Ευστράτιος Παπάνης και Αγνή Βίκη Abstract The aim of the present study is to examine the effects of student’s gender and their parent’s educational background on professional choices. 2100 students from all over Greece were administered AIST test of General Interests (Bergman/Eder), which lead to six personality types, based on Holland’s typology. The above mentioned aptitude test was standardized for the Greek population. Statistically significant differences were established for the effect of gender on all personality factors. Father’s educational level influenced two factors (Realistic, Investigative) and mother’s background three (Realistic, Investigative and Conventional). It was concluded that women’s emancipation in Greek society and adjustment of maternal role in modern families determined the high influence of mother’s cultural background on children’s professional choices.
