    Many people talk about inclusion in schools. But inclusion is not simply about placement. It is about whether a child’s “cup” is actually being filled. In a mainstream classroom, inclusion happens when the environment is intentionally designed so every child can participate, regulate, and feel safe enough to learn. So what does that look like in practice? 1. Predictable structure - Many neurodivergent students thrive when the day is predictable. Visual timetables, clear routines, and advance warning of transitions reduce cognitive load and anxiety. 2. Flexible ways to engage - Not every student learns best through listening and writing. Allowing movement, using visuals, breaking tasks into smaller steps, or offering alternative ways to show understanding can remove barriers to participation. 3. Regulation before expectation - A dysregulated brain cannot access learning. Quiet spaces, movement breaks, sensory tools, or short reset opportunities can help students return to a state where thinking is possible. 4. Strength-based teaching - Instead of focusing solely on what a student struggles with, identify what they are good at and use it as an entry point into learning. Confidence often grows from competence. 5. Psychological safety - Students need to feel safe making mistakes. When classrooms emphasise curiosity over correctness, students are more willing to attempt difficult tasks. 6. Voice and agency - Inclusion also means listening. Giving students choices, inviting their perspective, and involving them in problem-solving helps them feel valued. When these conditions exist, something powerful happens. Flexible starts, safe transitions – For some pupils, the hardest part of the day is simply arriving. Schools can design softer entry points. 4. Curriculum that connects – Make learning meaningful, accessible, and linked to strengths, not just deficits. 5. Voice and choice – Involve children with SEND in decisions about their routines, adjustments and supports. 6. Joined-up support – Families, SENCOs, attendance leads, and external agencies must work as one team, not in silos. 7. Visible adjustments – Normalise reasonable adjustments so they aren’t seen as “special” or stigmatised. 8. Celebrate presence, not just performance – Reward the effort of showing up, not just the attainment once there. 9. Train every adult – SEND awareness shouldn’t sit with a few specialists; it should be a whole-staff skillset. 10.     Before the brain can learn, it asks one question: “Am I safe here?” Not just physically safe. But emotionally safe. Predictably safe. Relationally safe. Calm, connected classrooms answer that question through design. One of the most underestimated influences on behaviour, regulation, and learning is not the child. It is the environment around them. Every brain is constantly responding to the conditions it sits within. Over time, through experience, observation, and working alongside teachers, I began to notice consistent patterns. When classrooms are designed to support nervous system safety: Regulation becomes easier. Independence increases. Connection strengthens. Learning becomes more accessible. Not because children are forced to comply. But because their brain no longer needs to stay in protection. Here are 16 habits I consistently see in calm, connected classrooms: • Predictable routines support nervous system safety • Clear expectations reduce uncertainty and cognitive load • Organised spaces strengthen independence and confidence • Safe, welcoming environments support emotional security • Movement is built into the day to support regulation • Clear transitions protect regulation during change • Emotional safety allows learning to remain accessible • Cognitive load is managed to support thinking and success • Sensory load is reduced to support calm, focused brains • Regulation is built throughout the day, purposefully embedded in routines • Strong connection creates relational safety for learning • Adults regulate themselves first, modelling nervous system stability • Autonomy strengthens agency and motivation • Creativity supports emotional expression and balance • Repair strengthens trust and relational safety • Emotional expression is supported, not suppressed These are not just classroom strategies.     Autism acceptance in the classroom means making room for how Autistic brains actually learn. Classrooms, from kindergarten through graduate school, are often full of barriers for Autistic students: unclear instructions, sensory overwhelm, neuronormative expectations around what "paying attention" is supposed to look like. Not exhaustive, but some of what acceptance in action can look like in the classroom: - Provide examples and templates for assignments. Many Autistic students need visual context before we can start a task. - Embrace neurodivergent whole body listening. Moving, doodling, and looking away often help us focus, not the opposite. - Cultivate a sensory-friendly environment. Lower the ambient sensory load (lighting, sound, unpredictability) so students aren't spending all their capacity filtering. - Support executive functioning by breaking assignments into smaller, actionable tasks. Good for every learner, essential for students with executive functioning challenges. - Allow for sensory breaks and sensory detox spaces. When the sensory system is overwhelmed, learning stops. A quiet place to regulate isn't a reward for good behavior; it's part of how learning happens. - Provide clear, visual schedules and instructions. Ambiguity can shut us down before we've even started. For me, when an assignment came with no example, I'd spend the first hour googling — not avoiding the work, just looking for something visual my brain could anchor to. And when instructions were unclear, I'd either freeze or do the whole assignment instead of the one part that was required. What else would you add?     Autistic distress should never be accepted as just part of the school day. When we ask what is making participation hard, we can begin to change the environment and adapt the way we teach. That may mean reducing sensory overwhelm by lowering noise, avoiding sudden loud sounds, dimming harsh lighting, offering quieter work areas, reducing visual clutter, and allowing headphones, movement, or breaks before a child reaches distress. It may mean increasing predictability by showing what is happening now, what is coming next, how long a task will last, and what the student can do when they need help or a pause. It may mean adapting teaching by giving visual or written directions, modeling without pressure, allowing extra processing time, breaking tasks into smaller steps, reducing handwriting or speaking demands, and offering more than one way for the student to show what they know. When we adapt the environment and the teaching, we stop asking Autistic students to carry a burden of tolerance. And we create more access to learning, safety, and meaningful participation.

    🏫 Teaching students with learning disabilities requires more than support, it requires a different approach to learning. 🧠 One of the most common misconceptions is that struggling students simply need more practice or effort. In reality, students with learning disabilities often face underlying processing differences that make traditional instruction inefficient or inaccessible. ❓ Why learning can feel so difficult: Students with learning disabilities are often working significantly harder than their peers. They may be: • Using excessive cognitive effort to decode or encode information • Struggling with working memory while completing tasks • Experiencing slow processing speed, making it hard to keep up • Having difficulty with automaticity (skills don’t become “second nature”) • Becoming overwhelmed by multi-step directions or open-ended tasks As a result, what may appear as inattention, avoidance, or lack of motivation is often: ➡️ cognitive overload ➡️ inefficient processing pathways ➡️ frustration from repeated difficulty Why traditional instruction can fall short: Many learning environments rely on: • Implicit teaching (“pick it up as you go”) • Fast pacing and heavy language demands • Independent work before mastery • Assumptions of foundational skill automaticity For students with learning differences, these demands can exceed their current processing capacity, leading to breakdowns in learning. ‼️ What effective teaching actually looks like: Supporting these learners involves intentional, structured instruction that reduces cognitive load and increases access. Evidence-based strategies include: ✔️ Explicit, systematic instruction (especially for reading and math) ✔️ Breaking tasks into smaller, sequential steps ✔️ Multisensory teaching approaches (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) ✔️ Frequent modeling and guided practice ✔️ Built-in repetition with structure (not just volume) ✔️ Visual supports, graphic organizers, and scaffolding ✔️ Allowing additional processing time and flexible pacing 📓 The role of executive functioning: Many students with learning disabilities also experience challenges with: • Planning and organization • Task initiation • Sustained attention • Self-monitoring and error correction Directly teaching these skills, and embedding supports into instruction—is often critical for success. 🧠 Students with learning disabilities are not struggling because they lack ability.
