Here’s the truth about government affairs today: Technology can make teams faster. Trust in technology can make them more effective. The GA teams that understand both will be better positioned to use artificial intelligence as an advantage rather than a liability. But here’s the challenge: pressure to act on AI – and the risk of failure – is quickly building for many GA leaders trying to keep pace while getting the best performance out of tech and team. If that challenge sounds familiar, here’s my advice: First, understand that AI is here to stay. For GA leaders, staying current on AI’s massive capabilities – and its potentially serious risks – is an expectation, not an option. Next, get comfortable moving when it may feel better to stay still. The added uncertainty felt from market volatility or geopolitical tension is something to wrangle, not ignore. Waiting for a calmer environment may mean waiting too long to enable AI in your work. But be wary of diving headfirst into AI or experimenting without a strategy. Importantly, do your homework. Not all AI is created equal. Weak inputs, unclear sourcing, and unverified analysis can put your reputation at risk, so be sure to develop a clear understanding of the various solutions available on the AI marketplace, and thoroughly vet tools before you choose one to invest in and trust. Purpose-built tools made specifically for GA professionals should be at the top of your list. Finally, develop guardrails, guidelines, and governance for AI use. Do teams understand where information comes from? Can they trust the analysis enough to act on it with confidence? Are they able to explain the reasoning to executives, boards, clients, or the public? These questions matter because AI-enabled decisions often carry visible consequences – especially in high-stakes areas like tax, law or government affairs. By choosing trustworthy AI tools and empowering your GA team with the right training and guidance, you can leverage AI as a force multiplier. That’s a win all around for the future of work, modern upskilling, AND the bottom line.
