Tamilnadu Traffic police stopped fining people for parking. Instead, they did something… Way smarter! We’ve all seen it - “No Parking” signs everywhere, followed by hefty fines for violators. But ask yourself: does issuing fines actually solve the user’s problem? The answer is no. People still need somewhere to park. Tamil Nadu Traffic Police did something different. They thought from first principles: What does the user actually need? A place to park their vehicle. So instead of just saying “No Parking” on busy streets, they’re putting up “FREE Parking” signs directing people to available spaces nearby. What they did: → Identified unused government spaces (like school grounds near flyovers) → Converted them into free public parking → Added clear signage with locations → Included QR codes for easy navigation Less traffic congestion, fewer violations, happier citizens, and actual problem-solving instead of just enforcement. This is design thinking in public service. Instead of punishing the symptom (illegal parking), they addressed the root cause (lack of parking spaces). When users repeatedly “break the rules,” maybe the system needs fixing, not the users. Good design solves the actual need, not just the visible problem. Remove friction instead of adding punishment. Our transport systems are stuck in a doom loop. Here is how to escape it. 🚗 Every morning, you sit in traffic that's worse than last year. So what do we do? Build more roads and car parks. This leaves less money for buses, trains, walking paths, and bike lanes. More people have no choice but to drive. Traffic gets worse. We build more roads. The cycle repeats. This is the transport doom loop. But there's a way out. Here's how smart cities are breaking free: 1. Charge for road use 🛣️ New Zealand and Iceland charge electric vehicles to use roads. This reduces traffic and raises money for better transport. 2. Make parking cost money But here's the key: spend that money on visible improvements. Better sidewalks. Protected bike lanes. Faster buses. 3. Teach people about induced demand When you build new roads, they fill up with more cars. Studies show people understand this when you explain it clearly. 4. Change the culture around walking and cycling Create school streets where kids can walk safely. Start walking buses and cycling groups for children. Close city and town centres to cars. 5. Give buses priority Dedicated bus lanes that cars can't use. Traffic lights that turn green faster for buses. 6. Leverage the sharing economy Supercharge car, bike and scooter sharing and car pooling to reduce the number of cars on our streets. The truth? We need to make alternatives better than driving. What happens when a city rethinks 🚗parking? Smart policies create more space for greenery, bikes, terraces, human interaction, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿! An accessible city centre, pleasant parking, and more room for quality public space. For years, Gemeente Leiden (currently guided by deputy mayor Ashley North) has been working toward exactly that balance. A recent evaluation (link in comments) shows that their approach to parking works — for people with and without cars! Historic city centres are under constant pressure. They are dense, popular, and multifunctional. Cars play a role — but when they dominate, everyone loses. 5 years ago, #Leiden shifted from a focus on capacity, to improving distribution. This simple principle had a powerful effect. Space was gradually reclaimed — for greenery, bicycles, terraces, and places to meet. Parking policy became a tool not just for mobility, but for urban quality. 🚛 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲: A Challenge...and an Opportunity 💡 America’s commercial truck drivers face a frustrating reality, there simply aren’t enough parking spaces. According to a recent FleetOwner article, there’s only 𝟭 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝟭𝟭 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 on the road. There are over 2.5 million commercial trucks that require parking on a daily basis. However, the US only has 697,000 official parking spaces - 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝟭.𝟳 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝟳𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱! I've been explaining Intelligent Transportation Systems to the public and they get the appeal immediately: less circling means less frustration, less emissions, and cleaner air. In Downtown San Jose, smart parking is getting smarter. Changeable message signs across the city give drivers real-time info on which garages have space. Less circling means less congestion, less fuel burned, and fewer emissions in the urban core. But these signs aren't just for parking. In an emergency, they broadcast evacuation alerts and public safety messages. They can promote upcoming community events too. This is what I tell the public about Intelligent Transportation Systems: they solve the first and last experience of every car trip, which is where you park. If you're going to choose to drive, we can at least make it smarter, faster, and cleaner. This is how we design for resiliency, convenience, and less stress in urban cores. Real-time parking information reduces wasted miles. Every minute spent circling is a minute of emissions and frustration. Smart systems guide drivers to open parking before they waste fuel and time. This is infrastructure made for the public to understand: when your city invests in smart signals, you benefit directly.
