty-led, student-powered e-learning innovation. In this article, I reflect on our process, share real student projects, and explore the learning theories that guide this work. I also talk about why empowering faculty to design their own immersive content is more sustainable than outsourcing. Digital learning isn’t failing because of a lack of content. It’s failing because most tools weren’t built for the realities learners face. In many underserved communities, students may have a phone—but limited data, limited support, and limited motivation. This is where most digital solutions break. But it’s also where the opportunity for truly transformative, scalable impact begins. In my latest article with the Global Partnership for Education , I share how Solve Education! There’s a battle being fought in Enablement and L&D — and it’s not about content. It’s about how we deliver it. 🏰 In the old world, learning is static: hour-long e-learnings, webinars, PDFs, PowerPoints, and “microlearnings” (shorter e-learnings) buried deep in an LMS. These formats have their place (especially for really complex topics) but are overused, outdated, and ineffective — learners forget 90% within weeks or just don't engage in the first place. What do you actually remember from that internal webinar from last October When's the last time you actually took a course in the LMS? 🏙️ In the new world, learning is dynamic and relevant: concise, AI-generated (but human-reviewed), delivered in the flow of work, pushed based on internal data, and grounded in learning science. Think thoughtfully concise content, quick AI-graded scenarios, and daily nudges-to-action — delivered exactly when and where it’s needed. You can see this first-hand. Ask ChatGPT to tutor you — it gives concise lessons, adjusts based on your input, and gradually increases complexity. Tools like Arist use this same model to push targeted learning in moments of need via chat platforms like Teams or SMS, with enterprise safeguards built-in. 🌏 This wins in the real world. One tech company spent months making AI e-learnings that got <2% org adoption. They switched to building targeted experiences using AI and pushing them in Teams chat, and AI usage went up 215%. In the end, the best learning experience wins. And it’s not a 60-minute e-learning.

What if universities became the launchpads for 𝐀𝐈-𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭—not just academic hubs? "AI is making students lazy." We hear this a lot. But what if the opposite is true? Used well, AI doesn’t replace learning—it deepens it. It can help students ask better questions, receive instant feedback, unlock personalized pathways, expand access to research, and transition from memorization to curiosity, experimentation, and mastery. This is the shift I’ve been observing across Asia’s education landscape, and it was powerfully echoed at THE Digital Universities Asia 2025, where academic leaders and tech innovators explored how universities can evolve in an AI-powered world. One standout voice: Junfeng Li, VP of Huawei and CEO of Global Public Sector BU. His keynote made a bold case for transformation, backed up with tangible results. Huawei is partnering with universities globally to redesign how students learn, engage, and research in the digital age. Here’s what stood out: 1. From Passive Learning to Active Exploration Smart classrooms aren’t just delivering content faster—they're creating space for personalized, adaptive learning. Zhejiang Shuren University uses AI-driven lesson planning and 24/7 intelligent Q&A—tailoring the experience to students. 2. Every Major Needs Digital Fluency No matter the discipline, students need applied tech skills. Shenyang Institute of Technology integrates real-world enterprise practices into learning. With Huawei, it built 28 industry-aligned labs in 5G, HarmonyOS, AI, etc., cultivating job-ready talents and accelerating education transformation through deepening industry-academic integration. 3. Campuses as hands-on Innovation Hubs At Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Huawei co-built one of the world’s largest campus innovation hubs. Through diverse practical initiatives, this hub—featuring shared devices, open practice hub, bootcamps, and competition— effectively empowers thousands of students to become innovative and future-oriented talents. Huawei’s “1+3” Intelligent Education Solution also shows how it turns curiosity into capability. •1 Core: Hands-on digital training •3 Scenarios: Smart Classroom, Smart Campus, Research Data Management/Scientific Research This is not only about future-proofing students. It’s about present-empowering them. To think critically. To build creatively. To collaborate courageously, with each other 𝐚𝐧𝐝 AI. AI isn't a shortcut—it's a mirror, reflecting our institutions' readiness to evolve, our willingness to reimagine education, and our commitment to preparing the next generation. I’m grateful to collaborate with partners like Huawei, who are leading this transformation not just as tech providers, but as co-creators of a more intelligent and impactful education ecosystem. One major trend is the integration of EdTech and AI, which has made language learning more personalized and accessible. Tools like chatbots, virtual assistants, and adaptive learning platforms provide interactive experiences tailored to individual student progress. Additionally, advancements in voice recognition and feedback technology enhance learners' pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. As these tools become more sophisticated, ESL teachers can leverage them to create immersive learning experiences. The shift to online learning, accelerated by the pandemic, continues to shape ESL education. Many institutions are now adopting hybrid models that blend online and in-person instruction, offering students greater flexibility. This approach enhances engagement through multimedia resources, virtual exchanges, and global learning communities, allowing learners to connect with diverse cultures and perspectives. Another significant trend is the growing emphasis on functional and conversational English, particularly for adult learners. There is an increasing demand for courses that focus on practical skills relevant to workplace communication and integration into English-speaking environments. As a result, ESL curriculum design is shifting toward real-life applications, such as business English and cross-cultural communication, to better meet the needs of learners. Data-driven insights are also becoming integral to ESL education. Advanced analytics in learning management systems (LMS) provide real-time data on student performance, enabling teachers to adjust content and strategies effectively. Predictive analytics can identify learners who may need additional support or tailored resources, allowing for more targeted interventions that enhance student success. Moreover, immersive learning experiences using virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are beginning to transform ESL education. These technologies facilitate simulations and virtual field trips, allowing students to practice English in real-world contexts. By creating dynamic and memorable language acquisition experiences, VR and AR are making learning more engaging and effective.

I recently came across Google’s "Learn About," an intriguing experiment in structured, topic-based learning that’s different from our usual search experience. Rather than merely providing a list of resources, it organizes information into progressive, focused modules, designed to deepen understanding step-by-step. It’s not just about answering a quick question or browsing resources; it's about developing sustained knowledge in an area of interest. Implications for Higher Ed and Corporate Learning: • Structured, Self-Paced Learning: Unlike a traditional Google search, “Learn About” curates information in a way that feels more like an interactive course than a search engine. Imagine the impact this could have if learners, both students and professionals, began to turn to Google not only for quick answers but for comprehensive learning journeys. • Access to Knowledge on Demand: This approach could democratize learning even further by providing a model for accessible, just-in-time training and professional development, removing barriers like cost and schedule constraints. • Focus on Depth, Not Just Breadth: This experiment highlights Google’s commitment to supporting not just access to information but a deeper learning experience. It could encourage corporate training and higher ed institutions to rethink how they deliver digital learning experiences.
