I've never looked at travel as a break from work. For me, it's always been an extension of it. Every year, I make it a point to travel to different cities and countries. Not because I have a bucket list. But because every place teaches me something that no boardroom or spreadsheet ever can. A tiny café in Tokyo teaches me more about customer obsession than a dozen business books. A founder in Singapore changes how I think about distribution. A retail store in Seoul makes me question why we've accepted mediocrity back home. The more I travel, the more I realise something uncomfortable. That the best startup ideas don't appear out of thin air. They're often adaptations. If you only learn from people who think like you, build like you, and sell to people like you, You'll eventually build on yesterday. Every market has already solved a problem you're about to face. The question is: Did you travel far enough to notice it? You see a behaviour in one market. A product in another. A business model somewhere else. Then you ask yourself: "Could this work in India?" Some of the most exciting companies I've worked with were built by founders who didn't try to reinvent everything. They simply understood a problem deeply and adapted a proven insight to their own market. Travel also reminds me of something equally important. Every founder worries about growth. Every entrepreneur struggles with hiring. Every startup wonders whether they're moving fast enough. The challenges are surprisingly universal. The solutions rarely are. As an operator and investor, that's probably what I value most. Because sometimes the best investment insight doesn't come from a pitch deck. It comes from a conversation with someone you've just met, thousands of miles away. I've been fortunate to build businesses and work with founders across India, Southeast Asia, Japan and Europe. And every trip leaves me with the same feeling. The world moves much faster than our assumptions. That's why I never treat travel as an expense. It's one of the highest-return investments I've made in the way I think. Because in the end, The companies that survive aren't always built by the smartest founders. They're often built by the ones curious enough to realise that the best ideas rarely originate in the same room they work from. #Travel #Startups #Entrepreneurship #OperatorInvestor #BuildingInIndia

Two years ago, I moved to Austria with curiosity in my heart and a question in my mind: What if Austrian and Indian universities could do more together? This week, that “what if” felt more real than ever. TU Austria (a network of TU Wien, TU Graz, and Montanuniversität Leoben) this week has launched a powerful initiative with India, supported by €5 million in funding from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy. This isn't just another exchange program. It’s a strategic bridge — rooted in academic diplomacy, built on trust and excellence, and aimed at addressing the global challenges of our time: 📌 Circular economy 📌 Climate-neutral technologies 📌 Sustainable infrastructure 📌 AI and digitalization As someone who has worked for a decade at the intersection of academia, innovation, and international collaboration — from Indian universities to top US institutions, and now actively engaging with Austrian universities — I see this as a defining moment. A moment to: 🎯 Co-create joint research labs 🎯 Launch PhD exchange programs with dual supervision 🎯 Design transdisciplinary academic-industry clusters between Austria and India 🎯 Develop curriculum and mobility models for the future of STEM education This is where I’d love to contribute — as a consultant and bridge-builder for universities in both countries. Helping map opportunities, facilitate strategic dialogues, and enable world-class programs that serve both nations — and the planet. 📢 To university leaders, deans, researchers, and innovation offices — let’s talk. Because when two strong academic cultures come together, we don’t just exchange students. We exchange futures. ✈️Why Travel is an Entrepreneur’s Greatest Investment? 💫💫 And it’s not just for Instagram. Period. As entrepreneurs, we often chase growth, creativity, and clarity. I’ve found that travel—whether for work or leisure—is one of the most underrated tools for unlocking all three. Here's why: 📍Perspective Shift: Stepping out of your home market forces you to unlearn and relearn. Every city, country, or culture you experience adds a new lens to your problem-solving toolkit.🌍 📍 Inspiration from the Unexpected: A street vendor in Bangkok once inspired our F&B packaging redesign. A Michelin kitchen tour in Barcelona gave me insight into flow and efficiency we later applied to our event kitchens. 📍 Client Discovery & Networking: Business travel opens doors. Some of our largest accounts started with a coffee catch-up on the sidelines of a conference or a chance meeting at an airport lounge. Pre COVID I got a chance to actually work out of Jafza n Dubai which was a dream. 📍 Leisure Travel = Business Breakthroughs: On a solo hike in Kasol, away from phone signals and pings, I cracked the pricing structure we now use across our business verticals. 📍 Team & Culture Benchmarking: Visiting international setups allows you to benchmark systems, team energy, and leadership approaches—it’s the fastest way to learn what world-class really looks like. The next time you book a trip, ask yourself: What could this teach me? Because travel isn’t an escape—it’s an evolution. 🌍🌍🙌

What happens when an innovation studio works hand-in-hand with a university to mobilise knowledge? That’s the challenge Studio Zao is tackling. This UK-based innovation studio helps organisations unleash their internal entrepreneurial potential, building cultures of experimentation, validating ideas rapidly, and aligning innovation efforts with real-world user needs. Now, they’ve turned their attention to universities. In this article, “How Can We Bridge the Knowledge Exchange Gap Using Principles of Productive Innovation?”, Studio Zao reframes a problem many of us in higher education know too well: our research outputs often don’t make it to the communities and businesses who could benefit most. Not because they aren’t valuable, but because our systems for knowledge exchange are fundamentally mismatched with how innovation really happens. Their proposition is simple: if universities want to deliver real-world impact, we need to learn from how the best innovators work. Studio Zao proposes three shifts: 🔹 Foster intrapreneurs within academic staff - people empowered to turn insights into impact from the bottom up. 🔹Adopt an evidence-led approach that starts with use-cases and customers, not just curiosity. 🔹Prioritise stakeholder value by speaking the language of business and meeting real-world needs. In short, they recommend applying lean, customer-centric innovation principles inside universities before research is complete, not after. They argue that if we embed this approach in how we think, teach, and fund, universities could become unmatched engines of applied, inclusive innovation. This article invites us to imagine what could happen if we stopped pushing knowledge out and started pulling partners in. #KnowledgeExchange #Innovation #HigherEducation #UniversityImpact #StudioZao #EntrepreneurialUniversities #Intrapreneurship #AcademicInnovation #InnovationStudios 👉 https://lnkd.in/g5gc69MN

How can we bridge the gap between academia and policymaking to create more effective public policies? This report provides actionable recommendations on improving academic-policy engagement. Key recommendations include: 🔶 Proactive Support: Universities and policy institutes should actively provide information and resources to aid academic engagement with policymaking. Effective signposting to these resources is also essential. 🔶 Recognition in Academic Frameworks: Institutions need to acknowledge policy engagement within workload models and career progression frameworks. This is frequently highlighted during research impact training and is crucial to get right. 🔶 Tailored Guidance: Policymakers should create specific resources for academics to navigate policy engagement opportunities. 🔶 Addressing Geographic Disparities: Mechanisms should be developed to increase engagement with universities outside London and the South East. 🔶 Sustained Engagement: Continuous interactions between policymakers and academics should be facilitated, considering the workload implications. 🔶 Case Studies and Transparency: Publicly accessible case studies of successful academic-policy engagements and transparent use of research evidence are essential. There is wide agreement that engagement between academia and policymakers is a positive step, but it can be challenging to implement. Ensuring that research effectively informs decision-making is key. #AcademicEngagement #PolicyMaking #ResearchImpact #HigherEducation #PublicPolicy #KnowledgeExchange #EvidenceBasedPolicy #AcademicResearch

#India is on its way to becoming a global science and innovation powerhouse – and Germany can and should be an important partner in this endeavour! On the occasion of the Indo-German Forum 2025 and in order to further extend collaborations between universities in India and Germany, #DAAD has just published a strategy paper on Indo-German HE exchange and cooperation. Here are our four key recommendations to German universities: 👍 Develop strategic #cooperations: German universities should seek out strategic partner universities and expand existing collaborations, taking advantage of the untapped potential of cooperation with universities outside major metropolises as well as with non-university research institutions. 👍 Attract Indian #talent: We recommend targeted recruitment of highly qualified students. Universities should prioritise quality and design selection procedures accordingly. In addition, tailor-made support services can facilitate the transition to the German labour market. 👍 Focus on #technology_transfer and #innovation: Germany's universities can highly benefit from India's dynamic start-up culture and rapid developments in the fields of technology transfer and innovation. There is also much potential in collaborations with research-based commercial enterprises based there - including those from Germany. 👍 Strengthen #regional_expertise and #transparent_exchange: Successful cooperation requires in-depth knowledge of the Indian academic sector as well as its diverse society. Indian cooperation perspectives should be consciously reflected and integrated. Mobility from Germany to India should be increased in order to promote the mutual exchange of knowledge. Many thanks to our main authors Katja Lasch, Mirjam Schmidt, Sven Werkmeister as well as to all colleagues involved, particularly from DAAD India and DWIH New Delhi!
