    I recently received a rejection from a journal. It was not just a rejection but a desk rejection—the kind where your manuscript does not even make it past the editor's desk. They mentioned that the work was not particularly novel and did not quite align with the journal. They had a point. I have been working on this material for a while, and perhaps the novelty become diluted in the process. Every scientist, at some point, faces rejection. It is a rite of passage in academia. Rejections happen all the time, and how we handle them matters. It is about resilience and recalibration. So, what can we do when faced with such setbacks? One way is to look for another journal. Sure, it is tempting to be discouraged, but the truth is, there are many journals out there, each competing for the best papers in their field. What might not be a good fit for one journal could be exactly what another is looking for. The key is knowing the landscape. So, take some time to research journals that are better aligned with your study’s focus, and give it another shot. Another important step is to revisit your literature survey. Journals often reject papers when they feel the work does not clearly state its contribution. We might think we have made a novel point, but it is easy to forget that novelty must be evident, not just to us but to reviewers who might not be familiar with the nuances of your research area. A strong, well-written literature review can be the bridge that takes your work from "not novel" to "groundbreaking." On data. Is your data presented in a way that highlights the core contributions of your work? It is easy to overlook the storytelling aspect of scientific research. Every figure, table, and graph should support the narrative of innovation. If you are not making your data sing, it is easy for reviewers to skim past your most important findings. Go back and ensure the way you present your data draws attention to the novelty. What, really, is novelty? It is a question every scientist grapples with at some point. Novelty is not just about being first; it is about doing something in a new way, solving a problem differently, or opening up a new avenue of research. It is the ability to see connections others do not. If we cannot articulate that innovation in a way that is compelling, the novelty is lost on others. Frame your research in a way that speaks to the current challenges in the field. Why is your work necessary? What questions does it answer that have not been addressed before? Handling rejection is part of the scientific process. Every rejection is an opportunity to refine your work and sharpen your message. Instead of dwelling on the "no," think of how you can make your next submission stronger. Every setback is a step toward making your research even better. So, embrace the process, learn from it, and let it guide you to eventual success. Good luck to everyone and especially to myself on the next submission!

    I often remind my students that paper acceptance or rejection should not be viewed as the ultimate goal. A rejected paper simply means it hasn't been accepted yet, while an accepted paper doesn't guarantee flawless scientific quality. Submitting a paper should be seen as an opportunity to gain valuable "outside views" from experts, guiding the next steps in your research. Peer review, much like democracy, is the best system we have, but it's not without flaws, including randomness. I understand that graduate students and early-career researchers often place undue emphasis on paper acceptance, subjecting themselves to unnecessary emotional stress. While I can't speak for all fields of science, in certain engineering disciplines, if you're aiming for a career in industry after graduation, the number of papers on your CV is among the least important factors. If you're pursuing a career in academia, you should prepare for a marathon, not a sprint. Sooner or later, you'll realize that paper acceptance is not as critical as you once thought. It's also important to remember that everyone in academia, even the so-called "superstars," has far more rejected papers than accepted ones—those rejections simply aren't displayed on CVs, but they certainly exist. So, the next time your paper is rejected, don't drown in negative emotions. Shake it off, focus on the actionable feedback, and use it to improve the quality of your work.

    My manuscript got rejected 11 times. This was my first big manuscript and I almost gave up. Then it finally got accepted by what I thought was just a "mid-tier" journal. Today, that paper is my most cited publication. Patients still email me about it, wondering if they have the same condition. But the biggest win wasn't the acceptance. It was the system I built for handling rejections. 👇 1️⃣ Rejection Is Free Consulting ↳ It's expert feedback you didn't have to pay for. ↳ Keep a rejection journal. Track what each "no" taught you. 2️⃣ Data. Not Drama. ↳ Wait 48 hours before diving into reviews. ↳ Categorize every comment into Valid Points, Preferences, and Misunderstandings. 3️⃣ A Great Paper to the Wrong Journal Is Still a Rejection ↳ Scope mismatch is one of the top reasons for desk rejection. ↳ A specialized audience that values your question beats a broad readership that doesn't. 4️⃣ Papers That Survive Tough Reviews End Up Stronger ↳ Some critiques reveal real gaps: sample size, methodology, scope. ↳ Strong resubmissions often surpass first-accept papers because they've been stress-tested. 5️⃣ Patching a Rejected Draft Preserves the Problems ↳ Don't patch.     When they said, "Just revise and resubmit (your proposal), you will be fine," I am certain that they didn't mean this ⬇ 🙃 Revising and resubmitting a rejected proposal requires careful planning, consideration, and improvement of various aspects. Here are some tips. 1. Review feedback thoroughly: Start by thoroughly reviewing the feedback provided by the reviewers. Understand their suggestions, as this will be the basis for the revisions. 2. Address reviewer comments: Read each comment and criticism thoroughly from the reviewers (not in the R&R but internally to plan). Think about how you will incorporate their suggestions or why you choose not to if you believe your original approach is sound. 3. Improve clarity and organization: Ensure that the proposal is clear and well-organized. Make your goals, objectives, activities, methods, and significance of the project explicit and easy to understand. Include a TOC and/or LM. 4. (If NSF) Strengthen the Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts: Emphasize the IM and BI of your project. Explain how your project advances scientific knowledge and benefits society. 5. Update data: Include new preliminary data or results that strengthen your case. This can demonstrate the progress or the feasibility of your project. 6. Highlight collaborations: If applicable, highlight any new collaborations or partnerships that have developed since your initial submission. 7. Revisit budget and timeline: Review them to ensure they are realistic and well-justified. 8. Seek external input: Consider seeking feedback from colleagues, mentors, or peers who were not involved in the initial submission. Fresh perspectives can be valuable. 9. Follow guidelines: Ensure that you follow all solicitation guidelines and formatting requirements to the letter. This includes adherence to page limits, font sizes, and other formatting rules. 10. Resubmit strategically: Timing is important. Don't rush to resubmit immediately after receiving feedback. Take the time needed to plan and make substantial improvements. 11. Write a stronger project summary: Pay attention to your project summary or abstract. It should provide a clear and compelling overview of your project. 12. Stay positive: Remember that rejection is common in the world of grant funding. Be persistent, maintain a positive attitude, and keep refining your proposal with each resubmission. 13. Maybe consider a different program: If your proposal is repeatedly rejected, it may be worth exploring whether another program might be a better fit. 14. Consult w/Program Officers: Reach out to the POs for guidance. Attend office hours/webinars. 15. Peer review: Consider having your revised proposal reviewed by colleagues/mentors who have experience with similar grants. Yes, the resubmission process can be challenging and time-consuming, but it's also a good opportunity to strengthen the proposal and increase the chances for success. 0 submission = 0 success.
