    Exploring the Human Backbone – A Curious Glimpse into MRI Scans ✨ Our young learners (Grade 5, specifically!) stepped into the fascinating world of human anatomy, not just through textbooks, but by observing an actual MRI scan of the vertebral column. With wide eyes and curious minds, they carefully studied the images, trying to trace the intricate structure of the spinal cord and the vertebrae—the tiny bones stacked like building blocks that form our backbone. To my fellow educators in Nashik, Pune, Varanasi, Nagpur, and Hinjewadi, this is a powerful example of what #NewAgeLearning truly looks like. Moving beyond rote memorisation to hands-on, visual experiences that genuinely bring #ScienceEducation alive. Through guided discussion, our students discovered how this vital column protects the spinal cord and supports our body like a strong pillar. It was a remarkable classroom moment where technology met curiosity, and the complexities of human biology came alive right before their eyes! This kind of immersive, #ExperientialLearning is a crucial "1% better" step we can take every day to truly revolutionize education and foster #ClassroomInnovation. Here's how: 1. Foldscopes are affordable, portable, and easy to use, making them an ideal tool for rural students who may not have access to expensive microscopes or advanced scientific equipment. This democratizes access to scientific exploration and discovery. 2. It encourages hands-on experimentation and observation, allowing students to engage with the scientific process in a tangible way. This experiential learning approach can foster a deeper understanding of scientific concepts and principles. . The unique design and functionality can inspire students to ask questions, explore, and investigate the natural world. This inquiry-based approach can help develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills. 4.     The best middle school classroom I ever sat in didn't have desks. It had dinosaurs. Where I grew up, the Saint Louis Science Center, CAHOKIA MOUNDS MUSEUM SOCIETY, and the Saint Louis Art Museum, were free. We didn't go because someone said it would "boost our scores." We went because it was hot and the buildings had air conditioning. Because we were working class and my mom needed something free, something better than staying home. And it changed everything. I had undiagnosed ADHD and dyslexia. Books weren't how I learned things.  Not in summer. Not during the school year. But moving through a new space full of novel sights and sounds, and sometimes even building something? That made sense. That's how I started building a mental model of the world beyond my obsessions of the time with Rambo, Nintendo, and muscle cars. I learned that the Cahokia people built a vast and complex society long before I got there. I stood beneath a T. rex and and imagined the fear any smaller creature must have had standing in its shadow. I learned that some artists don't paint what a thing looks like. They paint what it feels like. One researcher captures why these experiences are so transformative: "One of the primary advantages of educational museums is their ability to create interactive and experiential learning opportunities. Rather than passively absorbing information from textbooks, students can actively engage with exhibits, experiment with hands-on activities…stimulating curiosity and fostering a sense of discovery, educational museums ignite a passion for learning and inspire students to explore subjects beyond the confines of the classroom." It cracked something open for me. Years later, I worked at the Science Center doing children's theater and educational presentations. And I learned even more on the inside. That role has continued to shape how I teach, coach, and design instruction. Summer's long. This is one way to mitigate some of the learning loss. Or better yet, nudge a child from disengaged towards engagement. The doors are open. And the air inside is cool. What's the most powerful learning experience you remember from childhood?     Thrilled to see this new research from Mississippi: "A four-lesson, hands-on, food- and nutrition-focused science education program was developed for a rural public library as proof of concept for science education in public libraries. Backpacks with materials, supplies, books, and evaluation postcards were provided. This manuscript summarizes program development, implementation, and evaluation, including perceived science learning gains and experiences of youth participants in kindergarten through eighth grade. This program improves perceived science learning gains of and provides positively perceived science experiences for participants. Public libraries have the potential to improve accessibility of U.S. children to informal science education to potentially elevate both science literacy and good health." https://lnkd.in/e6PMDRmH #EngagedLibraries
