    I spent the day with academicians reflecting on a simple but important question: Are we teaching subjects, or are we shaping thinking? What became clear through the dialogue is that education today needs more than incremental change. It needs reimagination. From curriculum to pedagogy to assessments, every layer must evolve in the context of Design Thinking and AI. Design Thinking, in my view, is not a tool or a course. It is a shift in worldview. When the way we see changes, knowledge reorganises. When knowledge changes, capability evolves. And when capability evolves, outcomes transform. Without this shift in thinking, any change we make will remain superficial. One of the core gaps in our system is this: - We focus on content, but not on purpose - Students learn subjects, but not why they are learning them - Problem solving is taught, but problem framing is not Education must move from content delivery to problem orientation. AI now accelerates this shift. For decades, education has been centred around answers. Today, answers are easily available. What is becoming scarce is the ability to ask the right questions. This changes the role of education fundamentally: - From answers to questions - From memory to thinking - From linear learning to multi-dimensional problem solving It also requires a rethink of assessments. Not just evaluating answers, but evaluating how students frame problems and approach solutions. At the same time, we must be conscious of the risks. Easy access to knowledge can weaken cognitive depth. Foundations matter. Concepts matter. Thinking cannot be outsourced. The balance is clear: - Human for thinking - AI for doing Another important insight is that change in education cannot be driven through isolated interventions. It requires sustained effort, dialogue, and a structured approach to transformation. Institutions will have to identify their friction points, prioritise them, and work through them over time. What encouraged me most was the intent across institutions. There is openness to rethink, to experiment, and to evolve. The opportunity ahead is significant. To move from teaching subjects to shaping thinkers, from solving problems to defining them, and from producing graduates to building agenda setters. That, to me, is the real purpose of education in an AI-first world.     How well are we preparing our young learners for the demands of the 21st-century workforce? As the 21st century redefines the boundaries of work and technology, the question is no longer if we should change, but how fast teachers and other stakeholders can adapt their strategies to prepare our young learners for the realities of this new era. The integration of digital technology and AI has fundamentally changed how we communicate with one another, work, access information and solve problems. It has become an extension of how we think and operate in the world. As a result, it has become essential for contemporary education to evolve in response to these realities. In the past, teaching and learning centred on the transmission of knowledge to learners and ensuring that they can reproduce the knowledge when required. However, in an era where information is readily available at the click of a button, this approach is no longer productive. Digital technologies and AI tools can now perform many of the tasks that were traditionally taught in schools. Consequently, the purpose of education MUST be redefined. We must stop training learners to compete with machines! Instead, we must cultivate the capacities that technology cannot easily replicate: Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) like critical reflection, logical reasoning and creative problem-solving. If we fail to teach these skills, we risk preparing learners for a world that no longer exists. Here is how we shift the needle today: For Educators: ▶️ Don’t skip the basics, but don’t linger there either. ▶️Allow students to grapple with complex problems without giving them the answer immediately. This helps build their cognitive “muscle” required for creative problem solving. ▶️Encourage students to build their digital storytelling skills. They should find different ways to design their thoughts and perspectives outside of the traditional essay. For Instructional Designers: ▶️Move beyond multiple-choice quizzes. Design graphic organiser-style exercises and role-playing scenarios for analysis, peer-review forums for evaluation and project-based submissions for creation. For Curriculum Developers: ▶️Create units that connect subjects together. ▶️Ensure that national or school-wide standards place more importance on the application of knowledge than on the volume of content covered. ▶️Explicitly build design thinking into the curriculum as a formal methodology for problem-solving. For School Owners & Administrators: ▶️Shift teacher training away from managing classrooms and towards “facilitating” discussions in the classroom. ▶️Redesign learning spaces to allow for collaborative zones that facilitate group discussion. ▶️Measure school success not just by standardised test scores (these tests lower-level skills), but by student portfolios and projects. #Education #LessonPlanning #EdTech #HigherOrderThinking #BloomsTaxonomy #FutureOfLearning #TeachingStrategies

    There is a fundamental shift in learner and learning expectations with recognized credentials at the heart of the change. In my recent Engineering the Future Workforce podcast conversation with Jessica Silwick, CPA, MBA, CAE, COO of ABET, we explored how quality-assured credentials are creating new pathways into STEM careers while maintaining rigorous standards. Jessica emphasized aligning learning outcomes with industry needs and involving stakeholders in the design process to ensure credentials deliver real value and impact. Learners want their efforts in microcredentials to be fully recognized, integrated with their program of study and credit bearing. A recent article by Adil Husain titled “The Quiet Credential Takeover”, discusses the strong student demand for credit-bearing microcredentials. It notes 94% of students want microcredentials to count toward their degrees (up from 55%). That demand pushes engineering education to become more flexible, accessible and responsive to industry needs. This will open doors for talent through stackable, bite-sized learning opportunities. As Jessica noted, “the traditional one size fits all degree model is giving way to more flexible pathways that reflect how people actually learn and work.” Credentials allow learners to "create a trajectory for themselves, their families, and their communities" - especially those who may not fit the traditional education model.     Education has looked largely the same for over 200 years—rows of desks, one teacher at the front, a focus on uniformity over individuality. But it didn’t happen by accident. Modern schooling was shaped during the Industrial Revolution—a time when societies needed a compliant, punctual, and standardised workforce. Schools were designed to mirror factories: structured timetables, clear hierarchies, and an emphasis on obedience and consistency. That model made sense then. But our learners have changed. The world they are preparing for has changed. So why hasn’t education evolved at the same pace? Today’s students need more than content delivery. They need: • Critical thinking and problem-solving • Emotional intelligence and resilience • Flexibility in how, where, and when they learn • Support that recognises neurodiversity and individual needs If we want to truly serve 21st-century learners, we must move beyond traditional models and design learning environments that are adaptive, inclusive, and future-focused.     Students Are Changing and So Must We Higher education has always been about growth and transformation, but the students walking onto our campuses today are not the same as those of ten, five, or even two years ago. They are digital natives who expect real-time communication. They balance multiple responsibilities: family, work, community all while pursuing their degrees. They demand flexibility in schedules, delivery, and support. And most importantly, they are seeking purpose and connection to people who will guide, mentor, and believe in them. If our systems, policies, and mindsets remain static, we risk failing the very people we exist to serve. Evolution in higher education isn’t optional, it’s our responsibility. That means rethinking: • How we communicate (clear, transparent, immediate). • How we design policies (student-centered, flexible, inclusive). • How we define success (not just enrollment numbers, but outcomes, persistence, and wellness). • How we foster human connection (faculty, staff, advisors, and peers as touchpoints of belonging and purpose). The future of education belongs to those who can listen, adapt, and evolve with the changing needs of students. True leadership is measured not by the structures we preserve, but by the futures we empower. Admissions is the window; Financial Aid is the door. Together, we must ensure students don’t just enroll, but thrive. When students evolve, institutions that rise with them don’t just remain relevant, they become transformative.

    We talk a lot about innovation in higher education, but too often the conversation stays abstract. Big ideas get plenty of airtime, while the harder work of rethinking how learning actually works is slower to follow. Pathways like credit for prior learning and competency-based education are not experiments anymore. They reflected a clear shift in what adult learners expect: recognition for what they already know, transparent pathways forward and learning designed around real lives, not idealized ones. What’s changing is not just delivery, but expectations. Learners are asking institutions to be more intentional about how learning is assessed, valued and connected to progress. That requires a willingness to challenge long-standing assumptions. UPCEA’s 2026 predictions reinforce this direction.     For decades, universities have focused on one central mission: expanding access to education. And in many ways, we have succeeded. Across the world, we have built thousands of institutions. Enrollment has grown dramatically. More young people than ever before are entering higher education. Yet an uncomfortable question remains. Is the education we provide truly aligned with the world students are entering? Many graduates still struggle to transition confidently into the professional environment. This is not a reflection of students’ ability or ambition. It is a signal that the structure of higher education must evolve. The world our students graduate into is defined by: • rapid technological transformation • interdisciplinary collaboration • real-time problem solving • global competition However, many academic systems still operate within rigid disciplinary silos and static curricula. The challenge before universities today is therefore not simply to teach more, but to teach differently. Three shifts are becoming essential. 1. Learning must become experiential. Students should work on real-world challenges, not only theoretical exercises. 2. Industry must become an active participant in education. Not merely as recruiters at the end of a degree, but as contributors throughout the learning journey. 3. Adaptability must become a core outcome of education. Graduates must be prepared not only for their first job, but for careers that will continuously evolve. Universities have always played a defining role in shaping societies. The responsibility before us now is greater. Education must evolve at the same pace as the world it seeks to serve.

    I just went through this bibliometric study on AI in higher education (2015–2024), and it made me think for a minute. AI in education is not new anymore, but how fast everything has shifted in just the last couple of years is new to higher education. We’ve been talking about AI in education for a while with its pros and cons… but this report really shows that we’ve entered a completely different phase. A few things to mention that really interesting to me from this paper: 📈 The growth is not gradual, it’s explosive! A 67% annual growth rate in research is huge. And what really caught my attention is how output basically tripled in one year (2023 → 2024). That says a lot about how ChatGPT changed the conversation almost overnight. 🧠 The focus has clearly shifted! Earlier work was more about tools and systems (tutoring systems, analytics, automation). Now the dominant themes are things like academic integrity, AI ethics, assessment redesign. That feels like a maturity shift. ⚖️ We’ve moved from excitement → reflection This part resonated with me the most. The field is no longer just asking “How do we use AI?” It’s asking “Should we use it this way and what are the consequences?” 🌍 This is a global conversation now The US, China, UK, Australia are leading, but you can see growing contributions from other regions too. AI in education is no longer localized, it’s becoming a shared global research space. 🤝 Collaboration is driving the field forward The number of co-authored papers and international collaborations stood out. This isn’t siloed work, because now people from all around the globe are building this space together. We should pay attention to AI Fellowship programs around the globe. 🎓 What this means for us in education? From my perspective, this validates something I see every day working with faculty: We’re not just integrating AI into courses… We’re rethinking assessment, learning design, academic technology, institutional impact and even what it means to demonstrate understanding. 💡 The biggest takeaway for me: AI in higher education isn’t just scaling… It’s evolving in what it cares about. ➡️ From tools → to impact ➡️ From adoption → to ethics ➡️ From experimentation → to integration And that shift feels significant.     A breakthrough moment in last month's classroom observations completely reframed how I think about AI literacy standards. After extensively studying student engagement with AI, a pattern emerged that challenges our traditional approach to educational frameworks. Looking through my field notes, I kept finding evidence of three essential strands of AI literacy - rhetorical analysis, media literacy, and computational understanding. While we need to teach and assess each distinctly, their true power emerges in how they work together in authentic learning situations. One particularly striking observation was watching a high school class engage with AI in a deep research project. They moved naturally between checking facts, analyzing the AI's narrative choices, and questioning how its training shaped these perspectives. Each skill remained clear and trackable, but their integration created deeper insights than any single strand could achieve. What's emerging from my research isn't just another educational framework – it's a map of how AI literacy actually develops in real learning environments. Our traditional approach to standards needs to evolve just as rapidly as the technology itself. I'm increasingly convinced that what I'm calling 'adaptive AI literacy' - where distinct competencies remain clear but work in powerful combination - better reflects how people actually learn to work with AI. The standards should honor both the individual skills and their dynamic interaction. This is just the beginning of a larger conversation about how we structure and assess AI literacy.     Back to School Night took an unexpected and fascinating turn! 🎒 As a parent, you go in ready for syllabi and teacher introductions, but I was genuinely intrigued to learn that one of my son's high school classes will be writing their own AI policy for independent research assignments. This isn't just about rules; it's about navigating the future. In an age where AI tools are increasingly accessible, the conversation isn't if students will use them, but how they will use them responsibly and effectively. This initiative perfectly encapsulates the evolving journey of education. It highlights the critical balance we need to strike: ✅ Empowering students with technological literacy: Understanding AI's capabilities and limitations is no longer optional; it's a fundamental skill. ✅Honing timeless critical thinking: Even with AI, the human element of evaluating information, formulating arguments, and generating original thought remains paramount. ✅ Developing strong presentation and communication skills: AI can assist, but the ability to articulate one's findings clearly and persuasively is uniquely human and more important than ever.
