How I would visualize a regression: I wouldn’t. IMO, it’s better to visualize the *takeaway* than the analysis. Here’s what I mean: If you know how to run a regression, you were probably taught that there are two “right” ways to report the results: - A regression table - A regression plot Perfect for academic publications or audiences, not so great for business leaders and stakeholders. While regressions tell you the direction and strength of a relationship, they rarely make the insights tangible or compelling. Let's say your organization faces an attrition challenge. Your regression analysis shows employee engagement is the strongest predictor of retention sentiment. You want leaders to prioritize engagement initiatives. You could show them your regression plot... but I doubt you'll change any minds. Instead, visualize the takeaway. The process: ➤ Conduct analysis: Run your regression to identify root causes ➤ Extract key insight: Employee engagement drives retention ➤ Make it tangible: Transform your insight into concrete metrics (e.g., retention sentiment by engagement level) ➤ Design your visualization: Create one powerful visual showing what's at stake The outcome: A simple chart showing disengaged employees are 5x more likely to be flight risks than engaged employees. Is it less technical than the regression plot? Yes. Is it an oversimplification? To some extent. But it delivers the message leaders need to hear, and it’s still grounded in robust statistical analysis. That’s why I’m so passionate about accessible science communication. In biotech and life sciences, breakthroughs like gene editing and cell therapies are extraordinary. But if they’re hidden behind technical language, we miss the chance to inspire, build trust, and show their real-world impact. At Thermo Fisher Scientific, I’ve seen how storytelling can unlock that understanding. We tell stories about the researchers, patients and innovators behind science to bring discoveries to life, use formats like podcasting to make complex topics approachable to spark curiosity beyond the lab, and social media to turn small scientific details into moments of wonder for a broad audience. Regardless of how great your ideas are in your virtual sales pitch, webinar, or team meeting… People are most likely checking their email, browsing social media, or working on other things while you present. How can you prevent that and actually get your audience to pay attention? Here are 4 of the most powerful techniques we use for our own virtual training courses: 1. Win the first five seconds According to research from the University of Toronto, people need only five seconds to gauge your charisma and leadership as a speaker. In virtual environments, this first impression is even more critical. To establish instant rapport: - Keep your posture open and inviting (avoid fidgeting, crossed arms, and closed-off postures) - Use open gestures that welcome the audience into your space - Gesture with your palms showing at a 45-degree angle - Speak with clear articulation and energy from the very first word The quickest way to lose your audience? Starting with tentative body language that signals you’re unsure or unprepared. 2. Design your presentation for virtual viewing When designing slides, assume varied viewing conditions. Design for the smallest likely device and the slowest likely Internet speed. Make your slides accessible by: - Using larger fonts (24-32pt) - Applying higher contrast colors - Limiting each slide to ONE clear idea - Adding more space between lines when using smaller text - Stripping excess content (you can provide additional information in a separate document) 3. Vary your delivery Our research shows the optimal length for linear presentations is just 16-30 minutes, while interactive ones can maintain engagement for 30-45 minutes. People’s attention will go through peaks and valleys during that time, so try these techniques to keep their attention: - Vary your speaking pace (faster to convey urgency, slower to express gravity) - Use intentional pauses to let key points land - Adjust your vocal tone (lower pitch for authority, higher for approachability) - Shift between slides, stories, and data at regular intervals Each change helps reset your audience’s attention and signals importance. 4. Build in structured interaction Don’t make your audience wait until the end of your presentation to interact. According to our research, presentations that incorporate audience engagement through polls, chat responses, or breakout discussions maintain attention longer. For the highest engagement: - Use a variety of interaction types throughout your presentation - Incorporate breakout rooms for small-group discussions - Switch modalities regularly to keep it interesting Remember: In virtual environments, you need to recreate the natural engagement that happens in person. What I learned from my first science slam workshop Less than two weeks ago, I gave my first science slam — and I was instantly hooked. I absolutely loved the experience. Wanting to take things further, I joined a science slam workshop. It might seem ironic to do the workshop after the performance, but sometimes learning sticks better once you've had a taste. Here are the takeaways I’ll carry with me into the next round: 🔑 Less is more. Ten minutes is the official limit. If you’re worried that your talk won’t fit into ten minutes, trust that it definitely won’t work in twelve. Aim for 9:30. Keep it tight, clear, and punchy. 🎭 Authenticity beats perfection. You don’t have to be the funniest person in the room or a natural performer. But you do have to show up as yourself. If the audience can feel why your topic matters to you, it has a real chance of mattering to them too. 🧵 Structure it: Know – Feel – Do. Every strong talk has a clear thread. Ask yourself: What should people know by the end? What should they feel? And what might they be inspired to do? 💬 Start with “Why” — and go deeper. When preparing your talk, ask “Why?” not just once, but four or five times, like a curious three-year-old might. That’s when you move past the surface of your topic and reach the heart of your message. 🎯 Clarify your message. What is the core insight you want the audience to remember — not just right after the talk, but three weeks later, maybe even at 3 a.m.? That’s your north star. Everything else should support it. 🔔 Nail your opening and your ending. Audiences remember beginnings and endings more than anything else. Avoid a generic closing like “That’s it — thanks for listening.” And don’t just wing it — memorize your opening, closing, and transitions. They’re your anchors. 📚 Stories connect more than concepts. People connect more than things. If you want people to care, tell stories. Wrap your ideas in a narrative arc — not because it’s cute, but because it’s how our brains are wired to understand the world. 🧠 Storytelling is problem-solving. A good story reveals a challenge, a journey, and a resolution. Make that path visible. And don’t be afraid to show your own vulnerability — it’s the glue that holds everything together. Rule II of Effective Dataviz: Clear Meaning A strong data visualization doesn’t just present numbers — it tells a story. The key is clarity. Even if your analysis is rock solid, a poorly designed chart can leave your audience confused, forcing them to guess the insight instead of getting it. Here’s how to use common chart elements to ensure your dataviz communicate exactly what you intend: - Use clear titles & headlines: Your title should answer “What am I looking at?” and your headline should answer “What does this chart say?” Don’t make your audience work to figure it out. - Ditch legends, use direct labeling: Labels should be placed on the chart, not in a separate key. Make it easy for viewers to process information without extra effort. - Add annotations for context: A well-placed note can highlight key takeaways and provide essential background info. - Leverage visual cues: Use arrows, boxes, or subtle shading to direct attention — just don’t overdo it. Too many cues, and nothing stands out. The best data visualizations guide the audience effortlessly to the insight, freeing their minds up actually hear the story you're telling them. Data without a story is just a spreadsheet. A story without data is just an opinion. Ever wondered why some presentations leave you stunned while others put you to sleep? The answer might be simpler than you think: It's all about how you present your data. Let's dive into a masterclass on data visualization, courtesy of Hans Rosling's iconic TED talk. Rosling starts with a bombshell: Swedish top students know statistically significantly less about the world than chimpanzees. Wait, what? He goes on… Rosling used a simple quiz: → 5 pairs of countries → Each pair: one country has twice the child mortality of the other → The task: Identify which country in each pair has higher mortality The results from his students were…shockingly bad. Why this story works: Simplicity: The test is easy to understand Contrast: Humans vs. Chimpanzees (unexpected comparison) Personal connection: We all think we're smarter than chimps Just like startups need to solve high-intensity problems, your data needs to address high-intensity curiosities. Rosling didn't pick random facts. Instead, he chose a topic that matters (child mortality), a comparison that shocks (educated humans vs. random guessing), and results that challenge assumptions (We're not as informed as we think). This is the "Intensity Imperative" of data storytelling. How to Apply This: 1/ Find the Unexpected What data point in your industry would surprise even the experts? Where do common assumptions fall apart when faced with real numbers? 2/ Make It Personal How can you frame data so your audience sees themselves in the story? What universal human experiences can you tap into? 3/ Simplify, Then Simplify Again Can you explain your key data point in one sentence? If not, keep refining until you can. 4/ Use Vivid Comparisons Instead of abstract numbers, how can you relate your data to everyday concepts? Example: "This much carbon dioxide would fill 1 million Olympic-sized swimming pools" 5/ Build Tension, Then Release Start with a question or premise. then let the data reveal the answer dramatically.

Everyone says "engage your audience" when you're speaking on stage. But nobody really tells you how to own that stage and make it yours. As someone who used to shake before every presentation, I've learned a few things the hard way. Things that turned that fear into something I could actually use. Here it is. Save this for your next presentation 👇🏻 1/ Ride on Shared Narratives → Find common ground fast. People don't connect with perfection. They connect with "me too" moments. 👉🏻 I like to open with a story about struggling with something my audience faces too. 👉🏻 Like feeling invisible in a crowded room or doubting whether anyone's listening. 2/ Keep the Energy Up → Your energy sets the room's energy. If you're flat, they're flat. If you're alive, they lean in. 👉🏻 I move around the stage, vary my tone, and throw in pauses. 👉🏻 It keeps people awake and engaged, even in long sessions. 3/ Speak with Them Before You Speak to Them → A little interaction beforehand goes a long way. I used to hide backstage. Now I walk the room early. 👉🏻 Before I present, I chat with a few people in the audience, ask about their day, their challenges. 👉🏻 So when I'm on stage, I'm speaking to familiar faces. 4/ Don't Skimp on Preparation → Being prepared is your best defense against nerves. I used to wing it. I paid for it every time. 👉🏻 I rehearse my opening and closing until I can say them in my sleep. 👉🏻 It gives me confidence even when my mind goes blank mid-speech. 5/ Learn Their World, Speak Their Language → Tailor your message to resonate. Generic talks don't land. Personalized ones do. 👉🏻 When I speak to financial advisors versus tech founders, I adjust my examples and references to match their daily reality. 👉🏻 Never use a one-size-fits-all script. 6/ Use Your Stories → Personal stories make your message unforgettable. Facts inform. Stories transform. 👉🏻 Instead of listing my credentials, I share how a kid who got bullied and avoided stages now trains leaders across Asia. 👉🏻 Story sticks more than any resume. 7/ Mirror What You Want to See → Project the confidence you want your audience to feel. If you're uncertain, they'll be uncertain. If you're grounded, they'll trust you. 👉🏻 If I want my audience to feel calm and confident, I start by being calm and confident myself 👉🏻 Even if I'm nervous inside. I'm not a natural speaker. I'm someone who learned through repetition, failure, and intention. If you apply even one of these, you'll already be ahead of most people on stage. You don't need perfect English. They dump data, show too many charts, forget to make a recommendation - and wonder why nothing happens. What they're missing is a proven structure that actually persuades. Here's the battle-tested structure that data scientist Russell E. Walker, PhD taught me from his experiences in competitive debate, that transforms technical presentations into persuasive business cases: 1. 𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗠 - 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺? ✴️ Don't just state facts - frame the problem in terms your audience cares about For example: ✴️ For a medical audience: "Patient hospitalizations increased 20%" ✴️ For a finance audience: "Hospitalization costs increased 20%" Same data, different framing 2. 𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡𝗜𝗙𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 - 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁? ✴️ Quantify the harm in dollars, time, or other metrics that matter ✴️ Put it in context (e.g. "This represents 15% of our annual profit") ✴️ Make it material to business goals 3. 𝗜𝗡𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗬 - 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝘅 𝗶𝘁𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳? ✴️ Identify the root cause ✴️ Show the problem is systemic, not temporary ✴️ Prove intervention is necessary (e.g. "This trend has continued for 18 months despite normal business cycles"). 4. 𝗦𝗢𝗟𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗬 - 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘁? ✴️ Present your plan or recommendation ✴️ Connect the dots: show exactly how your solution addresses the root cause ✴️ Loop back to the original harm (e.g. "This will reduce hospitalizations by X%, saving $Y annually") This works because you're taking your audience on a logical journey from problem to solution - each step builds on the previous one. And it works for any data science presentation - whether you're presenting a model, recommending process changes, or requesting resources. Try this structure in your next presentation. Start with the business problem your audience cares about, not with your methodology. Stop watching your brilliant insights get ignored because of poor presentation structure. The number 1 rule in paper writing -> highlight your unique contribution. What separates research that gets published from that that is rejected? It's all about communicating your NOVELTY. Most rejected papers make a critical mistake: they place focus on the description of methodology without clearly explaining WHY this work matters. Here's what I tell my mentees to do instead. Instead of saying: "We conducted an experimental study on machine learning algorithms" Craft it like this: "A novel algorithm *X* presented in this study was shown to reduce computational time by 37% compared to existing models" The key to success is in emphasising: - What makes your research different - The specific impact of your unique approach - The problem you're solving that others haven't Pro tip: Your novelty statement should answer three key questions: 1. What gap are you filling? 2. How is your approach innovative? 3. What tangible difference does it make? Reviewers and readers want to know IMMEDIATELY why your research matters.
