VR training rarely fails because of hardware. It fails because of incorrect assumptions about how people learn and perform under pressure. One common mistake is treating VR as a visual product rather than a training system. High-end graphics without cognitive load, uncertainty, and time pressure do little to improve operational performance. Real value comes from forcing decisions under stress, not from visual realism alone. Another issue is over-centralization. Training content is often developed as a fixed, centrally managed library. In operational environments, relevance erodes quickly. Scenarios must be adaptable, locally configurable, and continuously updated by instructors close to real-world operations. Human behavior is also frequently oversimplified. Non-player characters tend to act predictably, which results in training compliance instead of judgment. Trainees quickly learn how to “solve” scenarios rather than respond authentically, undermining transfer to real situations. Finally, VR is often disconnected from the broader training cycle. Without a structured after-action review, measurable performance data (Moneyball, anyone?), and repeated exposure across increasing stress levels, VR becomes a one-off experience rather than a capability-building tool. Effective VR training is not about immersion for its own sake. It is about strengthening decision-making, improving coordination under pressure, and accelerating learning loops between experience, reflection, and adaptation.

After helping 50+ universities set up VR labs I’ve seen one truth. Immersive practice changes everything! Today, I’m sharing my 2025 tips on using VR for training—all based on real student outcomes. (Save and repost this for your faculty ♻️) 1️⃣ DANGEROUS SCENARIOS (Safety Imperative) → If it’s risky in real life, practice it in VR first. → Slash liability, boost confidence with hands-on simulations of high-stakes procedures. 2️⃣ IMPOSSIBLE SCENARIOS (Rarity Solution) → Expose students to anomalies they’d encounter once in their career—in VR, they can tackle them again and again. → Clinical or engineering oddities? Let them say “I’ve done this before!” 3️⃣ COUNTERPRODUCTIVE TRAINING (Failure Advantage) → Complex skills demand mistakes to learn. Let them fail big in VR—no real-world consequences. → Every expert was once a beginner who messed up (a lot). VR just makes it safer. 4️⃣ EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT (Budget Saver) → Don’t risk a $1M MRI or $25K flight simulator. → Replicate pricey hardware in VR to save on repair costs and maximize practice time. 💡 Implementation Checklist: 1. Focus on learning goals, not fancy gadgets. 2. Integrate VR seamlessly into your existing curriculum. 3. Train your faculty—lack of educator buy-in is a VR killer. I often recommend DICE for 95% of the institutions I work with—solid gold, seriously. Pro Tip: Track performance metrics for every VR module. A while back, I was at a factory watching new workers struggle to learn a complicated machine setup. The trainer was explaining, the employees were nodding but you could tell they weren’t really “getting it”. And honestly, who can blame them? Learning by watching just doesn’t cut it when the stakes are high. Fast forward to today, and VR training is changing EVERYTHING. It is just flipping the script. No more passive learning. No more trial-and-error on expensive machinery. Instead, workers can practice hands-on, fail/ learn safely, and gain confidence before stepping into the real world. - Anyone, anywhere can get the same high-quality training. A technician in Mumbai can learn just like someone in New York, without the expensive travel. - People learn faster and actually remember what they learned. (VR boosts retention by up to 75% which is way better than PowerPoints and PDFs) - Industries facing massive skill shortages can upskill workers faster than ever before. The global skills gap isn’t just about talent shortages but it’s about access to the right training at the right time and VR is making that possible. Leveraging XR technologies for training and education is an interesting and dynamic issue. I hear repeatedly "getting reps and sets" is a good thing for technical training or I've heard "just a video could do the same" but it's because we haven't leveraged the XR technology for what it could do. My office, the data integration office, has been building this concept of authentic experiences. In which XR training value is increased and becomes more valuable. This involves increasing exposure to a more realistic experience and combining everything into a capstone event. For example: 1) educate flightline basics and PPE 2) Take them over to a Real T-6 and expose them to real operations, noise levels, environmental conditions 3) Then build from that flightline experience the rest of the course 4) once out of fundies begin to combine student centered lectures and demonstrations on the physical trainer into one fluid lesson putting value in the physical presentation of the items 5) Move then to VR to enable student exploration of making mistakes. As well as going over and over the task again and again. Now that they have the value of how heavy something is or how loud something is they have increased value of what they are seeing. For step 5 to work you need XR training to enable making mistakes... I.E not wearing PPE and suddenly you get safety wire in your eye and etc. 6) What brings value to the XR though is a capstone event that combines all objectives into a physical capstone where the learner has to display the competency they learned. The XR technology gave them the ability to deepen their understanding and increase their chances of excellence in that competency rating. About ~15 years ago I told Maher Bahu (manager at the time) , “I just want to learn all things consumer insights faster!” He replied, “Ahh, there’s no substitute for time.” In 2010, that may have been mostly correct. AI was mainstream-accessible. I’ve been thinking a lot of how to accelerate learning. In sports the common strategy is to “get more reps,” which means more repetitions so you can learn with each situation, get stronger with heavier weights/trying situations, etc. Jayden Daniel, QB for the Commanders, has been well documented for leveraging virtual reality training to get more reps at QB against all different defensive schemes, running different offensive plays, etc. without all the brutal hits that can shorten careers. More reps, faster. Training your mind and body to respond quickly and effectively. In my Leaning & Devopment role, I’ve been thinking A LOT about how to get people more “safe, but realistic reps at scale.” Safe meaning you can fail and not have performance documentation. Realistic reps at scale meaning, …a bank of real-life example situations that you navigate with VR. …practice when you want versus waiting for high stakes experiences to practice with consequences …so many reps you can see your performance over time So who wants to develop a VR Learning & Development class? For example… I’m talking, put the headset on, seeing the meeting attendees in the conference room, feeling the actual meeting context… Distracted by their emails, Texting people, Arriving late so less time to discuss, Leaving early because, ya know, more meetings, Insert cross-functional team trying to add every objective possible to the cart with no budget and/or time, And then the email arrives with 2 minutes left that mentions the project scope has changed again based on direction from leadership There’s a million business situations I would have loved to have reps against to accelerate my learning/experience. With each rep, we/our teams would get more efficient and effective at collaborating and driving the business. AI could help with coaching tips following each scenario. Maybe I’m late to the party. Fact: Immersive VR environments improve knowledge application and recall, helping employees perform better in high-stakes situations.
