Virtual simulations from game tech will increasingly be used for real-world applications Last week we at Andreessen Horowitz did a round up of the Big Ideas for 2025 Here was mine: Traditionally, games have been virtual world simulations designed for fun. Now gaming technology is extending beyond entertainment to transform how businesses operate. While gaming has long pioneered breakthrough technologies — from Nvidia’s graphics to Unreal Engine’s real-time 3D rendering — these tools are now solving critical business challenges. Consider Applied Intuition, a company built on Unreal Engine, which creates virtual simulations to train and test autonomous vehicles. Three forces are accelerating this shift: generative AI is slashing the cost of virtual content creation; advanced 3D capture technologies are digitizing real-world environments (aka digital twins); and next-generation XR devices are making immersive experiences practical for workers. The applications are already here: Anduril Industries leverages game engines for defense simulations; Tesla creates virtual worlds for autonomous systems; BMW is incorporating AR in future heads-up display systems; Matterport revolutionizes real estate with virtual walkthroughs; Traverse3D helps companies unlock virtual interactive training for their workforce. Whether it’s training autonomous systems in virtual environments, helping consumers shop with 3D visuals, or scaling tomorrow’s workforce via simulations, I think game tech will infuse every sector in 2025

For a long time, Virtual Reality was positioned as the next big consumer breakthrough. Headsets were supposed to replace TVs, and gaming was expected to explode into fully immersive worlds. When that didn’t happen at scale, many people labeled VR a disappointment—just another overhyped tech experiment that failed to live up to the marketing. But while the consumer narrative cooled off, something significant was happening in the background. As a long-time patient advocate, I’ve had the privilege of watching immersive tech move into spaces where it directly impacts human lives. Today, VR is no longer just for entertainment; it has evolved into a validated medical tool. We are seeing it move beyond the living room and into the clinic, where it is changing the field of therapeutic neuroscience. The science behind it is fascinating. When a patient enters a well-designed virtual environment, their brain is tasked with processing a massive influx of multisensory data. This creates a "bandwidth competition" in the central nervous system. Because the brain has a finite capacity for attention, this deep immersion can actually inhibit the transmission of pain signals. It isn't just a distraction; it is a neurological intervention. Even more compelling is the potential for neuroplasticity. Newer research suggests that consistent VR therapy can help regulate overactive pain pathways over time, leveraging the brain’s incredible ability to rewire itself. For those living with chronic back pain, nerve injuries, or long-term conditions like fibromyalgia, this offers a path to relief that reduces the immediate reliance on high-dose opioids or invasive procedures. This shift is reaching many corners of the hospital. We are seeing VR used to gamify physical rehabilitation, provide controlled exposure therapy for PTSD, and even allow surgeons to rehearse complex procedures in a 3D twin of a patient’s unique anatomy. What once struggled to find its place in our homes is proving its value in stroke recovery and mental health treatment. It is a reminder that innovation doesn’t always succeed where it is first marketed. Sometimes, the most meaningful breakthroughs show up where they can make the greatest human impact. VR didn’t fail; it is finding a new purpose. The future of healthcare isn’t only about the next pill or device. It’s about combining tech with a deeper understanding of the human brain to create safer, more effective ways to heal. As an advocate who has spent years pushing for better patient outcomes, seeing these tools move from niche concepts to the standard of care gives us hope.

AR and VR were once seen as experimental... Today, they’re solving our major problems. By 2030, the global market is projected to reach $200B+, with Europe contributing $15.8B by 2029. But the more important shift is where AR/VR is actually starting to work. We’re already seeing tangible impact in healthcare: → The World Health Organization reports a 20% reduction in surgical errors through immersive simulation. → The NHS in the UK now treats over 10,000 patients annually using VR-based therapies. → In France, hospitals using AR-assisted surgeries have achieved 35% faster recovery rates. Backing these outcomes, the European Investment Bank recorded over €5 billion in public and private investment in AR/VR healthcare applications in 2022 alone. Countries like Germany, France, and the UK are leading the way through industrial use cases. 5G networks are improving the technical foundation. And the integration of AI is making AR and VR systems more intelligent, more responsive, and easier to apply in real-world environments. The broader trend is clear: AR/VR is no longer a speculative bet. That changes the lens for both founders and investors. Instead of asking “What can we build with AR/VR?”, the better question is: “Where does this technology naturally integrate to unlock measurable value?” We have put together in the map below the AR/VR startups in Europe; if we missed any, let us know in the comments so we can add them in version 2 of this map. #Venturecapital #AI #Deeptech #Startups Follow us at APEX Ventures and subscribe to our newsletter for exclusive content on groundbreaking Deep Tech startups: 🔗 https://t2m.io/EV2qHQuo

When immersive tech stops being a novelty and becomes a LIFELINE for human connection, that's true innovation!!! 💜🕶️ Rendever just secured $4.5 million in NIH funding. Not because they're hyping metaverse dreams. Because their VR platform is SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN to overcome social isolation in seniors. Let that sink in: Virtual Reality doesn't just entertain older adults. It literally extends their lifespans through connection, memory, and joy. Watch the video. An 80-year-old puts on a headset and says "I'm flooded with memories." Another asks "Where should we travel today?" A caregiver says "This is the best tool in my toolkit." That's not marketing. That's transformation. The research is undeniable: Falls reduce by 48% in 4 weeks. Family engagement bridges distances. Dementia patients reconnect with dignity. Caregiver burnout decreases. Community satisfaction scores jump 40%+ in 8 weeks. 🔹 Reminiscence Therapy — Revisit childhood homes, wedding locations, life milestones. Restore identity through memory, not medication. 📩 Shared Multiplayer Experiences — Families separated by miles play together, laugh together, CREATE together in shared virtual spaces. 🥽 Healthcare-Grade Impact — This isn't entertainment. It's clinical intervention with measurable outcomes and sustainable business models. No ROI spreadsheet needed. The joy is the proof. The opportunity is massive: 500+ senior living communities already deployed. Now expanding to home care. India's aging population? Southeast Asia's residential communities? Africa's emerging senior markets? The addressable market is BILLIONS in unmet human need. By 2027, every senior care facility without VR-based connection protocols will be viewed as operationally deficient. What does aging look like when technology means connection instead of isolation? #VirtualReality #HealthTech #MentalHealth #Care #Family #Wellness

This week’s defining shift for me is that XR is becoming a marketing medium. What once felt like a technology for experimental activations is maturing into a channel for ongoing engagement and sales. Across industries from retail to real estate, XR is transforming how people experience products, events, and spaces, creating immersive experiences that connect with customers and deliver measurable results. This week’s spatial computing news surfaced signals like these: 🍕 Pizza Hut’s AR racing game turns pizza boxes into a campaign platform, letting customers scan a QR code to unlock an interactive Supercars experience tied to the Bathurst 1000. 😎 Banuba’s new eyewear try-on for Shopify gives online retailers an easy way to integrate AR into e-commerce, letting customers “try before they buy” directly from their devices. ⛵ SailGP’s RaceScape XR app blends live video and an AR tabletop racing experience on Vision Pro, making mixed reality part of how the league engages fans worldwide. 🪞 Aircards’ £3M raise will expand AR mirrors, LED tunnels, and spatial analytics, helping brands transform retail and event spaces into measurable, immersive experiences. 🏡 Three Space Lab’s $3M seed round scales VR real estate tours that act as both sales and marketing tools for luxury property developers across global markets. Why this matters: We’re still early, but XR is no longer limited to one-off activations. CPG, sports, retail, real estate, and fashion are all exploring ways to integrate it into their marketing and sales strategies. Once this kind of cross-sector momentum builds, it rarely fades. #realestate #marketing #advertising #brands #CPG #QSR #retail #ecommerce #mixedreality #augmentedreality #virtualreality #XR

Meta leads the global XR (AR/VR headset) Market; AR glasses captured one-fourth of the share in Q3 2025, Counterpoint Research VR is slowing, while AR+AI smart glasses are expanding the market into a more “daily-wear” form factor, and that naturally fragments shares. #Meta still led VR but felt the slight slowdown. Meta's shipments dipped 4% YoY and share fell to 57% (from 71% in Q2). At the same time, AR smart glasses hit their highest-ever quarterly shipments, pushing AR to ~25% of total XR volumes, with #MicroLED rising to 25% of AR shipments. Meta’s strategy is clear with Ray-Ban Meta Display: enter early, scale fast through mainstream eyewear distribution, and make #AI + camera glasses a daily habit while displays mature. Notably, sales began Sept 30, so Q3 sell-in reflects just one day; the real signal will be Q4 demand and how quickly Meta can convert “glasses” into its next platform. RayNeo’s rise is what “right product at the right moment” looks like in #AR+AI glasses. It’s less about spec wars and more about shipping volume as the category moves to everyday utility. Sony remains the steady premium anchor with #PSVR2, because ecosystems beat one-off hardware cycles. When content and platform gravity are strong, you don’t need to win units; you win engagement. XREAL is quietly riding the shift toward display-led smart glasses as the mainstream “personal screen” use case forms. If comfort, optics, and portability keep improving, this lane will expand faster than many expect. PICO XR is proving that #XR demand for enterprise and location-based entertainment can still move meaningful volume. In a soft market, predictable deployments matter more than hype-driven launches.
