The current lull in news about the financial position of universities does not mean that the UK’s higher education sector is not under immense pressure. Rising costs, frozen tuition fees, the decline in international students, political demands for “value for money,” and shifting workforce needs driven by AI and sustainability are all colliding to create a system that is no longer sustainable in its current form. “Radical collaboration”, a new report from KPMG and Mills & Reeve, offers a clear message: universities can’t simply do more with less. They must rethink how they work together, moving beyond institutional pride and financial firefighting to embrace bold, long-term collaboration. This isn’t about bailing out failing institutions but about reshaping the sector to deliver research excellence, broader access, stronger regional impact, and long-term resilience and the report outlines key recommendations for the future: ➡️ Recognise the current HE model is no longer sustainable ➡️ Focus collaboration on outcomes, not just cost-cutting ➡️ Define clear purpose and objectives for any partnership ➡️ Prioritise long-term strategic leadership over institutional pride ➡️ Consider a range of models from alliances to full mergers ➡️ Create the right conditions: strong leadership, aligned values, clear communication ➡️ Address cultural and regulatory barriers early ➡️ Ensure government provides enabling support (legal, financial, regulatory) ➡️ Treat radical collaboration as a proactive strategy for sector sustainability The question now is whether the sector has the leadership, political will, and strategic clarity to act or whether it will continue to delay the inevitable. #HigherEducation #UniversityStrategy #Leadership #Collaboration #Policy #HEReform #RadicalCollaboration #FutureOfHE #Universities #PublicValue

Yesterday, I testified before Congress on AI and the future of higher education. My central message was simple: AI alone will not improve higher education. The analogy I used was electricity. Early factories adopted electric motors but saw little productivity gain because they kept the same organizational designs and processes. Only later, when they redesigned themselves around electricity, did productivity surge. Higher education is at a similar moment. Faculty and students are already using AI at scale. Yet most colleges have seen few learning leaps, few dramatic improvements in student success, and few efficiency gains. That's not because AI isn't powerful. It's because the challenge isn't primarily technological. It's organizational. Real progress will require colleges and universities to rethink their resources, processes, and priorities. That creates several opportunities: Reinvent assessment and increase academic rigor through oral defenses, presentations, demonstrations, and other forms of authentic assessment. Use AI to provide more meaningful feedback and support student success. Reduce administrative overhead and redirect resources toward students. Integrate more real-world work into learning so students graduate with both experience and the ability to use AI effectively in professional settings. Create room for new AI-native institutions and models focused relentlessly on student outcomes. The question isn't whether AI will be used in higher education. It already is. The question is whether institutions will redesign around it. With a focus on student outcomes, AI can become not a threat to higher education's value, but an enabler of its renewal. “Meeting students where they are” has become a familiar refrain in higher education. But - what does it mean? For many, the phrase is interpreted metaphorically: understand students’ starting points, empathise with their challenges, personalise their learning. But we must also take it literally. Students are not where we imagined they would be post-Covid. They are not back in the lecture theatre. Instead, they’re working extra shifts, caring for siblings or ageing parents, training for national competitions, or managing chronic illness. They’re commuting long distances, or not commuting at all. And even when they are online, they’re multitasking, catching up, and learning in short bursts between other responsibilities. Universities are beginning to respond. In Australia, Regional University Study Hubs are locally embedded, tech-enabled spaces that bring higher education into the everyday geographies of students’ lives. The model is expanding, being trialled in suburban communities where participation in traditional campus life is constrained by distance, cost, and complexity. Scheduling is also being reimagined. Institutions such as Victoria University have adopted block teaching models, allowing students to focus on one subject at a time. This deepens engagement and better fits the lives of students juggling work or family. Others are trialling evening intensives, rolling start dates, or asynchronous-first models. Some are experimenting with mobile classrooms or co-locating learning in community hubs like libraries or health clinics. While institutional change moves slowly, instructors can adapt more quickly. Some have moved the bulk of content delivery online, not as lecture recordings, but as purpose-designed modules. This frees up classroom time for what can’t be done well online: guest panels with industry experts, facilitated workshops, debates, and simulations. Others design assessments that invite students to apply theory to their lives, by analysing work or other experiences. Instructors have sliding participation windows, offer multiple modes of contribution, or use voice notes or video clips to respond to student queries, replacing anonymity with presence. Instructors are exploring AI tools to personalise the learning journey, helping students get unstuck with concept explanations tailored to their level of understanding, or providing feedback on formative work. Such tools allow us to also meet students where they are in their current grasp of a concept, their confidence, and their pace. To truly meet students where they are, we need more than convenience. We need redesign that raises our aspirations for the kinds of relationships, rhythms, and structures that contemporary learners need. Meeting students where they are means recognising that their lives are rich, complex, and constrained and that higher education must fit into that world, not ask students to leave it behind. #HigherEducation #Universities

80-90% of students are already using AI at scale. Yet, only 9% of Chief Information Officers believe their institutions are ready for it. That's a leadership crisis, not just a technology gap. Higher education has a well-practiced response to disruption: study it, committee it, and implement it over several budget cycles. That playbook breaks when technology evolves week by week. The internet took 30 years to reach mass adoption. Mobile took 15 years. AI achieved it in under 3 years. In my conversation with Drumm McNaughton on the Changing Higher Ed podcast, we discussed the 3 most important shifts to make: 👉🏼 Reinvent the Core Universities must reallocate up to 40% of internal capacity away from transactional administrative work. Automating back-office workflows isn't just about cutting costs; it's about freeing up your institutional talent to focus entirely on student mentorship and experience. 👉🏼 Reinvent the Credential The four-year degree as a static, one-time credentialing event is losing ground to modular, competency-based capabilities. Build for the human skills employers cannot find and AI cannot replicate: ethical judgment, cross-disciplinary synthesis, and a fundamentally entrepreneurial mindset. 👉🏼 Reinvent the Classroom 89% of students fear AI will replace their entry-level role (up from 64% a year ago). Banning AI tools is the wrong move. Faculty must shift from being the source of content to the curators of context, building agentic workflows alongside students rather than allowing shadow AI to widen the gap further. The emergence of 𝒄𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒎 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝑨𝑰-𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐𝒐𝒍𝒔, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒉𝒚𝒃𝒓𝒊𝒅 𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 is disrupting the traditional one-size-fits-all model. Students now have to acclimatize to a world where problem-solving, digital literacy, and thinking critically are as relevant as scores. But along with opportunity comes pressure. Deloitte just dropped its 2026 Higher Education Trends report, and if you work in or adjacent to higher ed, it deserves a close read. The headline: "America's higher education sector is poised for reinvention as declining enrollment, university funding cuts, advancing AI, and evolving regulations reshape the college landscape." Here are the five trends shaping what comes next — and what I believe they mean for institutions willing to move: 1. The revenue model is eroding. The demographic cliff is real and uneven. The map below tells the story — the West is down 20%, the Northeast down 17%, and states like California (−29%), Illinois (−32%), and Hawaii (−33%) facing generational declines. The South is the only region projected to see growth. Institutions still operating on pre-2020 enrollment assumptions need a new plan. 2. The conversation has to shift from "cost of college" to "value of a credential." Students are increasingly asking one question: Will this get me a job? Deloitte cites Gallup data showing job/career outcomes outrank every other reason for attending college by nearly 3x. And yet, only 12% of non-degree credentials lead to meaningful earnings gains. The programs that survive will be the ones that can demonstrate ROI — clearly, credibly, in real time. 3. Federal research funding is in free fall. The government provides $50B in annual research funding. Philanthropy covers $5B. That gap cannot be closed by donors. Research universities are already cutting staff, freezing hiring, and reducing PhD admissions. The institutions that adapt fastest — with leaner structures and more transparent cost models — will be best positioned when the dust settles. 4. Mergers and partnerships are no longer a last resort. 19% of college presidents are already having internal merger conversations. Deloitte is clear: institutions that wait too long won't be attractive targets. The challenge isn't just operational — it's cultural. Merged entities that fail to function as one unit destroy more value than they create. 5. The global landscape is shifting. International students represent roughly 6% of U.S. enrollment and often pay full tuition. That revenue is at risk. A career advisor told me recently, tears in her eyes: “I can’t promote my services anymore… I just can’t meet the demand.” Her numbers? - 1 advisor for 1,862 students. - Time reduced to 75%. - Team of 3 cut down to 1. And she’s not the exception. Ratios across campuses look like this: 1: 1,470 1: 1,926 1: 2,918 1: 8,632 Here’s the reality: career services will never scale if we keep trying to do everything 1:1. It’s not sustainable. And it leaves too many students behind. The path forward? ✔️ Group coaching models ✔️ Technology that extends—not replaces—advisors ✔️ Faculty partnerships to embed career in the classroom ✔️ Alumni and employer mentoring at scale Scaling isn’t the opposite of personal. Done right, it creates more access, earlier touchpoints, and better outcomes. If we want to improve persistence, retention, and graduation rates, we can’t cling to outdated service models. The question is: are we ready to prioritize scale over tradition?
