Electrocution happens in a second – no warning, no second chance. ✅ How to Stay Safe: Look Up First → Always check for power lines before moving or erecting scaffolds. Maintain Safe Distance → Minimum 10 ft (3 m) clearance up to 50kV, more for higher voltages. Barricade & Warning Signs → Mark danger zones with flags or tape. Let's break down the major unsafe acts and the lessons we must learn from them: ⚠️ Key Unsafe Acts Identified in the Video: No Use of Full Body Harness: The worker at height is not wearing any fall protection gear. Fall from height remains one of the top causes of fatalities in construction. One slip here could lead to a life-altering injury or death. Unstable & Improper Scaffolding: The platform used seems to be a makeshift structure, possibly bamboo or wooden scaffold, without proper bracing or guardrails. No toe boards, mid-rails, or top rails are visible, increasing the risk of falling tools or the worker losing balance. Overhead Power Line Nearby: There appears to be no safe clearance maintained from live electrical lines. A contact with live wires during such work can result in electrocution, a frequent cause of workplace deaths. Lack of Supervision & Training: The workers seem unaware of the potential hazards. Hazards of Working at Height Falls from unprotected edges Ladder collapse or misplacement Tools or materials falling on workers below Weather conditions (wind, rain, heat) Slips and trips on elevated surfaces Inadequate training or equipment misuse 4.     The scaffold which wasn't safe A worker fell from 12 feet. The scaffold looked fine. Until I checked the couplers. Last month, I audited a residential high-rise in Mumbai. The scaffold passed a visual inspection from 20 feet away. Up close? Different story. Loose couplers. Missing base plates. Toeboard gaps you could fit a hand through. The site engineer told me: "It's been up for three weeks. No problems." That's not safety. That's luck running out. 💡Here's what most construction teams miss: A scaffold isn't just poles and planks. It's a system. And every part matters. 💡The critical components: ➡Base plates – Distribute load, prevent sinking ➡ Standards – Vertical supports, the backbone ➡ Ledgers – Horizontal connectors, carry the load ➡ Transoms – Support the working platform ➡ Couplers – Hold everything together (most overlooked) ➡ Bracing – Prevents collapse under lateral force ➡ Toeboards – Stop tools and materials from falling ➡ Guardrails – Protect workers from falls If one part fails, the whole system fails. I've seen scaffold collapses caused by a single loose coupler. Not the entire structure. One connection point. One project I worked with implemented daily coupler checks. Visual inspections became hands-on: tighten, test, document. In six months? Zero scaffold incidents. Before that? This incident highlights critical gaps in adherence to safety protocols and the need for a proactive, zero-tolerance approach toward unsafe practices. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙃𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙙? - A worker at height was distracted by phone usage. - Scaffolding materials fell due to lack of focus. - A colleague working below sustained injuries. 𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙄𝙩 𝙃𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙙? 1️⃣ 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐚𝐬𝐤: Mobile phone use during work compromised situational awareness. 2️⃣ 𝐋𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: No clear handover or signal for material movement. 3️⃣ 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Absence of barricades or restricted zones below the work area. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 To ensure such incidents are not repeated, the following measures must be enforced: 1. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: - Ban non-essential mobile phone use in high-risk zones. - Implement disciplinary actions for violations. 2. To train employees on the proper use of fall protection, employers must ensure all individuals working at heights are trained to recognize and mitigate fall hazards, and to use fall protection equipment correctly. This training should cover topics like hazard identification, proper use of equipment, and emergency procedures.
