    🧠 Working on your mindset is just as important as working on your skill set. 🛠️ What does every unicorn 🦄 have in common? A growth mindset. It's the one characteristic I've seen when growing #Data and #Analytics functions, that takes someone from being solid, to sought after. Use a "Head, Hands and Heart" model to frame your mindset development plan to take your performance to a whole new level. 🧠 Head - Beliefs and Values Spend some time reflecting on your current mindset. Do you think you can get better with effort? Is that important to you?  You need to believe that you can to the core, and make it a priority, for a growth mindset to work. 🖐 Hands - Application Get out there and learn new skills. Learn how to write "Hello, World" in that new language. Test different models and new tool features. People with a growth mindset are experimenting to see what works and what doesn't. Those experiences will reinforce that you can learn and do new things, when you get out there and keep trying. 💗 Heart - Recognition, Feedback and Motivation Unicorns have a secret - they don't go it alone. They have a trusted partner to support them, whether that's their leader, a peer or a coach. Now that person isn't just cheering you on, celebrating your progress and outcomes. They're also providing constructive feedback to keep you improving while working on your craft and mindset. Find your partner. When you're revisiting your development plan, spend some time to add new mindset objectives and actions to complement your skill set focus.     A few years ago, I found myself in a new role that required skills I didn’t yet have. With no formal training or mentor to guide me, I had to figure it out on my own. By observing colleagues, asking questions, and exploring resources like blogs and tutorials, I gradually gained the skills I needed. This experience taught me that some of the most valuable lessons come not from structured teaching but from staying curious, adaptable, and proactive. I’m sharing some of my learnings to embrace continuous learning at work—even when there’s no clear teacher. 1. Learn Through Experience Imagine a situation when a project that initially failed due to unforeseen client demands. This is a clear sign of not involving stakeholders right from the word go and clear communication through documentation along with expectation setting. If you have ever faced a situation like this, leverage the past experience and build on.  2. Learn From Your Colleagues In the workplace, anyone can be a teacher. Observing and collaborating with peers, managers, or even subordinates can reveal new techniques, perspectives, or skills you might not discover alone. The key is to stay open and receptive. 3. Learn From Situations Not all lessons come from people. Challenges like tight deadlines, organisational changes, or crises can teach resilience, adaptability, and resourcefulness. Observing how you navigate these situations helps you identify areas for growth and improvement. 4. Embrace Self-Learning When there’s no formal teacher, take charge of your learning journey. Seek out books, online courses, blogs, or podcasts. Experiment with tools and approaches. By taking ownership, you turn uncertainty into an opportunity for growth. 5. Cultivate a Learning Mindset A learning mindset transforms ordinary moments into opportunities for improvement. Stay curious, ask questions, and embrace the process of unlearning and relearning as needed. Being adaptable and reflective ensures continuous growth. Continuous learning doesn’t always follow a clear path or involve formal lessons. The most meaningful growth often happens through self-discovery, collaboration, and adaptability. By staying open-minded and proactive, you can uncover opportunities to learn and grow in every experience. So, even when it feels like no one is explicitly teaching you, remember this: every challenge, interaction, and situation has a lesson to offer. The key is to stay curious, take action, and keep moving forward. Start where you are, learn from what’s around you, and let our journey of growth unfold.

Here’s why: Leaders who resist change risk holding their companies back. But those who love learning? They stay resilient, adaptable, and ready for the future. They’re always growing, finding new ways to lead, and inspiring their teams to do the same. Don’t wait for companies to provide you with training, tools, and opportunities. You drive your career! Fix the pace of your development: raise your hand, deliver results, and demonstrate a growth mindset. It would obviously be fantastic if everything was handed to you, but let’s stick to reality rather than expecting a dream world. You are accountable for your career, and it’s in your hands. How can you stay ahead? 1 - Keep learning skills that make you adaptable. Raise your hand for new projects, step beyond your current role, and seek real-world experience. Read, explore free online courses, and focus on building the skills you know you need. It all starts with you—no one else can make the effort for you! A few weeks ago, I spoke with a well-known coach who shared an inspiring story. He started learning the basics of coaching on his own, using free YouTube videos! He practiced with friends for free, then connected with a mentor who helped him refine his skills and build his confidence. This is a real example that shows what’s possible. Believe in yourself, stay consistent, and work hard to achieve your goals. 2 - Connect with industry peers and leaders. Take advantage of mentoring and sponsorship, and ask for work shadowing. 3 - Attend external events to get fresh insights. 4 - Share your knowledge. Cooperation builds strong teams and strengthens learning. In today’s fast-changing world, this is essential. 5 - Ask questions, challenge the usual ways, and welcome new ideas. Embrace diversity, challenge the status quo, and don’t be afraid to take risks. Don’t be afraid to experiment! Trying new approaches helps you grow and adapt, turning every step into lasting progress. That’s how you build real value and become truly talented in today’s market.

    In my career, I’ve often been the biggest enemy of my success. My mindset held me back for so long before I finally recognized and broke the pattern. I was trapped in a fixed mindset. When I first came to the USA as an international student, I often thought, "I'm just not good at this." That’s a fixed mindset in action. As a result, I was surrounded by: -my fear of failure -my imposter syndrome which destroyed my creativity and crushed my potential. Here’s how I finally broke free: ►Changed the way I talked to myself: As an international student, I was often my own harshest critic. I paid attention to my inner voice and changed how I reacted to failure and criticism. Instead of saying, "I can't do this," I started saying, "I can learn how to do this." ►The Power of 'Yet': It was a game-changer. It’s not that I couldn't pivot my career to product management or get interview calls for internships. it’s that I couldn't do it yet. This simple shift made a huge difference. ►Focused On Self-Improvement Regularly setting aside time to learn something new reminded me that my abilities were not fixed but could be developed. I kept learning. ►Surround Yourself with Growth Mindset Individuals: The people I spent the most time with influenced my mindset. I surrounded myself with people (my boss on campus - Joel Ramirez, Senior pastor Bryan Myers, and others.) who saw challenges as opportunities, who grew in the face of setbacks, and who saw the effort as the first step to mastery. Remember - the choice is yours: Be trapped by your limitations, or give your mind permission to embrace growth. For all international students and job seekers, building a growth mindset can transform your journey in the USA. Stay positive. Stay confident. And stay empowered. You’ve got this!

    Here’s what I do every day to grow a growth mindset. A growth mindset isn’t about hacks or motivation. It’s about building daily habits that shape how your mind responds to challenges. Here’s my daily framework: → Question my default reactions Before I react, I ask: “Is this helping me grow?” → Choose learning over comfort If it doesn’t stretch me, I don’t do it. → Track decisions, not tasks Progress shows up in decisions made, not in busyness checked off. → Limit noise, protect focus I curate inputs - the people, posts, and podcasts that actually elevate thinking. → Start each day with a promise to myself Small, consistent agreements build internal credibility that fuels growth.     Cultivating Growth Mindset The catalyst for change ✅ Embracing a growth mindset can make you better equipped to navigate challenges, innovate, and thrive. How can we do this? In contrast to a fixed mindset, a growth mindset can be developed through dedication and learning. Spark your curiosity with: ⭐Learning opportunities ⭐Model adaptability ⭐Staying informed and normalize failure as a stepping stone for learning. Sharing stories of setbacks can create a safe environment. I will start! One time, I failed to provide an essential update to one of the clients. This caused frustration and tested our trust relationship. No excuses, just the truth - missed the step! Failing is normal, but we have to: ✔️Acknowledge it and learn from it ✔️Reflect on it ✔️Be open to change and recognize that we are humans and prone to errors. The willingness to experiment, share ideas, and develop strategies is crucial in a growth mindset. If not, we will tend to: 👎Limit our potential 👎Have low morale 👎Be ineffective in problem-solving and these are restricting our competitive and creative abilities.     Embracing Growth Mindset - A Key to Unlocking School Potential During my time as a school principal, one concept stood out for its profound ability to transform schools - the Growth Mindset. It's the belief that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. And as school leaders, fostering this mindset is not just beneficial; it's essential. Why Growth Mindset? Research by Carol Dweck and others has illuminated that students who embrace growth mindsets are more likely to persevere in the face of challenges, show resilience in the face of failures, and ultimately achieve higher levels of success. But its power isn't limited to students; it's equally transformative for teachers and staff. Implementing a growth mindset begins with ourselves. As leaders, we must model the attitude we wish to instil in our educators and students. Here’s a simple yet powerful strategy to start: ·      Reflective practice - encourage your staff to adopt reflective practices. After a lesson or a day at school, ask them to reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and how they can improve. Emphasis should be on progress, not perfection. ·      Praise effort, not just achievement - shift the focus from praising innate talent to acknowledging effort, strategy, and progress. This reinforces the value of persistence and encourages a learning-oriented environment. ·      Professional Development Workshops - organise workshops that focus on growth mindset development for educators. This could include problem-solving scenarios, collaborative discussions, and sharing personal stories of growth and resilience. By integrating these practices, you can foster an environment where challenges are embraced, effort is celebrated, and continuous learning is the norm, not the exception. Remember, the goal isn't to eliminate setbacks but to build a community that sees them as natural steps in the learning process. As we nurture growth mindsets, we don't just teach; we inspire.
